You and Me After All
Chapter 08: Stand Down
As he had told her, he waited at the village — just at the outskirts of it. His inner beast pawed at him incessantly, impatiently, but he tamped it down with the ruthlessness he should have employed earlier.
The miko came out from beyond the trees. The ruined garb, clinging to her form as best as it could, was a stark reminder that made him wince inwardly.
She stopped in her track the moment she saw him, her wariness palpable in her posture and the flickering of her blue eyes before the sooty lashes shielded them from his view.
"I can do this on my own," she said.
Her eyes were cast down, but he could feel the anger roiling off her in waves.
"I told you," he said. "Leave Inuyasha to me."
"And I told you," she gritted between clenched teeth. When she looked up, those eyes flashed with anger and hatred.
Ah. There they are.
"I can do this on my own," she continued. "I want to do this on my own."
He was not accustomed to being told what to do. He was much more familiar to giving orders — not following them.
But, considering what had taken place between them, what he had put her through, he made himself stand down.
As long as she came with him in the end.
"Suit yourself," he said, stepping aside to let her enter the village.
