"Okay Sof, we need to do some card making before you come back, so you can take it for Mamma for Mother's Day and her birthday. Then we need Grandma Robbin's mother's day and Abdula Torres for his birthday." Arizona listed. She only had Sofia for a few days so it was important to spend a few hours crafting. After all she was the organised one in the relationship, Callie was more of a last minute panic buyer, Arizona would start Christmas shopping in January.
"Then we can go shopping and pick some presents out, so get your thinking cap on" Arizona instructed checking the calendar one more time making sure she hadn't missed anything. There was her birthday there, but she didn't celebrate that, why would she? Getting another year older alone, it was hardly special. She knew nobody was expecting an expensive present from the 7-year-old but didn't want Sofia saving her pocket money to buy something. Hopefully Callie would remember her birthday and get Sof to make a card or something. Arizona didn't mind as long as she got to speak to her daughter that day.
Sofia was due back in 3 months once she returned from this holiday. It was going to be a long time. It was something that Daniel Robbins had done before each deployment checked the calendar, listed all important events that needed a card and corralled the children into making the cards before taking them out to buy the presents. Then on the day all it took was a phone call to remind them to get the wrapped present out of the closet.
She opened her craft cupboard pulling out the paints, the glue, the glitter and the card. Sofia began with the birthday card. At 7 years old her art skills had improved significantly since their last craft day causing Arizona to feel a pang in her heart. Her little girl was growing up without her. Once the front adorned with balloons and a drawing of a cake was finished Arizona helped with the inside, writing
To Mamma
Happy Birthday
I love you lots and lots
Sofia
On a scrap piece of paper Sofia could copy it into the card. Her writing was advanced for her age but her spellings were awful. Once done it was placed carefully on the side to dry. She did the same for Abdula's birthday, this time Sofia drew a beach, a sun and balloons with a brown haired haired girl and man holding hands. Arizona knew he wouldn't mind getting 2 hand drawn cards if Callie did the same.
Next she started Barbara Robbin's mother's day card, drawing herself, with brown hair Arizona and Barbara using the yellow pen for hair and giving them both huge blue eyes, together all waving big red smiles.
"Ok goose, Mother's Day now" Arizona instructed, Sofia took a pink piece of card this time, drawing hearts, flowers and then herself and Callie waving on the front.
Arizona sat watching drinking her coffee when her phone rang. It was the hospital. Sighing she stood,
"Sof, I need to take this" she apologised,
"It's okay Mommy" Sofia said fully engrossed in her drawing, her tongue poking out between her lips, concentration on her face. She looked so much like Callie, Arizona gave a fond smile, she missed them so much. Still, they were happy, that is what mattered, as long as they were happy, she could carry on with life.
The phone call took a lot longer than expected. Trying to persuade an intern that his patient's scan didn't require urgent surgery and that she could wait until scheduled on Monday when Sofia returned. That the slight rise in blood pressure was still under the threshold for surgery and actually the extra few days of steroids improved the baby's chances of survival. It didn't help when the intern passed her on to his attending who had the same view. Arizona was exhausted arguing with people, she was the fetal specialist, and her success rate was one of the highest in the country but all they saw was a newcomer, who'd completed a fellowship far to quickly in their minds to know what she was doing.
She returner to the crafts table, to find Callie's card finished, Sofia was now working on a new card. On the front 3 figures, 2 with brown hair, one with orange. There was only one person it could be. Penny! Arizona closed her eyes fighting the tears that threatened to fall, plastering the largest smile she could on her face. Sofia was happy, Callie was happy, Penny makes them happy, I made them sad, you are happy they are happy. She recited her mantra.
"What are you making now, Sof?" she asked, hoping her daughter couldn't detect the falseness of her happy tone.
"A mother's day card for Penny, I didn't want her to feel left out" Sofia explained,
"That's really thoughtful Sofia" Arizona said, wanting to scream and shout, she was her mother, Callie was her mother, Penny was Callie's girlfriend, she wasn't her mother. Still Penny had been there more than she had recently, it was Penny who tucked her into bed, it was Penny who helped with her homework, who cooked her dinner, who kissed her boo boos better. Penny was there for her it was no wonder Sofia considered her a mother figure. Arizona bit her lip, trying not to cry in front of her daughter. Penny was a good person, she should be proud Sofia was so thoughtful.
"Can you help me write?" Sofia finished opening the card,
"Sure, what do you want to say?" Arizona swallowed her throat was now dry, her hands shaking. She was jealous. Jealous that Penny had everything she ever wanted, Sofia and Callie. Still. she was the good man in the storm, she would suffer every day if it meant they were happy. Its what she had been doing.
"Dear Penny, Happy Mother's day, Love Sofia" Sofia recited. Arizona wrote it onto card watching her daughter copy it across.
"Okay Sofia, lets get you bathed get the glitter off and go shopping" Arizona ordered. "I've put a dress out on your bed. We have an appointment to take some photos for Grandma and Grandpa" she told her. Barbara had been nagging her for more photos of her granddaughter non-stop since Sofia had moved, even though Arizona forwarded every photo Callie sent to her.
While Sofia showered Arizona cleaned up the craft supplies and vacuumed the excess glitter, before changing herself.
Arriving at the mall they headed straight to the photo studio.
"Can we do photos for Mamma too?" Sofia asked looking at the sample shoots. Arizona nodded, Callie would love it.
"Of course." Arizona said, they had an hour slot. The first half an hour was photos of Sofia, they had a whole props cupboard, flowers, Princess dresses, bubbles and different lightening. Then came the duo shots, making love hearts with their hands, lying down their faces touching, Sofia lying on top of Arizona and matching hair and flower crowns. Both girls had lots of fun and laughter was heard outside the store.
After came time to try and select the photos, they had packages that came with mugs, key chains and frames. Arizona decided to order 3, one for herself, one for Callie, one set for Abdula as part of his birthday present and one for her mother. Meaning they had to pick 10 photos, for each set
"Sof, can you pick 10 for Mamma" Arizona asked distracted by trying to pick 10 for herself, 10 for Carlos and 10 for her mother.
Sofia nodded, the photographer writing down her selections. She chose the one with her alone and lots of bubbles, one with her lying in a field of fake flowers, one with her dressed as a Princess. Then 7 with her and mommy together. She liked how happy her mommy looked and wanted photos with her in New York of her mommy.
"Did you choose?" Arizona asked, having picked her 10, choosing the same 10 for herself and her mom and 10 of Sofia for Carlos, after all there was no way he'd want photos of his daughter's ex-wife everywhere. Sofia nodded.
The photographer nodded his agreement, the little girl had been much quicker deciding what photo she wanted on the mug, and the keychain and framed. Even picking an extra keychain for herself, they way she could see Mommy whenever she felt sad.
Arizona handed over her card paying for everything. The photographer promising to send her the order in the next week. Plenty of time before the special days.
"Now Mamma's birthday" Arizona instructed. They headed to the jewellery store, Sofia selecting a charm bracelet, choosing several charms, first was a heart with a smaller heart in each held a birthstone. They chose Sofia's and Callie's, to put in, next was a charm with a bone hanging off, and a stethoscope, next was a rainbow. Lastly Sofia chose with Arizona's urging a New York charm with the statue of liberty, a green apple and a yellow taxi. After all New York was Callie's future, her happiness.
"Mommy you should have one, for your birthday, again Arizona had the stethoscope, and a baby, representing both the one she lost and the ones she now worked to save. Unlike Callie's heart Arizona chose one with 3 charms hanging off one for her birth month, one for Sofia's and one for Callie. No matter what Callie thought Arizona was grateful to her for giving her Sofia. She found an angel wing that made her think of Tim, Mark, Nick and her unborn baby picking that. She also got the rainbow, after all that was a large part of her life. She was going to stick with 5 charms when Sofia giggled, pointing at the case.
"Mommy a shoe, just one, like you," Arizona smiled, putting the shoe on too. Her mind racing, as she remembered her time in the woods, Cristina screaming for her shoe. Then losing her leg, the anger she had felt, the affair. She didn't want to remember but felt she had too, she didn't want to make the same mistake again.
"And you for being so special, I think we should get you one." Arizona decided watching as her daughter looked longingly at the charms. She was rewarded with her daughter's face lighting up. Sofia had the same heart charm as Arizona with the 4 birth months hanging off, as she added Mark's, wanting Sofia to remember her daddy too. She also got the bone charm representing Mamma and a bright blue one representing Mommy, it was the same colour as Arizona's eyes. She too got a rainbow, like both of her mommies. Next to those was an angel wing,
"For daddy, and Aunt Lexie" Sofia told her solemnly.
Lastly for Sofia she chose a rabbit, for no other reason than they were cute and a purple charm because that was her favourite colour. Arizona smiled, she loved blue, Callie red, so their daughter loving purple just fit. A perfect blend of them both.
Arizona paid up not even looking at how much that cost. It didn't matter, the shop gift wrapped Callie's bracelet Arizona and Sofia wearing theirs now.
Lastly was a present for Grandpa's birthday, Arizona had already got him the photo set, but wanted Sofia to pick out something herself. After lots of looking around Sofia chose a matching hat and scarf set, made of soft wool. With presents brought they exhausted pair stopped for coffee, a milkshake and doughnuts before heading home.
Once at home Arizona wrapped the presents, they had brought,
"I'll send the card and presents before Mother's Day" she promised,
"You can't, Mamma will see" Sofia cried aghast. Arizona sighed,
"Let me talk to Mrs Graham" she said referring to Sofia babysitter, maybe she would accept the delivery and smuggle the presents to Sofia. She got out her phone texting the babysitter who agreed with their plan.
The photos came a week later, all wrapped up neatly, labelled, Arizona didn't even check her mothers', Carlos's or Callie's packages not wanting to disturb the nice wrapping instead checking her own. Happy with the high quality she spent the afternoon deciding which photo went in her bedroom, her office, her hallway, her lounge, her kitchen and 2 for her work office. She sent off the parcels one to destined for New York, one to Miami, the other destined for Boston. Mrs Graham promised to give Sofia the presents before each event.
Arizona birthday came first, as normal she got a card and present from her parents. Barbara Robbins had ignored her pleas to not celebrate it ever since she was 22 and Tim had died. A week before her birthday and she knew she'd never feel truly happy again, deciding not to ever celebrate her birthday again. Callie had ignored that, Callie after the disaster of the surprise party had scaled down the birthday celebrations. Instead of a present Callie brought lingerie, or body paint, and they spent her birthday in bed, celebrating in a different way. Since Arizona had loosened her stance towards her birthday.
When her birthday came and passed without a card from Sofia, without so much as a phone call Arizona felt her heart break slightly. She didn't blame Sofia after all she was 7. She tried to call twice to hear her babies voice on her birthday but both times Callie's phone went straight to answerphone, by the time she texted back explaining she had been scrubbed in and asking if everything was okay it was past Sofia's bedtime. Arizona replied everything was fine, refusing April's offer to out for drinks instead going home alone to wallow. How had Callie forgotten her birthday, she didn't expect much but a phone call from her daughter, was that to much to ask?
Mother's Day was a week later. Arizona woke early, surprised she had no post the day previously. She checked her phone, nothing, which considering New York was 4 hours ahead surprised her. She switched on the television searching for distraction, but everything was talking about Mother's Day. This was the first one since Sofia was born alone without her daughter and it was hard. She tried calling Callie only to get answer phone, defeated she hung up, video calling her own mom,
"Happy Mother's Day Mom" Arizona greeted. She could hear hammering in the background.
"Thank you and to you sweetie, I love the photos. They're amazing, Daniel is putting them up now" she said as the phone began moving. Barbara took her around the house showing where she had chosen each photo to go. Arizona's pager interrupted them.
"Sorry mum its 9-11. I love you" Arizona said,
"I'm proud of you," Barbara replied, "I love you too" she elbowed Daniel, who rolled his eyes,
"She knows" he defended, Barbara glared at him,
"I love you, kiddo, be a good man" he said. Arizona hung up running out the house to go to work. On route she tried calling Callie again, only to get the answer phone.
Pulling up outside the hospital she was greeted with Zola, Bailey and Ellis walking past with Amelia and Maggie, holding flowers, handmade drawings and Tequila. She closed her eyes, gathering strength following them in. Amelia spotting her and calling her over.
"Meredith got called in early, so we decided to bring Mother's Day here" she explained, "Maggie made breakfast" Arizona plastered her fake smile,
"That's great, Meredith will love it, sorry excuse me, I had a 9-11 page" she said, escaping. Arriving in the pit she found Bailey and Meredith talking,
"Your patient died, I'm sorry" Bailey explained nodding at trauma 1 where an obviously pregnant women was covered with a sheet, "RTC, we couldn't control the bleeding the crew lost the pulse, by the time she got here she'd been down 20 minutes. Dad died on scene. It's just tragic on Mother's Day to." Bailey checked her watch. "Anyway, I need to go Tuck's at home with breakfast, flowers and my favourite perfume and I need to go and get spoilt"
Meredith smiled,
"Maggie text I'm meeting my family in the Attending's lounge they made breakfast" Meredith told them, noticing Arizona's distraught face. Sympathising with her friend, her daughter was in New York, her first year away.
"What about you? I know Sofia's away" she asked concerned, Arizona shrugged, Meredith concern hitting her harder than she expected. Tears were now escaping, from her eyes, running down her face, and once the damn had been breached, they just kept coming.
"Arizona?" Meredith repeated concerned leading her to the nearest storeroom Bailey following.
"I'm sorry," Arizona apologised furiously wiping away her tears. "I didn't mean to ruin your day, you should go, you have children who need their mom's" Even as she said it, she kept crying.
"Arizona" Bailey interrupted, "What's going on?"
"I got nothing, no card, no phone call, no breakfast. Nothing, even perfect Penny got a card. Sofia made Penny a card because she see's her as a mom but not me" Arizona sobbed feeling stupid and petty but unable to change her feelings.
"Hey, the day is young I'm sure she will call later" Bailey soothed. Arizona shook her head, no, that's what she had told herself on her birthday and it hadn't happened. She'd had a phone call a day later but it wasn't the same. Callie had forgotten, she had been forgotten. Mark was right she was nothing. She had lost another daughter; she rubbed her empty stomach the emotion's of the miscarriage coming out too.
"They didn't call for my birthday, I didn't get a card, and I don't celebrate it, but I didn't get a phone call. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ruin your day, it just hurts that Callie doesn't consider me a mother, I'm a mom, I'm Sofia's mom. I'm not nothing, even Penny got a card, she's Sofia's 2nd mom" Arizona suddenly realised where she was and who she was talking to, Meredith was on Callie's side, Bailey didn't get involved in personal drama, both had more important places to be.
"Arizona" Meredith began. Arizona's pager sounded, another 9-11, she wiped her tears, leaving the room not making eye contact ashamed at her outburst, these were Callie's friends she shouldn't be bad mouthing her to them.
"Grey?" Bailey asked as Meredith whipped out her phone,
"Don't try to stop me, I'm calling her, I'm telling her straight" Meredith ranted.
"I wasn't going to stop you, that girl," Bailey interrupted, "You know Mark called her nothing, the day Sofia was born, I saw her fight for that girl, she got her heart beating and since Sofia has been her heart." Bailey paused. "What I was going to say whoop her ass for me" She left the room.
Meredith dialled Callie's number getting the answer phone not deterred she left a message.
"I was on your side, I was on your side for George, for the custody case, for moving away, but I can't be on your side for this. Callie, she still loves you and I know you've moved on, so does she, but its mother's day. She gave you Sofia, she let you take Sofia, even though it broke her. And she tries to hide it but she smiles less, she works more, goes out less, but today she cried, she actually cried Callie because it was bad enough you forgot her birthday, that Sofia forgot her birthday, but today you forgot Mother's Day. She fought for Sofia; she got her heart beating when nobody else could. She is the reason your daughter is alive and today you forgot that. She isn't nothing Callie, Mark was wrong, she isn't nothing, she is the mother of your child, and she deserves at least a phone call and a glittery handmade card. She loves the handmade glittery cards. The rest of us say thank you, she keeps everyone. And today you broke her Callie, you broke her more than a plane crash, more that the divorce, more than loosing her baby. Today you broke her" Meredith hung up the phone her anger spent. There was nothing more she could do it was up to Callie now. What she could do was find Arizona and invite her to spend Mother's Day with her own children.
She caught up with Arizona who scrubbing into surgery, a pregnant woman whose baby's cord had become twisted, the blood supply cut off, time was now critical to save the child. Not wanting to distract her Meredith went to find April and Bailey, they needed to make a plan to cheer her up.
I wrote this for mother's day which is on Sunday for the UK, I might write more chapters, let me know what you think
