"It was delivered this morning and we put it together as soon as she left for work," explained Leonard into his phone. "She should be home soon. The other guys are waiting in her apartment. I'm supposed to meet her in the hallway so she isn't completely surprised."
Halfway across the country, Wyatt smiled, "You'll be sure to tell her the crib is from her mother and me, right?"
"Yes, sir. We'll make sure she knows its from you and Susan. And I'll have her call you as soon as she sees it."
"Thanks, Leonard. Susan and I appreciate knowing she's got you and your friends looking out for her," Wyatt and Susan had frequent conversations on the matter and he really meant what he said.
Noting the time on his watch, Leonard wrapped up the conversation, "Penny's shift ended ten minutes ago, so she should be home anytime. I better go wait for her."
Penny stopped in her tracks halfway up the last flight of stairs when she saw Leonard in the hallway, standing up straight from leaning against his door. "I can tell you're exhausted, but please don't be angry."
"What did you do?" She questioned, climbing the last few stairs.
"It wasn't my idea," he started, crossing the hallway to apartment 4B. "Your father called me with a few questions. I mentioned the conversation to the guys and Raj wanted to do this for you. I just gave him your spare key and helped a little."
Opening her apartment door, Penny was surprised to find Raj, Howard, and Sheldon waiting on the other side of the door with piles of baby gear around them, "What is all of this?"
Raj took a sip of the beer in his hand and answered, "You kept saying you didn't want a baby shower, but you hadn't gotten anything yet and the baby will be here in a month. We got to talking and realized how expensive everything would be, so we got some essentials for you."
"Thank you," Penny held her arms out toward the astrophysicist as she blinked back tears. "You have no idea how much I appreciate all of this."
"We saved all the receipts so if it's the wrong formula or you don't like the clothes or something, we can exchange it for something different," Howard chimed in.
Crossing the living room to Penny's bedroom door, Leonard motioned her closer. "This all started because your dad called me to ask if you had gotten a crib or anything yet. Your parents bought this and had it shipped. It was delivered this morning." He opened the door to reveal a crib wedged between the side of Penny's bed and the window. "It's not really the best spot for it, but we can help you rearrange for everything to fit better."
Now hugging Leonard, Penny thanked the scientists again, "Thank you for this. The crib is really from my mom and dad?"
"Yeah, your dad worked it all out with Leonard. They made sure it would be delivered on a day when someone would be here to set it up for you," shared Howard. Quickly retrieving a gift bag from behind the couch, he held it out to her, "This is from my mom."
Penny peaked in the bag as she ushered the guys out of her bedroom and back into the living room. Pulling the gift out, she gasped as she held an orange and teal blanket in her hands, "This is beautiful. Be sure to thank her for me."
Smiling, Howard explained, "She crocheted it herself. She started it a while ago and didn't know if you were having a boy or girl yet, so she asked me what colors I thought you liked. I hope I guessed correctly."
"It's perfect," she replied as she gave the engineer a hug.
"My mother also said to let you know she's going to make you some casseroles and soup and stuff to have on hand for after the baby is born. She said you wouldn't have time to cook and when you did, you'd be too tired to cook. I tried telling her you would just eat take out with us, but she wouldn't hear it."
Chuckling at how well the men who'd known her for less than a year really knew her, she agreed, "You're right. So, I guess we're all eating Mrs. Wolowitz's cooking after I have the baby."
"She also said to let you know to call if you need anything. You might even be able to get her to climb four flights of stairs to help you," Howard laughed at the thought of his mother struggling up the stairs of the apartment building.
"Thank you so much for all of this. Knowing I've got your guys' support has made everything a little easier for me. I wasn't going to have this baby initially," Penny revealed. "Then I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it or not. I had lunch with Mrs. Wolowitz a few months ago and she suggested I talk to my baby about what I was going to do. I took a nap and had a dream that we were all at the park and when I had to leave for work, you guys offered to babysit so I didn't have to drop the baby off at daycare. That was when I knew I would be okay to raise this baby by myself. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I'd have my friends to help."
Raj was the first to approach Penny to hug her, "I'll be happy to help you with anything. Just call. Well, maybe text would be better in case I don't have a beer in my hand."
"Same, call anytime," Howard joined the pair's hug.
As Leonard put his arms around the group hug, he reminded Penny, "I'm right across the hall if you need anything." The group looked at Sheldon who was standing a few feet away. "Sheldon, come on."
"Fine. I'll help you, but I'm not joining that ridiculous hug," the man relented.
