Interrogation: Part 1
Location: The Batcave
When John entered the Batcave with his father, he had expected to see Batman, Alfred, his Mother, and possibly Damian. What he wasn't expecting was to find an entire army waiting for him. As he looked around at everyone, he was surprised to see; another teenager dressed as Robin, a younger-looking version of Katana, A white clay looking guy, a girl dressed all in red with a bow, who looked suspiciously similar to how Lian had, Batwoman, a girl dressed in purple and black and a girl dressed all in black.
The person who caught his attention the most, though was a ginger-haired woman sitting in a wheelchair. John suddenly found it very hard to breathe; memories he had been fighting to suppress suddenly all came rushing back as he stared at his mother. He had to remind himself that this woman might be another version of his mother, but she wasn't his mom to keep from running and throwing his arms around her.
A dark shadow suddenly blocked his view of his mother, snapping him back to the matter at hand. Glancing up, he met Batman's stern gaze. The older man looked over at his father's counterpart. "So this is him?" he said, the sentence being more a statement than a question.
He couldn't explain it, but Batman ignoring him like that irked him. "Excuse me, but I'm right here and if you have questions about me, asked them to me, not him," he said, pointing over at Nightwing.
The room suddenly grew quiet as everyone turned their attention to him. Batman looked at him sternly, and he was sure the old man was contemplating what to do with him. Finally, Batman grunted, "Well now that you mention it, I have some questions for you," he said.
John crossed his arms. "Go ahead, I have nothing to hide," he said, although that statement wasn't exactly true. He did in fact of plenty of things to hide.
Batman's eyes narrowed on him, "I'm glad you said that because I was just about to suggest we do a DNA test just to be sure you are who you say you are." he said.
John wasn't surprised by this request. He had worked closely enough with his grandfather to predict his moves; he quirked an eyebrow at the request, anyway. "May I ask why, sir? Do you not trust the word of the martian?" he asked.
Batman crossed his arms. "If you are Nightwings, son, then you should know the answer to that. Plus, if she's right then you have nothing to fear," he said.
John leveled a glare at him. "First off, let's get something straight, you're not scaring me so you can knock off this interrogation act. Second, I never said I wouldn't do the test, I just asked if you trusted the martian.
The entire room, excluding Batman, was shocked by the boy's standoffish behavior as no one besides Nightwing had the guts to stand up to Batman. Arrowette leaned over to Robin and whispered, this one is asking for a beating," she said. Robin nodded.
Batman said nothing, he just took out a swab. John also said nothing. He just opened his mouth and let the man get a sample of his saliva.
A normal DNA test took at least an hour to come back, but thanks to the high-tech equipment in the Batcave, the results came back in less than twenty minutes. Batman, Nightwing, and Oracle quickly read over the results.
Everyone waited patiently for Batman to reveal the results; however, when he said nothing after a while, Alfred spoke up, "Well, Sir, don't keep us waiting," he said.
Batman grunted, "It's true, the boy is biologically Dick's and Barbara's," he said.
John wanted to huff sarcastically and say of course I am, but refrained from pissing off the Bat anymore than he already had. He knew it wouldn't be a smart idea to make an enemy out of Batman, even if this one wasn't half as scary as his Batman back home was.
A sniffled sob caught his attention. Looking over, he noticed for the first time that his mother's counterpart was crying. "I, I can't believe it's true," she said.
John smiled shyly at her, "Don't worry Mom, I promise I'm not that bad," he said, making Barbara smile at him.
The ginger giggled. "Oh please, I bet you 're just as mischievous as Dick over here," she said, pointing.
Nightwing put a hand over his heart, "Ouch! that hurt Bab's," he said.
John smiled. He had never seen his mother act so light-hearted before, and he decided that if the man in front of him was just like his father had been that he liked him. He could suddenly understand what his sister meant when she said he was an amazing dad to have.
A grunt snapped him back to reality. He looked over at Batman, who was now looking at him a little kinder. "Now that we are sure that?" he looked over at the boy.
John indulged knowing what he was asking, "John, John Thomas Grayson," he said.
Batman/ Bruce felt his heart skip a beat at hearing the boy's middle name. He couldn't believe Richard gave his son his father's name. The sentiment touched him. "As I was saying, now that we know John is in fact Dick and Bab's we can discuss living arrangements," he said.
Dick and Bab looked at each other and smiled. Dick looked over at his adopted father. "He can stay with us, Batman," he said.
Batman looked at his son. "Are you sure?" he asked.
Dick looked at the boy that had been revealed to be his son and felt his heart skip a beat. He pushed down the wave of fear that threatened to overtake him. "I'm positive," he said.
Batman nodded, "Alright, now that's taken care of, let's talk about your crime-fighting days," he said.
John gulped as he took in the dark look his parents were giving him. Well, he was in trouble.
Barbara wheeled herself closer to her son. "Yes, let's talk about that," she said.
