Chapter 06: Reason
His announcement made her feel even more hollow. So — he meant to whisk her away not only from the man she was supposed to marry, but also from the only place she knew and the people she loved.
"Why can't I stay here, in the village?" She asked.
He hesitated to respond.
"I am needed at home," he finally said. "I have been away from it for too long."
Then, go home, Kagome spat inwardly. "Why can't I stay here?" She repeated.
"You are carrying my child. I will not be separated from him — or her." Then, as though he sensed her unwillingness to follow, he added: "And, yet another reason: Inuyasha."
He did not have his hand on any of his swords but he might as well press a blade against her throat. Kagome felt each word like a physical punch to her gut.
She understood him without any explanations.
"Will you kill him?" She asked, her voice nary above a whisper.
It was so quiet, the sounds of the breeze whistling through the trees were loud in comparison, rivalling the roaring in her ears.
"If it comes down to it, yes," he finally answered. "But— that is entirely up to you, Miko."
