Okay, shorter chapter for you guys today. Barely breaks five thousand words, but I wanted to get something out this week. I have a test that I need to start studying for and I barely have anything done for my other chapter.
Just another slice of life with our trio having fun.
It had been almost two days since Jaune and his friends went into Vale. Everything had gone off without a hitch then, and the trio capped off their day going their separate ways. The next few days were primarily filled with passing the time and waiting for everyone to recover from their injuries.
"Come on," Jaune whined in anticipation. "What did you guys get?!"
In the workshop, Weiss and Ruby had set a roll of cloth down on the table. Whatever the cylinder-shaped object was, piqued Jaune's interest to an almost annoying level. It was made worse by the girls smugly looking at him like a dog waiting for his bone.
"Show us yours, and we'll show you ours," Ruby demanded without hesitation.
Jaune and Weiss both blushed, immediately understanding what the other was thinking. They each looked everywhere but where the other was standing—the blonde finding the nearby window with a group of kids in the frame fascinating. The Princess, on the other hand, found the stonework to be marvellous and how it was made from cheap granite.
"What? Did I say something?" Ruby cocked her head to the side, trying to figure out what she was missing.
"No-no, everything's all right," Jaune immediately replied, shaking the blush out of his cheeks. He thrust his hand forward before pulling it back in one motion, and the roll of cloth rocketed over into his hands.
The gasp Ruby produced made Weiss nearly leap out of her skin. Without warning, she bolted over to Jaune and circled him, asking a dozen questions faster than he was able to comprehend, let alone answer. The vortex of rose petals filled the shop so much that nobody could see anything. It wasn't until Ruby tripped over a chair that she stopped. The crash then filled the air alongside the pained grunts erupting from the girl's mouth.
"What did I say about using that ability," Weiss barked, looking down on the girl who was laying on her back and propped up against a wall. "Look at all of this!"
Almost every inch of the room was covered in rose petals. Jaune had them in his hair, shirt, and probably his trousers if he had shaken them out. The forge was filled to the brim with petals making that another chore to figure out.
"Sorry," Ruby said bashfully, smiling nervously at Weiss.
It didn't help as the Heiress groaned loudly and ran a hand through her hair. The petals that fell only added to the growing piles at their feet. However, after a few seconds, they all began to dissipate, revealing the once clean floor from earlier.
"Well, how is the spell working for you," Weiss continued, directing her attention to Jaune. "I've never used one like it, so I'm afraid I can't offer any tips."
"Great," he chirped, inspecting the palm of his hand. "I can move most of the stuff in here, but haven't tested it out on anything bigger."
What if I tried this?
Jaune turned towards Ruby and performed the same action with his hand, directing an open palm at the girl. With more force than he anticipated, Ruby was launched from she lay over to him. The two collided violently, knocking Jaune on his ass with Ruby sitting on him like a chair. A loud slap filled the room as Jaune's back clapped against the stone, simultaneously knocking the wind out of him.
"Working quite well, it seems," Weiss sarcastically expressed. "Do you still have the spellbook?"
"Yep..."
Weiss went over to the table where all of Jaune's stuff was and fished the book out of his satchel. She thumbed through it, reading up on the spell with a curious expression on her face. Jaune guessed she had tuned everything out by the time she got into the meat of it.
Losing her, Jaune turned back to Ruby, who had yet to get off him.
"Ruby, can you get off me," he asked windedly.
"Jaune, that was so cool," she nearly shouted in excitement. Still sitting on him, she turned to look at his face directly. The girl's mind not even considering the issue of personal space right now. "Have you tried throwing arrows?! Or-or maybe metal balls at something?!"
"No, I haven't, but can you get off me, please?!"
Finally, Ruby realised she'd been sitting on his chest the entire time. Jaune would have liked to think Ruby was aware of the whole boy-girl, keeping one another at a distance thing, but that did not seem to be the case. She was just so innocent that it hurt.
Jaune, however, was not perturbed by the issue of space. Ruby's butt was pressing against his rib-cage, and it was becoming agonising with her on top of him. His bashful demeanour made this an even more difficult situation to endure, especially with how inexperienced he was with girls.
Facing down a monster was more comforting than having a girl sit on him like this.
Jaune did admit to himself that Ruby had a nice butt, however. It was very shapely. Her build and clothing did not project this notion, but then again, she was sitting on him.
"Sorry," she squeaked, mimicking the colour of her cloak. If a flash, the Reaper shot off him, using her ability to gain a comfortable distance between the two. Her hood somehow got over her face, shielding her eyes from Jaune's. "Just look at what we got!"
You're too adorable, Ruby. Adorkable!
Jaune laughed to himself at the description, which fit her perfectly. Ruby had, 'girl next door scenario,' written all over her. It only served to add to her charm and probably made half of the other students at the Academy underestimate her. Some learned that first-handedly during their matches in Professor Goodwitch's class.
"I think you'll find it to be quite interesting, Jaune," Weiss added on, continuing to drink in the knowledge contained in the spellbook.
Ladies, you had my curiosity, and now, you have my attention.
He picked up the bolt of cloth with a single hand. The object inside had some weight to it, somewhere in the range of four to five pounds. Taking the cover off revealed the head of a hammer inside. The metal was deep blue and covered with intricate swirled carvings. Each strike face of the hammer was flattened and constricted almost an inch from both sides. This left the tool looking like it was made with two disks welded to a stick. It would have if one of the faces were not larger than the other, containing far more metal. The haft was made from black oak with several langets riveted into the wood. All around, it was a sturdy tool regardless of the weird design.
"Woah..." Jaune mumbled in awe. "Guys... This is amazing!"
It was. Jaune didn't know how much this thing cost, but it had to be worth a small fortune. Sure, he had some ideas back when they went shopping; however, this thing was a masterwork. Jaune's dad would have killed for tools like this if he had the opportunity. Hell, Jaune himself would have conspired to commit unsavoury deeds to get his hands on this hammer.
"Told he would like it, Ruby," Weiss declared smugly. She then looked to Jaune. "Look at the enchantment, that's the interesting part."
Jaune focused on the tool and its qualities. It was just like when he first examined the enchantment on his necklace and sword, so this time, it came to him quickly.
Tubal Cain's Hammer:
A smithing hammer that channels the magical arts into every strike. Objects shaped by this tool will hold more strongly than anything forged by normal means.
"Tubal Cain's Hammer," Jaune asked with a curious expression.
"The First Blacksmith," Ruby mentioned positively. "You don't know who he is?"
"No, I know who Tubal Cain is," Jaune replied, swinging the hammer several times to test its balance. "But, I thought all of his tools have been lost for like thousands of years."
A guy like him predates the Great War by two thousand years. They don't even know his actual name. Just some stuff he worked on.
I think parts of Beacon Academy were made from an old clocktower that he built.
"It's a replica," Ruby clarified, taking a step closer to Jaune. "The girl in the magic shop said people bring in stuff like this all the time."
"Mages tend to give names of historically notable artefacts to their crafts as well," Weiss added on. "It drives up the prices for the wares and is a sort of marketing tool."
Figures...
There was probably a hot market out there somewhere for tools like this one anyway. Judging by how every kingdom aside from Atlas was expanding quickly, the larger towns would start getting more experienced artisans. Those craftsmen needed the tools to match their works, and the usual stuff wouldn't cut it. However, that didn't mean the basics were ignored.
"When Weiss heard..." Ruby looked over at the Mage. "What's her name?"
"Theresia."
"Yeah, when Theresia said you were getting Infusion, we thought this would work out for everybody," she explained energetically. "You can make all kinds of cool gear for us, and use your spells to upgrade them."
"So, we're trading the hammer for me making you guys stuff?"
"No," Weiss corrected dryly. "There's no change in ownership. Ruby and I bought it, but we think you could be of use to us since we're not proficient in blacksmithing. Especially with the multi-tool you are becoming, there are some experiments I would like to try out with Infusion depending on how far you have gotten into learning the spell."
I'm not mad about it. Especially if I get to use the hammer whenever I want!
There's so much stuff I want to make with this thing!
Some new armour, or maybe upgrading his weapons a bit more would be excellent right now. Not to mention Jaune could sell whatever he made to the other students for above-market prices. The Thief Classes tended to appreciate his knives anyway, so some better gear would have them returning for seconds.
"I'm still working on it," Jaune answered, rubbing the back of his head. "Those spells are hard to learn..."
I spent two days getting that thing to actually work. Makes the shield spell look easy.
"I can see," Weiss expressed, still immersed in the book. "Whoever wrote this ensured the spell did not use any spoken or material components. It's actually brilliant..." Her words trailed off as she found something else inside the book.
Ruby giggled, seeing how enthralled Weiss became. Jaune guessed the two of them knew they lost her immediately when she got her hands on the book.
"Do you wanna try something out," she asked, walking over to the pile of armour laying across the room. One of the smaller breastplates was her choice, plucking that out of the stack and beginning to strap it to her chest.
"What did you have in mind?"
Why is she putting armour on?
"When Weiss said you were getting a telekinesis spell, I thought it would be a good idea to try using it as a weapon," Ruby explained, tightening down the last strap. "If you can get really good at using the spell, maybe you can throw rocks or metal hard enough to kill something? It was just an idea I got after we came to back to the Academy!"
That's interesting...
"So, like a magic sling," Jaune guessed, cocking his head to the side.
"Uhhhh, yeah," she chirped, skipping over to the other side of the forge. "Have you ever used on before?! I tried it out when I was younger but never got the hang of it!"
"I had one when I was kid," Jaune said, picking up a piece of metal and inspecting its qualities. The chunk being too hard made for a poor slug, so he tossed it to the side. Picking up another, he analysed it further. "So, did my sisters, but we didn't do too much with them. Just shooting rabbits or squirrels with my dad when he went out hunting with the Count."
Those were some of Jaune's fonder memories. A ten-year-old version of himself being taught how to use a sling by his older sister. He sucked at it the first dozen times but eventually was hitting bullseyes alongside the girls. Alas, that was just before Jaune got it into his head that he wanted to become an adventurer. The next several years did not have as many pleasant memories attached to them.
"Your family was friends with your noble," Ruby mentioned, playing with one of the looted swords. "I guess that makes sense because of how Samson talked about him..." She balanced the tip of the blade on her fingers. "So, he was kind of big deal back then?"
"Sort of," Jaune said hesitantly, finally picking out a piece of metal he liked. "He never told us about everything he's done as a mercenary, and I don't remember ever hearing about a war on the frontier, so I'm kind of clueless. But, he did a lot of the same stuff I've done. Just hunting monsters and making money by working with the nobles." He grabbed his tongs, gripping down on the metal bar and thrusting it into the forge.
The bright yellow flames began heating the metal up. In the meantime, Jaune set his tools aside and sat on top of the anvil, focusing his attention onto Ruby. The girl was still playing with a sword, probably making Crescent Rose jealous being left alone like that while she messed around with another weapon.
"What about your dad," Jaune asked wiping some soot off his hands. "Yang told me a little about him when we were in Saexhollow, but I haven't gotten much since then."
Jaune remembered their mother wasn't around anymore, so he didn't feel like prying into it. Judging by how Yang reacted when he brought it up, something had happened. More than likely, it was painful for one or both of the girls, so Jaune decided to allow them to bring it up when they wanted.
"Not much, I guess," Ruby gave a non-answer, shrugging her shoulders. "He and my uncle graduated from Beacon and did a bunch of the usual adventuring stuff. Ozpin had them doing a lot of jobs for him, and they still won't tell us about it. Then Dad had Yang, so he settled down and became a teacher at Signal."
They were working for Ozpin too?
Jaune felt a lump in his throat at that. If twenty years ago, a group of kids were put in that position as well, then it might be Jaune and his friends carrying the torch. Whatever threats were on Vale's doorstep had to be dealt with sure, but Jaune wasn't comfortable with how far back it went.
"Signal?"
"Ummm," Ruby mumbled, trying to come up with a good answer. "It's like a pre-Beacon Academy... Kids would go there to get trained as adventurers to prepare them for Beacon. Yang and I have been going there since we were both thirteen."
So, I could have gone there too?
Too late now... Dad didn't give me the opportunity.
"Never heard of them before."
"That's not unusual," Weiss added on, finding herself a spot on top of the table with her back against the wall. "Combat schools tend to be very expensive to attend, and not everyone can afford it. Not to mention, they really don't publicise their services, so you need to have someone bring the idea to you."
"I thought that kind of thing would get spread around more. Do all of the kingdoms have those schools?"
"I know Mistral has them," Ruby answered. "Pyrrha would probably know all about it."
"Mistral is also the only kingdom to feature combat schools prominently," Weiss added on, turning a page in the book. "They send all of their orphans to attend them when they come of age. Each of them is then trained for nearly half a decade into soldiers standing on our level." She glanced up from her book at the other two. "It's one of the reasons why their army is growing quite dangerous. They stomped some of the most powerful Mistrali city-states into the ground a few years back, and they're still consolidating territory to this day."
So they basically have an army of Pyrrhas running around? That's not unsettling at all.
Hopefully, the war machine wouldn't turn their attention on Vale. While they weren't a large kingdom, Vale was a prime target for looting by bandits or wannabe upstarts. It didn't help that nearly ninety per cent of the population was sequestered on the western coast. That left a lot of open territories for armies to sneak around undetected before they ran into a town. Those thousands of miles of forests and mountains were wholly deserted.
"Have you heard anything new about them, Weiss," Ruby asked, picking through the armour for more pieces.
"I heard rumours that they were going to try colonising Sanus," Jaune chipped in. He grabbed his tongs, pulling out the piece of metal he'd been heating up.
Taking a standard hammer, Jaune tapped the flat bar on the side of the anvil. The bright yellow hunk folded over on itself enough that Jaune flipped it once and hammered the two halves together. He had to work quickly, stamping the nearly molten steel into a more robust shape before it cooled. As it turned into more of a cylinder, Jaune thrust it back inside the coals to reheat.
"I haven't been told very much," she revealed, setting the book down for a second. "Mistral's government has never spent too much time on outside trading with other kingdoms. The Vasilias dynasty had an embassy in Mantle, but they hardly ever arranged any deals with my father."
"Kind of the opposite of Vale, dontcha think," Jaune suggested, turning the steel over to heat it evenly. "We and Atlas are best friends, and Vacuo trades with us all the time."
A group of three relying on each other was better than one which was forced to stand alone. The numbers advantage always made up for whatever was thrown at it. Unless the other side had some brilliant commanders who managed to turn the entire battle on them. Then things would probably get dicey.
"Ehhh, I don't think so," Ruby denied, taking a sip of water. "The empire's been around since-like, forever, so it works out. I heard they're kinda strict, but they don't have problems with famines. They just do things differently. Vale doesn't try conquering their neighbours because we don't have any."
She's got a point...
Jaune pulled the slug back out of the forge and grabbed his hammer. The nearly white-hot piece of metal moulded itself like clay under his hands. In a few good strikes, the slug had been mostly rounded out, but still remained a semi-sphere with many flattened edges to it. With another plunge, the ammunition went back into the flames for a final quench.
"Much of that depends on the ruling body, however," Weiss expressed. "You can have kings pushing for war even if their country is starving. Atlas and Vale are lucky when it comes to this because our rulers do try to focus on dealing with internal strife. Mistral does not have that sort of flair..."
"Lots of corruption, I'm guessing?"
"You would be right," Weiss concurred, sounding enthused with the level of discussion. "The imperial bureaucracy is hardly an efficient machine. Vale is quite successful when dealing with its own problems because the system is much more contained." She glanced away from the two for a half-second. "Atlas, on the other hand... I would be lying if I said we had the best system. Unfortunately, my father's sycophants like to neglect affairs of state for frivolous pursuits."
Wine, jewellery, and unnecessarily large estates. The same thing we saw back in Whiteshale. I can't imagine how bad it gets up there. Atlas has a hard time producing enough food for itself already, and their nobles are screwing around.
All it takes is one bad harvest and people are going to get hurt.
Jaune pulled out the cherry-red ball from the forge, allowing it to stand in the open air for several seconds. At just the right moment, he dunked it into an oil bath he prepared several days ago. Flames shot out from around the bullet as they were heated up to over nine-hundred degrees but soon dissipated to a mere boil. A few more dunks into the oil allowed for the rest of the heat to duct through the liquid.
"Okay, Ruby, it's ready," Jaune announced, rolling the slug around in his hand. The thing was still hot, so he couldn't keep a grip in it for too long. "What's the plan?"
He turned around to find that Ruby was decked out in almost a full suit of armour. Only plates, and no undergarments to protect her further. Most of it was far too large for her, being made in men's sizes only. However, it covered all the important bits better than armour specifically sized to her dimensions.
"Hit me with it," Ruby demanded, flipping down the faceplate on the bascinet. She pointed to a spot directly on her chest where the armour would have the best chance of deflecting the slug.
"Are you sure," Jaune asked, trying to be certain about her choices.
He had not yet thoroughly tested the capabilities of what the Telekinesis spell could do. Jaune finally managed to use the magic just this morning, so he knew for damn sure that moving stuff around was not the hard limit. In fact, the book actually made a comprehensive series of applications that a mage could apply.
"This sounds like a terrible idea, you two!"
"Yep, just do it before I chicken out!"
"Okay..."
Please don't be mad at me...
Jaune aimed his hand towards the centre of mass. Without warning, he released the slug, forcing it to rocket towards Ruby's chest faster than the two could see. A loud clang rang out as they collided, and the girl was dropped like a sack of potatoes. It sounded like all of the air was pushed out of Ruby's lungs, leaving her wheezing lowly on the ground.
"Oh shit!"
Please be alive!
He tore off her helmet and tossed it to the side. Underneath, Ruby's face was contorted into one of pain. The same expression one would have if they stubbed their toe on something. Ruby wanted to scream, but no sound came out. She forced herself to take one breath, then released a hoarse groan.
"Oh god," Ruby croaked softly, beginning to reach for her chest. "That hurts so bad! Why did you guys let me do that?!"
"You're the one who told us to do it, you idiot," Weiss barked furiously, approaching with a knife in hand. "Sit up so we can get this armour off you and see what it looks like."
A few strokes with the blade and the leather straps holding the breastplate on were cut. Weiss then threw the plate into Jaune's chest before she pulled up Ruby shirt to inspect the damage. A few pained grunts came from the Reaper as Weiss poked and prodded the girl's stomach.
Jaune, in turn, inspected the breastplate. The slug had hit her square in the chest, denting the plate inwards almost an inch. It did not even come close to breaking through but would have if thrown just a little harder. The force imparted on the plate indeed rang true, striking Ruby without any inhibition a gambeson would offer.
Jeez, imagine if that hit you in the face. Arrows don't even dent steel plate.
Clearly, for a ranged weapon, the spell worked out fine as an impromptu sling. It also skirted around Jaune's Passive's restriction against harmful offensive magic. As for the exact reason why, it eluded Jaune still.
Probably because I'm not directly hitting her with it. If I tried to hurt her with the spell specifically, I don't think it would let me.
"Jaune, come look at this," Weiss beckoned, pulling him over to Ruby.
Looking down at her stomach, the two were already staring at a rather large bruise starting to form. Every breath Ruby drew in, made the girl wince and stop immediately. Although it did not seem to be anything serious. At least from looking at it from the surface. There weren't any signs of internal bleeding from what Jaune could see.
"Do you want me to use my healing magic on it, Ruby," Jaune asked, looking the girl directly in the eyes.
"Yeah," Ruby agreed, wincing as she spoke.
Okay...
Jaune placed his hand a few inches above Ruby's stomach, not making direct contact with the skin. Speaking the incantation, Jaune funnelled magic through his hands and into her wounds. The greenish-white glow of the magic slowly descended through the skin and began pulling the tissue back together.
However, seconds into the process, Ruby started cackling uncontrollably. From the last time Jaune used any healing magic on her, she had this same reaction. Now, it was much much worse, bringing the girl to tears not even two seconds after they started.
"Haaaaaaaaghghghhhhhhhh," Ruby wheezed, forcing what little air in her lungs out. "Stooppppp! That tickles!"
Jaune complied, pulling away as Ruby got through the fit. She grabbed at her stomach, rolling up into a ball and continued laughing. It was enough that Jaune and Weiss gave each other concerned looks thinking they somehow hurt the girl.
"Are you really that ticklish," Jaune asked, trying to get something coherent out of her.
Ruby coughed a few times, still laughing as she did so. But a few breaths brought her back in control of herself. She sat up with Weiss' help, still cradling her bruised stomach.
"Uhhh," she groaned painfully. "Yes... That's my weakness. Yang always tickled me till I almost peed my pants whenever we wrestled." Weiss pulled Ruby onto her feet, however, as she became upright, the girl nearly fainted and fell flat on her face.
"Woah-Woah-Woah," Jaune said as the two caught her. "You feeling light-headed?"
Ruby nodded, shaking her head up and down limply. From her expression, the girl seemed kind of out of it. Between the wound on her stomach and how hard she was laughing, the flow of oxygen and blood to her brain was likely disrupted.
"I'll take her back to the dorms and get her into bed," Weiss volunteered, allowing Ruby to use her as a crutch.
"Let me help," Jaune offered, attempting to take Ruby's other arm.
"I don't think that's a good idea," the Heiress stated, pulling Ruby away. "If we run into Yang, you're going to want to be as far away as possible."
Yang...
Jaune started getting this sinking feeling in his stomach. Not just from accidentally hurting his friend even if it was her idea, which didn't take away the guilt the boy was having. The thought of having to face down a seriously pissed off Yang out for blood put the fear of God into him.
Ruby was her little sister, how else was she supposed to react?
"Oh god," Jaune groaned, covering his face with his hands. "Yang's gonna kill me..."
[Ruby]
"Here, use my bunk for now," Weiss said, dropping her cargo off in the dorms.
Ruby fell into the bed, letting out a gentle breath of air. The feeling of the soft mattress on her back made the pain less of a bother. Even better, she didn't have to flex her abs to get up into her own bunk.
"Did you need anything, or are you just going to try taking a nap," Weiss asked, draping the covers over the girl.
"No," Ruby denied weakly, adjusting her posture with some pain. "Sorry about scaring you guys! I didn't think it would hit that hard!"
Ruby had expected to feel a solid punch to her chest, but not this. Her stupid Constitution couldn't handle something as small as that bullet. Jaune and all of her friends could take on pretty much everything and not feel a thing, but here she was. Aura down to almost zero.
Worse, she felt stupid about making her friends worry. Ruby hated it more than anything. She didn't want to see Jaune scared like that again.
"Please don't worry about it," Weiss begged, rubbing the back of her head. "Just try to rest up! Jaune wants us to go to the mine tomorrow."
Really?!
"Okay," Ruby chirped excitedly.
I can't wait for it!
First Ruby perspective! Didn't expect that, did you?!
I've been trying to find a place to fit her in somewhere, and slowly, I want to have the girls taking up equal parts of chapters with Jaune. I want them to start having their own chapters like in MAJMLYAI, but I need to get into the story more.
