The hair on his arms started to stand up under his jumpsuit. His instincts warned him that he was probably going to get in trouble if he was caught being there. He could sense that there was an energy that made this area of the forest different.
But he knew that he had to be there.
He quietly walked onto the lake, the tapping of his feet echoing loudly off of the frozen surface and out into the woods. That was the thing about snow, it was rather good at blanketing, and muffles everything, making every sound much louder.
He walked to the middle of the lake, just a few feet shy of being in the center and he kneeled. The ice was not thick enough to hold the weight of a normal human, making it thin enough where he could see the water that was hidden.
He could sense a grave under him, most likely at the bottom of the lake. Based on the way he could see the first few feet underwater, then the way it quickly turned a deep, and dark blue, then this lake was most likely very deep. He did not look forward to going down there.
But at the same time, he could tell that the grave was old, and had at least 250 years on him.
But it was still an improper grave, and it must have been an unfortunate death if the remains were resting at the bottom. And he knew for a fact that even if a ghost was not born the night the being died, it was a relief for the remains to be buried and put to rest properly.
He was going to hope that it was an accident that caused the killed the owner of the remains and that they weren't murdered by some type of murderer.
But first, he had to find out if there was even a ghost who could lay claim to the remains. He was going to have to wait for at least a month to make sure that there was not a spirit that could get upset if he moved them.
All ghosts were very sensitive to their remains and despite his halfa status, his initial accident had created a corpse that they had to get rid of. And the moment that his friends touched his body, a chill went down his spine. He found himself growling at Sam and Tucker to get away. In the end, he didn't let Sam and Tucker help at all when it came to the transportation.
They helped him dig a grave in his backyard in record time. But when it came to touching and the placings of his corpse, that was all him. He didn't let them do anything.
Sure, he could have just gone down, grabbed a bone, and then wait for the spirit, if there was one, to come along and defend their grave. But it was an unspoken rule in the Zone that no one messes with another ghost mortal vessel. Not only was it wrong morally, no one wanted to do it. It felt like they were touching a ghost's very soul when they even thought about doing such an act.
Not to mention it was a giant dick move.
So he waited. Sitting in the middle of the frozen lake, waiting for a spirit to return home.
Good thing he had an ice core, he would have frozen his ass off a long time ago. Instead, he busied himself with his phone and the periodic practicing of his powers.
Thankfully, he only had to wait for one night before a spirit returned. And based on the look of the spirit, he was looking at a fellow ice-powered ghost.
The teenager was wearing a hoodie, with some ancient-looking, brown leggings and he was barefoot with a shepherd's crook. He wasn't going to judge, since he had died in a hazmat suit and that was what he was currently wearing under his armor.
The eternal teenager gasped as soon as he saw him sitting on the frozen lake and flew over to him, hovering as he said," Hey!" It was a pleasant surprise to see that the teenager was so concerned for him. At least he didn't have to worry about a vengeful ghost," It's dangerous, the ice is thin!"
He looked down at the ice, before making eye contact with the teenager and smiling," I'll be fine," the teenager gasped and looked shocked. Ignoring the reaction, he climbed up to his feet and dusted off his clothes," Anyway, my name is Danny," the teenager was still gaping as Danny introduced himself," may I ask if you are the spirit of this lake?"
Danny made sure to be polite. If he wanted to lay this spirit's remains to rest, he needed the teenager to agree, and that meant not pissing him off.
"Wait," Surprise was replaced with wariness and curiosity," You're Danny Phantom right?"
Now it was his turn to blink in surprise.
He definitely didn't think a spirit as old, and as isolated as him, was going to know who he was. But he just smiled and nodded his head," Yep. That's me! But what's your name?"
The teenager was still awestruck, and it took a few seconds before the question registered. He stammered before sticking out his hand," Jack Frost! I'm the spirit of Winter and the Guardian of Fun!"
Now it was Danny's turn to smile as he grabbed onto Jack's hand and shook it," Oh a seasonal! As a ghost with an ice core, it's an honor to meet you."
Jack brightened up," You have an ice core?!" He was certainly the Guardian of Fun based on the way he was flying around him in circles out of pure excitement," Dude! We need to hang out! You're the first person I've met that also has ice powers."
Danny let out a loud laugh and said with a grin," I'm pretty sure I cant do what you do," there was no way in hell he was strong enough to be able to bring winter to the world,"' but I wouldn't mind hanging out with a fellow cold loving spirit."
That made Jack laugh even more, and his laughter was contagious.
But with a clearing of his throat, Danny started to get back on track and grabbed Jack's hoodie, gently pulling him down to stand on the ice with him," Jack, I got a few questions to ask you."
Jack frowned at the way the mood suddenly changed, but motioned for Danny to continue with his hand," There's no easy way to say this but," he pointed down at the ice they were standing on," Is that your body I'm sensing down there?"
The reaction was immediate. The winter spirit jerked away and was immediately on the defensive as he hissed out," And what if it is?" he wasn't surprised that Jack was protective of his remains. After all, anyone would be.
Danny put his hands up in what he hoped was a placating manner," Calm down, I'm just here to ask some questions for now."
He let his statement hang in the air, and when Jack tilted his head and nudged his staff in his direction, he took the silent message and continued," Would you like for me to place them into a proper grave?" The winter spirit stiffened up as he continued," I can put them into your family plot if you'd like."
Jack slowly straightened up from his crouching position, and he looked between the lake that was under their feet, and something that was off in the distance, something that he couldn't see. He repeated the process twice more before looking up at Danny, and meekly asking," You can do that?"
He nodded his head," Only if you want me to." Jack was staring at the lake now, his hand clenched tightly around his staff," Jack?" although he said it gently, Jack still jerked up as if he had yelled it," Would you like me to place your remains into your family plot? I'll make a grave and a headstone if need be."
Jack was staring at him with his bright blue eyes, and he glanced over in the same direction once more before meekly saying," I already have a headstone. But if you don't mind…?"
Danny nodded his head and gave the teenager a gentle smile," Alright," He was going to help this winter spirit give his remains the home they deserve," is there anything you want in particular?" upon the questioning look, he clarified," Do you want me to handle them in a certain way. Maybe wrap them up in cloth or put them in a box? Any personal belongings you might want? I'll do anything you want."
"Oh," Jack looked down at the lake again, although this time, it was to twist the ball of his foot into the ice," Actually, can you wrap them in a warm blanket? They've been down there in the cold and the dark for so long now…" Jack shivered at the thought and shook out his shoulders as he tried to get rid of the thought.
He hated thinking about the way his remains had been in the cold dark for so long already.
Danny hummed and gently suggested," Would you like me to leave one of my orbs with them? It'll be like a light, only it'll never go out and they won't ever have to be in the dark again."
Just the mere thought of his remains being illuminated visibly relieved Jack, and some tension left his shoulders," Yes," He said quietly," I would really like that."
This was his life, going around the world giving remains proper burials, with permission of course. But 99.99% of the time, all ghosts he had encountered had wanted him to give them a proper burial, and if they were murder victims, they wanted him to show the authorities their improper burial site to give relief to their families. He had actually helped with a few cold cases by doing that.
That was how he had run into Jack and his lake. Just by going around the world, giving ghosts and the people of the past the peace they deserve.
"Ok," Danny nodded his head and brought Jack out of his thinking," First you're going to have to show me where your headstone is, and then I'll go and buy you the warmest blanket I can find," Just hearing those words made Jack smile," then just give me the word and I'll move them."
Jack nodded his head, a gentle smile on his face as he quietly said," Thank you. I've always wanted to move them but," He shivered," I cant stand the thought of going down there."
"I understand." After all, who would want to go to the very place they were killed in," When would you like to start?"
The teenager didn't hesitate, "Now."
Three days later, had him kneeling on the frozen lake, with an elegantly carved wooden box next to him that was being cushioned by the softest, warmest, and most expensive blanket he could have gotten from the high-end shops of Russia.
It had taken him a while to find a nice and warm blanket, and after convincing Desiree for a single wish, the blanket now consistently, and endlessly, radiated a gentle warmth. The blanket felt like it was just come fresh out of the dryer, and would remain like that for the rest of its existence.
Jack was sitting in the snowbanks off to the side, with his friends sitting next to them.
It was certainly a surprise when he found out that his childhood fairy tales were, in fact, real ( although he will admit that he was slightly annoyed upon meeting north). But once he explained what he was doing, they were all there to support their friend and fellow guardian.
He looked over at Jack, who was leaning against the Bunny's figure as he held onto the Tooth fairy's hand, and with their exchanging of nods, he started.
Thankfully, his ability to sense remains that he was able to easily find each and every bone of Jack Frost, even his ears bones, that had gotten embedded in the silt a few feet away from the rest of his body.
Respectfully, he brought each bone up one by one, using intangibility to dry it off, before gently placing it into the plush and warmed box. He had already talked to Jack earlier about the placement of his bones within the box, but the teenager was so desperate to get his remains out of there, he left up the placement up to Danny. Only stating that he wanted a small, to medium-sized box.
Of course, Danny was not going to be frugal and got Jack a beautifully stained oak box that was medium-sized as he requested.
He placed each bone according to limb and grouping, his right femur with his right tibia, his left ulna with his left humerus, so on and so forth.
He was surprised when he was attracted to a ring that looked like it had been in that piece of ice for a very long time, but he thought nothing of it and brought it to the surface as well.
Before he placed the light orb and closed the lid, he took the ring out of the ice and went over to winter spirit," Jack," the teenager perked up as Danny kneeled to him and unfurled his hand to reveal the ring," I found this in some ice, is this yours?"
Jack stared at it for a few seconds, his gaze distant before he snapped back to reality and took the ring," It was my fathers," his voice was quiet as he ran his fingers over the surface," I completely forgot I had it in my pocket when I fell in."
He hummed in response, before motioning to the box with his head," I'm just about finished. I'll put in the light orbs and then we can go to your family plot."
The teenager nodded his head and leaned into the hand that was rustling his hair, taking in comfort from the big and burly man.
It was good to know that Jack had a support system with his friends.
Danny took his leave and went back to Jack's box.
It was certainly sad to see the remains in the box, but it was a relief to know that in less than an hour, Jack's remains would be able to rest with the rest of his family in their family plot.
Jack had expressed his desire to not look at his remains, and Danny respected his wishes. Even he felt disgusted when he saw his corpse, but he had a feeling that it would be a different type of sadness and maybe despair if he had to look upon his bare bones.
Instead of showing Jack that his remains were going to be in the light with his orb, he instead made a bright orb in his hand, rose it up enough for the teenager to see, and put it down into the box with three others. Each of the orbs going into each corner of the box. There was not an inch of darkness in that box.
He was sure that if it wasn't for the weathering seals that he had installed into the box, then the light would have been seeping out from under the lid after he closed it.
As soon as the box was closed and latched shut, he picked it up and walked over to the group that was still watching.
Silently, Jack led them to his family plot, where Danny would place Jack's remains into his grave in front of all of them. He made sure that he placed the box into Jack's casket, and stepped back once he was done.
He only stayed there long enough to exchange looks with Jack, give the teen a firm nod, before taking his leave.
He had no place there in such an emotional moment.
It wasn't until a few days later in Maine when Danny was bombarded with snowballs to the back of his head.
He knew immediately who it was.
Jack was leaning against a tree, a large grin on his face, and a healthier glow to his face as he threw a snowball up and down in his hand.
"So," Jack said with a grin," Up for a snowball fight?"
Danny just laughed, then it was Jack's turn to get pelted with snowballs.
"You're so on!"
