"Penny… Penny… Penny," Sheldon punctuated his knocks with his neighbor's name.
The disheveled blonde opened the door, "Sheldon. I just got Chloe to sleep. I swear if your knocking wakes her up, you will not hear the end of it. Can't you text me or something instead of knocking all the time?"
"Sorry," He stepped past her and into the apartment. Taking in the sight in front of him, he was uneasy, but chose to not comment on the state of the apartment. "You know Leonard had to go back to New Jersey for his grandfather's funeral. He asked me to check on you while he's gone. So, I'm checking on you if he asks."
Penny gave him a small smile. "That's sweet of you. I was about to take a shower. Chloe's asleep, but would you mind listening for her in case she wakes up? I promise I'll be quick. My hair is disgusting. I can't remember when the last time I washed it was."
"I don't know, Penny. Maybe it would be better to wait until Howard and Raj get here and ask one of them to watch her for you. They're bringing dinner. That's why I came over: to let you know they're picking up Chinese if you want to join us."
"That'd be great. But can you please listen for Chloe while I take a shower before they get here? She just ate and has a clean diaper. She'll probably be asleep the entire time. Ten minutes. That's all I'm asking for," Penny pleaded. "Please, Sheldon?"
Having followed Penny into her bedroom, Sheldon looked over the side of the crib at the sleeping three-week-old. "Fine. Ten minutes, but I'm timing you. I will be knocking on that door in ten minutes and one second." Penny gave the man a quick hug before rushing into the bathroom and closing the door behind her. Sheldon sat on the edge of Penny's bed and rest his arms on the rail of the crib. "Hello, Chloe. I don't know what goes on over here, but it'd be great if you stop crying all night. The walls are thin & you're keeping me awake. Not to mention, I can tell your mom isn't sleeping and I haven't seen her apartment in this state of disarray since she moved in." Hearing a knock on the door, Sheldon looked between the sleeping newborn and the living room. "I'll be right back."
Howard and Raj were waiting on the other side of the door, "What are you doing over here? You weren't across the hall, so Raj thought you might be here."
"I came over to let Penny know you were on your way with Chinese. I somehow agreed to keep an eye on Chloe while she takes a shower. I guess this is what Leonard does when he's over here all the time," Sheldon shrugged his shoulders while glancing back towards the bedroom.
As if on cue, Penny emerged from the bedroom, "Hi, guys. Thanks for keeping an eye on Chloe for me, Sheldon. I'll be over in a few minutes." Not long after, Penny let herself into her neighbors' apartment with her daughter in her arms. Settling in the armchair, she adjusted the infant, hoping she would stay asleep through dinner. "Do you mind putting a plate together for me? I can't reach the food without waking Chloe."
"Here," Raj leaned over and reached for the newborn, "Chloe's had hardly any time with her Uncle Raj. Enjoy your meal with both hands free."
"Thanks, Raj. I really appreciate the help from all of you since Chloe and I came home from the hospital."
Leonard returned to Pasadena three days after Penny joined their friends for dinner. Reaching the fourth-floor landing, he heard the newest resident of the building wailing and considered going over to help Penny. Looking at the suitcase in his hand, he proceeded to open the door to apartment 4A. "The baby hasn't stopped crying since you left. I don't know what kind of voodoo magic hold you have over Chloe, but Penny needs your help."
"I heard Chloe as I was coming up the stairs. I'm going to put my suitcase in my room, then I'll check on Penny. How was it besides Chloe crying all week?"
Turning around from his computer, Sheldon shared, "I enjoyed not having someone blatantly ignore the bathroom schedule. Koothrappali wasn't late once picking me up for work. Aside from being alone and Chloe's constant crying, I enjoyed my time while you were away."
"Great. Have Koothrappali drive you every day; I won't be heartbroken over not driving you. I'm going to let Penny know I'm home," Leonard said, opening the door and stepping back into the hallway. Making his presence known as he let himself into Penny's apartment, he cleared his throat. "Hey, how's it going? Looks like you could use some help cleaning up in here."
Penny looked up from Chloe in her arms. "Thank God you're back. I'm surprised Sheldon didn't try to sneak in to clean it for me like he did after I moved in. Can you get her to sleep? Sheldon's annoyed she's been crying so much while you were gone. I think she hates me and enjoys me begging her to sleep. She'll sleep all day, but won't settle down once it's dark."
"Don't worry, we'll get her back to sleeping and not crying all night," Leonard motioned for Penny to pass him the infant. As she did, the blanket Chloe was wrapped in fell to the floor. Penny stooped to retrieve it and handed it to Leonard, "Let's get you swaddled again and see if we can't let your mommy get some sleep."
Leonard shifted to hold Chloe in one arm as he spread the blanket on the couch, adjusting it until it was smooth. Laying her head at one corner of the blanket, he expertly wrapped the newborn in the blanket and lifted her into his arms again. Penny watched in awe as her daughter's fussing slowed and her breathing became steady. "You need to teach me your magic ways. I tried doing that while you were gone, but she'd always get a hand free. I think she'd be just about asleep and she'd move and hit herself in the face or something. That would start the crying all over again."
"Here," Leonard passed the bundle back to his neighbor. "Put her down and I'll show you with a stuffed animal." Standing in the doorway of her bedroom, Leonard looked on as Penny whispered to Chloe before laying her in the crib in the corner.
