Harry lay in his cupboard silently crying to himself. It had been Dudley's birthday today, not that it meant anything to Harry. The only difference between today and any other day was that dinner was much harder to make than normal. Of course, he didn't get to eat any of it, Dudley had made sure of that.
The day actually hadn't been that bad, well as bad as any day was for Harry. That is until Dudley had cornered him in the bathroom to taunt him. Normally Harry could ignore Dudley's taunts, but today Dudley had gotten to him. "There's a reason you don't get anything on your birthday. It's 'cause you aren't normal, and that's also why you don't have any friends either!"
Harry hadn't let Dudley see him cry then, that would have only shown weakness and made things worse. Harry knew he wasn't normal. Normal boys didn't have to sleep under the stairs. Normal boys got to eat dinner every night. Normal boys didn't have to deal with "families" like the Dursleys.
*I can't let them see they can get to me, I can't let them see they hurt me.* Harry had been repeating these things to himself, he had nothing else to do while lying in his "bed" trying to sleep. *No,* he thought. *They can only hurt me if I let them. I can't let them hurt me. I can't let them hurt me. I can't let them hurt me.* Harry continued to repeat this to himself till it became. *I won't let them hurt me. I won't let them hurt me. I won't let them hurt me.* Eventually, he had made up his mind, *they can no longer hurt me.*
As soon as Harry became firm in his resolve, a bright green light flashed before his eyes blinding him. When he could see again, he saw a glowing green ring floating in the cupboard. The ring looked almost like an old family's signet ring, with some sort of crest on the top. As Harry watched the ring ring float there, not sure what to do, he heard a voice that must have been coming from the ring.
"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight,
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power - Green Lantern's Light!"
Harry had no idea what that meant or what a Green Lantern was, but after hearing those words he felt compelled to take the ring. He slowly reached forward and grabbed the ring. When he touched it he felt a wave of power rush over him. It was if he could feel his body properly for the first time. He could see clearly too, the dark of the cupboard looked like a well-lit room. Harry knew if all this came from touching the ring, something far grander must come from putting it on. He cautiously put the ring onto his right finger. Again, there was a blinding flash of emerald light.
Harry blinked only to find himself in a circular tiered room. Sitting on the tiers going up as far as Harry could see was little blue men in red robes. "Welcome Harry Potter of Earth." Harry looked up to see one of the little blue men looking down and him and speaking. "You have been chosen by the ring you now wear to join our corps, as the newest Green Lantern."
7 Years Later
"Well done Harry, I am proud of you." Harry looked up at Orlan, his Green Lantern mentor. "You have passed the trials and the guardians have given you your first assignment." Harry swelled at pride at this. So much had changed after he had joined the corps, he had found the family that he so desperately craved during his childhood. He had trained hard under Orlan and the guardians to learn his new skills and powers, to live up to the name of the Green Lantern.
"You are being assigned to your home world of Earth," Orlan continued. "You are to leave tomorrow." Harry nodded solemnly; this was a big moment for him. He knew this was his purpose in the universe, to protect those who could not protect themselves. However, he felt a great sadness at the thought of leaving. Oa had become his home, and Orlan had become as a father to him. He had always known this day would come though, and he was excited to see his home world again for the first time in almost a decade.
"Thank you Orlan," Harry said. "You have done more for me than you could ever know." Orlan smiled back at Harry, "Sure thing kid."
The trip to earth was uneventful, travailing through space most often was. As Harry entered the solar system he looked down on earth. Compared to the universe at large, earth was nothing special. It was a fairly normal sized planet orbiting around a slightly small star in a galaxy that did not have much relevance on the inter-galactic level. But there is something about one's home world that is special. It is the place where the gravity feels right, it's the place where you can walk down the street and look like a native, it's the place you call home.
Harry made his descent and landed on a smaller island in the northern hemisphere. England, his home country. He landed outside a small village to the north, practically in Scotland. He thought back to the hours of lessons that he had received from the guardians. He had learned his planet's history and geography and culture. As well as the fact that there were people on his planet that were special, even on a inter-galactic level. You see, earth had an unusually large chance of producing people with unheard of powers. There was the Kryptonian, the speedster, and the Atlanteans.
Harry traveled through the countryside of his home world, sometimes walking, sometimes flying, just enjoying the sensation of being home. As he was passing by an old castle, he suddenly heard someone scream out in pain. Harry quickly took off and flew over to the castle where the sound had come from. He flew in through a window into what looked like a throne room.
Inside he saw a female who looked about his age fighting, and seemingly losing to a group of about six people with masks and dark robes. All of the people were holding what looked like wooden sticks. The sticks were throwing light out of the ends of them towards the other party. The group with masks had backed the female into one of the corners of the room and were bombarding her with the flashes of light.
Harry absorbed all of this information in the time it took him to fall from the window to the floor. He didn't know the circumstances surrounding this fight, but he did know that unless the female was ten times more powerful than the figures in masks, that this was not an honorable fight.
As Harry landed, he used his ring to create a wall between the figures with masks and the female, who had just fallen on the steps leading up to the dais. "Whoa! What's going on here?" asked Harry. He had landed behind the figures in masks and had startled everyone in the room.
The figures in masks spun around to look at him. One of them raised their stick at him and shot a flash of light. Harry shifted his weight just enough so that the beam of light passed by him. *Okay, if that's how this is how it's going to be,* he thought. Harry went on the attack.
With a flash of his ring, Harry created a bubble shield around him and created a couple of chains with weights on the end, a personal favorite weapon of his. He swung the chain around taking out two of his opponents neatly. Almost dancing through the beam of light being shot at him, Harry made his way through the figures with masks. Some of them he dispatched with his chains, some with beams from his ring, and some with his fists.
After a few minutes, Harry took a quick glace around to see there was only one more opponent left, the only one who had not been wearing a mask. She was defiantly a female, but not one you would want to meet, ever. Her hair and face looked like one who had been in prison for years and had not bathed since. Her eyes showed the insanity behind them. "I'm impressed, Emerald Knight," the woman said to Harry. "There are not many who could have taken that many Death Eaters down alone." She gave Harry a smile that would have chilled a polar bear to its core. "That will just make your defeat all the sweeter."
She sent a plethora of multi-colored beams of light at Harry almost faster than he could comprehend. He quickly made a shield and sword with his ring and tried to advance forward. He made it almost to the witch before one of her spells hit him in the shin. He immediately felt his lower leg shatter. He cried out in pain and dove forward, rolling into his opponent. Caught by surprise, she fell down and rolled as well. Harry ended up on top, one foot on her chest, the other on the floor searing in pain, his ring pointed straight at her head.
Harry looked at her. It was against the Green Lantern ways to kill, but Harry had personally come to the conclusion that there were some people who were too dangerous to be left alive. Harry used his ring to summon the dagger he kept in a pocket dimension and cut off her head.
Harry looked up, and removed all of his creations. He floated up and made a quick cast for his leg. Most of the figures on the floor would live, some would not. Harry floated over to the only other conscious person in the room, the female the so-called Death Eaters had been fighting.
"Hey, don't be afraid," he said to her. "You'll be alright now." She looked at him with wide unbelieving eyes. "What is your name?" Harry asked her. "H-Hermione, Hermione Granger," she said shakily. "W-Who are you?" asked Hermione, obviously still frightened by what she had just been through. Harry smiled at her. "I'm Harry Potter, defender of earth."
