Sojourner won because a big old tsunami hit the islands and she happened to be on the highest ground.
Jaxxon won by befriending Eleanor and Aimee, who both survived the Bloodbath. They were the final four with Kazuo, who killed Aimee before being killed by Eleanor, who then bled to death.
Rotary Oxford- District Three
I still couldn't believe Mei let me be her ally. She was so much smarter than me. I really wasn't much help to her. And she was so pretty, too. I did the best I could to be a good ally- I did things like gather firewood and keep watch at night- but I still felt insanely lucky.
"Is it almost done?" I asked, peering over Mei's shoulder.
"Almost," she said. She twisted a wire around a metal rod and carefully screwed two metal halves together. The metal rod was my favorite part, since I helped with it. I was the one that got that last bit of funding by convincing Three to help us out. Mei was smarter, but I was more cheerful, and sponsors love cheerful kids.
"This is gonna be great," I said. I didn't care much for the blowing someone into bits part, but hand grenades were undeniably cool. Mei said no matter how big I thought the explosion would be, it was going to be bigger. "Maybe we can take out all the Careers at once."
"I hope we don't get that close to them," Mei said. So far, only Mako was dead, and he was the least scary of them.
"They're about the only ones left," I said. It was just us, the pack, and Eleanor, and we both had a pretty good idea of who the cannon had been a few hours ago.
"So they'll be coming for us. But when they see this, they'll stop," Mei said.
When it was finished, there was a hush over our camp. I felt weird, like I shouldn't even breathe, or I might set the whole thing off. Mei kept it down by her legs, wedged lightly into a root so it wouldn't roll around.
Mei leaned forward suddenly, and I thought she randomly faceplanted. I didn't see the knife until the sunlight caught the blade and glittered.
"One more down," Arielle said. She and the rest of the pack materialized out of nowhere. I wondered how long they'd been there and realized they didn't have to worry about getting close to us if we never even knew it.
"I got this," Chantal said, drawing back the spear in her left hand and keeping the one in her right. She needed something to fight the others with after she killed me, after all.
I threw myself down across Mei, and Chantal laughed. "She's dead, dummy. You heard the cannon," she said. She threw the spear, and I threw the grenade. It did make a bigger explosion than I thought.
Later, in the Capitol, they told me Chantal's spear went pretty close to my heart. Mei's grenade went pretty close to the Careers. And I finally knew what they meant when they said close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
Sojourner and Jaxxon were both fillers from me, so I didn't go as detailed. Now I have three done at once!
