I admittedly can't be bothered to rewatch the SkullGreymon episode to see whether my ascribed of the Chosen Children attitude towards soccer is correct. If it is not, I'll hide behind the emotional situation of the time period as the story takes place after Taichi had been transported back to the human world.

Taichi having gone missing after beating Etemon had another disadvantage in addition to the obvious factor that their group was falling apart: nobody else wanted to play soccer.
Yamato, Mimi and Koushiro didn't care about the game and playing against Takeru or the Digimon is unfair. Jo didn't either, but he did not want to say no.
He was a force of nature.
Sora had never seen someone who's never really played this game be so good with the ball.
"Jo!" she shouted passionately, "Once we are back in the real world, I will make you join a football club!"
