Chapter 09: Protect
Without any more words, Kagome walked past Sesshōmaru, entering the boundary of the village. Each step felt like the stab of a knife through her foot. By this point, she had no doubt the winds had carried her scent to the interior of the village.
It was only a matter of time before Inuyasha scented her.
As predicted, he came running even before she was halfway through to his hut.
"Kagome! Kag—"
The first sight of her shredded clothing stopped him in his track. Face paled, he looked as though he refused to believe it. His head lifted high to sniff the air.
"Kagome. What did he do?"
She thought she could do this, but a lump clogged her throat and her eyes were filled with tears. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
It hurts to even try.
But Inuyasha and his hanyō senses needed no explanation. Water did little to erase the scent of blood and violation. Then, those golden eyes changed focus, glaring past her. Even without turning, she knew Sesshōmaru was coming up behind her.
Inuyasha snarled. Lips pulled back to reveal his fangs, he charged forward in a flash. Fully intent on avenging her honour, he passed her without stopping, at the ready with his Sankon Tessō.
Kagome whirled around. If she could not be with Inuyasha, the least thing she could do was protect him.
