Chapter Eight

Months passed, but Bella hadn't gotten any more visions within her sleep, visiting Volterra so she could see King Marcus and the rest of the Volturi. She didn't know how to feel about it. She almost imagined it was a figment of her imagination. She would look through her jewelry box and find the necklace nestled along with the rest of the jewelry. It would cement her decision each time into going over to another country entirely and meet vampire royalty. Especially if it meant she would end up meeting her mate, who happened to be a part of the kings' royal guard.

In early March, Bella was startled awake from her sleep one night by her window being opened. She sat upright, her eyes landing on a big figure on the other side of her bedroom window. Her heart raced in her chest, as she feared that some rogue vampire had learnt of her existence and decided they would do away with her.

Instead, she was welcomed with the window opening, and Jacob coming through the slim window. Her eyes widened as she scooted backwards against her headboard, memories of that vampire attacking her at the Cullen house appearing again. It also brought along the wolf that shared the same exact shade of eyes as him.

"J-Jacob, what are you doing here?" Bella hissed, fear and anger mixing together.

Fear because she didn't know the connection between Jacob and the wolf that shared his eyes. Anger because Jacob decided he would break into her bedroom through her window. It wasn't a pretty concoction, nor was the mixture of anger and fear ever something that went well together. It always led to hysteria, misunderstandings, even death in some cases.

"Sorry," Jacob grumbled, his tall figure and muscular mass reminding Bella how Jacob had changed more than she had expected when she came back. His hair fell around him in a disarray, a few pieces falling in front of his eyes.

"Sorry doesn't account for the fact that you had broken into my bedroom! Why are you here? Couldn't you have waited until tomorrow?" Bella probed, making sure her voice was low enough to not disrupt Charlie from his sleeping.

Jacob rubbed the back of his neck as he looked around the room. He didn't want to look at Bella, she was so tiny and vulnerable in her bed. She was so beautiful, so fragile, and needed to be protected. He needed to tell her what he was, no he didn't need to tell her. He needed to show her, since he could do it without words.

"I-I need to show you something, can we go out to the woods in the back?" Jacob probed, making Bella frown and almost turn her head to the side in confusion. What was he going on about? Why was he asking her to go to the woods in the back so he could show her something?

Bella shook her head. "No, I'm sorry, Jacob but I'm not going outside with you."

Jacob's eyes darkened in impatience as he put his hand onto her dresser behind her. Her eyes widened when his hand tightened against the dresser, it began to groan underneath the strength of his hand. She hurriedly got out of bed, "okay, okay, Jacob. Let's go out to the backyard. You can show me what it is that you want to show me. You don't need to destroy my dresser."

Jacob let his eyes go to the dresser and he gave her a sheepish smile. His body, which was starting to shake in anger, began to dissipate. He didn't need to show Bella his anger or his strength. She would do what he had asked her to do without him having to get angrier. He wasn't going to end up like Sam Uley, when he had ended up scarring his fiancée across her face when he had Phased in anger. He was going to prove he would treat her better than the other men in the pack, he would never hurt Bella–no matter what would happen.

Bella hurriedly rushed out of her bedroom and down the hallway to the staircase. She didn't look back at Jacob, she didn't want to know what else he was capable of. She just wanted to get through these remaining months of her senior year before heading off to Italy and meet her mate. She didn't want to see how Jacob's head brushed against the ceiling of the upstairs hallway, or how his feet were coated in mud and twigs that were now scattered across the wooden floorboards.

They reached the backyard before long, and Bella had barely gotten a good way into the backyard before she saw Jacob pulling the top of his shirt off, revealing his auburn hued skin with thick muscles. She snapped her head down, her eyes going to the grass. She didn't see why Jacob pulling off his shirt was helping anything, it was only the first few hours of the morning, the moonlight was strong enough for her to see what was in front of her thankfully (or maybe not, she never wanted to see Jacob Black naked. Never! She didn't know why he was doing this!)

"You don't have to be shy with me, Bella. You can look up."

Bella shook her head rapidly, "no. No thank you."

Footsteps came to her, slightly muffled before she could feel the heat that was coming from him. It was suffocating, nothing she had ever felt before. She knew vampires were cold, their skin was of dry ice in many ways. This though, she wasn't accustomed to the stifling heat that was coming from Jacob's skin, as though he was an island and there was lava that was barely underneath the surface–ready to come through and incinerate her.

A hand came out and placed itself underneath her chin, enough that she went to take a step backwards. "I said no, Jacob. I don't know what you are thinking, or what you are doing, but I don't like you like that. You're just like a brother to me."

"I'm not asking much from you, Bella. Look. At. Me."

There was a rumble from his chest, and Bella let her eyes wander up, seeing how Jacob gave her a warm smile again, "see, there's nothing wrong with this. I'm almost done."

Jacob took a few steps away from Bella and without thinking she spun on her heels and began to run to the back door of the house that led into the kitchen. The next moment she could hear ripping, and then the same wolf she had seen at the Cullen house was in front of her, growling at her in warning. She stepped backwards a good bit before flinching and falling backwards, screaming when she felt her ankle bone break underneath her.

She reached her hand up and covered her mouth, to keep the scream from rising out of her mouth even more. She narrowed her eyes at Jacob, anger flickering beneath her brown irises to let him know she was not pleased with the fact he had just indirectly caused her to break her ankle bone. If he hadn't done what he had just done then she would be fine, she would be in her bed asleep and without having to deal with the knowledge her childhood best friend just turned into a wolf.

Jacob whined and began to come forward to her, enough for Bella to scramble backwards some more, despite the fact her ankle bone was broken. "Stay away from me, Jacob."

Jacob dismissed her and moved forward again, so that he could reach her. She couldn't help but cry out, "Dad!" Jacob growled at her, as though she had just done a terrible thing, something he wouldn't forgive her for.

The back door of the house was thrown open, showing Charlie coming into the backyard with his hunting rifle in his hands. He didn't hesitate to pull the trigger, hitting Jacob into the side. Jacob howled and snapped his head towards Charlie–sending him a loud growl to him, as though to let him know he wasn't going to forget this.

"Get the fuck away from my daughter!" Charlie roared, before he cocked his gun again, ready for a second round.

Jacob rushed away, blood was cascading down onto the dead grass, allowing both Bella and Charlie to know he was injured. Bella didn't care if it was nastier than it looked, all she cared about was going to the clinic and having her ankle bone reset before having a brace upon it to make sure it would heal correctly.

Charlie sat the gun down when he turned the safety back on. He crouched down, reaching his hand out and putting it onto one of her hands. "Are you okay, Bells? Did he hurt you?"

Bella shook her head, as she almost wanted to tell him that Jacob wasn't human. He was a wolf-shifter, the stories she had learnt when she was little from Sarah Black about the ancestors being able to change into wolves to protect their tribe was true. She knew he would tell her she was just upset and that it wasn't true. She was just jumping to conclusions.

Bella zoned out as Charlie scooped her up in his arms once he realized she had her ankle bone broken. He hurried her to his cruiser and sat her in the passenger seat before he got into the cruiser and drove them to the clinic. She knew they were a sight to see, since they were both wearing pajamas (Charlie had hurriedly put his hunting gun into the house so that no one would come across the rifle and decide to add it to their hunting rifle collection).

When they arrived at the clinic she blushed when Charlie carried her into the lobby of the clinic, which ended up gaining the attention of the receptionist. Bella didn't pay attention to the woman, who ended up getting up from her spot behind the receptionist desk. It was obvious that Bella was a priority since she was the chief-of-police's daughter.

"Chief! What's wrong? Tell me!" the receptionist demanded, her eyes scanning over Bella to make sure that there wasn't anything worse that was happening to her. Bella didn't look at the concerned nurse that long, in fact she didn't want to look at any of the doctors or nurses.

Taken to one of the X-Ray rooms, Bella flinched when they X-Rayed her ankle so they could see how bad her ankle was. She hoped it wouldn't take a numerous number of months for her ankle to heal, and she wouldn't end up having to walk funny in Volterra, especially when she knew she would be in the presence of vampire royalty.

The doctor who came into the room had kind features; he was nearing retirement. She didn't pay attention to what he was saying, only speaking when he addressed her. He would keep glancing over at her, as though he was afraid, she was going to have her memories come back from when she had come to the E.R. after Tyler Cowley almost killed her with his van—and Edward came and swooped over with his vampiric speed to save her.

She only paid attention when he told her to take a deep breath. Charlie took one of her hands in his, before Bella took a deep breath. She fought the urge to scream as the doctor reset her ankle bone. Tears were flowing down her cheekbones, and she swore she would never allow herself to be in the situation she had been in with Jacob.

She already dealt with vampires in the past, they didn't protect her. The bite mark on her wrist was evidence they didn't protect her. Jacob protected her to an extent, he was there to chase after that vampire but when she had told him she didn't want him in her house anymore he had almost broken her dresser. He should have respected her wanting him to leave, but he decided the best way to protect her was overwhelming her by shifting into a wolf.

So, in a way he didn't protect her, she didn't feel protected by him. She feared him, he was pushing himself towards her and she just wanted to curl up and away from him. He only left when Charlie had gotten his hunting rifle and shot him. Charlie was the one who properly protected Bella, not Jacob. Jacob was not protecting her; he was pushing himself upon her and she ended up breaking her ankle bone because he wouldn't stop.

"I'll be telling the other officers at the station about the wolves. I suggest you tell your patients about them. We haven't been having any of them leaving the woods. This is the first time a wolf has attacked one of the townspeople, but we shouldn't just think it will be one case. We need to prepare ourselves for future cases."

Bella ducked her head down, as she tried not to imagine the uproar that would happen between the natives and the townspeople. She wondered how the tribe would react to Jacob exposing himself to Bella, in more ways than one. It was okay if he stripped himself in front of her, since he wasn't going to expose himself as a wolf. It was another thing if he decided in the end, he would end up transforming into his wolf form. It was crazy, it was something that she wished she was naive about.

So, she didn't speak up. She knew there was no point in doing so.

Charlie often scoffed at people who believed these legends were real. He thought they were just stories that had been passed down throughout the generations of the tribespeople. He wasn't trying to be rude or basically stick a middle finger up to the legends and myths of the Quileute people. He just didn't see a reason why someone should believe they were real now, in the twenty-first century.

To say the least when Bella arrived at the high school with a brace on her right foot. She had just gotten the cast off one of her legs and now she had a cast on her right foot. She still had those crutches but at least the high school wasn't meant for more than one floor buildings. She didn't have to find a creaky old elevator that not many people used and have one of the teachers next to her so they would make sure Bella would get off on the right floor.

Angela was always next to her, but never spoke unless she could see that Bella was getting a little lonely. Jessica would be too excited to do things for Bella, she had tried even harder after Bella had gone to the Britney Spears Concert. It only made Bella feel worse, on how Jessica had been judging and sometimes rude to her before she lost her memories, and then when Bella came back to the high school Jessica changed her personality because the Cullens weren't there.

Jessica desperately tried so hard to keep her friendship with Bella, since it was obvious it was deteriorating. Bella would give her smiles, but they wouldn't reach her eyes. She smiled more when she would be in the presence of Angela. So, Jessica had ended up deciding she would have some time with Bella, doing something Bella hadn't expected.

"Come on, Bella!" Jessica smiled brightly as she stood at one of the lower cliff edges of the cliff that looked out to the La Push Ocean Park beach. Bella gulped, not knowing how to feel about the whole having to jump off of a cliff with Jessica.

"Um…no thanks, I'm good!" Bella cried back, only for Jessica to look at someone over Bella's shoulder. She gave them a nod and Bella froze, as though she was realizing why Jessica had just nodded her head.

Bella turned her head, noticing how one of the native boys was grinning and he rushed forward to grab Bella's arm to jump off the cliff with her. Her blood froze, as tears began to rise in her tear ducts. She still had this damn brace around her foot. Why the hell would she want to go cliff diving with Jessica? Jessica said they were going to the movies but ended up leading Bella to the cliff.

"Jessica, why are you doing this?" Bella probed, once she had made sure the large native would fall over the cliff–he would end up doing a cannonball or something that would be easy.

"I learnt that you have a diary, which says that I'm basically a two-faced bitch when you first moved here. I found it and read it…when I was hanging at your house, and you were in the bathroom. I just…I had to read what you thought about me…" Jessica ducked her head down, pieces of her hair falling down in front of her face. There were tears that were appearing from her blue eyes.

"That doesn't mean you had to take me here. You could have confronted me about it when we were at my house. Of course there's no excuse for you reading my diary," Bella pointed out, pausing a moment when her eyes widened a moment later. "How far did you read into the diary?"

"I only read the parts that had my name mentioned. I didn't read anything else…I already felt bad enough about reading your diary. I didn't want to push it even more," Jessica responded, her eyebrows furling when she looked at the other brunette. "What? Did you write about your sex life? Or about your first time and you're embarrassed about it?"

It shouldn't surprise Bella the first thing Jessica had thought was Bella trying to hide her sex life with Edward Cullen. There was no sex life between her and Edward. Edward was afraid to get too close to her, and they only made out like two times in her diary. Mostly he would sit on her bed and read one of her books from her bookshelves when she would be sleeping. She slept next to him, she didn't sleep with him (romantic or platonic).

"Drive me home, Jess. I hope you know that I think it'd be best if we aren't friends anymore," Bella softly said. Jessica opened her mouth for a moment, as though she was going to try and persuade Bella into still being her friend.

Jessica had barely nodded her head when one of the guys rushed forward and bumped into her when he decided he would jump off the cliff. Bella stumbled backwards and before long she fell off the cliff, my eyes widening and the wind rustling her hair. She couldn't find a reason to scream, she could only remind herself this was as much her own fault as it was Jessica's.

Jessica could have been standing on the side of the cliff trying to jump off the cliff with Bella as though this was some best friend bucket list. Bella could have just been standing by the car and not on the side of the cliff face. No, she had to let her guard down, and something like this was happening.

The moment she hit the water; Bella closed her eyes for a moment. She felt her casted foot drag her downwards, the weight being what would keep her from going up to the surface. She opened her eyes eventually, noticing there was something crimson that was coming towards her. She frowned and craned her head to the side, noticing as it came closer there was also a paleness to the crimson.

She barely saw this strange possible hallucination when a pair of arms wrapped around Bella, before pulling her towards the surface of the water. She noticed how the bare skinned arms that were around her were hot, which in return reminded her of how she ended up getting the stupid brace on her ankle.

One moment she was being pulled out of the water and the next moment she was on the dark pebbled man-made beach. It might be a warmer day, being the only saving grace, for a weekend in March. It was warm enough for Jessica to be wearing a pair of shorts and a quarter length shirt and flip flops. Bella on the other hand was wearing one of her dresses where she could put the dress on by just pulling it over her head, along with one pair of tennis shoes.

When she glanced down, she almost laughed at how that tennis shoe was floating out there in the water. Her sock went with it, revealing an awkward bare foot that was having some pebbles spread across the foot. She was also still in the arms of her savior, which now that she looked up, she saw that Jacob was the one who was above her.

Without thinking Bella scrambled away from him, Jacob reached his hand out to touch her, but she hissed out, "don't." He dropped his hand down, though she could tell he had grabbed some of the pebbles on the shore and squeezed them into a fine powder.

"Will you stop that, Bella?" Jacob hissed as his jaw clenched, he closed his eyes. He took a deep breath, there was steam that seemed to come off of him because of the internal heat he had. Seems that supernatural creatures run either extremely hot or extremely cold.

Funny, how she preferred the type of supernatural creature that ran extremely cold. She preferred crimson or golden irises. She did not want to have the skin and temper both to run hot. She wanted that castle, she wanted to wander throughout Volterra Castle and read those books that they must have collected throughout the centuries. She wanted her Volturi Guard, she wanted what was destined for her, she felt no need to rebel and be there with Jacob.

"I can't be with you, Jacob. I'm also not going to say sorry that you ended up getting that scar either from Charlie," Bella remarked, as her eyes went to scar on the side of his ribs.

She instead had pride that radiated from her, at how Charlie didn't even hesitate to take care of Jacob for her. She let her eyes wander away from looking at the scar and peered up at Jacob. His hands shook together, and for a moment she thought he was going to Phase because of the fact that she had told him she couldn't be with him.

Instead, she looked over his shoulder and froze when she saw a head bobbing in the waters with a cruel smile upon her lips. Long auburn hair, which reminded her of fire, flared out around her. Despite her waves of hair being wet they were still quite large. Her crimson eyes were peering directly at her, letting Bella know this must have been one of the nomadic vampires that were there at the baseball game with James. She was probably James's mate; from the scorching glare she was giving both the wolf-shifter along with the human.

"Vampire," Bella breathed aloud, not even tearing her attention away from the vampire. If she did, she would have seen Jacob shifting into his wolf-form and howling, alerting others on the Reservation there was a vampire here and it wasn't any of the Cullens.

Bella sat there, as the red-haired vampire slowly went back into the water, her crimson eyes peering at her longingly before she went all the way underneath the water again. She was safe in the waters; she wasn't on land. It was a taunting tactic for the Reservation. The vampire was both on and not on their land in supernatural terms.

She was only pulled away from peering out at the water when honking from the car made Bella turn her head. Jessica was hurriedly getting out of her car before she was rushing onto the shoreline. Bella knew she wouldn't be able to be friends with Jessica anymore. She had just done something that Bella would not have forgiven her. She could have died on impact if she had hit the water. If the other natives weren't there she would have died and even Jessica could have been injured a good bit.

That night it took some time for Bella to feel safe enough to sleep. Every now and then she would wake up, remembering how she had been welcomed with one of the vampires who had attacked her at the baseball game, and went to the windows to see if she would see that red haired vampire again. Though she had seen her before, long ago, this time Bella was seeing her for the first time properly. She was obviously seeing more than the Bella from last year saw.

Bella only had two more months before she would graduate high school. Then she would be away from all of this, and hopefully she would never see that vampire again.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: I'm not anti-Jessica. I love Jessica but this just seemed to make sense. Jessica seems like the kind of girl that would read her friend's diary to see how she thinks about her. I know that I'm not updating as much as I am with 'Petit Papillon' but that's because of the fact that I've just been more in the mood to write on the other fanfiction. Bella will meet Alec in Chapter 14. Jane and Edward end up meeting each other in Chapter 17.

I am working on both fanfictions. I must ask those who are also reading 'Petit Papillon', would you like to read a fanfiction where Bella is adopted by her vampire godmother, and they learn her godmother is Carlisle's mate (lol Sylvia and Carlisle are making me depressed with their sad love backstory). The fanfiction would be called 'Lovely Creatures' and her godmother would be a Chinese nurse who used to be a natural healer and has the ability to heal people. She's a Christian. Bella on the other hand...who do you think she should be with?

Here are the ships: Jasper, Demetri, and obviously Alec (love him even when he's a little sulky 12-year-old, though I don't ship him with anyone at his cannon age. Remember middle school? At least Aro doesn't make Jane and Alec go to some private middle school. Jane would probably murder everyone, and Alec would be in the corner of the room sobbing and asking to go home.)

anyway, Twilight doesn't belong to me
