Chapter One

The soft drizzling of rain hitting the hood of the police cruiser grounded Bella as she looked out to the mass of trees around. The deep emerald leaves and moss that was on the brown barks of the trees were constantly reminding her she wasn't in Phoenix anymore, or Arizona.

Renee had stepped up to the plate and had begged Bella to stay in Phoenix, she could stay home for the rest of the baseball season, and she could take care of Bella. Bella of course had been mortified at the thought of Renee deciding now she would try and be the mother she never was, partly because she wasn't that good of a mother and the other part being she didn't want to be babied. It would be utterly degrading, for both.

Charlie was glancing at her in the corner of his eye, as though he was wanting to try and say something but decided not to. It was a good thing, neither of them was very good with conversing with each other. They weren't talkative people to begin with. So, he must have known it would have been useless, especially when the doctors told him not to pressure Bella into remembering things too fast.

Bella knew she might be a pathetic girl to look at. She still had her rib belt wrapped smug around her ribs, in order to have them heal properly. She had to make sure not to breathe too deeply or else she would be in pain. She had that stupid cast on her left leg, reminding her once more of how she had apparently gotten her injuries.

Apparently, Bella had been dating a boy at school named Edward Cullen, for about two weeks, before he had asked her if she wanted to go play baseball with his family after having her come to his house to meet the rest of his family properly. She had come home from the baseball game crying and claiming she didn't want to be stuck in a small town like her mother had been (obviously Bella and Edward had broken up during the said baseball game) before she disappeared to go back to Phoenix.

Edward followed her, in order to tell her he was sorry and wanted to get back together with her. He had his foster dad, Dr. Carlisle Cullen, come with him and they managed to get her to decide to come with them back to Forks. Only, Bella had fallen three flights of stairs and ended up getting her mass of injuries. The only thing that couldn't be accounted for was the bite mark on her wrist, a human bite mark.

Edward and Dr. Cullen had taken her to the hospital but left, claiming they weren't going to come back to Forks, they were moving to L.A. since Dr. Cullen had gotten a better job offer. To say the least Charlie was more than pissed, since Edward was the cause of all of this, he was the reason why his daughter was experiencing amnesia. (There was little chance Bella would ever have her memories come back)

Bella was soon welcomed with a small, two-bedroom white paneled house Charlie and Renee had bought in their early years of their marriage. It was a comforting sight; it had been three years since she had been to this house. It didn't look any different.

Charlie opened the front door, holding his breath as she walked in, as though he was seeing if anything and everything would trigger a memory. All she saw was the same furniture from before, the same plaid patterned sofa with the same leather recliner. The same floor lamp with a tan lamp shade, and the deep green rug spread across the carpeted floor (stained and lovingly worn, when it came to the carpet). Along with her embarrassing school photos lined up on the mantel of the fireplace, for everyone who entered the house to see.

The wooden stairs that went upstairs needed to be worked on, some of the wood panels replaced. They groaned some as Bella went up them, reminding her how the house was a little bit older than her. It was two decades old, which meant two decades' worth of work was needed to put into this house. Charlie would never fix the house, she knew this, he was too busy stuck in the past, though she hoped the rest of the time she would be in Forks, she could help him get out of the past.

Her bedroom, which faced the west side of the house, looked the same but not at the same time. Her favorite cacti were throughout the room, along with a couple of her fake plants. Posters of her favorite Shakespearean plays were taped up on the light blue walls of the peaked ceiling room. The yellow lace curtains of her room were pushed open so she would be able to see out to the front yard, while her rocking chair from her baby days was in the corner of her bedroom. Her white cast iron bed had a purple bedspread over the mattress along with some pillows that were the same color. An old quilt Grandma Swan had made for her when Renee was pregnant with her, was folded neatly at the end of her bed.

Sitting down on her bed, Bella glanced over at her desk where her secondhand computer was, with a modem phone line stapled on the floor to the closest phone jack. Something compelled her to go over to the desk, and she began to look through the drawers of the desk, pausing when she saw a purple diary sitting smug in the middle of one of the drawers. Perhaps she had written down all that had happened through the three months she had been here.

Opening the diary, she flipped past the entries that were from before she had come to Forks, apparently, this year. She stopped when she saw the entry of the night before she had come here in January.

January 16th, 2005

Renee is doing as she always does, not listening to me. You would think seventeen years of living with me, she would realize when to let me be. Phil keeps assuring her it's fine for me to come up to Forks and stay with Charlie. It's a good thing neither man held any opinion of the other. It was awkward, though, at the wedding, and I could tell it hurt Charlie but what did he expect? Did he think she would call off the wedding and suddenly come to her senses, telling him she loved him and made a mistake in leaving all those years ago?

I'm leaving for Forks in the morning, and I can be where I cannot worry about things such as paying the bills or making sure Renee will be at her appointments on time. I'm tired of being the mom, when she's, my mom. So hey, maybe this whole new marriage thing is going to work out for the both of us.

Anyway, I need to get some sleep. I got to make sure to wake up before Renee or else she'll forget to take me to the airport. – Bella

Bella sighed as she ran her fingers against the purple ink handwriting, knowing she shouldn't be surprised. It was odd though; she had written this right when she forgot everything for the next three months. She had written this, it was right here in front of her, and it was weird. She didn't like how she forgot three months' worth of memories.

"Bella?"

Bella turned around from where she had been standing, looking down at her diary, only to see Charlie standing in the doorway. He didn't look too long at his daughter, but he did look at her enough to let her know he was nervous. He didn't imagine he would have something like this happen, not only have his daughter throw a dramatic ass tantrum because her boyfriend broke up with her, but also because of her injuries she had received from falling those three flights of stairs at that hotel Edward and Dr. Cullen were staying at.

"Hey, Dad, I was just trying to—"

Bella sighed, irritation appearing in her voice suddenly. Tears began to rise in her tear ducts and without thinking she sat down on her bed and began to cry. She felt so robbed, why did she have to lose her memory? She had wanted to come to spend time with Charlie, and yet in the end she would end up losing those three months, where they had bonded. She would have to start all over again, when it came to their relationship. All that progression, gone.

"I think it would be best if you go back to school next week. I know it's overwhelming," Charlie confessed, earning a nod from his daughter as she reached over to the tissue box that was sitting on one of her nightstands. She held her tissue afterwards for a moment before she stood up and went into the bathroom, chucking the tissue into the trashcan a moment later.

Coming back into the bedroom, Bella noted how Charlie had shut her diary closed, in order to make sure she would still have privacy. She didn't want to imagine what he would think about that entry, and how he never got over his ex-wife. It would have made things a lot more awkward between Bella and Charlie.

"I was thinking about ordering us some hamburgers from The Lodge, for dinner," Charlie informed her, earning a nod from Bella before he got up from his spot on the bed. She watched him quietly as he left the room, cracking the door so it was almost completely shut but not all the way.

Sighing, Bella leant back against the bedspread, her eyes looking up at the peaked ceiling above her. She couldn't help but wonder who she had made friends with, she also wondered what this Edward Cullen looked like. She had never been boy crazy, never finding a reason why one must always have a significant other in their lives.

Closing her eyes, Bella tried to take a nap, until it was time for dinner. She ended up having insomnia later in the night, after eating her hamburger awkwardly at the kitchen table. She woke up and was tempted to read her diary in the middle of the night, wishing she could read all three months' worth of entries in one night, but she promised herself she wouldn't over stress her mind and make her head hurt even more.

By the time the weekend came, Bella slowly found herself adjusting to the daily routine of living with Charlie. It was nicer than she expected, though sometimes he would have guilt consume his brown eyes. It was obvious he was struggling with her being here, especially with what had happened not even a week ago. She knew if she tried to tell him she was fine, and she was okay with staying here for the rest of the school year, he would only think she was trying not to make him feel guilty.

The only thing she didn't appreciate was the cards she would receive from both the high school staff and the police station, telling her they were happy she was okay. It made her embarrassed, how they were treating her injury as tough it was worth mentioning. She had a tantrum and thought she should go back to Phoenix only because she had broken up with her boyfriend. Said boyfriend claimed he would get back together with her, but when he learnt she wouldn't regain her memories most likely he decided to leave her completely.

She was sitting on the front porch swing, on Sunday, peering at the rusty Chevy truck sitting in the front yard. Apparently, it was a welcome home present, Charlie had bought it from his best friend, Billy Black, (he lived on the La Push Reservation). He couldn't drive the truck anymore because his diabetes disability ended up putting him into a wheelchair. He had given it to Charlie when he learnt Bella would be coming back to Forks for the last two years of high school.

She had brought her diary out, eager to read the entry of how her first day of school here in Forks was. She wanted to be prepared for the next day, to at least know the names of those who she decided to become friends with. She opened it.

January 17th, 2005

My first day at Forks High was interesting. In the beginning, it wasn't interesting. I ran into a brunette girl outside of my first class of the day, English. Her name was Jessica Stanley, she invited me to sit with her and her friends at the lunch table during lunch. Her other friend, a girl with hair the color of corn, Lauren Mallory, was a bitch. I kind of expected something like this to happen, after all I must admit I'm a walking cliché.

A boy came up to me after English. He was gangly, with skin problems and oil black hair. He told me his name was Eric Yorkie, and he wanted a picture of me for the front page of the school article. It was mortifying, the last thing I want is to have unwanted attention on me. Then he wanted to walk me to my next class, Government, but I managed to tell him I had a map. He got the message quick.

Trig was a nightmare. I tripped on the way to my desk, after Mr. Varner forced me to introduce myself to the class. I wanted nothing more than cover my face with my hoodie and put my head down onto the desk, in order to not look at everyone around me.

Jessica ended up sharing Spanish with me. Mrs. Goff managed to keep Jessica from talking to me too much. I'm not that great at Spanish either, so it would help me not to have this girl talking my ear off.

I met the rest of Jessica's friends when we got to the cafeteria.

Mike Newton, he's the typical peppy guy, one who always wants to be the center of attention. Apparently, his parents own an outfitter's store: Newtons' Olympic Outfitters. He's on the football team, and Jessica has a huge crush on him. He doesn't pay her an ounce of attention; he's decided his attention should be on me. Too bad he's not brain smarts, then again, no matter how high his IQ is I'm sure he'll not let up his flirtations.

Angela Weber is the Methodist preacher's daughter. She's quiet, reserved, but she seems as though she'd be the perfect friend. She knows personal boundaries and she managed to keep Eric from asking me again for a picture of me for the newspaper. She even got him to agree to not write an article about me.

I was expecting for everything to be like in Phoenix, only a little more attention focused on me than I want. I hadn't expected for there to be the Cullens though, the moment I saw them, I knew there was something off about them. They would make life here more interesting.

The Cullens' backstory is strange. Dr. Cullen and his wife are in their late twenties or early thirties and have five teenagers. Two of the seniors are twins, they are Mrs. Cullen's niece and nephew. They adopted them when they were eight, since their parents had died in a car accident. The other three were foster children. They moved down here from Alaska two years ago.

One of the twins entered the cafeteria first with the other remaining senior. Her name was Rosalie Hale. She had a beautiful figure, was very tall, and golden wavy hair. She had golden eyes, and she was quite sour looking despite looking as though she was Aphrodite herself deciding to walk among the mortals.

The guy that walked in with her, was Emmett Cullen, he was a senior just like the twins were. He had a big, weightlifter vibe about him with dark curly hair. He was carrying a bag of boiled eggs despite the fact he wouldn't eat them in the end, in fact none of the Cullens would be eating.

Next came the other girl in the family, Alice Cullen. She was extremely short and skinny, borderline anorexic, with how thin she was. She had deep and dark cropped short hair that pointed in every direction.

The boy that was next to her was holding her hand, his name was Jasper Hale. He had canary curls that fell to his shoulders, and he looked as though he was in pain. It was weird, I felt bad for him, but I didn't look at him that long.

Rosalie and Emmett were dating. Alice and Jasper were dating too. Apparently, it was taboo, but they weren't blood related so what was wrong with it?

The last boy that came in was Edward.

Before she could continue reading, Bella was interrupted by her name being called. She looked up, noticing how Jacob Black was driving a truck up to her house, with his dad, Billy Black, sitting in the passenger seat. Both were beaming brightly at her, their deep red skin and dark hair reminding her of all the times she would go over to the Reservation and spend time with Jacob and his twin sisters growing up.

"Bella! I'm glad you're back!"

Bella stood up from her swing, as Jacob jumped out of the truck and waved warmly at her. She gave a nervous smile back at him, as he went around the truck and pulled Billy's wheelchair from the bed of the truck. He helped Billy out of the truck and into the wheelchair before Jacob pushed them towards the front porch.

"Bella, it's good to see you," Billy greeted her as she went down the front steps to him.

She could see his strong cheekbones, his features were striking, his brown eyes dark enough to be black and hair that draped over his brown leather jacket—there were gray highlights that were throughout the hair. An old hat was on the top of his head, shielding him from the sunlight that peeked through the clouds.

"It's good to see you too, Billy."

Behind her the front door opened, revealing Charlie. As Charlie went to bring Billy into the house, Bella awkwardly fidgeted. Jacob cleared his throat, gaining her attention, "do you want to sit out here? I can tell it's kind of overwhelming."

Bella nodded her head, before they went over to the porch swing. Bella sighed as she sat down, closing her purple diary. Jacob glanced at it as he sat down, he looked as though he was a junior like her instead of a freshman in high school. He was very tall for his age and was gaining quite a good bit of muscle. His black hair was pulled into a low ponytail, away from his face, and showing his matured face. The baby fat was gone, it was as though Jacob was a completely new person.

"Sorry, I was just reading my diary, seeing if I could get any idea of how it was like for me when I was here," Bella admitted as she looked down at the purple diary again. She was intrigued to read more about this Edward, but the Blacks arriving suddenly and stopping her from reading more about him was kind of weird.

"I can't believe your boyfriend just up and left the way he did with his family. Kind of makes me wonder if Dad was right about them after all," Jacob confessed, making her furl her eyebrows at him. He shook his head, "don't worry about it, Bells. You don't have to worry about stupid boys anymore. I'll make sure to keep them away."

Bella gave out a little chuckle before she shook her head, "thanks but no thanks, Jake. I don't think I'd want to go on a date with anyone, anytime soon. I'm just fine being by myself right now, anyway."

Bella swore she could see disappointment in those brown eyes of her friend, as though he hoped she would say she would go on a date with him to keep these boys away, but she pushed it away. She didn't need to make herself think of things like this, she didn't feel that way towards Jacob. He was too much of a brother for her, she liked their relationship as it was. Besides, she knew it would be unfair for Jacob, she wouldn't feel the same as he did for her.

Bella ended up putting her diary away in the drawer of her desk she had found it in, when she had gone upstairs to wash her hands for dinner. She almost wanted to take a plate of food downstairs before coming back up here and reading her diary while eating her said dinner. She knew it was unhealthy.

Maybe she'd learn why she had this bite mark on her wrist.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: there will be no Bella/Jacob ship here, except for it being one sided-Jacob. I thought it would be smart if she had a diary, and she wrote down all that had happened when she was in Forks. Alice would know Bella wouldn't be able to say something about them being vampires when she reads about finding out about them, because of her state of mind.
