Harry looked out the windows at the stars. They were beautiful today, gems of light against the endless void. The stars were important today, important to Harry's plan. He turned away from the window and walked down the hall towards his workshop.
Harry could feel the hum of the ship's engines beneath his feet. The ship that had been his home his whole life. It was said that long ago, the human kind had a homeworld. A green and blue world full of life. If such a place had ever existed, it had been millennia since any human had stepped foot on it. Now the human race were nomads, they travelled the stars never staying anywhere for long periods of time.
Just like everyone else, Harry had grown up on the H.S.S. Detritus. His parents had worked the pipes on the ship. When he was still a toddler, they had died in a freak accident and Harry was given to his aunt and uncle for care. They had been horrible to him. They worked in accounting and had bias towards mechanical workers. Thankfully, Harry had been able to keep away from them in other parts of the ship.
Not everything in Harry's life was horrible though. There was one bright and shining light in his life; his best friend, Hermione Granger. Harry met Hermione when they were both around nine years old. Their classes had met up to take a field trip to the fighter jet hanger. They were both still young enough that they dreamed of being pilots. They got paired together for a simulator run, and shocked their teachers by almost making it. From that day they had been inseparable.
Harry smiled as he put the final couple of parts into his project. The thought of Hermione would always do that to him. After they finished their schooling, Harry started training with the engines crew and Hermione began learning from the ship historian. Now Hermione was the head historian for the Detritus and had been off ship for the past six months doing research. She was scheduled to return to the ship later that day and Harry still had so much to do to prepare for it. He had been working on this project for months now. So many fine details and intricacies to work out.
Harry looked down at his chronometer. *Stars,* he thought, *It'll have to do.* He stowed his device in his pocket and ran out to meet the transport. The Detritus only had one ship-to-planet transport, so the one that was about to dock had to be the one with Hermione on it. The transport was simple, for a spaceship, designed more for function than comfort. It was roughly cone shaped and had five engines, engines Harry knew well.
The transport met the ship with a small jolt and began the air pressure and decontamination procedures. Harry bounced lightly on the balls of feet, waiting for Hermione to come out. With a hiss and a click, the door opened and the dozen or so people inside walked out.
"Hermione!" Harry cried when he saw her. "Harry!" She cried as she ran forward. Although it had been six months she had hardly changed. Her brown hair was a touch longer and she had grown more tan from natural sunlight. Harry threw his arms around her and buried his face in her hair.
"It's good to see you Harry." She pulled back and looked at him.
"Let me put my stuff up and we can get dinner."
"Better idea," Harry said and grabbed her hand. "Follow me."
Hermione rolled her eyes at him, but followed him anyway. He led her down the hallways, past pipes and dials and other important spaceship things. He led her towards the "top" of the ship. They walked into an unusual shaped room. It was large and domed shaped, why it was on the ship was anyone's guess.
"Okay Harry, care to tell me why I'm here?" Harry smiled at her and put the device down in the middle of the room. Hermione raised an eyebrow at the device. It was about the size of her palm and flat except for a small lens in the middle. Harry pushed a button on the device and it exploded.
All Hermione could see was light. Light filled the room; on the wall, the ceiling, even floating in the air. Hermione recognized these lights, they were stars. Beautiful and magical.
"Oh, Harry. It's lovely." Hermione looked over at Harry who was smiling at her. He reached down and pushed another button on the device. Slow music began to fill the room, adding to the effect.
He reached out his hand towards her. "My lady, may I have this dance?" Hermione took his hand and he pulled her in and they began to dance. They swayed and twirled among their very own night sky. The stars in the room matched the stars in their eyes.
The music slowly came to an end and they stood there in each other's arms, slowly swaying to a song only they could hear. "Thank you Harry," Hermione said quietly. "Of course Hermione, anything for you." Hermione looked up at him and smiled. So they stayed like that, holding each other, dancing among the stars.
