Hello Kataangers! This is for the Kataang week role swap prompt. I know, I haven't updated my other fic in so long guys I'm terrible. I hope you all can forgive me. I'm not sure when I'll get back to it, right now I'm just struggling with writing. This right here took me about four days and before I could write this much in like an hour. Anyways, I hope this is enjoyable for you. Also, if you're not already in it, join the Kataang discord server! I don't think links work here on FF, but if you go on . and look up Kataang, you should find it!
EDIT: I had some motivation for this story, so I updated the start to be Katara's dream before the part that I published before. I haven't thought this story out much so I was just having fun. Reread this chapter, I'll be adding a second one now, and I have an idea of the third.
"There are no waterbenders here. The Fire Nation took them all away a long time ago."
"You're lying. My source says there is one waterbender left in the southern water tribe. We're not leaving until we find the waterbender."
"If I tell you, do you promise to leave the rest of the village alone?"
Trading the Avatar, for this tiny village. He nodded.
"It's me, take me as your prisoner."
"LIAR!" He yelled as he shot a blast of fire that nearly hit the woman.
She recoiled farther into the corner. "It's the truth!"
"You're far too old to be the Avatar."
"The Avatar? What are you saying? The Avatar has been gone for years!"
Yon Rha laughed. "A noble attempt of sacrifice. But, you lied to me, and for that.."
Yon Rha lifted his right hand up and summoned a flame.
He pulled his arm back, and maniacally smiled at the watertribe woman on the floor, whimpering in fear.
"No, please!"
"Peasant." He said as he lunged forward.
"Mom!" I yelled as I ran into the tent.
I dropped to my knees as I saw the man standing over her.
"You.. my mother.."
"Yes. And now, I'll kill the rest of this wretched village until I find out-" His words were cut off by the shaking of the earth.
He turned towards me, the glow in my eyes obviously sending a shiver down his spine.
"It's you.. You're the Ava-"
Katara yelled as her head shot up, her breathing heavy from the nightmare.
It's been a while since I've had that one. Katara thought to herself about the dream.
She sighed as she laid back down.
Only about ten seconds passed before Zuko and Sokka came running in.
"Hands off of her!" Sokka yelled as he came through the door.
The two boys looked around the room and realized Katara was alone.
"What happened?" Zuko asked.
"Just a bad dream, I'm fine." Katara looked at the pitiful look on both of their faces. "Go back to whatever you two were doing and stop staring at me like that please." She said as she laid back down.
Zuko and Sokka looked at each other, and shrugged, as they walked back out of the room.
I guess Zuko doesn't feel like training today… Thank the Spirits. Katara thought to herself as she smiled at the fact she would get to sleep in.
She closed her eyes, and started to doze off, when a huge rush of air went through the room.
"Good morning Avatar!" The cheerful airbender amplified his voice with his airbending, causing an echo in the room.
Katara could feel the sunlight through her eyelids and groaned.
"I know my star pupil isn't still sleeping! Shouldn't you be sparring with Zuko around this time!?"
"Please, stop yelling." Katara begged as she covered both of her ears with pillows.
He laughed, and hopped over to the side of Katara's bed.
"Katara let's go. I have something I want to give you." Aang said politely, as he lifted the pillow off of her head to make eye contact with her.
"Something like what?"
"Something that I think will be invaluable for your training. And, also a lot of fun!" Aang said cheerfully as he grinned.
She sighed. "Fine. Just get out of here, I need to get ready."
Aang smiled, and bowed. "As you wish, pupil." He proceeded to jump backwards out of her window.
Katara felt the rush of blood in her cheeks as she thought about his smile. For the life of me, I can't understand how he's so happy all the time.
The two of them sat on the lowest platform in the Western Air Temple.
They had been meditating for less than five minutes, when Katara opened her eyes and looked at him.
She noticed how still he was, if it wasn't for the slight flaring of his nostrils he could've been presumed dead. His face was completely emotionless.
To her right, the statue of Yangchen, the airbending avatar from an entire cycle ago.
"Meditation requires the eyes to be closed Avatar." Aang said as he had opened his eyes to stare at her menacingly. "Come on, can't you be still for ten minutes?"
"Ten minutes!? Ten minutes doing this feels like an eternity!"
"When I was young, the elders made us meditate for an hour at least, some days even longer."
"I think I might genuinely lose my mind if I had to sit this still for an hour."
Aang chuckled. "You're far too dramatic."
"You said we'd be doing something fun!" Katara pouted.
"Discipline must always come first pupil!" Aang spoke almost mockingly as he put his finger in the air.
Katara fell back onto the earth with a groan. She picked up two rocks and started crushing and rebuilding them with her earthbending.
Aang noticed Katara seemed especially impatient today. She must really not be a morning person. He decided to skip meditation just for today.
"Well I was planning to give this to you later, but I guess now is fine. Wait right here and close your eyes." Aang said as Katara looked at him questioningly.
"No peeking or no present!" He said and she obliged, covering her eyes with her hands.
A present.. She tried to think of what it could be, but nothing came to mind.
He walked back out a few moments later, and smiled when he still saw Katara covering her eyes, facing the opposite direction.
He laid the present in both of his hands and walked up to her. "Ok, you can turn around now."
She turned and her eyes widened as she looked at the sleek wooden staff in his hands.
"What.. how.." Katara was too shocked to form a full sentence as he placed the glider in her hands.
Aang laughed as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I was cleaning up some of the rooms in the temple and I found it under a bed. The wood on the right wing was slightly damaged but I was able to replace it yesterday. It wasn't too hard."
Is this why he's been gone all day lately? She thought to herself. "You.. you did that for me?"
"Of course! As your airbending master it's my duty to provide you with a staff. I'm just glad I was able to find one in serviceable condition."
She grabbed one end of the staff and swung it in the direction of the cliffside, sending a slice of air into the earth.
Aang watched as she smiled in awe, and giggled. "Nice move."
"I've seen you do that before. I didn't realize how much stronger you can make attacks with this! That is so cool!" Katara yelled giddily as she continued sending a flurry untrained airbending attacks into the wall with her new staff.
"Alright, that's enough, let's get back to training." Aang said sternly, but he was obviously elated that Katara was so happy.
"Oh, right!" Katara smiled and bowed. "Thank you, Sifu Aang. It's an honor."
Aang smiled and bowed as well. "The honor is mine, Avatar."
Katara followed Aang as he flew alongside the Temple.
"Getting the hang of it?" He yelled.
"I think so!" She yelled back.
"Watch this!" Aang hopped up and stood on the glider, using a move he had learned from Gyatso. "I'm air surfing!"
"Show off!" She said, but she was still impressed.
He laughed as he pointed at one of the tiers of the temple. "Let's land over there!" He grabbed both of the handle bars again and started going down.
Katara ignored him, as she was focused on trying to air surf herself. She actually managed to continue in a straight line, although she was veering side to side a bit shakily. "Aang!" She yelled to get his attention.
He turned back and saw her. "Be careful! Make sure to keep your back foot steady!" He said concernedly.
Katara laughed joyously as she went. This is what freedom feels like! She thought to herself as the wind got so strong it knocked out her hair loopies.
Another gust of wind made her lose her footing, and her back foot veered off the wooden part of the staff onto the wing. "Oh no" was all she could manage to say before she started falling.
"Katara!" Aang, in a truly heroic manner, caught Katara on the top of his glider, and caught her new staff in his left hand at the same time.
They were going far too fast to land gracefully, and Katara's weight added to the glider made it too hard to pull up.
"Hang on!" Aang yelled as they went in for a crash landing.
Katara helped by providing an air cushion to break the fall, which caused them both to bounce a few more feet in the same direction.
As the dust settled and Aang opened his eyes, he saw Katara laying down a few feet away from him, crying and sniffling.
He said as he closed the distance between them. As he got closer he realized she was actually laughing.
She turned to face him, "That was so much fun!" She exclaimed as the tears ran down her face.
"You could've gotten hurt! You shouldn't try things like that without learning how to do it first!" The airbender exclaimed.
"I'm- sor-ry" She said as her laughing hysteria continued.
"You-" Aang planned to lecture her about discipline, but as he saw her laughing continue he couldn't help but smile. "Alright, let's just be more careful next time, Avatar."
So what'd you guys think? I actually got really into the idea of this story, but I started overwhelming myself so I just decided to write a few scenes of what a lesson could be like between them. If you made it this far thanks for reading!
