Chapter 17: Realm
"What do you mean — a realm very different from here?" Kagome asked, taken aback.
He looked at her again. "I came from the yōkai realm, which runs parallel to the human world. All yōkai do, centuries ago. Some chose to stay with the humans, but the knowledge of the yōkai realm had long been forgotten, and now only remembered as legends. And we prefer to keep it that way."
"And… you own a dwelling… in this yōkai realm?"
He nodded. "An estate that belonged to my mother's father and all the inu daiyōkai generations before him."
An estate. Kagome chewed her lower lip. She had often suspected that Sesshōmaru came from aristocracy, though he had never once confirmed it.
Truth be told, he had never been forthcoming with anything, really.
"And what will my position be there?" She asked. "Your concubine?" Angrily, she spat: "Your whore?"
He seemed surprised at first, his eyes widening so very slightly. Then, before long, his eyes flickered with the suppressed cold fury that matched hers.
"I do not keep whores," he said; the voice coming out of his mouth was nearly a hiss. "That was more my father's pastime than mine."
An ugly sneer escaped her. "Oh, right. I forgot that raping women is your preferred pastime."
Left with no recourse, he turned away, and she held on to that little victory like a lifeline.
