Ariana reads this whole supplies list in Greek. She doesn't know how, but apparently Dumbledore knew a spell that could translate words to Greek.
'I need to learn that spell." Ariana tells herself.
The first place Ariana and Dumbledore head to is a book shop named Flourish and Blotts. There were shelves stacked to the ceiling with a large assortment of books. As they were getting her school books there was one book in there that Ariana could read. It was called Ancient Runes of History by Alexander Harold. Dumbledore allowed her to get that one book saying "I expect you to take the Ancient Runes class now when that subject is offered to you."
The next place they stopped was the cauldron shop. Dumbledore only allowed her to get a regular cauldron and a collapsible telescope.
Then they went to the Apothecary. Ariana almost decided to walk back out due to the smell, but she decided to suffer through for 5 minutes. Although Dumbledore told her that the smell was to much for an old man like him to handle and he stayed outside.
After she had gotten her potion ingredients they went to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Ocassions. When she walked into the shop she noticed Madam Malkin was a squat, smiling witch dressed all in muave.
"I'm here for my Hogwarts robes." Ariana told her.
"Alright dear. I have two others also being fitted for their robes right now."
When Ariana walked to the back of the shop she saw two girls each standing on their own footstool with a witch each pinning up their long black robes. One had brownish blonde hair with blue eyes while the other had red hair and blue eyes. Madam Malkin tells her to stand on a footstool, so she does.
"Hello."
Ariana looks up and notices the one with red hair greeted her.
"Hi." Ariana respond back.
"Are you going to Hogwarts too?" The red hair girl ask her.
"Yes."
The girl nods.
"I'm Isabella Rosier. That is Sophia Loughty."
The girl named Sophia smiles at Ariana.
"I'm Ariana. Nice to meet you."
"Are you excited for your first year of Hogwarts?"
"I don't really know what we're going to be doing besides magic."
"That's all right my parents told me that you get into a pattern really quickly there. They also told me about the Quidditch matches, the House cup, and lots of other cool things that they did also."
Ariana didn't know what Quidditch or the house cup was, but she would have to ask Professor Dumbledore.
"I honestly can't wait for third year when we can go to Hogsmeade that will be really fun."
"Hogsmeade?"
"Oh you don't know about Hogsmeade. Sorry. That's the village next to Hogwarts where third years and above can go on certain weekends and visit. You can go almost anywhere there you want."
"Oh."
"Besides the Shrieking Shack though. Have you not heard rumors about the ghost and howls that come from that building." Sophia, the quieter of the two, mentions.
"Please that's just a myth."
Ariana smirks to herself thinking about how what most people consider myths, is her everyday life. Before Ariana can comment that the myth might be real Madam Malkin finishes her robes.
"I'm done with you, dear. Have a good day."
Ariana says bye to Isabella and Sophia before walking out the door. Behind her she hears Isabella shout something and when she looks back she sees Sophia waving.
She meets back up with Dumbledore who had gotten lemon drop ice cream while she was inside.
"Professor what is Quidditch?"
"It is a sport wizards play. It is played in the air on broomsticks and there's four balls. There's the Quaffle, the bludgers, and the snitch. Each have a different purpose in the game."
"Ok, what is the house cup then?"
"Hogwarts is divided into four houses. Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. The houses compete for the most points throughout the year, and whoever has the most points in the end of the year wins."
"How do you get points?"
"Behavior, good deeds, if you do well in class the professors will sometimes reward you. Oh. Here is our last stop."
Ariana looks up to see a shop. The building itself was narrow and shabby, and the gold letters on the door read Olivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C. There was a single wand on a faded purple cushion on the old window. As Ariana stepped inside a bell rang. She looked up to see there was a bell on the door.
"How are you today ma'am?" a soft voice said to her. Ariana jumped and was about to activate her birthday weapon when an old man walked to the counter. His wide, pale eyes shined like moons through the gloom of the shop.
"I'm good. Thank you." Ariana did politely. And yes she did no how to be polite, Chiron raised her right.
"Ah, Ms. Potter. I knew you would come one day. You have your father's hazel eyes you know, but I've heard you look just like your mother. Who I've never had the privilege of meeting."
Ariana scowls briefly at the mention of her mother. One birthday present could not make up for everything she had done. "How do you know about my mother."
Olivander smiles at her. "I am an old man who has heard and seen many things in my lifetime. Gods included."
Ariana stares at him.
"Enough talking. I believe you are here for your wand."
"Yes sir."
He observes Ariana for a moment. "Your father favored a mahogany wand. Eleven inches. Pliable. A little more power and excellent for transfiguration. Your father favored it, but it's really the wand that chooses the wizard."
Olivander pulled a long tape measure with silver markings out of his pocket. "Which is your wand arm?"
"I'm right handed sir."
"Hold out your arm."
Ariana does as told. Olivander measures form her shoulder to her finger, then wrist to elbow, shoulder to floor, knee to armpit, and round his head.
He explains to Ariana about wands while he measures. "Every Olivander wand has a core of a powerful substance. We use unicorn hairs, phoenix tail feathers, the heartstrings of dragons, and in very special circumstances we use other things.
"Like involving the gods." Ariana hears Olivander mutter.
Ariana notices the wand that is measuring from her ear to her neck is doing this on its own. While this was happening Olivander was searching through shelves, taking down boxes.
"Alright this will do." Olivander announces.
The tape measure disappears.
"Try this Ms. Potter. Willow and unicorn hair. 11 inches. Very flexible."
Ariana takes the wand and stands there with it loosely in here hand.
"Well go on give it a wave."
Ariana waves the wand once when she hears the glass shatter behind her. Olivander snatches the wand out of her hand.
"Wrong wand. Try this one. Maple and dragon heartstring. 7 inches. Pliable."
Ariana waves this wand and nothing happens. Olivander snatches the wand away.
"How about this. Beechwood and phoenix feather. 8 inches. Very pliable."
She tries this one, and the next one, and the one after that. The pile just keeps getting bigger. Olivander is searching in each part of his shelf when he notices something.
"Oh dear. I almost forgot I had this one. Try this one my dear. Willow. 8 1/2 inches. Supple. The most shocking part about this wand is it's core is a peacock feather. I do not know the history around this wand, but considering your mother, this wand should work."
Ariana barely even took the wand before a breeze came through the window. This breeze smelt like lotus flowers.
Olivander smiled. "Very good my dear. I should have know that one would work."
"Wait. How do you know this one is mine?"
"The lotus flower is sacred to your mother is it not."
"Well yes but.."
"Then this one is most certainly yours."
"What if I don't want this wand?"
"Is it because it is connected to your mother?"
I scowl and look down. "Maybe." I mumble.
Olivander looks at me softly. "I don't know what your relationship with your mother is, and I do not have the right to know. Just know that the wand chooses the wizard Ms. Potter and I am sure that you will do great things with your wand."
I don't talk much for my remainder of time in that building. I pay, I thank him, and then I leave.
When Dumbledore looks at me he smiles. "Ready to go back to camp?"
