Chapter 133
A Turbulent Showdown
NO POV
Natsu and Happy were in the East Forest, fishing by the stream for lunch. Happy was eager to be fishing, while Natsu wasn't as keen.
"This is so boring," Natsu moaned. "Why can't we just get something else to eat?"
"Come on, Natsu, it's a matter of lunch and death!" said Happy. "Don't you remember what Giladarts said? Fishing's about hunting and instincts and stuff! Take this a bit more seriously!"
"But why can't we get Willy to help us fish?" Natsu complained. "If he were here, we'd have fish in no time."
"That may be so, but Willy has his way of fishing, and we've got ours," Happy said. "Besides, if we did it his way, we'll scare away the fish. Particularly, you."
"Alright, alright. I'll try to keep it together," Natsu yawned. "You can count on me..."
But however much Natsu tried to keep himself awake, his attention span got the better of him, and he fell fast asleep, much to Happy's disdain.
Then suddenly, there was a loud clap of thunder that woke Natsu up with a start. He gazed upwards and saw a massive pillar of lightning off in the distance.
"What's the matter?" asked Happy.
"No doubt about it," Natsu spoke, standing to his feet while dropping his pole. "It's Laxus."
Happy was surprised. "What? Are you sure it's Laxus?"
"There's no mistaking it. I'm positive," Natsu said. "I was wondering where that jerk ran off to, but I didn't think he'd be around here."
"But didn't the Master banish him from the guild?" wondered Happy. "Unless he let him back in without us knowing about it."
Natsu then took off running. "I'm going to find out!" he called.
Happy followed after him. Not long after that, Gajeel appeared running alongside Natsu in the same direction.
"Gajeel? Where are you running off to, Metal Head?" Natsu asked, scowling.
"Where are you running too, Flame Head?" Gajeel countered gruffly. "It's none of your business."
"I asked you first, didn't I?!" Natsu snapped, now getting angry. "Besides, I can go wherever I want!"
"Then, so can I!" Gajeel snapped back. "So quit following me around!"
"I ain't following you, and you ain't going to follow me!"
"Who said I wanted to?! So get lost!"
The two sped up, neither one wanting to lose to the other nor wanting to be outdone, until they screeched to a halt, glaring at each other and growling like dogs.
"Come on, you guys. Cut it out already," chided Happy. "We need to go see what that random lightning strike was about, remember?"
"Happy, I already told you it was Laxus," Natsu barked. "So, I'm going to go and kick his ass!"
"Give me a break. You don't stand a chance in hell against him," Gajeel scoffed, chuckling. "The last time you fought him, he beat the ever-living crap out of you, even with me helping you."
"Shut up, Iron Head!" Natsu squawked crossly. "I didn't need your help back then, and don't need it this time! I'll beat him with my own two hands!"
"Not if I get to him, first!" Gajeel squawked back.
The two dragon slayers then raced away, each other wanting to get to Laxus before the other, leaving Happy toiling far behind.
WILLY'S POV
I was flying towards the East Forest, hoping to train as I always did. I felt a bit more cheerful now, and was looking forward to another workout and developing techniques with my water magic. But as I was about to land, there was a loud clap of thunder that startled me. I looked around in the sky, seeing that it was clear without a single cloud in sight, so I was sure that it wasn't a storm. Then in the distance, I saw a pillar of lightning that crackled and sparked shooting into the sky, of which I recognized upon seeing it.
"That lightning," I murmured to myself. "It seems familiar. Can it be?"
Feeling curious, I flew towards where the lightning originated. As I ventured closer, the lightning slowly began to dissipate, and I soon could see where it came from, or rather whom. Below me were two beings, one was Laxus who was standing tall, and still sparking with electricity, and the other was a certain forest gorian, now burnt to a crisp.
"Laxus. I might have known it would be you," I said, as I touched down on the ground. "I take it that gorian picked a fight with you?"
"Yup. More or less," Laxus said, dusting off his shirt. "Said something about wanting to kick my ass for payback for being on his turf, so I decided to give him a shock to remember."
"I'll give you credit on that one; you've certainly done that," I said, looking at the gorian in question. "And this guy's persistent, but never seems to learn his lesson, does he?"
The gorian then got up, managing to recover a bit, and scampered away into the forest, not wanting to stick around. As soon as it left, Natsu and Gajeel, along with Happy, came bursting out of the bushes.
"Haha! I got here first, Salamander!" Gajeel crowed victoriously. "Therefore, I get first dibs on Laxus!"
"Screw you, Gajeel! I'm the one who got here first!" Natsu barked. "So, I get to be the one to beat him up!"
"Who's beating who, again?" Laxus asked coldly.
Natsu, Gajeel, and Happy looked up, and when they saw Laxus, they were surprised.
"Oh, wow! It was Laxus, after all!" gasped Happy.
"You couldn't tell from the lightning, Happy?" I asked, raising a brow. "I mean, who else uses lightning magic?"
Then Freed, Bixlow, and Evergreen arrived.
"It would seem that Natsu and Gajeel are here," Freed said.
"And Willy, too," added Bixlow. "What's going on here?"
"Nothing's going on," replied Laxus gruffly. "I was just about to tell these two to quit acting so rowdy."
"I didn't know you lived out here, Laxus," Natsu pointed out. "Have you been living out here this whole time?"
Laxus glanced away. "I traveled around quite a bit, but I've been here for a while," he said. "Figured I'd settle down in here for a bit to train."
"Well, that's understandable," I said. "I mean, I've been training out here for a few days myself. Guess we've both had the same idea. Aside from living out here, that is."
Gajeel then smirked. "If you're this close, you should just come back to the guild already," he chuckled. "It's not like you've got anywhere else to go."
"And why should I?" Laxus asked coolly. "Have you been missing me?"
"I don't give a crap if you come back or not," Natsu scoffed, punching his fist into his palm. "But since we're all here, I think we should throw down and see who comes out on top!"
"Sounds good to me," agreed Gajeel. "I feel the same too."
"You've got to be kidding me. Those two are picking a fight this early in the afternoon?" I thought.
"Man, you guys want me to take the bait, don't you?" Laxus sighed, shaking his head. "Getting me riled up and ready to fight. Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you two, but it ain't going to happen. I've got better things to do."
He turned on his heel and started to walk away.
"You running away?" Natsu taunted. "I know you ain't the type to turn away from a fight, and you know it, Laxus! What's there to be scared of?"
"You'd best watch your tongue, Natsu," warned Freed.
"Yeah, Natsu. Quit with the taunting already," I chided. "Laxus doesn't want to fight you, so let it go already."
But Natsu and Gajeel refused to back down, both of them gazing directly at Laxus.
Laxus scowled, most annoyed, but then a smile replaced his scowl. "Okay. Fine then. You two asked for it."
"Now that's more like it," the fire and iron dragon slayers smirked.
"Sorry, but you're not laying a finger on him!" injected Bixlow.
"If you want to get to him, you'll have to go through the Thunder Legion!" added Evergreen.
"That's right! And as the Thunder Legion, we share the same fates with Laxus!" Freed proclaimed, comically crying with passion. "Therefore, all of our fates shall never again be torn asunder!"
"That's all noble and all, Freed, but why are you crying?" I asked. "It's nothing to get all emotional about."
"No. Need to for that," Laxus spoke, a predatory smile now crossing his features as he cracked his knuckles. "I'd love to teach these two clowns a lesson all by myself. Starting with you, Natsu."
"Sounds like fun to me!" Natsu grinned, who was just as eager.
The pink-haired fire dragon's fist ignited on fire, while Laxus' body began to crackle and spark with electricity, both their magic auras spiking. Knowing that a big fight was about to happen, I took a step back, not wanting to get in the way, but then we all heard a small voice call out.
"Wait! Hold on a second!"
Natsu and Laxus let down their magic auras, and they, along with the rest of us, looked up, only to find Wendy and Carla standing there just arriving on the scene.
"Wendy. Carla," I spoke, a bit surprised to see them.
"What do you mean?" wondered Natsu. "Why should we?"
"If you guys are going to go through with this fight, I feel as though it should be properly arranged first!" Wendy squeaked. "You know, make it a special occasion!"
"Arranged?" repeated Natsu. "I don't follow you."
"What are you talking about, kid?" questioned Gajeel.
"I think I know. If you all started duking it out here, then it's going to cause quite a bit of a ruckus," I said. "Not to mention that the whole forest could suffer from it. Natsu is pretty well known for destroying things when he fights."
"That's right!" Wendy said, pointing a finger. "So, I propose that the match should take place tomorrow!"
Natsu and Laxus stared at Wendy. Then Natsu agreed.
"Okay, then. You're not making any sense, but if you insist. I can wait one more day to kick his butt!" Natsu said to Wendy. He turned to Laxus. "Meet me under the big Sola tree at South Gate Park, tomorrow!"
"And when he's done, it'll be my turn," Gajeel added.
"Sounds good to me," Laxus said. "Either way, you better be prepared, because I have no intention of losing."
Laxus then turned on his heel and walked away along with the Thunder Legion.
The news about the fight soon reached the other members. I, myself, was over in the tavern drinking some water talking to the Strauss siblings, Kinana, Romeo, Macao, and Wakaba.
"So Laxus, Natsu, and Gajeel are going to fight tomorrow, eh?" Macao wondered. "Add that to the list of their bad decisions. Those two never learn."
"No, kidding," I agreed. "Then again, if Wendy hadn't intervened when she did, there would have been major trouble."
"And did anyone else know that Laxus was even around," wondered Romeo. "Apparently, he's has been living in the woods of Magnolia for a while."
"I'm more excited about the fight!" Elfman grinned. "Big-time fights are so manly! This is going to be the best one ever!"
"Shouldn't we be a bit more concerned about Gajeel and Natsu?" wondered Lisanna. "I mean, those two are going to get hurt."
"Oh, they're going to get hurt, alright," said Wakaba. "I would bet money they won't come out of this fight unscathed."
"Yeah. Laxus is someone I wouldn't want to go up against," said Mira. "Those two don't stand a chance against him."
"But Mira, aren't you an S-Class wizard yourself? Surely, you can take on Laxus if you wanted to," I suggested. "I mean, you are one of the strongest mages in Fairy Tail we've got."
"You're one to talk," chuckled Mira. "I'm surprised you're not joining in on the action too, Willy. After all, you have been training for the past few weeks."
"That may be so, but electricity isn't a good matchup for me," I said. "Besides, I'd rather be fighting with Laxus rather than against him."
"Is Laxus that much stronger against them?" wondered Kinana in amazement.
"Of course he is," Wakaba said. "Back when he used to be a member, I'd say the one who was more powerful than him was Gildarts."
"Gildarts, huh? Then he's one tough customer," I said, sipping my water. "It makes me wonder how Natsu and Gajeel are going to beat him?"
"All right then! As Master of this guild," Macao spoke excitedly. "I better get this party started!"
"Yeah! It'll be a fight party!" agreed Elfman eagerly. "The manliest kind of party there is!"
"That's a great idea! Let's turn this into something fun for everyone!" cheered Lisanna. "Get a chance to have some fun!"
"Alright!" everyone cheered.
Everyone else then left to spread the word about the party, leaving Mira, Kinana, and myself by ourselves. As I sat there, I let out a light chuckle.
"It figures that Fairy Tail would turn a fight into a celebration," I chuckled. "Then again, a party does sound nice."
"Doesn't it? It sure sounds like fun," said Mira. "I'd love to go myself, but knowing my reputation, I'll most likely be busy."
"Busy? With what?" I wondered.
"You know how it is," Mira said. "Whenever there's a big event going on, I'll probably be performing for some reason."
"You can't blame them, Mira,' Kinana smiled. "Out of all the girls in the guild, you're one of the most popular, especially when it comes to your singing."
"Oh, stop, Kinana. You're going to make me blush," Mira giggled.
"I didn't know you could sing, Mira," I said.
"Well, I used to sing to Elfman and Lisanna back when I was little," Mira said. "And back when you were gone, I not only grew popular as a model, but also a singer and a guitar player."
"Man, Mira. I knew you were talented, but not that much," I chuckled. "You're like a celebrity or something. I wish I could have heard you sing and play."
"Maybe you'll have your chance," winked Mira. "If I do end up playing tonight, you'll be in for a real treat. Which reminds me, I better get myself ready for tonight." She turned to Kinana. "You mind covering for me for a while?"
"Sure. No problem, Mira," replied Kinana.
Mira then exited the bar and went on her way.
Kinana then looked at me. "So Willy, are you going to go to the party too?" she wondered.
"Well, why not? It sounds like it could be fun," I said. "Besides, it'll be a good set up for the big showdown. Plus, Mira's going to be singing, so you can count on me being there to support her. I've never heard her sing before."
"Oh, you'll love it," Kinana said as she started cleaning a mug. "When Mira sings, her voice is like the tinkling of bells."
"Is that so? Then I suppose that's all the more reason to show up at the party," I said, finishing my mug of water. "Although, we did just came back after seven years, I wonder how many people will be showing up at the party?"
Later that night...
South Gate Park had dozens of people. Lots of food and game stands encircled the park, and colorful flags hung all around decorating the park.
"Guess that answers my question," I said to myself as I looked around. "But I never expected that people would be this interested in the fight."
I walked around, checking out the many stalls planning to get a bite to eat. Eventually, I got myself a candied apple and a smoked sausage. I started walking around again, when I saw Lucy, Natsu, and Happy. Natsu was enjoying a large drumstick, Happy was enjoying a fish, and Lucy was munching on some grilled pineapple.
"Hey there, you guys," I greeted. "I see you're enjoying the festival as well?"
"Yeah! Everyone's getting their party on!" Happy said. "Magnolia always knows how to throw the best parties!"
"And they have the best food too!" agreed Natsu as he took a big bite from his chicken.
"By the way, do either of you two know where Gray and Erza are?" I wondered. "I would've have thought that they would want to see the fight too."
"They both went out on a job last time I checked," Lucy said. "Something about taking back gold from some bandits."
Then suddenly, lights from a stage came on, and a familiar voice echoed throughout the park.
"COOL! COOL! COOOOOOL!"
I then looked up towards the stage and saw that the familiar voice belonged to Jason, the reporter from before, as he stepped out into the spotlight.
"Hold on a sec. Is that Jason?" I wondered incredulously. "How is he the same after these seven years? Doesn't he age at all?"
"I guess some people age better than others do," said Lucy. "Although it does seem a bit perplexing. Maybe I should ask him what his secret is."
"Long time no see everyone! It's your friendly neighboorhood reporter from Sorceror Weekly, whose back after all these years, Jason!" he spoke via microphone. "It's a reunion seven years in the making, and what a cool way to celebrate! A fight that is going to be the most insane, awesome fight in the history of fighting! ! !"
As everyone else cheered loudly, I couldn't help but chuckle, thinking about Jason being as energetic as he always was back when I first met him.
"But enough about that! It's time to bring the special guest that you've all been waiting for!" Jason continued. "A woman who's the very definition of beauty, a woman who's known as the eternal diva, and Fairy Tail's poster girl! Please give a warm welcome to the lovely and super talented, Miss Mirajane!"
The curtain then lifted, and standing behind it was Mira, who was wearing a beautiful yellow dress, a small flying microphone next to her, and had a bright red guitar strapped around her neck, giving it a strum as she waved.
"Are you boys and girls ready to rock?" Mira, giving all of us an energetic wink.
The crowd cheered louder than before, and could swear I hear Elfman and Lisanna amongst them.
"Bring it on, Big Sis!" Elfman yelled.
"Light up the stage, Mira!" Lisanna shouted.
Mira then turned apologetic. "Well, I hate to break it to you, but sadly my poor little throat's been feeling sore all day, so I'm afraid I won't be able to sing tonight."
The crowd all let out a collective groan of disappointment, but Mira reassured them with a friendly smile.
"But don't worry. I know someone that's got a lot of heart and soul to sung for you, instead," Mira said. "This singer's a true, one-of-a-kind performer that you've never seen before. Put your hands together for Fairy Tail's own, Gajeel Redfox!"
As Mira stepped aside, someone else appeared on stage that made my mouth hang open in disbelief. Sitting on a stool, now on stage was Gajeel, wearing a white suit with a hat and shoes matching, a pair of black sunglasses, and his guitar wrapped around his neck.
"Thank you so much, folks. I appreciate you all coming out to see me tonight," Gajeel spoke via microphone. "I'd like to start things off with a little ditty I wrote myself by special request. I call this one, "Best Friend." Here we go!"
Gajeel then began to sing, and when he started, I immediately started to feel a bit uncomfortable. I wasn't an expert when it came to listening to music, but Gajeel's singing was especially awkward and pretty bad. Like comically bad.
"Well, that's going to kill the mood for these people," I chuckled. "Oh, well. I suppose that's how the cookie crumbles. Now then, since I've got nothing else to do, I think I'll grab one more thing from the stands, and then I'll head home and get some sleep. I'll stop by at Sola Gate Park in time for the showdown tomorrow. Although, I'm still wondering about Mira and her throat. She seemed fine earlier this morning, so why would she say that her throat hurts?"
Then at that moment, someone covered my eyes surprising me, as a familiar voice spoke in my ear.
"Guess who, Willy?"
Recognizing the voice immediately, I couldn't help but smile. "Mira?"
My eyes were then uncovered and I turned around. Sure enough, it was Mira.
"Aw, darn. I was hoping you'd guess, Lisanna," Mira complained while smiling. "Then again, I'm not the prankster type like her."
"So what's this I hear about you having a sore throat?" I asked. "If it's bothering you then I could use a healing spell to fix you."
"That's very appreciated, Willy, but that won't be necessary," Mira said. "Besides, I want to have some fun right now, and I was hoping that you would join me."
"But what about your fans?" I wondered. "Aren't you worried that they're going to be all over you or something? Especially the boys?"
"You don't have to worry about that," Mira said. "Besides, they know well enough to give me some privacy. I am the She-Devil, after all. I may look cute, but I'm an S-Class wizard for a reason. So, what do you say?"
At first, I was going to tell Mira that I was going to go home for the night, but at the same time, I didn't want to turn her town, plus it wasn't every day that I got to see her dressed so nicely. So, after thinking about this for a few seconds, I nodded accepting her offer. "Alright then. Let's see how much fun we can have at this festival."
Mira then smiled. "Alright then! Shall we?"
"We shall," I said.
The two of us then spent the rest of the night together enjoying what the festival had to offer for us.
The great day arrived. Everyone was once again in the middle of South Gate Park eager to see the big fight happen. Crowds of people circled the entire park, not wanting to miss a single thing. On one side, Laxus was sitting in a chair with the Thunder Legion eyes closed appearing to be meditating, while Natsu stood bravely before him ready to throw down with Gajeel on the sidelines waiting his turn. I stood with the Strauss siblings in the crowd, waiting for the fight to begin as Jason got ready to commentate.
"COOL! This is it, folks! The moment you've been waiting for has arrived!" Jason crowed. "All three fighters are here and are ready to throw down! The tension is so thick; you can cut it with a knife!"
"Oh, man! This is going to be manly!" said Elfman. "So manly, that it'll go down in history!"
"Do your best, Natsu!" called out Lisanna. "Try not to get beaten up too badly!"
I, for one, didn't say anything. It wasn't like there was a side I could root for. I happened to glance over at Mira, and even she was feeling a bit tense about this fight, not saying anything either. Laxus' eyes then opened, got up from his chair and walked to the center of the park, and Natsu followed suit, the two squaring off.
"Laxus is standing up, and it looks like Natsu's getting the first crack at him!" Jason said, excitedly. "Get ready, folks! This fight's about to get started!"
"Hey, Natsu," Laxus called. "I thought I should warn you; I'm not going to hold back. You cool with that?"
"That's fine with me," Natsu said. "Give me everything you got!"
"Alright then," Laxus scowled. "But don't blame me if you end up losing your life."
Natsu's fist then ignited on fire as he flashed a confident and toothy grin. "I could say the same about you!"
Laxus' body began to crackle and spark once again as he geared up to fight too. Then both of their bodies exploded with their respective elements, their magic aura flaring up to the limit, causing the ground to tremble. The two gazed grimly at each other, neither one moving a muscle, and waiting for someone to attack first. Then, not wanting to wait any longer, and with a mighty roar, Natsu went on the attack, swing his fist right towards Laxus' face. But then Laxus attacked too, and in one single punch that was faster than anyone could track, he clocked Natsu square on the side of his face knocking him flat on the ground, defeating him in a manner of seconds.
There was a stunned silence, then Jason sounded the bell.
"T-K-O! Natsu was taken out in a single hit!" Jason cheered. "What an impressive display by Laxus! SO FREAKING COOL!"
"You've got to be kidding me," I said. "Natsu didn't last a second; neither did he land a single blow? Not even the enemies we fought could pull that off."
"Oh, well. I guess Laxus wins that round," Mira giggled. "Hopefully, Gajeel will put up more of a fight."
But then, to the surprise of us all, as we turned to where Gajeel stood, the Iron Dragon Slayer had mysteriously vanished.
"What the heck?!" I couldn't help but exclaim.
"He's gone!" Lisanna gasped.
Jason noticed this too, and was heedlessly excited. "Whoa! It looks like Gajeel just ghosted!"
"You mean that lousy coward just ran away?!" Wakaba squawked incredulously.
"What?! That can't be!" Pantherlily cried. "I always thought that you had the heart of a warrior, Gajeel!"
"Alright, you guys! Let's track him down!" Macao yelled to everyone. "Find him, and don't let him get away!"
"Hell yeah! It's a manhunt!" Elfman shouted enthusiastically. "That sounds so manly!"
A search party comprised of Macao, Wakaba, Elfman, Pantherlily, and all the other men in the park thundered away, leaving the rest of us stupified unsure of what to say at this point. The rest of the crowd, now no longer having a reason to stay, then dispersed, leaving only us Fairy Tail wizards behind.
Just then, Makarov arrived along with Wendy and Carla staring mainly at Laxus. When Laxus took notice of him too, he stared at the Master back, not saying a single word. As they did, I could that from the look in their eyes, that there was a sadness in each them, like they wanted to say something, but couldn't form the words to do it.
Now I that I thought about it, Mira told me about what Laxus did back in the Thunder Palace incident, which forced Master Makarov to banish him out of punishment. It led me to believe that those two were on rocky terms, especially since what Master wasn't the type of person to take things lightly when it came to protecting us even his own.
Then Laxus turned on his heel and started to walk away.
"Laxus, where are you going?" asked Bixlow. "Don't tell me that you're taking off again."
"Please! Come back to Fairy Tail!" begged Evergreen.
"Master, please allow Laxus to come back to the guild!" Freed pleaded to Makarov. "Hasn't his expulsion from the guild lasted long enough? Take him back!"
But Makarov still didn't say anything, as Laxus continued on his way, not saying anything either. Part of me wanted to say something, but another didn't know what to say, nor could I. When it came to those two, and considering that those two were family, it was probably for best for me not to say anything. But that didn't make me feel all the more sorry for Laxus.
Four hundred years ago, on a starry filled night, in the middle of a stone circle, a ceremony was taking place where lots of people were standing around bearing witness to it. In the middle of this, a large monument stood bearing resemblance to a large, majestic bird with a roaring firing in front of it, and two large circular stones on the left and right, each one containing halves of a small stone in the middle.
In front of this monument was a young girl who was dancing gracefully while twirling around in front of an elderly man dressed royal garb. The girl's hair was tied in the back, went all the way down her back, and wore a dress, tribal in origin, that was colored scarlet. She also wore golden bracelets around his wrists and ankles and a helmet with wings on both sides with feathers coming out the back.
Everything in the ceremony was going smoothly, but then, tragedy struck. Out from the shadows, numerous magic spears came shooting out impaling numerous people, killing them as a swarm of magic troops charged in. Many tried to flee for their lives, while others tried to defend themselves and the people using magic, but the death count only continued to grow.
The elderly man then grabbed the female dancer by the hand and rushed over to one of the halves of the stone. With a wave of his finger, he undid whatever spell was cast to protect and grabbed the stone. Then he embraced the dancer, about cast another spell when numerous spears impaled through his body, one managing to stab through the dancer's right hip in the process. However, in a great feat of willpower, the elderly man teleported himself along with the dancer, a great distance away from the chaos. They were safe from the time being, but the elderly man was heavily wounded on the brink of death. Knowing that he wouldn't last much longer, he gave the stone to her placing it into her hand.
"Listen carefully, Éclair," the elderly man rasped. "Take this stone, and go to the Boundary Forest. There, you will find the great wizard, Kalard. See that this stone meets his hands, and keep it safe with you always!"
Then with one final gasp, the elderly man falling to the ground, dead. The dancer who was identified as Éclair was fearful, but also not wanting to let the elderly man down. While managing to get back on her feet, she took off running as fast as her legs could carry her with the stone clenched tightly in her hand.
