"Seven days ago, we recorded the following footage of Gojira in the Pacific."
Footage of Godzilla swimming slowly through the ocean waves, spines flashing every seven seconds, was played on a projection screen for a large room full of scientists and politicians invited from all over the world. China. America. Japan. Mongolia. Indonesia. Australia. Russia. France. England. The list went on and on.
Doctor Serizawa fixed his glasses and used a laser pointer to circle Godzilla's flashing spines as the footage played on loop.
"Please take note of the intervals in which the light appears."
One… Two… Three… Four… Five… Six… Seven… Flash.
One… Two… Three… Four… Five… Six… Seven… Flash.
"Doctor Serizawa. What does this mean?" Asked the representative from England.
"This is believed to be a method of long distance communication, sir." Serizawa replied.
"Communication with what, exactly?" The English representative asked.
"That is currently what we aim to determine. However, we have a strong theory with even stronger evidence pointing to this."
A second stream of footage was played right next to Godzilla's. It was the egg. And it was timed perfectly. Every time Godzilla's spines flashed, the egg flashed in unison. The exact same interval every single time before the loop replayed.
"And what is that?" The French representative asked.
"That is an egg belonging to a Titan located in China. Currently, Doctor Ilene Chen is monitoring its activity and generating daily reports. As of this morning, the egg has fallen silent and the flashing has ceased." Serizawa replied.
The representative from Russia stood and spoke in Russian, and his translator asked for him in English if this meant the egg was in danger of hatching.
"We do not have reason to believe that this egg presents a threat, sir."
The rep spoke in Russian again, and the translator responded with "That was not the question, Doctor Serizawa."
Serizawa nodded and cleared his throat.
"Apologies, sir. No, we do not believe the egg is in danger of hatching at this time." He replied.
"But it is active, is it not?" The American representative asked.
"Yes, sir. We have detected the life signs of the infant inside and can confirm there is a steady heartbeat."
The room erupted into murmurs and chatter, and Serizawa attempted unsuccessfully to get the room to quiet down before several of the representatives began shouting about how the emergence of any Titan, no matter how new to the world it may be as an infant, was dangerous for humanity and should be stopped before it had a chance to become a threat. Serizawa did his best to respond about the dangers of ignorance being more relevant than the dangers of a potential new Titan birthing, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
The entire meeting descended into total chaos forcing him to prematurely end his presentation and take his leave with Doctor Graham trailing close behind as he walked the hallways intent on reaching the helicopter launch pad.
"That certainly could have gone better." She joked.
"Indeed. The fools are driven by fear caused by their own lack of understanding." He growled softly.
"I agree, sensei."
"If only they'd let me have a chance to showcase all of our findings they'd have cause to relax."
"I'm sorry, sensei. Perhaps we can request a moderated meeting next time? One where microphones are controlled so as not to let everyone suddenly talk over each other, or you?"
He nodded firmly.
"Yes, sensei. I'll make the arrangements and reschedule a meeting as soon as I can."
"Thank you, Vivienne."
The pair of them reached the helicopter pad outside and began their journey home.
Meanwhile, in China, Doctor Ilene Chen stood in front of the egg listening to the soft rumble of the infant's beating heart. She couldn't help but to smile. All those years of learning her family history and their ancient connection to what grew inside… It was thrilling beyond description. Her own heart in her chest was beating a thousand miles a minute just trying to imagine the sight of Mothra's emergence into this world after millennia of slumber.
And it was just then that she felt a tap on her shoulder causing her to yelp with a little jump as she turned, playfully frowned, and gave her sister Ling a soft smack on the shoulder.
"I hate it when you do that." Ilene said, shaking her head the whole time.
"I know. That's why I do it." Ling replied with a chuckle. "And to be fair, you were the one always scaring me when I was trying to eat dinner when we were little. So consider this some friendly payback for those years."
"We were six, Ling. You should've gotten over that by now."
"I'll choose what to get over, thank you very much."
The pair of them laughed and stood shoulder to shoulder.
"How is she?" Ling asked.
"Sleeping." Ilene replied.
"Dreaming?"
Ilene turned her head to meet Ling's gaze out of the corner of her eye.
"Want to check?"
Ling nodded.
Reaching out with her right hand, Ilene grabbed Ling's left hand and held it up parallel to the floor. They closed their eyes, and it was at this moment that the scientists inside the observation room gathered at the glass.
"What are they doing?" One of them asked.
"They're going to sing." Thomas replied.
"They're wha-"
"Shh!" Thomas whispered harshly.
The other scientist fell quiet, and Thomas turned on the exterior microphones so they could all listen to the sounds coming from the chamber.
Ilene took the lead, singing on the syllable "Na" and extended by the vowel "ah" through a descending melodic arc before new lyrics took the forefront. Ling soon joined in repeating what her sister had begun as Ilene took a harmonic countermelody to support her sister ("Sacred Springs" from Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), watch?v=5Vl74hPRk34).
Their song resonated through the chamber. And in response to their voices the egg began emitting a soft blue light.
And within their minds the twins became privy to the dreams of Mothra…
She was dreaming of flight. The wind rushing past her face and around her wings generating the lift which helped her ascend higher and higher until all below her was an incomprehensible mash of colors and indistinct shapes. The clouds below had become nothing more than spectators to her majesty, as had the other airborne Titans of ages past which sadly no longer graced the skies with their presence.
But she remembered them. She remembered all of them. And with this remembrance came a twinge of sadness. To remember so well a generation of Titans never to be seen again. Extinct. Lost to the whims of time.
However, this sadness was fleeting. She could not change the past. But she could change the future. And in that spark of hope a warmth filled her heart to overshadow the darkness of what had come and gone.
To the warmth in her beating heart, the cold air of such a high altitude was blissful. Rising to the edge of the atmosphere where few other creatures could ever dare dream of reaching, she opened her wings and hovered briefly to admire the glow of the sun as it set beyond the horizon painting the skies a brilliant cascade of orange, yellow, red, purple, and blue.
It was beautiful.
This world. This life. This freedom.
It was so beautiful.
Mothra then allowed herself to go limp, tucking her wings to her sides as her body descended into free fall towards the Earth below. After bursting through the clouds her wings opened allowing her to level herself and begin a calm, lazy glide through the air off a single flap which carried her for miles before another was needed to sustain her altitude.
As the world below sailed past her Mothra couldn't help but wonder if she deserved this right to such freedom whilst so many others were bound to the limits of the Earth below. After all, what had she done? Was this even her? Or was it a memory passed down through the ages? Was it a memory at all? Or nothing but a dream of what could have been, or what she simply wished things could be? How much of this dream was or could ever be her reality?
As these doubts began rising her heart lost its warmth, replaced by the cold void of fear of the unknown and the unknowable. It was suffocating. Her lineage dated back farther than even she dared speculate. And the weight of the responsibility of upholding the honor of that lineage felt like the weight of the entire planet was quite literally on her back, threatening to snap her in two at any moment.
Sensing this, Ilene and Ling instinctively changed their song (classic Mothra theme, watch?v=zHEGAuqLsH8).
As the lyrics changed, in her dreams Mothra felt a sudden uplifting energy rising from deep within her heart. And at the same time a stream of brilliant blue light shot upwards from the ground below. Pausing mid-flight, and hovering in place, she looked to the Earth and saw the stream emerging from the mouth of Godzilla. And as the stream was halted, and his mouth closed, Godzilla silently locked eyes with her and held her gaze.
The warmth returned, accompanied by a sense of resurging pride and determination. Looking into the eyes of her Alpha she knew these doubts were unwelcome. What had come and gone had indeed come and gone. There was no changing it. But that was not her burden to bear. Her responsibilities came with the future, whatever it may mean and whatever it may bring. She need not fear the unknown. She only need focus herself on what was yet to come so that she might uphold her legacy and do her ancestors proud.
Mothra's wings thrust out to the sides and she released a shriek to the heavens above before a flash of light ended the dream, causing her to awaken once again within the egg as Ilene and Ling both opened their eyes and stopped singing.
"Ling, you okay?"
Ling was breathing hard and wiped a few beads of sweat from her brow.
"Yeah. I'm okay."
Ilene was in the same state and took a moment to catch her breath.
"The visions have never been that intense before." Ling added.
"I know. But Ling, tell me…"
The twins looked each other in the eye, still holding hands.
"Am I crazy? Or is that the first time Godzilla's appeared so vividly in her dreams?"
"You're not crazy, Ilene. It's true. That's the first time I've seen Godzilla so clearly. Up till now we've only heard his roar and seen a few hazy glimpses of him."
Ilene nodded.
"Any idea what it means? If anything?" She asked.
"If I were to present a plausible scientific theory," she began which got a chuckle from Ilene. "-I'd say it means her bond with Godzilla is growing stronger. And she's starting to understand the connection her lineage has had with him since time immemorial."
Ilene nodded. "I agree."
Both looked at the egg with wide smiles on their faces while only faintly hearing the shouts of the other scientists from behind the glass urging them to get out of the chamber and into the observation room. When they looked over their shoulder, the others were panicking and pointing to monitors showing armed intruders beginning to break into the complex surrounding the temple. Both sisters looked at each other and bolted for the observation room doors to ascertain the situation while the egg behind them began pulsing once again.
