Martin couldn't bring himself back to his feet. He rested on his knees and continued to stare at the rubble of the building still not believing. Voltess was gone. The sound of a high powered engine roared in the air. Martin turned his head to see the familiar vehicle that Batman was known to drive around the city. The tires came to a screeching halt as Martin recognized Gordon's own car pulling just behind the Batmobile.
The hatch opened up to the Batmobile and the masked vigilante quickly hopped out. Gordon and Blake quickly emerged from their vehicle and ran to their fellow officer.
"Martin! Are you alright?" Gordon asked the man. The detective nodded numbly.
"Where's Voltess? I see her board but I don't see her." Blake asked as he looked around.
Martin shook his head, "She didn't get out in time...she's gone." He muttered. Blake's eyes widened and he turned his head to Batman. Even through the cowl he could see the heartbreak, denial, and grief currently on the masked man's face.
"That's not possible." Batman muttered. Martin looked over to Batman with a solemn look.
"I didn't see her make it out…and she didn't respond to me calling her. I know she was more than just your partner. I'm sorry." Batman's hands molded into fists and his jaw clenched. His grief currently overlapped with the rage building inside him. Joker was going to pay.
3 Days Earlier…
No One's P.O.V
Bruce's eyes opened to a view of the ceiling fan spinning above him. The events of the day prior slowly came back to him. Joker. Just the mention of that name made his blood boil. Saving that woman last night brought him back to all those years ago. So many people lost their lives that week. Including Rachel's. Bruce thought he had passed the anger and mourning for Rachel's lost life but it was still there. He was so focused on those emotions that he closed himself off again. Well…almost.
Bruce turned his head to the side to see Melody facing him with her eyes closed. Her lips slightly parted and he could see her shoulders move as she took deep even breaths. He didn't have someone like Melody back then to help with that pain, anger, and grief. Rachel might be gone, but Melody is right here and alive.
Bruce turned to his side to face Melody. A smile made its way on his face as he watched her sleep. His eyes trailed down her naked torso taking in the image of the woman he loved. His eyes focused on the many scars that adorned her body. She was self-conscious of her scars and because of them she hated wearing any clothing that could reveal them. He, however, loved her scars. It meant she had been through tough situations and pulled through in the end. Melody is quite possibly the strongest woman he's ever known.
Bruce had come to a realization during last night. He had become so accustomed to having Melody in his life now. It's what he looked forward to when he was coming back home after a night out as Batman. He knew she'd be in bed asleep when he'd return or the occasional times she had stayed up and waited in the cave for him. He couldn't imagine his life without her anymore. When he imagined what his future looked like; he couldn't see one without her standing by his side.
Bruce raised his hand and gently ran his fingers through her blonde hair. He tucked the blonde locks behind her ear before trailing his fingers down her jawline. He felt her move slightly and noticed her icy blue eyes starting to open.
Melody's P.O.V
I was woken up by the feeling of something going across my face. My eyes fluttered open to see Bruce laying on his side and looking at me. He had a loving smile on his face and I felt his hand cup my cheek.
"Morning." He said softly. His thumb made small strokes on my cheek.
"Morning." I said back. I placed my hand on top of his and lightly gripped it. He removed his hand from my cheek and wrapped it around my waist. He easily pulled me towards him. I rested my hands against his bare chest and I felt him give a loving kiss on my forehead.
"What time is it?" I asked with grogginess still in my voice.
"That doesn't matter." I tiredly rolled my eyes as Bruce placed another kiss on my cheek.
"It does because I missed work yesterday. I need to go in today, Fox can only give so many excuses. I don't want to get fired." I told him.
"The only people that can fire you are either Fox or myself. I think you're safe, Mel." Bruce argued. I felt a shudder go down my back as his hand lightly trailed down my spine.
"I need to go to work." I held my ground. Bruce groaned out of frustration. He began to place small kisses along my jaw. His stubble scratched my skin as he did so.
"You can't keep me trapped here." I pointed it out to him. He began to lean forward, causing my body to start to turn.
"Yes I can." He forced me to roll onto my back. He placed more kisses on just under my jaw. His stubble now began to tickle at the sensitive skin of my neck.
"Bruce!" I laughed, "You need to shave." Bruce lifted his head to look at me with that mischievous grin on his face.
"Do I?" He ducked his head back down and purposely ran his stubble on my neck. Another laugh came from me as I squirmed under him. I tried to pry him away with my hands but he quickly pinned them to the bed. With him being much stronger than me there was no way I was winning this.
"Bruce, stop!" I manage to say through my laughter. He finally ceased his attack and he gave a light laugh of his own now. He looked down at me with a grin on his face and a light in his eyes. Any signs of what hurt he felt last night were now gone.
"I'm glad you're feeling better." I whispered to him. Bruce grew a gentle expression on him as he leaned down.
"All because of you." He whispered before capturing me in a loving kiss. He released the hold on my hands and I placed them on top of his shoulders.
He broke the kiss and his hazel eyes bore into my blue ones. I lifted my right hand up and gently caressed his face. Bruce placed his hand on top of mine and he leaned into my touch.
"I love you." I told him. I could feel him smile and he used his hand to move my palm in front of his lips. I felt him kiss the middle of my palm where my scar adorned it.
"And I love you, Mel." I felt his breath against my hand as he spoke. He set my hand down and gave a drawn out sigh.
"You really want to go to work?" I nodded in response, "Fine, I'll go in with you." He stated.
"Okay, but you have to promise me that you won't stop by my office and distract me." Bruce rolled his eyes at me.
"Fine. I promise. Happy?" I chuckled and leaned forward to place a chaste kiss on his lips.
"Very." I said after breaking the kiss. Bruce chuckled with a smile on his face. He rolled off of me so I could finally get out of bed.
My short one inch heels clicked on the tile floor of the Technologies Department. I flipped through some reports from a file I had in my hand. The whole department was working on a large project for Wayne Enterprises. Apparently word had spread around about Wayne Tech's sudden improvement. Including the US Government. Wayne Enterprises was able to snag a contract with the Pentagon of all places. They wanted cloaking technology for military aircrafts. Lucky for them, that already exists where I'm from. The Avenger's aircraft had reflection panels to go off grid whenever it flew. Tony and I had a helping hand in building it.
"Miss Moser!" I stopped in the middle of the hallway and turned around. One of the tech employees, Deacon, rushed up to me. He had a stack of reports in his hands.
"These just came in for you. They want to see you upstairs." I raised an eyebrow at that. Fox wanted to see me?
"Thank you. I didn't realize that Mr. Fox wanted to talk to me this morning." I grabbed the reports from his hand.
Deacon shook his head, "It wasn't Mr. Fox that requested you to look at these reports." I frowned and tilted my head.
"Leroy?" I guessed again and again Deacon shook his head.
"It was Mr. Wayne, Miss Moser." Oh for the love of..!
"Thank you, Deacon. I'll go see what he wants." I swear the days that he actually shows up to work are the days my productivity drops drastically.
I headed in the direction towards the elevators. I pressed the button and quickly glanced at the reports in my hands. They were addressed to me as the Head of Technologies. I frowned seeing these were typically the reports that Fox gave me himself. Did Bruce really snag them from Fox just to say he wanted to go over them with me instead of Fox?
The elevator dinged and I walked in once the doors opened. I pressed the button to the top floor of the executives. The elevator ran for a minute before the doors opened to reveal Katie sitting at the secretary desk.
Katie just hung up the phone when she saw me walk out, "Miss Moser, Mr. Wayne is waiting for you in his office." She said with a smile.
"I'm heading there now. Thank you, Katie." I walked by her desk and down the hall.
I took a right and a little ways further down until I came across a wooden door with a plaque that read "Bruce Wayne" on it. I tapped my knuckles on the wooden door.
"Come in." I heard Bruce's voice.
I pulled down the handle and pushed open the door. Bruce was standing next to his desk. He grew a smirk on his face once he saw it was me.
"Really? You promised this morning." I told him with an unamused expression on my face. I let the door close behind me.
Bruce's smirk widened, "I promised I wouldn't come by your office. I never said anything about having you come to my office." I narrowed my eyes on him.
"You're insufferable." Bruce's smirk turned into a grin and let out a small laugh.
"You've established that plenty, Mel. I do want to go over those reports though. Fox told me you and your department are getting close to finishing the cloaking tech the military wants." I walked over to his desk and set the reports on it. He buttoned one of his suit jacket buttons before sitting down at his office chair. I didn't buy this for one second.
"Uh huh…" I gave him a weary eyed look. His smirk was back in response.
"What? You don't believe me? That hurts." Bruce mocked a hurt expression and placed his hand over his chest.
"Not for a second." Bruce's smirk grew as he leaned back in his chair. He gestured to the pile of reports.
"I'm not letting you leave until you go over this with me." He informed me. I let out a huff and grabbed the first report that laid on the pile. I took a step back and opened the file. I flipped through the pages and subconsciously leaned on my left side more making my hip pop out. I was so focused on finding the page I wanted that I didn't notice Bruce's eyes trail up and down my form.
"Okay, so the small scale model that was created was successfully able to use the reflection panels to go dark. We moved to the large scale model and we came across an electrical shortage issue in the wiring. The technologies department is requesting for solar panels to be purchased to help with the electrical shortage." I read off. I looked up from the file and back at Bruce. His eyes were wandering around my body before they made eye contact with me. I gave him an unamused look.
"Did you even hear what I just said?" I narrowed my eyes on him.
"Of course. It's having power shortages and your department is needing solar panels to fix it. I can listen and admire you at the same time, Mel." I rolled my eyes at him. I pulled the papers back into the file and closed it.
"Fox normally signs these after I go over them to approve them. Are you going to or do I need to go down the hall and have him do it?" Bruce gave me a semi-serious smile and held his hand out.
"I'll sign them." I placed the file in his hand and he turned it towards him. He grabbed a pen and clicked it as he rotated the file to face him. He opened it and began to sign his name at the bottom highlighted sections of the pages.
I crossed my arms in front of me and watched him sign the papers. I still don't buy that he's actually interested in listening to these reports. He has an ulterior motive.
"There's a typo on this one." I was snapped out of my thoughts hearing Bruce.
"What?" I asked in confusion. I uncrossed my arms and gave a slight frown, "I proof read the entire report before giving the okay to have them printed. There shouldn't be any typos." I argued.
Bruce shrugged and tapped on the paper with the back of his pen, "Well there's one here. See it for yourself." He pushed his chair out of the way slightly and angled the file in the opposite direction.
I frowned and walked around his desk. I placed one palm flat on the desk as I leaned on it. I used my other to turn the file a bit more towards me. My eyes skimmed across the wording. I didn't see any typos.
"Where? I don't see an-" I was interrupted as I felt Bruce pull me back. I felt his legs at the back of my knees which made them bend. I gave the man an annoyed glare as I now realized that I was sitting on his lap. Bruce returned my look with an amused one.
"You planned that." I stated.
"I said I wanted to go over the reports with you and I mean it. I just want to do it like this." There's the ulterior motive. I placed my fingers on the file and shifted it to where Bruce could reach.
"This is highly unprofessional, you know." Bruce rested his arm on the desk as he continued to sign his name. I felt his other hand come up and placed it palm side in on my hip.
"We've had sex in your office, Mel. We're way past professional at this point." He said and finished the last page. He closed up the file and reached over to grab the next on in the pile.
"Now tell me about this one." The smirk was back on his face. Something told me I wasn't leaving this spot until all of this was done.
"And done. That's the last one." Bruce announced as he clicked the pen again and set it on the desk. I closed the file and placed it on the stack with the others.
"Great, that means I can leave now." I said with a tight lip smile. Bruce placed a hand on my thigh. His thumb drew small circles on the material of my black slacks.
"Or you could stay a little longer." He hinted. My breath hitched in my throat as I felt his hand move up on my inner thigh.
"Bruce, we really shouldn't. Anyone can walk in." I argued with a weak tone in my voice.
Bruce leaned forward until he was close to my ear, "I'm not hearing a no." He whispered huskily in my ear. I bit my lip to stop myself from letting out a sound when his hand was now pressed against me.
The sound of a knock at the door made both of us jump. I quickly stood up from his lap just as the door opened. I freaking told him so!
Mr. Fox walked in and stopped seeing me in Bruce's office. He gestured to the two of us, "I don't know what I just interrupted and I don't want to know." I could feel my face flush in embarrassment.
"What do you want, Fox?" Bruce asked with agitation in his voice. He leaned his elbow on his desk as he rubbed his forehead.
Mr. Fox gave a solemn look, "You might want to turn on the news." He shook his head, "It's not good."
Bruce immediately frowned and pressed the space bar to his keyboard. The computer woke up from its sleep and Bruce logged in. He clicked on the browser and typed in the local news stations website. On the front page of the website was showing a video that had the red "Live" word on the bottom corner. On screen was video of a helicopter flying over the bay of Gotham City then it cut to an image of what looked like a white transit van being chased by police cars. What the hell was going on? Bruce hovered over the video and unmuted it. The audio from the news anchor immediately sounded in the office.
"-if you are just tuning in, this is a live feedback of the current situation going on right now in Gotham City. Joker and his men have struck yet again. Reports of a hijacking of a helicopter with hostages have been spotted over the bay. Gotham Police have confirmed the high speed chase is also related to Joker. It is unknown if there are any passengers onboard the vehicle."
"He struck during the day." Bruce muttered with a glare towards the screen.
"Two hostage situations going on at once. It sounds to me like Joker is challenging Voltess." Mr. Fox concluded and looked at me.
"He's testing if I can save them all with no help. I need to go." I turned to walk around the desk.
"Mel." I stopped and turned my head to Bruce, "Be careful." I gave a small smile and nodded.
I turned down the hall from Bruce's office and headed for the door that led to the roof. It helped that I was already on the top floor so that meant less stairs. I approached the brown painted metal door and opened it.
Once the door slammed behind me I hit my bracelet. I ran up the stairs as my suit grew on me. I used my powers to open the roof access door. I threw my board out onto the rooftop and made a running jump. As soon as my feet made contact with the board, I shot off.
I flew in the direction I had seen the helicopter that flew just overhead. I didn't know how many hostages were on the helicopter but I needed to find out. Once the helicopter came into my sight I then increased the amount of current running through my board. I easily flew past the helicopter and looked behind me. I could see two of Joker's guys in the front thanks to their face paint. There were three hostages in the back seat of the helicopter. Once Joker's guys saw me, whoever was in control of the helicopter made it dive.
I instantly backed off and pulled back behind the helicopter. The helicopter stopped diving and straightened back out. Damnit, I couldn't get close! That's when an idea popped in my head. I couldn't get close, but the hostages were already there.
"Athena, run facial recognition software on the hostages. Look into their backgrounds. I need to know if any of them can take control of this thing!" I ordered as I flew just under the helicopter and in their blind spot.
"Checking now." I watched on my lenses as Athena pulled up the still image from the recording on my suit. I waited as Athena pulled up each of the three hostages and read the information that the AI pulled.
Athena stopped one of the hostages and highlighted a portion of the background check, "Samuel Hunter has a private pilot license on record."
"Patch me through to his headset." I immediately ordered. Athena pulled up the radio connection.
"Samuel, don't respond to hearing my voice. I need you to stay calm. Now I need you to listen to me very carefully. I don't have enough time to go over it more than once. I know you have a private pilot license which means you went to flight school and know how to fly this chopper. I need you to trust me, okay? On the count of three, I'm going to need you to get up to the pilot's seat and take control of this aircraft. Don't worry about the bad guys, I'll take care of that. Ready?"
I veered off to the side slightly as I got ready myself, "One," I counted and started to gain back altitude, "Two," I sent a stream of electricity to the helicopter and the doors to the pilot's and co-pilot's were forced open, "Three!" I kicked my board and it shot forward. It collided against both of Joker's men and knocked them out of the helicopter and to the water below.
I felt myself begin to free fall without my board. The helicopter began to spin out. I tapped on my control panel and my board did a sudden U-turn. I watched as the helicopter gained back in control as my feet made contact with my board. I flew up to the helicopter to see Samuel now in the pilot's seat.
"Nice job, Samuel. Now get everyone to safety and land that chopper." I praised him.
"Thank you Voltess." I heard his voice come through. I nodded as I ended the connection. I leaned my body back to fly off towards the city. Now to find the van.
"Mel, you have an incoming call from Lucius Fox." Fox was calling?
"Answer it." I replied. I waited to see the call connected screen but instead I got a visual of Fox in my office instead. I could also see Bruce standing next to him.
"You're calling me from my office?" I asked in surprise.
Fox smiled, "I figured out how to connect from your AI here to the one in your suit. Very sophisticated piece of technology by the way. Nice work with the hijacking. Clever thinking of looking for a civilian pilot." Fox complimented.
"Thanks, but you didn't just call to chat did you?" I asked as I turned the corner of a building.
"Afraid not, Miss Moser. Reporters just updated us on the status of the police chase. That transit van is filled with kids that were headed on a field trip." I could practically feel my heart drop.
"It gets worse…" Fox trailed off.
"How can it get any worse?!" I exclaimed.
"Joker's been identified as the driver." Bruce answered. I clenched my hands into fists.
"He's heading to the eastern bridge out of Gotham. Police have already set out spikes to try and stop the van. Police believe he's trying to drive the van over the bridge." Fox informed me.
"Shit." I muttered under my breath, "How close is he to the bridge?!" I asked louder. I changed direction in mid air and sped off to the east side of the city.
"About five miles away." Bruce answered, "You need to get there fast."
"Thanks for stating the obvious!" I yelled as I ended the call. I sent more power to my feet. I could feel my body's charge levels dropping. Without recharging, I wouldn't be able to last much longer before shorting out. I needed to wrap this up and fast.
I could see the flashing red and blue lights from the police cars below. I dove down and flew past the cars until I came up to the van. My glare hardened as Joker looked through the driver side window. He grinned and held his hand up in a wave.
I looked ahead and I could see the spikes the police had set up ahead. It was just before the bridge but at the speed the van was going it could still go over. It needed to come to a sudden stop but I'm getting too low on charge to stop it normally. The van was now less than three miles. It's now or never.
I adjusted my feet on the board and leaned sideways. I clenched my left hand into a fist. I used the momentum of my flying to my fist as I flew towards the driver's side. I sent my punch forward and broke through the glass.
"Everyone better have their seatbelts on back there!" I yelled in reference to the kids. Out of the corner of my eye I could see one kid quickly buckle himself in. There's always one…
I made sure I was flying at the same pace as the van. I gripped the top of the steering wheel with my left hand. I readied my right hand to grab my magnetic disks.
"Hey now! Didn't anyone ever tell you not to grab the steering wheel while driving?!" Joker scolded.
"You clearly haven't taken a defensive driving course then." I quipped back. Just as the van was about to drive over the spikes, I quickly jerked down on the steering wheel.
The sudden movement caused the vehicle to turn sideways. The van's tires hit the spikes and I gripped the steering wheel tighter as I felt the van lift off the ground and start to flip. I grabbed two magnetic disks with my right hand. I threw them down ahead and shot a bolt at them. Just as the van was about to land on the roof, my electrical charge from the magnetic disks reached out to meet the metal.
The magnets didn't completely stop the van due to how much momentum there was behind the roll. It did, however, allow the van to continue to roll until the now flat tires hit back on the pavement. I let go of the steering wheel as the van skidded until it hit the guard rail and fully stopped.
I kicked my board up and caught it with my hand. I shrunk it as I clipped it to my belt. I could see Joker was slightly disoriented from the stunt pulled. Anger surged through my veins as I got closer. I opened the driver door and gripped Joker by his purple suit jacket. I pulled him out of the van forcefully as he let out a laugh. I held him still with my left hand and reeled back my right as I punched him in the head.
I let go and he stumbled onto the ground. His laughs still reach to my ears. I said nothing as he stood back up.
"I gotta admit. The whole flipping the van thing, didn't see it coming. Color me impressed, Voltess. You've clearly been doing this for a long time." I took two steps towards him. I was done with this clown.
A small crowd of police officers were coming from behind me. I noticed Blake and Martin right away. The two of them were sneaking around to try and get to the other side of Joker.
Joker took a step back and I tensed. There were some civilians around him and he knew it. Joker gave a smirk and before I could react he grabbed a young boy from his mother's grip.
The mother screamed and before I could move. An officer pulled back the mother to keep her out of harm's way. Joker revealed a knife pressed against the boy's throat. The little boy was in tears and crying out for his mother.
"Ah, ah, ah. Careful there, Voltess. I know how your powers work thanks to your buddy Cyclone telling me all about them. You can send a bolt with one little move from your finger. You move a single muscle and I might just have the urge to sneeze and give the junior here a close shave." Joker let out a laugh and I completely froze my body. Thanks Ryan for telling him that!
I caught Blake's eyes as he neared Joker from behind. He gave me a silent nod as he approached. Martin was off to the side and had his gun drawn. He was waiting for Blake to make a move.
"What do you want?" I asked. I needed to give a distraction so Blake could sneak up.
"Chaos, Voltess. I thrive off of chaos. It is so easy to make Gotham go into a tailspin. It doesn't take much to create it and then watch as you and Batman scramble to try and stamp it out!" Another laugh rippled from Joker. Blake was almost there now.
"Tell me, Voltess, do you really think you can save everyone?! Well you can't! That's a lesson that I taught Batman years ago! Now…" His fingers danced along the handle of the knife, "It's your turn." Blake quickly grabbed for the knife but at an awkward angle.
It was because of that awkward angle that Joker was able to power through Blake's hold. Blake recoiled and grabbed at his arm where I could see blood flow down. Joker dropped the knife and pulled Blake's holstered firearm. He then kicked Blake who tumbled onto the pavement.
"Drop the gun!" Martin yelled and exposed his position.
Joker laughed, "You wouldn't shoot. Not while junior here is still in my grasp." My eyes widened as Joker raised Blake's Glock.
Electricity crackled around my body as I sent the last of my charge to my legs. The electricity quickened my pace and I was able to get in front of Martin as I heard the bang of the gun go off. I heard the sound of the bullet clinging against the vibranium.
"Nice reflexes, but I said not to move a single muscle." I turned my head as Joker picked up the boy by his shirt. He held him over the edge of the bridge.
"You can either go after me or go after junior! Your choice, Voltess!" He let go of his grip on the little boy.
Without a second thought I bolted for the edge of the bridge. I could hear Joker's laugh as I dove off of the bridge after the boy. Thanks to the boys flailing he was falling slower. I grabbed hold of the boy and brought him close as I tucked my body. I placed my left hand against the boy's mouth and pinched his nose close in preparing to hit the water below.
I felt the slam of the water against my back. I felt the familiar drain in my body from the water. I felt the boy wrap his arms around my neck which allowed my right arm to be free. I started to swim back to the surface. My left hand was still on the boy's face. He was on the young side and I didn't want to chance him accidentally breathing in water.
I finally broke through the surface and I let go of the boy's face as we did. The little boy began to cough and cry at the same time. I held him to me with my right arm now and treaded water with my left.
"I got you buddy. I got you." I soothed as his small arms tightly gripped around my neck. I moved him over to my left arm in order to grab my board.
I moved it to the surface of the water and let it expand. It floated on the water's surface as I used both hands to move the little boy in front of it. He instinctually clung on to the board. I put one hand on the board and the other around the boy.
"What's your name?" I asked the boy.
"Richard." He answered. Oof, talk about an old fashioned name and one that I felt always had a weird nickname associated with it.
"Okay Richard, do you know who I am?" He nodded in response.
"How old are you?" I asked again.
"Five." Jesus that's young. I want to punch in this clown's face after this.
"Do you know how to swim?" He shook his head and I could see the fearful look in his eyes. I lifted him upwards with my arm until his chest was resting on the board.
"Hang on tight, Richard. I'm going to paddle us over to the shore. I'm going to get you back to your mom okay?" Richard nodded. I put my arms over him and started to kick my feet under the water. Police and other civilians were already waiting on the concrete shore. I could feel the burning sensation in my muscles. I couldn't swim for long periods of time thanks to getting shorted out.
I finally made it to the shore and I lifted Richard up for the police officers to grab. As soon as the boy was back on land he ran up to his mother. The woman had tears running down her face and cradled Richard.
A familiar hand then appeared by my face. I looked up to see Martin. I grabbed hold of his hand and he began to lift me out of the water. Another officer put his hand under my arm to help haul me up.
"You alright?" Martin asked as my feet touched solid ground. I nodded slightly breathless.
"I'll be fine." I turned my head as an officer handed me my board. I shrunk it and clipped it back to my belt.
"Voltess," I looked up to see Richard's mother, "I can't thank you enough for jumping after my son." I smiled behind my mask.
"I'm just glad he's alright. I don't know if he'll take swimming lessons now. That's a bad first experience with water." I lightly joked with her. She smiled and picked up Richard who currently had a blanket around him from an officer.
Richard looked at me with a sparkle in his eyes, "What do you say, Richard?"
"Thank you." I held out my hand in front of him.
"You were really brave back there. You did awesome, buddy." Richard grinned and gave me a high-five. Richard's mother held him close and started up the concrete steps.
"Thanks for saving my ass back there." I heard Martin's voice behind me.
"You're welcome. How's Blake?" I asked.
"Medic's checking on him now. He might need stitches." I nodded. At least it wasn't too serious of a cut.
"What about you? You can't fly now right? You need a ride?" I looked back up at the sky where the sun was beginning to set. It wasn't dark yet but he's made exceptions before. As if I had timed it, the roaring sound of a powerful engine could be heard from above us.
"Nah, I got one." I started to go up the concrete steps. As I made it up I could see the familiar Batmobile sitting on the pavement. The hatch was open and Batman was next to the vehicle with Gordon talking to him.
Gordon noticed me first, "You alright, Voltess? That's quite the jump you took." He asked, concerned.
"I'll probably feel it in the morning but I'll live. Which way did Joker go?" I asked.
Gordon gestured to Batman, "I was just telling him that. He stole a police car as a getaway. He drove right past our barricade because of that. We don't know where he went."
Gordon looked back at me, "I can't see your face but I can tell you feel like hell right now. You've done enough for today, Voltess. Go home and get some rest."
I was about to open my mouth to argue when, "She will." Batman answered for me. I glared at him from behind my mask. I could easily dry off and recharge and keep going.
Gordon nodded before walking away from us. Batman turned back to the Batmobile.
"Get in." Was all he said. Not wanting to argue with him, I complied. I ignored my screaming muscles as I hopped my legs over and sat down in the passenger seat.
I sat huddled up against the armchair of the sofa with a blanket around me. I had gotten cold through my suit about halfway through the drive back to the penthouse. That's the one thing that sucks about having a metal suit. Insulation isn't that great.
I was watching the news where they were recapping the footage they got of me just over an hour ago. The helicopter, flipping the van, and jumping after Richard.
"Miss Moser," I turned to Alfred, "I made a cup of hot tea to help warm you up." He held out the tea cup and saucer.
"Thank you." I grabbed the saucer from him and set it on my lap. Alfred smiled and walked off. I heard the secret door open and heavy footsteps following.
I looked in the direction of the footsteps until Bruce came into view. He had changed out of his suit by this point.
"No luck finding him on traffic cams?" Bruce shook his head and let out a frustrated huff.
"None." He answered. He came around and took a seat on the sofa cushion next to me. His eyes turned to the tv and we sat in silence as we both watched the recaps.
"You can tell you've been doing this for years." I looked at Bruce who still had his eyes on the screen.
"I've been doing this for almost six years now. I'd hope I would know what I'm doing by now." I joked. Bruce glanced at me with the corner of his mouth turning into a smile.
"How old was that kid?" Bruce asked as he watched the interview Richard's mother had done. His mother's name flashed across the bottom of the screen. Mary Grayson.
"He's five and his name is Richard." I could see Bruce's jaw muscles tense.
"Joker crossed a line I didn't think he would. He went after kids today." Bruce stated.
"With a man like Joker there is no line, Bruce. He wants chaos. He won't stop until we make him stop." I informed him.
"We'll get him." Bruce reached over and gripped my cold hand in his warm one.
"Mel, you're freezing." He commented and looked at me concerned.
"Metal suit isn't great for going into the cold ocean." I joked and took a sip of the hot tea. As soon as I set the teacup back on the saucer, Bruce grabbed it.
"Hey, I was drinking that!" I scolded him. He smirked and set the tea on the coffee table. He turned so he had one leg resting on the couch.
"You won't need it. I'll help warm you up." I wasn't going to refuse that. I shuffled over to him and kept the blanket wrapped around me. Bruce pulled me against him and I shivered feeling the sudden warmth radiate into my body.
I snuggled further into him, "How are you so warm all the time?" My voice is muffled by the blanket by my mouth.
I heard and felt Bruce chuckle, "Compared to you right now, everything is warmer." He wrapped his arms around me and softly kissed me on my forehead. I could feel my eyes begin to get heavy as my body finally warmed up. The sound of Bruce's heartbeat was a lullaby to me at this point. I let my body fully relax as I was lulled into sleep.
