Chapter 121
The One who Survived
NO POV
It was the start of a new day in the Fairy Tail guildhall. The other members were going about the same old routine as they always did, only they didn't have Natsu and the other core members with them, unaware of what was going on over at Tenrou Island. Macao and Wakaba were having a drink together trying to relax, but Macao couldn't help but feel a bit antsy.
"Where the heck is Romeo?" Macao grumbled impatiently. "Why hasn't he made it back to the guild yet?"
"He tagged along with Alzack and Bisca on a job," said Wakaba.
"You got to be kidding me," sighed Macao. "They probably ditched him somewhere so that they could go make out if I know those two."
"Those two? Making out? Get real," scoffed Wakaba smiling. "Those two can't even hold a decent conversation without going red in the face on each other."
Max stood not too far away, while Warren and Macao were at the request board looking through job requests.
"Say, has anyone noticed that we've gotten a lot of new members lately, or is it just me?" Max asked as he looked around. "I mean I know that we're a pretty big guild, but..."
"Well, yeah, and that should be expected," said Warren. "Our reputation has been going up quite a bit lately, and we'll need all the able-bodies we can get to handle all the requests we've been receiving."
"No joke," agreed Nab, as he gestured towards the board. "Just take a look at all of these requests we've gotten already."
"And why do you sound so excited?" sighed Warren. "You never go on any jobs anyway, so you shouldn't even care."
Nab could only scratch his head as he sheepishly chuckled.
Not too far away at another table, Jet and Droy were enjoying themselves to a hearty lunch. Droy's plate with filled with all sorts of meat and other foods, and gorged on them all savoring every taste.
Laki then walked up to them. "Geez, take it easy, Droy," she scolded affectionately. "If you keep pigging out, you're going to end up big as a blimp."
"Naw, it's fine, Laki," smiled Droy between bites. "I may eat a lot, but I hardly gain any weight."
"You might want to listen to Laki if I was you, Droy," warned Jet. "Otherwise you might end up as big as Reedus over there."
Jet then gestured towards the man in question who was busily at work painting a picture of Wendy who didn't pay any mind at what Jet said.
"Out, but the only reason I'm like this is because of my magic," said Reedus. "So it's not like I'm like this by choice."
Then Bisca and Alzack walk into the guildhall with Romeo, Macao's son in tow.
"Hey, Dad! I'm back!" announced Romeo.
"Finally!" Macao sighed with relief. "I can't even count how many jobs you've tagged along lately."
"Well, what do you expect? He is the son of a wizard," chuckled Wakaba. "Although it is kind of sad to see that his old man isn't the one he looks up to."
"Get off my case, Wakaba!" Macao snapped indignantly. "No one asked for your opinion!"
Macao then took a seat at the table sitting between Laki and Jet. He looked around looking for a certain pink-haired fire dragon slayer and his friends, but they were nowhere to be seen.
"Man, it's so boring without Natsu and the others around," Romeo sighed. "I wish they'd come back already."
"Yeah, I'd have to agree with you on that one, kiddo," said Jet. "No matter how many new members we gain, it always seems so quiet without them around."
"You can say that again," agreed Warren.
"With our best team, the S-Class wizards, and even the dragon slayers, we're the strongest guild in Fiore now," said Max. "But with all of them gone, it's no wonder it's so quiet."
"Speaking of the S-Class trial, I can't believe that it's happening right now!" said Romeo excitedly. "I wonder how it's going."
"We've got another set of strong contenders this year," said Wakaba. "But that reminds me of something. Why did Wendy and Willy go along with them again?"
"I think Wendy was someone's partner, right? Maybe she partnered up with Willy because he was chosen," said Macao. "No, wait... that's not right. Master, chose seven participants this year, didn't he?"
"Wow, you guys must be getting old, if you've already forgotten something that important," said Laki.
"Say, Dad, you think that Natsu will become S-Class?" asked Romeo. "When he does, I want to grow up to be an S-Class wizard just like him!"
"That's all and good, son, but you got to be a normal wizard first," said Macao. "When you get that far, then we'll start talking about the S-Class trial."
Romeo couldn't help but feel even more excited. "All right! I'm all fired up now!" he cheered.
It seemed that today was going to be a lazy and quiet day for everyone in the guildhall, but that peace atmosphere would soon be shattered.
For at that moment, the doors of the guild opened, and someone walked in causing Wakaba, Macao, and a few others to look up wondering who had just walked in. Everyone then gasped for the person that had just entered, was Doranbolt wearing his Magic Council robes rather than his attire as Mest.
"What the crap? Why is someone from the Council here?" asked Jet with a hint of anxiety.
"Beats me," said Droy. "But I can tell you for sure that it can't be a good thing."
"Pardon me, but who is the person in charge of this guild?" asked Doranbolt.
Macao then stood up and walked up to him with Wakaba and a couple of the other members.
"Is there something that I can help you with, Sir?" asked Macao, trying not to be nervous.
"My name is Doranbolt, Sub-captain of the Fourth Enforcement Unit of the Magic Council," Doranbolt said. "And yes, there is. I wish to speak to whoever is in charge of the Fairy Tail guild."
"Well, our Master's out at the moment, but maybe there's something that I can help you with," said Macao. "Did something happen? If anyone of our members has caused you trouble..."
"Oh, crap. Did Natsu or somebody else destroy something again?" Droy asked worriedly. "If he did, we're so sorry that happened, and it won't happen again!"
"Hey, you idiot! Don't go saying something like that!" Jet whispered as he nudged Droy sharply. "You trying to make us look guilty?"
But Doranbolt's face was grave and solemn as he looked up at Macao. "No, I'm afraid it's something more complicated than that. Something that may come as a shock to you and your guild with what I'm about to tell you."
Macao and the others were puzzled, but they all kept silent as Doranbolt began telling them what had happened.
WILLY'S POV
When I came to, I was staring up at the ceiling while lying on the bed. I felt dazed, confused, and disoriented in the head as I held my hand on my forehead in pain, while looking towards the window to see the sun was shining brightly. My eyes felt a bit dry, so I blinked a few times while rubbing my eyes, as if I had just woken up from a long nap. Feeling a bit confused as to why I was here in the first place, I slowly sat up only to feel some slight pain all over my body as well as tightness.
I looked down at myself and saw that there bandages and gauze wrapped all around my form. My right arm excluding my hand, my chest, and my right leg were all covered in dressings, and I could feel that there were some bandages on my left cheek as well as some other areas. I also noticed that there was an IV stuck to my left arm, which was filled with water making sure that I'd have the appropriate fluids.
"Where... am I? And how did I get here?"
The door then opened, and a male doctor walked in. When he saw me, he smiled as he walked up to me.
"Well, hello there. Glad to see that you're awake," the doctor said. "How are you feeling?"
"Well... I feel fine. I guess," I replied. "But... where am I? What's going on? And how did I end up here?"
At that moment, I heard the sound rumbling. A rumbling noise that grew louder and louder until the door burst open with a bang, and in stormed in a group of people, and leading the charge was a man with short blue hair that was middle-aged, had stubble on his chin, and also had dark eyes that looked at me with worry as he came up to me.
"Willy! You're awake!" the blue-haired man cried, "Thank god! You doing okay?!"
"We heard what happened from that Magic Council guy, and we came as soon as fast as we could!" the man with puffy hair said. "Geez, you look like you've been through hell and back! What the hell happened?!"
"Tell us everything! Please tell us what happened!" a brown bowl-cut haired man cried. "And please tell us what the Doranbolt cry from the council said wasn't true!"
"Hey! Settle down! All of you!" scolded the doctor. Then he recognized the group immediately. "Wait a minute. I know all of you, you're all from the Fairy Tail guild, right?"
"Yes, we are, and this guy's one of us," said blue-haired man. "Sorry for barging in unannounced, doc, but we come here and see our friend after hearing news about some of our other guildmates, and he's the only one who can tell us if what happened was true!"
I raised a brow in confusion. "Um... excuse me, sir, but I have no idea what you're talking about," I said. "Would you mind explaining what you mean?"
The blue man and the others stared at me like I had grown another head on my neck in a long silence. At last, bowl cut man spoke up.
"Willy, please tell me you're joking. If you are, you're not being funny," he said. "So, please stop joking around."
"But... I'm not joking. I'm serious," I said. "I honestly have no idea what you're talking about."
"I don't think that he's joking around, Max," said a man with black hair with tan skin. "Willy's not exactly the type of guy to joke. Especially over something like what we heard."
"Then what's the matter with him?" asked a fair-skinned carrot top with a top hat. "Did his brain get all scrambled up again?"
"You mean like amnesia?" wondered another man, who had black hair styled like a plant. "There's no way that could be, right? I mean he had it before and was cured. What are the odds that it's happened again?"
The blue-haired then turned to the doctor. "Well, doc? Did you find anything wrong with him when he was brought here?"
"Well, other than the burns on his right arm along with a few bruises and scrapes, everything is just fine," said the doctor. "No broken bones or damage to his internal organs, but as far as his mental state, I'm not quite sure considering that I was rudely interrupted before I had a chance to check."
He gave a slight glare towards Macao and the others, as they all looked away feeling a bit sheepish.
The doctor then went over to me, staring me right in the eyes. "Now then, do you know who you are?"
"Well, yeah. I'm Willy. Willy Falconer," I replied.
The doctor then held up three fingers. "Willy? How many fingers am I holding up?" he asked.
"Three, of course," I replied.
The doctor then pointed to the blue-haired man. "Do you know who this man is?"
I then looked at the man and squinted at him while trying to remember who this man's name was. It took a few seconds, but I shook my head in response.
"I apologize, but I'm afraid that I don't remember him. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've seen any of these people at all before."
The doctor paused, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Do you remember anything that had happened to you over the past day?"
I then took a minute to think, trying to remember back to yesterday, but this time, I kept drawing a blank, being unable to remember. I hummed while scrunching up my brow and crossing my arms, thinking harder, but it didn't help.
"Well... I'm sorry, but as I said before, I'm afraid I don't," I said. "I keep trying to remember, but..."
Then someone came bursting into the room, practically knocking the door off its hinges, causing everyone to jump. Standing there in the doorway was a man with scars on the left side of his face wearing strange white garb, while wearing an angry scowl on his face. Before I could react, he stomped straight up to me and grabbed me by the shoulders roughly.
"Is this some joke?!" he snapped as he shook me roughly. "How could you have amnesia again after everything that happened?! You were there when Acnologia destroyed Tenrou Island!"
"Wh-what?! Hey! Let me go!" I cried as I tried to pry the man away. "I have no idea what you're talking about! Where's Tenrou Island and what or who the heck is Acnologia?!"
The man with blue hair and the man with puffy brown hair then grabbed hold of the man with the scar and pulled him away from me as he struggled to get out of their grasp.
"Hey! Back off, man!" the blue-haired man yelled.
"There's no need to attack him like that!" the brown puffy haired man also yelled. "Unless you're trying to get on Fairy Tail's bad side!"
Then another man entered, who wore the same garb as the scarred man did, but he had black hair which was tied in a top knot, and also wore glasses.
"Doranbolt! That's enough!" he ordered. "You're way out of line, and are making the Magic Council look bad by your behavior!"
The scarred man that was identified as Doranbolt stopped struggling. When he calmed down, Macao and Wakaba then let the scarred man go, and he walked briskly out of the room.
"What was wrong with that guy?" I thought. "And why did he seem so angry with me? Did... something happen?"
NO POV
Everyone now stood outside of the room, including the doctor to discuss the issue with Willy. Macao and the others were especially worried.
"Okay, doc. What the hell is going on here?" demanded Wakaba. "I thought you said that Willy was fine!"
"If you were paying attention, you would have heard me say that physically, he was fine," corrected the doctor. "As far as his mental state goes, it's safe to assume that he has some form of amnesia."
"You've got to be kidding. Again?" Jet said. "I thought that he had gotten past it before."
"But wait a second, how could he have amnesia?" asked Laki. "I mean he's had it before, so why does he have it again?"
"I'm not sure, but there's no doubt in my mind that he has amnesia," said the doctor. "Most likely caused by severe trauma to the head."
"But you can cure him, right?" asked Warren. "I mean is this going to be temporary?"
"I'm not really sure," replied the doctor. "I've treated all sorts of people, but I've never seen anything like this before."
"You don't mean to say that he'll be stuck like this?!" asked Jet worriedly.
"Who can say? As I said, I don't know," the doctor said. "I've treated all sorts of people and wizards, but I've never had a case like that one before. The only thing I can advise you to do is to watch over him and let him recover until his memory eventually comes back to him or probably find a mage that specializes in magic that heals this sort of problem. Other than that, there's nothing more I can do."
And with that, the doctor then left, leaving Macao and his group, Lahar, and Doranbolt by themselves. Doranbolt was sitting on a chair, clasping his hands in frustration.
"I can't believe this," Doranbolt spoke quietly. "First, Tenrou Island was destroyed by Acnologia; then we find Willy to be the only one who survived, only to find that he doesn't remember anything that happened?"
"Hey, pal. If it's any consolation, we're having a hard time believing it too," said Macao. "I mean everything that you told us back at the guildhall sounds like a big lie, especially since you guys aren't exactly big fans of us."
"I can assure you, everything that my associate has told you is the truth," said Lahar. "We witnessed Tenrou Island's destruction with our own eyes, and we would never lie to you."
"But... it just can't be true!" Droy spoke. "That would mean that everyone on Tenrou Island is-"
"Don't even say it, Droy!" Jet snapped. "There's no way that Levy and the others are gone! They're okay! They just got to be!"
"Yeah, I mean you guys were able to find Willy out there," Warren spoke to Lahar and Doranbolt. "There have to have been other survivors!"
"We don't know for certain," said Lahar. "When we searched the area, he was the only one we found, there was no one else in the vicinity, and Tenrou Island was nowhere to be found. I know it's hard for you all to believe, but it's the truth."
"No, you're just not looking hard enough!" protested Max.
"I'm sorry," said Lahar, as he turned around to walk away. "If you insist on wanting to search, then, by all means, go ahead, but I'm afraid that there's nothing more we can do." He then looked at Doranbolt. "Doranbolt, we're leaving. We must return to the council."
Doranbolt then looked up about to protest, but Lahar gave him one look that told him to be quiet, so he said nothing. The two then got up and then walked away, leaving the group.
"Now what do we do?" wondered Laki.
"I've got no clue. At this point, there isn't much anything we can do right now, except keep an eye on Willy and help him remember what happened," sighed Macao. "At least that way, we'll be able to confirm what that Lahar guy said was the truth. Until then, I don't know how we're going to explain this to everyone else back at the guildhall."
"No kidding," said Max. "Let's just hope they don't start to panic when they find out."
As Lahar and Doranbolt walked outside of the hospital, Doranbolt couldn't help but feel angry and sorry for himself.
"You know it's not your fault, you know," said Lahar. "There was nothing else you could have done."
"But I can't help but feel that I'm partially responsible," growled Doranbolt bitterly. "I should have been more forceful, when I told them to leave. I could have even forced them to using my Direct Line! At least then things wouldn't be like this. I can't even use my Memory Magic to help him. If I did, that would make me even more like the bad guy."
"You did whatever you could," Lahar spoke quietly. "Besides, you know how that guild is. Despite their rowdy behavior, they're the type of people who would never walk away from a fight, even against an opponent as powerful as that creature."
"But isn't there anything else that we could do for them?!" Doranbolt asked. "There has to be something!"
Lahar then looked across to Doranbolt. "I'm afraid there isn't. You heard the doctor," he said. "Besides, we have to head back to the Council and report what happened."
Doranbolt then glared. "How can you be so heartless after everything that's happened?! Don't you feel obligated to help them?!"
"No, I don't because it's not my job, nor is it any of my business, neiter yours," Lahar replied coldly. "You know that isn't what we do. As members of the Enforcement Unit under the Magic Council, it's our job to uphold the sanctity of order, and bring those who break the law to justice, not play babysitter. You should know that by now."
Doranbolt was silent for a moment. Then he briskly walked past Lahar and stopped just in front of him with his back turned.
"Then maybe I shouldn't be a member anymore," he spoke quietly.
This made Lahar's eyes widen in shock as Doranbolt using his Direct Line disappeared leaving him all alone in the streets of Magnolia.
Now, I know what you're thinking, why in the world would I give Willy amnesia again?
My answer is that there's a good reason for this. However, I can't reveal everything just yet. You'll have to wait and see.
