"Oh, good. You guys haven't started yet. I lost track of time and was afraid I'd missed dinner," Penny flung open the door to apartment 4A and began preparing a plate from the containers spread across the coffee table. Glancing at Leonard, she commented, "Wow, you're actually joining us tonight. I thought for sure you'd be out with that girl again. You've been out every night I haven't been working the past two weeks."
Raj leaned over to whisper in Howard's ear. Howard glanced at the blonde sitting across from him before stifling a chuckle and replying, "Everyone puts on a few pounds after the holidays. Have you looked in the mirror lately?" This remark caused Raj to open his mouth, then quickly close it, setting his plate on the coffee table.
"You guys are pigs," Penny exclaimed, also setting her plate on the coffee table, standing up, and rushing from the apartment.
Once Penny was no longer in earshot, Raj was able to speak, "Did you just call me fat?"
Howard rolled his eyes, "Yes. And clearly, Penny didn't like you pointing out she's put on a few pounds recently."
"I'll go talk to her," Leonard was the third person to drop his plate on the coffee table, following his neighbor out of the apartment.
Leonard found the hallway empty and knew Penny has retreated to her apartment. He knocked gently before opening the door a few inches. Sticking his head around the door, he made his presence known, "Penny? Can I come in?" She opened the door further, inviting him inside. "They don't know. They're just making the same comments they've always made. Don't listen to what they say."
"I'm getting fat, Leonard. I can't keep hiding this, can I?"
Shaking his head, he corrected her, "First of all, you're not getting fat. You're four months pregnant and your baby is growing. I can help you tell them if you want. They'll be surprised, but I'm sure they'll be supportive. Raj might not be able to talk to you, but he'll probably want to throw you a baby shower once he knows."
"What am I supposed to say? I slept with Kurt and I'm having his baby because I couldn't go through with getting an abortion. Oh yeah, I still haven't decided if I'm keeping the baby or finding a family to adopt it?" Penny remarked, full of emotion.
"I'm going to do something and I need you to let me," Leonard shifted closer to Penny and wrapped his arms around his friend. Feeling her relax after a moment, he continued, "You think you're ready to go back and finish dinner? I can go first and tell them to leave you alone if you want."
Penny shook her head as Leonard released her from his embrace. "That's okay. It's only Howard and Raj I need to tell. Sheldon figured it out about two weeks ago. You guys claim he's only ever focused on himself, but he's been really sweet since he guessed what was going on with me."
Howard and Raj watched as Leonard followed Penny from the apartment. Raj shook his head, "How can Leonard keep saying they aren't sleeping together? It's so obvious. It would make life easier for all of us if they would just come out and say it. Also, where can I find a girl like Lindsey that doesn't care if the guy she's dating is sleeping with another woman?"
"They aren't having coitus," Sheldon defended his roommate and neighbor. "Did you ever think that maybe Leonard is the only one of you that doesn't blatantly ogle her the moment she enters the room? They're just friends. Besides, you can't talk to one woman without drinking alcohol. You honestly think you'd be able to get two women?"
"You're trying to cover for them. I give you props; you've really learned to control the twitching when lying," Howard pointed out.
"I live with Leonard and I can hear everything that goes on in Penny's apartment. I'd know if they were having coitus. Can we go back to eating so you guys can leave?" Sheldon's mood continued to sour as the other men speculated on what was or wasn't happening between Penny and Leonard.
Leonard opened the door to his apartment, ushering Penny inside in front of him. Raj, having retrieved a beer in the time they were across the hall, was the first to speak, "I'm sorry, Penny. That was rude of me. I shouldn't have said that." Penny nodded and offered a small smile, silently accepting his apology.
"Do you want me to tell them?" Leonard offered, standing next to his neighbor.
"No," replied Penny, shaking her head. "I'll tell them."
Howard was the one to question what was going on, "Tell us what?"
"I don't want to make a big deal out of it because I still haven't decided what I want to do," Penny quietly says, looking at the men staring back at her. Sheldon gave her a small nod, encouraging her to keep going.
Taking a breath, Penny continued sharing her news with the scientists who had somehow accepted her into their little group. "First of all, I went to set the record straight about what happened between Leonard and I on Halloween. I kissed him. He stopped it because I was drunk and he didn't want to feel like he was taking advantage of my drunkenness."
"You've been letting us think the two of you slept together!" Howard pointed his finger at Leonard.
"I just said something happened between us after her Halloween party. I never said what that something was," Leonard defended himself. "You guys automatically assumed we slept together. Maybe you should let Penny finish what she's trying to say."
Raj smiled at the blonde, "Sorry, Penny. What are you trying to tell us?"
Pausing to gather her thoughts and take another deep breath, Penny hesitated. Leonard gave her a nod, encouraging her to continue. "After Leonard stopped us from kissing, I went back to my apartment and I kind of slept with someone else. We were both drunk and apparently, we weren't that careful because I'm pregnant and having a baby in July."
"Omigod!" Raj squealed, jumping from the couch in excitement. "Do you know if you're having a boy or a girl yet? What are you going to name it?"
"I'm only four months. I don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet. I haven't even decided if I'm going to keep it or find a family to adopt it," Penny quietly shared. "I hate the way this is happening. Do you think you can maybe not make a big deal out of it?"
The men were silent at her revelation. Finally, Howard spoke, "So it's not Leonard's baby?"
"Howard! No," Leonard scolded the engineer. "It's not my baby. Penny and I have never slept together so there is absolutely no chance of it being my baby. Now, can we respect Penny's wishes, and not make a big deal out of this? Let's get back to dinner. I'm sure the food is cold by now."
