Sorry about being gone for so long. I had to take a break from writing to deal with a surge of Neo Nazis on one of my other stories. After I got done with that, I was too pissed to continue writing anything and decided to focus on my finals.

Also, Vol 8 kind of slaps right now.

Weiss watched Ruby as she spat on the ground. The girl hunched over and trying to keep herself from vomiting. Heavy breaths escaped through her lips, sucking down air to stave off the effects of adrenaline. The Princess sought only to rest a hand on the younger girl's shoulder to act as some form of comfort. It would assist Ruby knowing that another was there to take care of her.

The Mage expected this pattern to continue for days or even weeks after the battle. Ruby was in such high spirits today, it disappointed Weiss to see her like this. If anybody were supposed to kill that vampire, it should have been Jaune, the experienced huntsman. Not the aspiring neophyte.

"Are you okay," Weiss asked, reaching for a waterskin on her side. The urge to vomit needed to be negated with a drink.

"Ugh," Ruby groaned, shaking her head. She took the water and downed several large gulps followed by a gasp. "I hate that feeling you get..." She spat once more, interrupting her thought.

Yes, that feeling...

Weiss knew what it was. She didn't have an exact word for it as she was not well-versed in psychology. However, it was something the girl had her own experience with upon her first-ever kill. Those feelings of guilt, anger, and regret at your actions among the images of their bodies burned into one's mind stuck with you. Most in Remnant seemed to go through this cycle with all of the battles fought, and fortunately, the lack of sustained warfare prevented it from getting any farther.

Ruby was lucky since she had this support structure standing by to assist with anything that came up. Not everyone was so privileged to have the kinds of friends she did when she needed them.

"You dropped your scythe," Weiss pointed out, gesturing to the mouth of the mineshaft. "Do you want Jaune to get it?"

Ruby replied with a nod, still unwilling to go back inside.

As the two continued speaking, the sounds of something being dragged against gravel came from the cave. Weiss turned to find Jaune dragging the corpse of the Vampire outside and into the light. It was at this time, she got a good look at her.

The clothes the vampire wore were tattered and practically rotting off her body. Her skin was desiccated and pale, akin to a walking corpse. It reminded Weiss of the draugr she and Jaune had battled during their Task.

"Are there any more of them," Ruby asked, standing up to her full height now.

Jaune turned and locked eyes with the pair as he continued. "No, I don't think so," he replied with strain. "She's a feral vampire. They usually don't travel in packs..." He paused for a moment, thinking about what he said. "At least, they're not supposed to. They're like people who've gone insane. They don't think about grouping up."

Yes... Very encouraging.

Jaune was right, however. From the literature, feral vampires were indeed just insane vampires. They did not have the faculties to strategise, and that's probably what led to this one trying to attack the trio in the cave. Had that been a proper vampire, they might not have been so lucky.

As Jaune passed by them, a dog trodded out from the mineshaft. He glanced around, observing his surroundings cautiously. The shepherd lowered its head and stared directly at the two girls and refused to move.

"Awww, there was a dog with her," Ruby expressed sadly, knowing what she'd done.

The trio ended up orphaning a poor animal by killing his owner. Weiss guessed the dog was about five or six months old given the size of it. That vampire more than likely took him with her when she turned. She just wanted to sequester herself away from the world with a pet.

Weiss kneeled down and held her hand out to the dog, beckoning him over. She had to try her hardest to contain the excitement flowing through her at the sight of the hound. Ruby and Jaune didn't know this, but she loved dogs. Weiss loved dogs.

Without a verbal command, the pooch trodded over to her. He was hesitant to sniff her hand, but soon acquiesced and pushed himself against her open palm. The dog quickly found its way into Weiss' arms, whining and yelping as he snuggled up against her. She didn't care about the dog hair that would surely be getting all over her clothes. Weiss's mind was fully absorbed into the little fluffy puppy sitting in her lap.

"Hey there," Weiss said cutely to the dog. "It's okay!"

"Ugh, I feel really bad now..." Ruby kneeled down to pet the dog. It looked like she was about to cry. "What are we going to do?"

"I'm going to keep him," Weiss declared immediately and without even a moment of consideration. She hugged the squirming puppy in her arms as tight as she could, emphasising her commitment.

A loud crash interrupted the two and they each turned to find Jaune charging the side of one of the buildings with his shoulder. With two more attempts, the entire structure gave way and the dilapidated house crumbled in on itself. Jaune went for a case on his side and removed a small amount of crushed fire Dust they'd prepared several days ago. He stood back and tossed it onto the wooden mass, and it caught alight—a proper pyre made for the vampire.

"Do you think they're going to let you keep him in the dorms," Ruby asked, continuing to pet the dog gently. "I didn't see anybody else bring pets."

"I have not seen such a rule," Weiss expressed, letting the dog go for only a moment. "I'm sure Ozpin won't object to it."

That man was was one of the more eccentric mages she'd known over the years. Weiss doubted he would care all that much until it became a problem he couldn't ignore. Goodwitch, on the other hand...

"Do you guys want to call it a night," Jaune asked from behind. "It's getting late."

The sun was preparing to descend over the horizon, and it would be dark soon. Already, the shadows among the trees and buildings were growing in the absence of light. Animals would start coming out to hunt or to scavenge for food, and the group's advantages would decrease astronomically without the sun. If there were vampires in the area, Weiss was hardly prepared to deal with more than a single rogue night hunter.

[Jaune: Several Hours Later]

The Paladin tossed a log onto the fire, stoking the flames into a low cooking temperature. They had taken over a small hut near the entrance of the mine and had fortified it enough to stop anything from wandering in. Luckily, some tools like axes and hammers were left behind, making this job more manageable. Jaune boarded the doors and shutters to the windows shut, giving them some extra security.

Both of the girls saw to preparing food. Ruby gathered some wild garlic and chives to add some fresh herbs to the stew Weiss tended to diligently. Another pot contained bread for tonight's feast that had already been baked and was resting in low heat.

The cabin itself was a modest one peasants would have generally lived in. Maybe, a tradesman if they were not as wealthy or didn't require such a nice home. The floor was made from dirt with a few rugs they draped over to keep them off the ground. However, the building had held up nicely, and the roof was actually given shingles, which mostly remained intact. Jaune thought it was one of the better shelters they could have found. Better than sleeping under the stars or in another cave again.

The only downside to this was there was not a single bed, only some benches which this family would have used as such.

"The food is ready," Weiss announced, stirring the pot once more before tapping the spoon on the rim.

Ruby and Jaune quickly grabbed themselves a portion and headed over to a large table. However, before Jaune sat down, he grabbed one of the leftover bowls inside the hut and scooped out a helping for the dog. Setting down the bowl on the floor, the dog began sniffing the stew and then proceeded to lick out some of the rehydrated beef.

"Dreizehn likes it," Jaune chirped as he sat down at the table.

"Dreizehn," Weiss asked with a raised eyebrow, sitting across from him.

"We don't know his name, so I came up with that," Jaune explained, taking the first bite of the stew with some bread.

The taste washing over his buds was immaculate. There was thyme and some rosemary in there, but Jaune couldn't pick out the rest. His palate was not sophisticated enough to discern them individually. Weiss would probably know about everything she dropped in there from just a taste.

"What kind of name is that," Ruby asked in solidarity with Weiss.

"Ruby you named your dog after a number," Jaune pointed out, taking another bite from the stew. However, the blank look he was getting from her forced the boy to explain. "Zwei is the number two in Old Valean. So, I went along with the naming scheme. Didn't want to call him Drei, because that would sound stupid, so Dreizen is the name."

"I didn't know that was a number," Ruby replied hoarsely, realising how wrong she probably was about the name she'd given her dog. "I can't count in Old Valean, I just thought it was cool."

"Yeah, it goes, Einz, Zwei, Drei, Vier, Fünf, Sechs, Sieben, Acht, Neun, Zehn, Elf, Zwölf, and Dreizehn," Jaune explained, counting them off with his fingers.

Counting was pretty much the extent of his knowledge when it came to the language. It wasn't like the language used for magic. Jaune guessed that was a lot older than Valean and Common used today.

"It's not a difficult language to learn actually," Weiss added on. "In Mantle and Atlas, we speak a more developed version of Valean, but the language has mostly died off with the use of Common. The nobility tends to prefer it since it distinguishes themselves from the lower classes."

"Atlas, that's where the Mage's College is, right," Ruby asked taking a bite out of the still-warm bread.

"Yes, it is," Weiss answered, pressing her bread into the stew to soak up the gravy. "Pretty much all of the mages live there alongside the more educated members of the kingdom. The entire city is actually a floating island now."

"Whoa, that's cool," Jaune exclaimed, setting his utensils aside to listen. "How did they do that?"

Getting an entire city to float was something out of fiction to Jaune. It was way too big for him to consider. Sure, a couple buildings, but not a major city with thousands of people living inside of it. There were naturally floating islands too, but those were barely the size of a large village.

"The Arch-Mage, James Ironwood, used Dust and enchantments to lift the entire city out of the earth below," Weiss explained. "It was something he had been working on for the last twenty years and was finally able to make it work just before I began training there. I don't know all of the specifics, and I'm sure the Arch-Mage would want to keep them secret for now."

"Aww, I want to go see that," Ruby expressed excitedly. She cupped her chin in thought. "I wonder if they have quests in Atlas for adventurers here..."

"That sounds like fun," Jaune agreed wholeheartedly. "I always wanted to get out of Vale, and see what the other kingdoms were like! Maybe the others would want to come with?"

Jaune knew that Solitas was a frozen wasteland, but everything Weiss talked about made it more enticing to go north and brave the cold. Having the rest of his friends along with would turn that trip into an unforgettable experience. If they were recruiting adventurers from outside of the kingdom for help, there was going to be money in it too—thousands more than what they were paying in Vale for some of the more challenging jobs.

"We would have to travel there during the summer, so that might have to be put off until a later year," Weiss countered flatly. "Getting caught in the ice fields is something no captain would risk, but we also need the money to charter a vessel, which is nowhere near what we can afford. However, I'm sure the Arch-Mage wouldn't mind having students from another Academy as guests. One of his students, especially."

"We could go to Mistral during the winter," Ruby proposed. "It's warm the entire year over there, and I know people trade all the time with them. Getting a ship would be easier."

Pyrrha can be our guide too...

"That's the plan then," Jaune asked everyone. Weiss seemed on board with it, and so did Ruby. "All right, let's try to save some money up, so we can get a ship. But, we need to see about a house first, though. We don't know how all of the stuff with that curse is going to pan out."

...

Everyone started settling into bed as night fell. Jaune was stationed closer to the door and had his blades neatly laid out on the floor. Weiss and Ruby were just opposite of the fire pit set up similarly. The only difference being the dog, which curled up between everyone.

"Ugh, I'm kinda nervous," Ruby spoke, breaking the silence that had fallen. "What if something tries to break into the hut?"

The girl had been tense for the entire evening. Jaune was understanding of it given what she had done earlier today, so letting her vent was preferable. Putting on a brave face didn't do anything to help if you couldn't get things off you chest.

"I wouldn't worry too much," Jaune said, pulling out a bottle from his bag. He uncorked the rum and poured a splash into his cup. "Want some? Help take the edge off..."

"Sure," she expressed, holding out another cup. Jaune poured only a little in there as a starter.

"Are you two sure about that," Weiss questioned with caution in her voice. "If you get drunk, I'm not going to be able to wake both of you up and fight everything off at the same time."

Jaune took a sip of the coffee-rum mixture, finding the sweetness of the rum and bite of the coffee just to his liking. He silently thanked Ren again for introducing the idea of alcohol and coffee to him. The two combined was simply a way to enhance a drink he'd already enjoyed. Not to mention that it really helped warm him up, especially in the early spring nights of Sanus. Even with the fire and a blanket over his shoulders, the cold seeped in through the poorly insulated hut, cutting right to the bone.

"I wouldn't use rum typically, but with the dog here, I can do whatever," Jaune explained, gesticulating with the cup in one hand. "He'll hear anything outside before any of us do, so I feel pretty safe right now."

"Hopefully, it stays quiet out there," Ruby expressed, holding her drink with both hands. "I don't want to fight any more vampires tonight..." She took a sip of her coffee and glanced at her companions. "But, what was it like for you guys to... You know... Kill someone..."

With that question, the mood got sucked out of the room and was replaced with a sombre one. Weiss and Jaune both set down their drinks and fell silent once more, neither wanting to address the question first. The other desired for them to take the first stab at it. Not that it was awkward or anything, just a hard question to answer.

"Difficult," Weiss began hesitantly, partly dodging the question from Jaune's perspective. "I would rather not get into specific details, but it's never easy. You simply have to find a way to justify it."

Jaune exhaled, rubbing the back of his head. "I guess it's different for me," he explained his view.

[Jaune: Several Months Ago]

Oh shit...

Jaune watched through a small spyglass as a vampire gutted a man with his bare hands. The poor soul was tied down on an altar and left to the mercy of those monsters. There was simply nothing anybody could do without getting killed outright by the vampires.

Right now, the boy was easily outnumbered ten to one. The vampire currently carving the peasant up was probably the leader of the den and especially powerful. Higher-level adventurers or the stupidly brave were the only ones capable of dealing with this kind of infestation. Nothing Jaune had in arsenal was meant to deal with an entire brood.

The boy got up slowly, taking great care to avoid stepping on even a twig. Anything out of the ordinary was going to call every vampire in the area down on his location, and then it would game over. Jaune considered dropping his bag just in case he needed to run.

Come on, Jaune... Need to tell Maximallian about this.

Every moment the vampires remained here, Bar was in danger of being attacked by the fiends. With every person bitten, another vampire was going to rise and join their ranks. Soon, it would get out of hand, and everyone in Bar would be dead, a vampire, or a thrall serving them. And vampires did not discriminate. That meant his sisters would be among their victims.

The thought of that scared the crap out of Jaune. His family was hardly capable of defending itself. Their father could not keep up with an entire brood and watch them at the same time.

His heart rate skyrocketed with every gust of wind. Jaune kept an eye out in all directions, just waiting for something to rush out of the woods and kill him. Only the desire to book it back to Bar kept him from panicking.

As he snuck through the underbrush, Jaune came upon a small clearing. Breaking through the large bushes bordering it, he ran into a girl. The young woman paused at his intrusion and stared in his direction with a surprised look. Each shared the same expression, not moving an inch from where they stood.

"Hey, there's vampires back there, we need to get out of here and warn Bar," Jaune pleaded with the girl in a whisper.

The boy expected an answer, but all he got was the sight of her eyes turning from blue to red and a set of fangs erupting from her canines. Jaune wasn't able to get his silver sword out in time to cut her down as she leapt to him in a single bound. The vampire cocked back her right fist and slammed it into the boy's shield, throwing him back nearly thirty feet.

Jaune tumbled against the ground, losing his bag somewhere in the fall. His shield became dented in the centre, perfectly matching the fist which created it. As he hit a tree and stopped himself, Jaune let out a low groan and stood up weakly.

Goddammit... That hurts...

Before the Vampire was able to follow up, Jaune grabbed Ira Rubrum from its sheath. He spun the blade in his fingers and entered the plough stance. Jaune refused to move from this spot, keeping the tree behind him to act as a barrier. His ears followed every sound in the forest, hearing where the vampire was at.

Where are you?

However, she had fooled him, charging directly through the tree from behind. The trunk snapped in half, and she tackled him in one move. Jaune felt as if his spine would break under the pressure subjected to it by her attack.

His sword was thrown from his hands, and the boy was rolled onto his back in the tussle. The vampire straddled him and cocked back her right arm, growing a set of elongated claws to slash at him. Without hesitation, she did so, clawing right through the breastplate and gambeson underneath. Both her index and middle finger claws were able to cut deeply into Jaune's stomach, eliciting a howl of pain from the boy.

Knowing he couldn't throw her off, Jaune looked around for anything that could be used to get rid of her. In tackling him, the vampire and he landed right next to his bag, just close enough to grab at it. So, Jaune reached as far as he could into one of the pockets and managed to take a pinch of what could get out.

He whipped around and cast a small flurry of silver dust into her eyes, causing the vampire to cry out. She choked and grabbed at her throat with the particles she breathed in entering her oesophagus and lungs.

Jaune picked her up and threw the girl off him, using his strength and her lack of focus to his advantage. He cocked back his right arm and delivered several powerful blows to her face, breaking her nose and possibly her skull.

Leaving her for only a moment, Jaune searched for Ira Rubrum. He found it only a few feet away, grabbing the handle and trudging back over to the vampire. She was still reeling from the damage Jaune returned to her, but he didn't allow the girl to have any chance at recovery.

Standing above the girl, Jaune gripped the sword in both hands and thrust it deep into her chest, piercing her heart. She croaked as the blade cut right through her, but did nothing else, only falling back with a stream of blood exiting the corner of her lips.

...

"I guess I had it pretty easy," he explained upon finishing his story. "Killing vampires is like putting down a rabid dog. They're suffering, so I made sure to give them the least painful death as possible." He poured himself a generous shot of rum. "When it comes to people, I'm just defending myself as if they were monsters. I try not to think about it too much. I just know other people are going to get hurt if I don't do something, so I guess I'm obligated to." He finished by taking a long drink from his cup.

"Did your dad teach you that," Ruby asked, setting her cup aside.

"Eh, no," he confessed truthfully. "He was in it for the money, really. Killing people for money isn't really something you're gonna have a justification for other than, 'I'm hungry' or 'I have a family to feed.'"

It wasn't as if Jaune disapproved of the lifestyle. His father found himself a niche and stuck with it until there were kids. He at least got to do something with his life and didn't spend it all farming. There wasn't any reason for him to yearn for something greater because he had done what he loved for ten years. Now, he could take it easy, satisfied with his current projects.

"That makes us sound like noble mercenaries from your perspective," Weiss pointed out, taking a sip of her drink.

"Yeah, you have a point," Ruby agreed in realisation. "Were not soldiers, but we actually have to protect the kingdom. Mercenaries don't care as long as they get paid."

"Although, it might be easier for them since they don't have a duty," Weiss added on. "They're not required to come to the kingdom's aid if we're attacked. They can run or just lay low until the war is over and work for the next person in charge." She cupped her chin as a thought entered her head. "Come to think of it, we actually sound like thanes..."

"Wha?"

"Thanes are warriors who've sworn themselves to one of the regional jarls," Weiss explained. "They can do whatever they want in the meantime, but they have to serve the jarl in the event there's a war. I would think they're more similar to knights, but they just hold a more archaic name for their rank."

"And jarls are like counts?"

"They're not too different, but they lead an individual tribe of people," Weiss replied. "Your counts are merely regional rulers. They're not as connected to the people."

That's cool, I wonder what the rest of their society is like... It can't be any weirder than Vale's.

"However, I am going to call it a night," Weiss announced. "If we're going to be trudging around in the dark, I suggest the two of you do the same."

[The Next Morning]

"Okay, who wants to go first?"

The three of them were staring down the entrance to mine now. The sun had fully risen, and they determined it was safe for the team to head out. Only the girls pushed Jaune forward as the sacrificial lamb since neither of them wanted to be the first one to go into mine.

Lighting the torch, the trio made their descent deep into the pit with the dog in tow. The added benefit of the hound was the ability to smell out any threats that lie deeper within. Luckily, Jaune knew that vampire would have attacked and killed anything else down inside the cave. So, he suspected there wouldn't be any problems on that end.

"We're looking for metal veins on the walls, guys," Jaune announced, handing a torch to Weiss in the back, leaving Ruby open. "You'll know it when you see one."

Much of this cave looked the same no matter where one looked. The only feature the trio could discern was some of the bloodstains on the walls from where Ruby killed that vampire, but there was nothing else. Any ore on this level had already been excavated long ago.

Heading further into the mine for another half hour, they passed what looked like a small camp on the first level. There was a bed here and a few trinkets, but nothing else. Jaune searched around for something to identify the girl; however, the camp didn't have anything beyond a knife.

Well, time to keep going...

A few feet past the camp was the first set of stairs leading down. At the bottom, the tunnel was filled with water up to the waist. Jaune was able to move around just fine, but Ruby and Weiss were nearly up to their chests in the muck. The pool was freezing too.

Jaune chose to keep going, and the girls followed. The desire for silver keeping them in the game. If it got any deeper, they would have to stay behind.

However, that didn't matter. Another hundred or so feet in, Jaune caught a glimpse of something on the wall. Weiss and Ruby crowded around as he examined the rock. The addition of the Mage's light spell made it clear to them.

"Is that it?!"

"Hold on, let me check!"

Jaune took a heavy swing at the rock, breaking away a hefty portion. Ruby carefully removed the waste for the boy to keep working at it. The sound of Jaune celebrating brought the girl running back.

"Hooohhooooo, yeah baby," he shouted, balling his hands up as he cheered.

The sight of a dull grey rock against light brown told the group they struck gold. Or silver in this case. A rich vein from the looks of it.

"Okay, Ruby head up there and get the bags," Jaune ordered, hanging up the pickaxe. "Weiss, you and I need to light this tunnel up!"

As Ruby bolted off to take care of her end, Weiss and Jaune got hard to work. They had several hours to grab what they could carry before being forced to cart it all back to Beacon.

And they have chosen to adopt the dog and found some silver! That brings the mining trip to a close right now. However, the big dungeon run the group's going to do is coming up! That's their first big quest.
