Chapter 3: I am a God
The next morning Thomas got up early and made breakfast for everyone. Before he had gotten stranded in this alternate dimension he'd taken up cooking as a hobby to help him deal with the stress of the project and everything else going on in his life. It was nice, while it wasn't mindless it was a very controlled environment. Everything was measured and proportioned, it was almost scientific. It was something he could handle while dealing with some bigger thoughts or feelings. It helped him to get his mind off the stress at hand so he could deal with it later when he was ready. This morning Thomas made pancakes and bacon for the family and himself. "At least they mostly eat things that are normal for my dimension. I don't know what I'd do if everyone ate rocks or something." Thomas muttered to himself while cooking the bacon, dabbing the grease from the pan with a paper towel.
"And he makes brekkie…" Bandit said from behind Thomas.
Thomas turned and looked at the adult blue heeler. "Oh hey Bandit, I hope you don't mind me cooking for you and your family again for breakfast." Thomas said while putting the bacon on a plate beside the stove.
"I don't mind mate, it actually is a big help for Chilli and I." Bandit said, rubbing the back of his neck.
Thomas smiled with a nod. He hadn't forgotten his little conversation with Jonas, but he didn't want to let it bother him. Right now I need to figure out everything for myself. No point in rushing into a fight when I have no idea how to use anything, right?
"Hi Thomas!" Bluey said, wagging her tail while coming into the kitchen.
"Hi Thomas!" Bingo parroted while following her sister to the table. She inhaled as she sat down. "Ooh, it smells good."
"Thanks, I hope it's to your liking." He smiled as he brought over the plates. "How are you two this morning?" He said while balancing a stack of pancakes and carefully walking to the table.
"We're good!" Bluey said while sitting at the table with her sister. "I had a dream about flying in a space shuttle and landing on your planet where everybody is a human. It was weird, but fun!"
"That sounds like a good dream." He smiled, placing the food on the table, "Alright, I'm done with breakfast, hope you guys are hungry!" Thomas said, bringing over the utensils to the table.
A moment later Chilli joined her family and their new friend at the dining table. "This looks amazing sweetie thank you." Chilli said as she sat down at the table.
"You're welcome; I don't mind cooking for you guys from time to time. It actually helps me think." Thomas said before taking a fork and cutting a piece of his pancakes.
"Well, you are a good cook. Probably the bestest human cook I ever met." Bingo said while chowing down.
"Bingo, he's the only human cook we've ever met." Bluey rolled her eyes.
Thomas chuckled at that while eating.
After breakfast Chilli was gathering her things to get ready to drop off the girls, then go to work at the airport. "Bluey don't forget your permission slip for the zoo. Calypso needs to have it today, and every time I give it to you somehow it keeps ending up back here. Make sure to give it to her, otherwise you can't go." Chilli said just as she grabbed her purse.
"I won't forget mum!" Bluey replied as she grabbed the slip of yellow paper and met her mother and sister at the door.
"Good. Okay, we're off!" She announced as the girls departed. Now all who remained was Thomas and Bandit at home.
Thomas was washing the dishes and cleaning up in the kitchen while Bandit watched him as he sipped a cup of coffee and responded to a few emails from work at the dining room table. "I guess he's not so bad…" Bandit thought in his head. "He might be an alien, but he's civil, and a pretty good cook."
Thomas finished the washing, shutting off the water and drying his hands on a towel. He glanced over at Bandit and noticed the blue heeler was rubbing the back of his neck. "Is your neck hurting?" Thomas asked.
"Kind of… my back hurts the most." Bandit answered. "You try having two kids who play rough and you'll see."
Thomas wiped his hands a final time on the towel and then walked over to him. "Let me see if I can help." Thomas said as went behind Bandit.
"Oh! That's okay mate, really I'm fine!" Bandit said nervously as he watched the human approach. Because while he was relatively okay with Thomas, the kid still had powers he wasn't quite so sure about.
"Easy Bandit, I promise it's not going to hurt." Thomas said as he made his hands glow, a light lilac aura pulsing gently as he moved them apart.
"Hurt?!" Bandit said with his eyes wide. "Look mate, it's fine, I-" Thomas lightly pressed his hands on Bandits back. "Ah!… oh!" Bandit said as he felt the healing process. He could feel his back and shoulders relaxing as years of stress seemed to disappear. It was practically divine. I feel like a pup again… It was so good that the blue heeler hadn't even noticed that he'd started to drool as the calm feeling felt so good.
"Feeling better?" Thomas asked.
"Very much so mate." Bandit said with a smile, gently rotating his neck and shoulders as the light continued pulsing through.
"I know we got off on the wrong foot but thank you again for everything Bandit. I appreciate you taking the chance on me." Thomas said as he continued the light touch on his back.
Bandit continued to drool as his eyelids started to droop. "No problem mate…" Bandit said, nearly falling asleep from the release of stress he hadn't fully realized he'd been carrying. Thomas then stopped healing him, the glow slowly dissipating as he removed his hands from Bandit's back.
"How's that?" Thomas asked as Bandit stood up and felt his back.
"Mate, I've never felt so good! I feel like I'm ten years old again!" Bandit said with a smile. "Thank you Thomas."
"You're welcome, I'm glad I could help." Thomas said with a smile.
Bandit exhaled for a moment, "Look, I know I said no tricks or magic powers in the house, and I know you need to get a better handle on them…" Bandit said looking down from Thomas. "I know a place not too far from town that's abandoned where you could practice. If you want I can take you there, and I dunno, help if you need it…"
"Really? You would do that for me?" Thomas asked, surprised.
"Of course, mate. I can take you there now if you want, it's not too far of a drive. When I was a teen my brothers and I would sometimes go there to hang out. You'll just have to hide in the boot of my car on the drive there." Bandit said
"That's not a problem, that's how I got here anyhow. Bluey and Bingo had me hide under a blanket in the back." Thomas said with a chuckle.
"Yeah… we won't go there. Anyway mate, get what you need and I'll take you when you're ready." Bandit said as he grabbed his phone. Thomas nodded as he only grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.
"Alright I'm ready." Thomas said to Bandit.
"That's it?" Bandit asked, looking up from his phone.
"Hmm… well do you have any glass bottles?" Thomas asked.
"Actually we do, trash service only takes glass once a month so we end up getting a backup." Bandit said as he went and grabbed a bag full of them from the closet.
"Great!" Thomas said, taking the bag brimming with glass bottles.
"What do you need them for?" Bandit asked, slightly confused at the incongruous request.
"You'll see when we get there." Thomas said as they walked to the garage.
"Alright I'm trusting you on that one mate. No funny business, okay?" Bandit asked while helping Thomas into the boot of the car.
"No sir, I promise." Thomas said while hiding.
"Good." Bandit said as he closed the door to the back of his car. Bandit got in the front seat and started driving out of his garage and onto the road. He paused at the stop sign at the end of the cul-de-sac. "And you can just call me Bandit, kid. No more of that 'sir' stuff; I'm not a drill sergeant."
"Okay Bandit, thanks." Thomas replied,
It wasn't long after they made it out of the city and to the abandoned factory that Bandit had talked about. Once the car came to a stop Bandit got out and helped Thomas out of the back of the 4x4. "Here we are, mate." Bandit said as Thomas got out of the car. Thomas looked around and found himself beside a large brick building. While it was clear it hadn't been used in some time, the walls were all sturdy enough that it wouldn't be a hazard for them to be inside.
"This place is perfect!" Thomas said, looking at Bandit. "How do we get in?"
"Follow me." Bandit smirked as he walked along the wall of boarded up windows, then seemingly disappeared.
"Bandit?" Thomas glanced around.
The blue heeler poked his head out. "There's a loose sheet of plywood, come on."
Thomas followed and soon found himself in an empty room that had once been a factory floor. There were a handful of pieces of machinery dotted around, and more than a fair bit of graffiti-including one that Thomas was fairly certain bore Bandit's name dated from 1995, but otherwise it was a large, open space.
"So what did you need the glass bottles for?" Bandit asked, still confused about them.
"Oh, here I want you to throw them in the air as high as you can, away from you of course. I'm going to try and hit them." Thomas explained while walking a few feet away from Bandit.
"Alright, whenever you're ready mate." Bandit said, holding a brown bottle in his hand.
Thomas closed his eyes and focused his energy. Thoughts of Jonas hurting those dogs and fear of him finding the Heelers entered his mind. Thomas knew he would stop at nothing to stop Jonas from hurting others and putting more innocents in danger. "Ready!" Thomas said, opening his eyes. It was clear he was psyching himself up more than he'd done before. The light now infused itself around him and through him. He could feel it radiating from his palms and tingling on his face. What he didn't know was that now even his eyes were glowing two different colors as the power coursed through him.
Bandit recognized those eye colors and it gave him chills. Could it be… no, it couldn't… Bandit shook himself out of his thoughts and threw the bottle in the air. Thomas's eyes shot a beam of cosmic energy at the bottle, quickly blasting it out of existence. But this time it hadn't come out of his hands. Bandit was shocked to see such power.
Thomas paused a moment, as he didn't know he could do that with his eyes, before he steadied himself. "Ready?" He asked, checking if Bandit was good to go. The blue heeler nodded in assent. "Again!" Thomas shouted. Bandit nodded and threw another bottle. Thomas blasted it with his hands this time. Bandit threw a few more bottles and Thomas shot them with his cosmic blasts, some from his hands, others from his eyes. After a while Thomas tried his force fields and then his telekinesis.
"Are you sure about this mate? I don't want to hurt you…" Bandit said nervously.
"If anything happens I'll heal myself, no worries." Thomas said, getting ready.
"Alright I warned you." Bandit said as he threw a bottle at Thomas as hard as he could.
The green glass stopped, its movement halted as Thomas held out his hand. He had it float for a little bit before he threw the bottle against the far wall, the tinkling of glass echoing through the room.
"Woah!" Bandit said in shock.
After a few more throws Thomas and Bandit sat down at a bench and relaxed. Thomas took a swig from the water bottle he'd brought.
"That was… fun!" Bandit said wagging his tail. "Absolutely, undeniably insane, but fun!"
"Yeah? It was nice being able to have control of everything for once, thanks Bandit." Thomas said with a smile while looking over at the blue heeler.
"You're welcome so- I mean Thomas." Bandit said, quickly cutting himself off. He looked away from the human, embarrassed.
"Is something wrong Bandit?" Thomas asked, looking at him.
"Mate I…" Bandit was about to speak until his phone rang. "Sorry, it's my brother. Gimme a sec." He explained to Thomas before he answered."Hello? Stripe? Hold on mate, slow down, what's going on?" Bandit said, now listening to his little brother. "What?!" Bandit shouted as he stood up.
Thomas was more than a little confused by what was going on and listened in, as best he could understand something bad was happening, but he wasn't sure what. A moment later Stripe had texted Bandit two links. Bandit opened the first link of the horrible event that happened at the convenience store last night. Bandit stared at the screen, dumbstruck as he watched the events unfold.
"My name… is Jinx… and this world… is mine!" Jinx shouted just as the video cut out.
"Jonas…" Thomas whispered.
"There's another one of you?" Bandit asked looked at Thomas with something bordering on betrayal in his voice.
"Bandit, look, Jonas-he isn't a bad person but something has corrupted him… When we crossed into here something happened to him." Thomas explained.
"A bad person?! A bad person robs a convenience store. This guy, he fucking killed a kid mate! A teenager! Someone's child!" Bandit shouted before looking back at his phone and opening the other link, his fingers trembling slightly.
It was a live feed to Australia Zoo just a few minutes north of Brisbane where Bluey and her class were taking their field trip. It was clear something had happened, as there were bits of debris strewn across the pathway and what Bandit hoped was an unconscious body draped over a stand that had stuffed toys. There were barely audible shouts in the background as the camera feed died. "No…" Bandit said with his heart sinking in his chest, he tried flicking to one of the other feeds on the website, but they all showed nothing but static or an error message.
"Bluey…" Thomas said, realizing his friend was in danger. Without discussion Bandit stowed his phone and ran to the car, quickly starting it. Thomas got into the car with him, he jumped into the front seat with Bandit not caring if anyone were to see him. This was an emergency and Thomas would stop at nothing to stop Jonas-or Jinx if he wanted to be called that-even if it meant he had to risk his life to save Bluey.
They peeled away from the factory and quickly merged onto a highway that lead into Brisbane. Bandit floored the 4x4 and pulled out his phone as the car sped down the asphalt. He quickly tapped at the screen a moment until the phone started dialing. After a moment it went to voicemail.
"Hello, you've reached Calypso's voicemail. Sorry I can't answer, but leave a message and I'll get back as soon as I can."
"Shit," Bandit muttered as he hung up. He'd hoped that the teacher would've answered, that somehow things would be fine and his daughter would be safe.
"Look, they've got to be okay. Maybe they got out before it all started?" Thomas said hopefully.
Bandit didn't respond, but it was clear whatever the situation, there was nothing that was going to stop him from getting to that zoo and trying to save his daughter. The next few minutes passed by in silence as the orange 4x4 merged from one highway onto a larger one that circled the city. "Fuck!" Bandit slammed on the brakes as the car narrowly avoided smashing into a sedan in front of it. From the entry ramp onward it was solid traffic. "What the hell?! It's two in the fucking afternoon, why is there so much traffic?!" He clenched the steering wheel. Bandit glanced at his phone's navigation app which now was updating his route time.
"Current route time estimated arrival unknown. Highway shut down from exit 32 onward due to police presence handling an ongoing event." The device reported.
Bandit growled and resisted the temptation to slam the phone into the dash. He gripped onto the steering wheel and released a slow breath before his eyes started watering.
"Woah, hey, Bandit…" Thomas said, reaching out to try and comfort the dog beside him.
Bandit raised his hackles as he pulled away, tears now streaming down him
"Bandit, I'm-"
"And don't talk to me either. I have nothing to say to you."
Thomas was stunned. He took a moment to collect his thoughts before he replied, "I'm sorry I didn't tell you about Jonas, when you first found me I thought he'd died in the crash. It wasn't until that first night that I had a dream about him draining the life out of two dogs that I even had a thought he was alive, and even then I thought it was just a nightmare until I saw it on the news…" Thomas paused, but Bandit hadn't made any acknowledgement of his speech. "Last night he reached out to me and he said he wanted to take over this world by any means necessary, I tried to reason with him but he wouldn't listen to me. That's why I got that nosebleed. This isn't the Jonas I know, something went wrong when we crossed through, now he's all wrong…"
Bandit continued looking forward.
"Jonas was the only friend I had when I was a kid. I was ten when my parents moved to DC. They were both working on the project and because I was 'gifted' they homeschooled me, they figured I'd be too far ahead in regular school. As a result I never really got a chance to make many friends. Jonas lived across the street from us and he was okay with me for who I was. We were both friends, we were inseparable. After my parents died he was there for me, he got me through a lot of tough days. But that isn't who I saw in that video, or who talked to me in my head last night. Jonas would never do something like this."
Thomas continued, "He was weird sometimes, but not a sociopathic monster. I'm sorry I didn't tell you when I first had contact; I didn't want to get you involved. I figured if I didn't tell you it would protect you, you wouldn't have to worry about it-that I could handle it on my own. Please understand that I want to get there and stop him. Right now you all are the closest thing I have to a family and I don't want anything to happen to any of you."
Bandit was quiet before he hoarsely replied, "I can't lose another one. Thomas, I can't…"
"You won't. We'll get there, we'll make sure Bluey's okay. Somehow…" Thomas looked, they were boxed in by traffic on all sides and there was no way to pull off of the highway and double back, as there were tall concrete barriers along the sides of the road.
Bandit slumped over the steering wheel and placed his head in his hands.
We can't just give up, I need to do something! Thomas clenched his fists as he felt his body shiver. I'm not going to just let her get hurt or killed. Come on Thomas! Do something! Thomas slammed his head into the dash in frustration. A moment later he felt his stomach drop as the 4x4 fell a few feet and slammed into the ground, the airbags deploying at the impact, smashing the two passengers back into their seats.
"Oof!" Bandit shouted as cracked his neck and pushed away the cushion of air. "What happened? Did we get rear ended?"
"No…" Thomas replied, looking out over the deflating airbag in front of him. In front of the two was not a line of traffic. Instead there was a set of gates with the words "Australia Zoo" written above them in gold.
Bandit's tears of sorrow changed to joy. "You-you got us here? How?"
"I… I don't know." Thomas uttered.
"Come on, we've got to find her!" Bandit shouted, unbuckling himself as he flung the door open. He paused for a moment at the threshold. "Watch your step; we seem to have landed on top of what was a minivan." After clambering down, the two raced toward the zoo entrance. There were no police or military present, so it was likely that they were currently holding a perimeter around the location until they decided to enter. "Cameras are all dead, we'll have to search to try and find her." Bandit stated as they came through the main entrance.
"Any ideas where they might be?" Thomas asked.
"Calypso probably got the kids indoors to try and keep them safe." Bandit commented as he glanced at a park map. "There's the aviary, the monkey house, and the reptile room. Reptiles are closest, let's start there." He charged forward across the tan concrete walkway, trying not to notice the number of dogs lying on the ground not breathing, and desperately trying to convince himself that the smaller ones were just short adults.
(Earlier)
The reptile room was a popular exhibit at the zoo, and up until the screams had started Bluey had been having a great time with her friends looking at the different animals. Calypso had herded the twenty-odd kids from place to place, and the reptile exhibit was supposed to be the last one that they visited before lunch at the picnic area near the gift shop.
"Look kids, we have a python here." Calypso pointed at a large snake behind a glass wall.
"I don't like snakes, Calypso." Honey said from the back of the group.
"That's okay Honey, but we need to remember that all animals have an important role to play in their ecosystem, even if they might be a little off-putting for you to look at." She glanced at the time on her phone before stowing it back in her backpack, "Now that we've finished with reptiles we're going to have some time for lunch. Everyone, buddy up." She turned to lead the kids out of the doors back to the main pathway through the zoo when a man burst through them.
"Everyone run! There's some alien thing attacking people with electricity by the giraffes!" He shouted.
Calypso furrowed her brow, "Sir, there are children present. Please don't make up stories to try and scare them."
"Lady, I promise you I'm not making this up." The lab pulled out his phone and showed a brief video clip. While Bluey and the others couldn't see it, they could tell whatever was on it had upset Calypso.
"Children, we're going somewhere safe to hide." She looked around, spotting what she needed. There were a set of restrooms off the main reptile room, and in the middle was a family restroom. "Follow me, everyone with your buddy, come on."
Bluey watched as the man exhaled and ran out the doors. A moment later they'd all crowded into a small dimly-lit restroom. Calypso had locked the door and barricaded it with the trash can as best as she could, placing herself in front of the door with the children clustered behind her, the youngest in the back.
"Calypso, why are we in the dunny?" Snickers asked.
"Yeah, it smells funny in here." Chloe complained.
"Children right now there is something dangerous going on and we need to stay quiet and hide here until its safe." The Australian Shepherd stated firmly.
"How will we know it's safe?" Bluey asked.
"I'm not sure." She admitted. "But for now we need to have patience and be ready."
(Back to the Present)
As the two ran toward the reptile house Thomas started to get a headache. It felt like TV static blaring in his brain. After a moment he heard a familiar voice. "Thomas, I figured you'd show up."
Thomas scowled and thought back, "Jonas, this isn't you. You don't want to do this. All these people you've hurt, you've killed. This isn't who you are. Please stop."
"No thanks. Sort of busy gaining the power I need to conquer this pathetic excuse for a city before I start my global conquest of these lowly freaks." He snickered, the sound grating against Thomas' mind. "Gotta go 'Titan', there's some kids hiding in a bathroom and I'm looking for a top-off."
They were still half-way across the zoo from the reptile house. Before Bandit could say anything Thomas grabbed his arm and thought as hard as he could about the reptile house, hoping he could manage to teleport again. It worked, and a moment later they appeared with a pop to a terrifying sight. Jinx had already disintegrated the door to the restroom, leaving the class cornered in the small space. Calypso was doing her best to put on a brave face-pushing as many of the kids behind her as she could-but it was clear that the only reason that they were still alive was that Jinx was toying with them before he decided to end them.
He turned when he heard the pop. "Ah, Thomas. How's my be-
"This isn't you Jonas, please, stop…" Thomas begged.
Jinx's eyes glowed yellow as a red flickering light started darting around him. "That isn't my name! I am Jinx! I am a god compared to these worthless canine freaks! I am going to conquer this pathetic world and there's nothing you can do to stop me!"
"Try me." Thomas shot across the room and pulled up a force field, pinning Jinx to the wall. "Get them out of here, now!" He shouted to Bandit. The blue heeler complied. He ran over and grabbed some of the smallest students before running out of the building, Calypso following his lead she guided the rest of the class out. A moment later Jinx threw off the force field and pushed Thomas back, knocking him into a display panel which shattered glass down on him as it crumpled.
"Thomas!" Bluey shouted, Calypso reaching back to grab her as she charged back to see if he was okay.
"No! Bluey!" Thomas shouted, but it was too late. Jinx grabbed the girl and hoisted her up.
Jinx's face curled into a sickening grin, "You care for this girl, don't you Thomas?" He held her aloft like a prize at a fun fair. He cracked into a sinister smile as he started applying pressure to her throat. Bluey writhed in his hands, kicking and clawing in vain as she started turning flush from lack of air.
"Put her down!" Thomas said, standing up.
"Ah-ah." Jinx tutted. "Not so fast. You make any move and she's gone. I could drain her, but I think snapping her tiny little neck would be more fun. After all, she doesn't even have a life worth living, being the pathetic creature she is."
"Why are you doing this? Let her go, she never did anything to anyone! She's a child!"
"So? I've already gone through a couple dozen of these freaks; you think I care about what age they are?" Jinx scoffed as Bluey gasped.
At that moment Thomas felt a rage inside him that he couldn't describe. When he lost his parents he never thought he'd get a chance again to have someone love him unconditionally, and while it had only been a few days, it was clear to him that Bluey did love him like a brother. Now with that threatened…
Jinx flinched as he felt something hit him, then something else, then something else. Within a moment it felt like he was getting bombarded with thousands of tiny, hot needles. He jerked and released the girl, not caring at that point. He scowled as he looked at Thomas, his eyes glowing.
"I am a god Thomas, and I will have my way." He sneered as he was surrounded by red static, disappearing into a red mist.
"Bluey!" Thomas shouted, running over to the girl. He quickly checked for breathing, then a pulse. She had neither. "No… Bluey, come on!" Thomas crossed his hands in front of him and started chest compressions. As he did so purple light flooded from his palms and into the blue heeler. After a few firm compressions she coughed, then gasped, opening her eyes.
"Oh thank God…" Thomas pulled her into a hug.
"Thomas…" Bluey rasped.
Before she could say more a man shouted. "Freeze alien! We have you surrounded!" The police had arrived.
"I have to go. Are you going to be okay?"
Bluey nodded. A moment later a dozen men in body armor stormed the room to find nothing but a little girl sitting on the cracked floor.
By that evening the news had reported a number of different versions of the story. Some did mention that there were two humans, but those that did often labeled Thomas as an attacker alongside the alien warlord Jinx. A few of Bluey's classmates, and Calypso had testified that Thomas had protected them, but at present the story was muddled. All that was clear was that at the moment Brisbane was on lockdown with the military and police doing sweeps to locate and capture the aliens for further questioning.
But more importantly, all the Heelers were home safely. Thomas had finished properly healing Bluey after she'd arrived home, along with Bandit, who after the adrenaline wore off had had some nasty whiplash from the airbag going off. It had been a quiet evening, with Thomas quickly retreating to the guest room, almost certain that with everything that happened he would be thrown out, if not handed over to the police. After all, if it wasn't for me Bluey wouldn't have had that happen to her…
He was brought out of his thoughts by a knock on the door. It was Bandit. "You okay to talk?"
Thomas nodded. "Yeah." He patted a spot on the bottom of the bed. Bandit sat down on it and faced the wall opposite, looking away from Thomas. "I'm sorry about what happened today, it's my fault Bluey was grabbed. If you want me gone, just tell me, I promise I won't cause you any more trouble."
"Thank you Thomas."
"Thank you?" Thomas repeated back Bandit's words, he wasn't sure he'd heard them correctly.
"Yes, thank you. You saved her life today."
"Not until after she almost died because of me."
"Her running back was her choice, but you saved her-and 23 other kids and her teacher." Bandit paused. "Earlier I said I couldn't lose another one…"
"Yeah." Thomas replied.
"Chilli and I, we had a hard time getting pregnant. Chilli's family has a lot of problems with fertility. When we had Bluey it was a miracle. It was the happiest accident of my life. After her we wanted to try for another, and so we did…" Bandit choked back a sob, "We had a boy we named Baxter who never made it. He was 21 weeks when the doctor said there wasn't a heartbeat… Chilli, she fell apart. I, I didn't know what to do. We went to counseling, and eventually we had Bingo, but it still sticks with us."
Thomas was quiet a moment, "I'm sorry… I can't imagine what it was like."
"That's alright, you don't have to. Thomas, today you saved my daughter's life. You saved my life." Bandit turned toward the human. "I don't care what you are, as far as I'm concerned you're a Heeler." He stood up and walked over to Thomas, tightly embracing him in a hug.
Thomas found himself speechless as he returned the gesture. "…Thank you." He eventually managed. "I promise I'm going to get Jinx, because no one hurts my family."
