I tapped the back of my knuckle on the glass door of the small office. Dick looked up from the computer as I walked in. The team were currently waiting around the cave. The calm before the storm if you will.
"We're going to be heading out soon." I said as the glass door closed behind me.
Dick leaned to the side to see the team through the glass. He turned his gaze to me next.
"This is big…isn't it? Whatever's going on." He deduced. A small smile formed on my face as I nodded.
"Yeah. It's big." I walked over to the side of the desk and took a half seat on the top.
Dick turned the office chair and looked up at me, "Exactly how big?" I grimaced.
"I…think you'd be better off not knowing." I answered honestly.
Dick folded his arms and frowned, "Your acting like dad. He doesn't tell me much because of how old I am. I might be twelve but I've been through more than any other twelve year has gone through. I can handle it." I let out a sigh and leaned my arm against my thigh on the desk.
"You're right. You have been through more than your average twelve year old, but so did your father. He's trying to keep you in the dark for as long as he can because he doesn't want you to be like him." Dick scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"Then why is he bothering to train me then?" I gave Dick an earnest look.
"Because he wants you to be better than him." Dick froze and looked at me in slight shock.
I continued, "You have a lot of potential to be someone great, Dick. You pick up things quickly, you're resourceful, you're naturally skilled in the things you try, and you're incredibly bright. I know you want to be like Batman and Voltess, but you don't need to rush into it. You have all the makings of what it takes to be an amazing hero one day. Your dad just wants you to try and enjoy being a carefree kid while you still can. Being a hero isn't easy, Dick. A lot rides on your shoulders." Dick had a look of awe on his face.
"You really think I'd make a great hero one day?" He asked quietly.
I grinned and stood up straight, "I do. One day you will, just not now. Right now, try to take it easy on your dad just a little bit okay?" I sent a wink to Dick who smirked slightly.
"No promises." I chuckled and got up from the desk. I headed for the glass door and placed my hand on the handle.
"Mel," I stopped and turned my head to Dick, "Whatever it is you and dad are about to face out there…just promise me you guys will come back alive." I could see the hidden fear behind his brown eyes. He's already lost one set of parents. He was scared to lose another set.
"I promise." I opened the glass door and walked back out to the lab. Victor was just outside the lab doing something with a hologram. Barry and Arthur were talking while Barry snacked. Diana stood next to Alfred looking at computer screens. Bruce leaned back in a chair as he stared blankly ahead of him. He seems to be deep in thought.
I walked over to him and gently placed one hand on his shoulder. My touch snapped him out of his thoughts. He looked up to me. A small smile formed on his face and he brought up his hand to gently grab mine.
"I know that look, Bruce. What are you thinking about?" Bruce took in an agitated breath while gently squeezing my hand.
"I'm thinking back to what the other Barry Allen said to me." I furrowed my brows,
"About Lois?" Bruce nodded. The middle crease showed in his forehead as he looked at me. He's serious alright.
"I'm beginning to think it meant something much darker than originally thought." Before I could even ask him to elaborate. Alfred began to speak up frantically.
"Master Wayne! Madam! You need to see this!" I walked over to Alfred while Bruce stood up.
"What's going o-" I stopped midsentence seeing what was on the screen. The carrier was hovering above the lake. Bruce walked over and stopped. He was just as speechless as I was.
"Athena, I didn't say to launch when the code was ready." I called out to the AI.
"I didn't, Mel." Athena corrected me.
"I did." I turned my head to Victor, "Your new coding worked, Mel. I just took control to bring it here. It wanted to fly and now it can. Thanks to you."
"Looks like our rides here then. Everyone, head to the ship." Bruce ordered.
"This is gonna be awesome." Barry said with a grin right before vanishing. Only sparks of lightning left where he stood. Victor, Arthur and Diana headed down the metal stairs and began the long trek to the end of the Batcave.
"Well, I have to see this in person." Alfred insisted. He walked ahead of Bruce and I and down the metal stairs.
I went to follow but Bruce caught my wrist and pulled me back. My lips met his in a brief kiss. He had a proud smile on his face.
"I couldn't have gotten that ship off the ground without you, Mel." I smiled back and placed another brief kiss on his lips.
"You're welcome. Grab your cowl and let's catch up with the team." Bruce nodded and turned to grab his cowl but stopped.
Dick stood in front of us with Batman's cowl in his hands. When did he get there? I could tell from Bruce's reaction that he wasn't expecting it either. The natural talent this kid has.
"Can I go see the ship with you guys?" Dick asked. His eyes glanced between Bruce and I.
Bruce smiled and ruffled Dick's dark hair as he walked by, "Come on." Bruce told the boy. Dick grinned and followed just behind Bruce's heels. Batman's cowl still being held in the young boy's hands.
I smiled at seeing him follow closely behind Bruce. Part of me was still in disbelief of where I am now. I have a husband and a son now. A family of my own.
"Mel!" I snapped out of my thoughts hearing Bruce's voice call out, "You coming?" I looked down from the lab to see him and Dick waiting for me.
I smirked and flipped over the railing. The nano board sprung from the soles of my feet as the thrusters turned on. I hovered just above them and Dick had a spark in his eyes.
"Cool." He muttered under his breath.
I looked to the end of the Batcave where the others were waiting for us. I turned back to Dick with a grin on my face.
"You want a ride?" I asked the twelve year old.
"Huh, yeah!" He answered without missing a beat.
Bruce grinned and chuckled next to him. He grabbed the cowl from Dick's hands and placed it over the young boy's head. The cowl slightly leaned forward as it was too big on him. Dick pulled back the cowl as Bruce easily lifted up the twelve year old. The nano board extended as Bruce handed off our son to me. His feet touched the nano board and I placed my left arm around him.
"Hang on to me tight." I instructed him.
His arms wrapped around my waist as I began to lift the board higher. I increased the thrusters to move forward. I didn't take off with the amount of speed I normally would but fast enough. I leaned the board to the side as we took the first winding path of the cave. I glanced down at Dick who had a wide grin on his face through the cowl over his head.
I increased the speed slightly as I took the second winding path. I could see the team and Alfred waiting just ahead. I slowed the board down as I neared the end of the cave.
I could see Alfred smiling as I hovered over the ground. Dick stepped off the board and looked up as Alfred walked up to him.
"Master Grayson, I believe you're a tad bit small to be the Batman just yet." Alfred teased and took the cowl off the boy's head.
"I'm sure he'll be a chip off the old block eventually." Arthur commented with a smirk.
The nano board disappeared back into the soles of my suit. I looked behind me to see Bruce not too far away from us.
"Well I'm kind of jealous. Having Batman and Voltess as superhero parents? That's pretty cool." Barry commented. Dick looked over at Barry's direction with a grin on his face. Barry held his hand out and Dick gave the Flash a high five.
"You got a good kid there, Mel." I turned my head slightly hearing Victor's voice. I smiled slightly while staring at Dick who was now trying to get a low five from Barry. The said speedster kept moving his hand away too fast for anyone to see let alone Dick.
"He is." I muttered back softly.
"Everyone ready?" I heard Bruce's voice directly behind me.
"Let's kick some alien ass." I gave a look to Arthur for cursing in front of Dick.
"Arthur, there's a child present." Diana scolded him.
Arthur rolled his eyes, "So what? I cursed at his age." I pointed a single finger to him and sent a spark. Arthur immediately recoiled and grabbed his upper arm where the spark made contact.
"Alright, alright. No cursing in front of the kid. Got it." He grumbled and rubbed his arm. The platform below us began to move up as the secret entrance above the lake began to open. The sound of rushing water and the ship's engine blasted into the enclosed space.
The platform made it to the top of the entrance. The ship hovered down with the hatch opened up. It connected to the platform for us to begin boarding. Victor was first then followed by the others.
"He'll be here, Alfred, I know it." Bruce exclaimed over the sound of the engine. I knew he was referring to Clark
Alfred handed Bruce his cowl, "What makes you so sure?" Alfred asked.
Bruce gave a knowing smile to Alfred as he and I boarded onto the ship. "Faith, Alfred. Faith." He answered. The hatch began to close as the ship began to lift higher up from the lake. Alfred and Dick watched from below as the ship began to turn around.
"Ready?" I turned my head hearing Bruce. He snapped his cowl back onto place of the neck piece.
A smirked form on my face, "I'm always ready when it comes to saving the world." Bruce smirked under his cowl and we both headed up further onto the ship.
The six of us were gathered in the cargo hold of the plane. The Batmobile parked right behind us. Victor had a hologram up with the area Steppenwolf had fortified as his base of operations.
"Satellites revealed Steppenwolf's created a defensive dome." I stated with my arms crossed over my chest.
"It's a design flaw. Take out the tower, the dome will fall. The enemy never anticipated a frontal assault." Bruce added.
"Right, probably 'cause he didn't think anyone would be that nuts." Barry half joked with a lopsided smile. I gave a light chuckle and Barry grinned at somebody finding his joke funny.
"Bruce is right. We've got to destroy the defensive dome so we can reach The Unity before it synchronizes." Victor backed up Bruce's plan.
"What if the dome's not destroyed?" Arthur asked.
I raised a brow at him, "You're not much of an optimist are you?" Arthur shot me a look.
"I'm a realist." He countered back quickly.
"It'll be destroyed." Bruce reiterated.
"Once Victor is linked with The Unity, with Mel and Barry's help, he'll break through The Unity's defenses." Diana stated.
"Remind me, how's that again?" Arthur asked.
"Uh, with the power of love." I couldn't hold back a laugh from Barry's response. Glad to know I'm not the only person on the team that will joke in times of crisis.
"Don't forget the power of friendship." I added. Barry grinned and he held out his fist.
"Mel, Barry." Victor scolded us as Barry and I fist bumped the other.
I gave one last chuckle, "Gotta have some fun here." My grin then turned serious, "I can give Victor the charge needed but the amount that's needed is more charge then my body can generate. To get the amount required I need to be Supercharged." Arthur raised his brow.
"Supercharged?" He questioned.
"It happens when Mel absorbs a large amount of electricity all at once. Diana and I witnessed it with the fight against Doomsday." Bruce answered. Diana nodded her head in agreement.
"Where does Barry come in with this then?" Arthur questioned and pointed to Barry.
"Typically the only way I can get Supercharged is by an outside energy surge. Lightning strikes are generally what does the trick but there's no storm. And there's no God of Thunder here so magic lightning is out the window. Barry's powers generate lightning when he moves. If he can run fast enough and build up a big enough charge. He just has to make contact with me to absorb that charge. Once I'm Supercharged, I can send the energy surge needed to Victor." I stated.
"A catastrophic energy surge." Barry added and pointed at me.
"You'll have to run faster than you've ever attempted to generate a charge of that size. Once Mel transfers the charge to Victor, it'll propel him inside The Unity. Victor, it's all up to you at that point. Take it apart from the inside before it synchronizes." Bruce instructed.
"Whew. We actually finally have a plan." Barry said relieved.
"We have a plan." Bruce repeated with confidence.
"Athena, how far out are we?" I called out to the AI.
"Ten minutes from the destination, Mel." Athena answered through the intercom of the ship.
"Ten minutes to prepare then." Diana stated.
The six of us departed as each of us did our own way of preparing for the fight. Barry began to do some pre-run stretches. It'd be interesting to see the fastest man alive suddenly stop because of a pulled hamstring. Diana looked over the blade of her sword and shield. Victor readied his arms that turned into blasters. Bruce handed Arthur his trident to him.
I headed to the front of the ship. I leaned against the control panel as I stared out the glass of the cockpit of the ship. The sky was dark now with some clouds in it. We passed just above the tree line of the Russian forest below. I got snapped out of my thoughts when I felt a hand rest just above my left hip. I looked to my right already knowing who the hand belonged to.
"Nervous?" Bruce asked simply.
I scoffed and rolled my eyes, "Please, I've been doing this for over a decade now. Voltess doesn't get cold feet." A confident smirk plastered on my face.
Bruce gave a sly smirk in response, "Voltess might not but I know Melody does. I vividly remember the night before our wedding." My confident smirk instantly dropped. I let out a groan and hung my head. Bruce chuckled in response. I remember that night all too well.
Flashback
I stared at the white simple yet elegant wedding dress. It was in its clear plastic protective cover while hanging on the closet door of the bathroom. The dress wasn't too over the top considering that I didn't care for fancy looking dresses. The dress is pure white with arm straps that hang just below the shoulders. The front and back of the dress were cut low. The end of the dress would just barely hover over the ground when I would wear the short heels with it.
Tomorrow's the big day. November 1, 2018. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach. It was strong enough that it made me nauseous. I guess this is what people call getting cold feet before the wedding. It's a feeling I'm not use to. Voltess doesn't get cold feet. She can't afford to when lives are on the line.
I heard a gentle tapping on the door behind me. I turned around to see Alfred. He gave a fond smile.
"Is there anything else you need before I take off, Miss Moser?" Moser. A name I've had for thirty years and tomorrow it'll officially be changed to Wayne.
"No, I'm good Alfred. Thank you." I said with a small smile. I could tell my nervousness was showing through.
"You know, it is perfectly normal to be nervous on your wedding day." He advised.
"Bruce isn't." Alfred gave a chuckle.
"Master Wayne is very good at masking his feelings, but I assure you it'll hit him tomorrow as he waits at the end of the aisle. Try to get some sleep tonight, Miss Moser." Alfred turned around to leave.
"Alfred," He turned back, "What are you going to call me after tomorrow?" I asked genuinely curious.
Alfred gave a smile, "The same way I had addressed Master Wayne's mother. Madam." Wow…talk about a word that makes you feel older than you actually are.
"That'll take some getting use to." I muttered under my breath.
"I'll be here early in the morning before the beautician arrives." Alfred informed me.
I nodded, "See you tomorrow. Drive safe back to the penthouse." Alfred nodded and strode out of the bedroom.
We had kept to the tradition of the bride and groom not seeing one another until the ceremony. The wedding was taking place in the back garden of Wayne Manor. According to Alfred, it's the same location that Bruce's parents and paternal grandparents had married. Really sticking with tradition here.
Father Joseph agreed to let me stay in the empty master bedroom of Wayne Manor. The kids of the orphanage were being taken on a trip tomorrow while the wedding would be taking place. Everything paid for by Bruce of course. Speaking of the kids, the manor was unnaturally quiet without any of them here. It's Halloween night after all. They're out trick-or-treating.
I turned off the light in the bathroom and closed the door behind me. I walked over to one of the table lamps that was on. I turned off the light and went to the last one that was on. I reached for the back of the lamp but stopped seeing the curtains gently being blown by the wind in front of me. That window was closed before I went into the bathroom. You've got to be kidding me…
"You know it's bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before the wedding right?" I said aloud.
I saw a slight movement in the dark corner of the master bedroom. The familiar figure of Batman stepped into the dim light the lamp gave off.
"I know you're not superstitious, Mel. Neither am I." Batman's robotic voice sounded distorted as he removed his cowl from the neck piece.
I folded my arms and raised a brow at him, "No, but it's also tradition. You're a fan of that considering where the ceremony is taking place. How long have you been there?" I asked.
Bruce gave a slight smirk as he tucked the cowl under his arm and walked closer. "Long enough to know you're getting cold feet." I let out a small groan. He had heard mine and Alfred's conversation.
"It's Halloween, shouldn't you be out there keeping an eye on things?" I changed the subject. Bruce's smirk grew as he stopped in front of me.
"You're trying to change the subject. You really are getting cold feet." He said with amusement clear in his voice.
I shot him an annoyed look, "Fine, yes Bruce. As surprising as it may be, I am nervous for our wedding day. I can handle a hostage situation without blinking an eye or jump off a building without a second thought. Yet, I'm completely nervous just thinking about walking down that aisle tomorrow." Bruce started to walk closer as I rambled.
"So sorry that I don't have the nerves of steel like you do. I-" Bruce's lips met down to mine. Interrupting what I was going to say.
He pulled back and he smiled as I gave him a puzzled look, "It's nothing to be ashamed of, Mel. It just means you're as human as everyone else." He brought up his one gloved hand that wasn't holding his cowl up to my cheek.
"Including Batman?" Bruce's smile turned into a wide grin and chuckled.
"Including Bruce Wayne." He corrected me. Still not Batman huh?
"I'm just as nervous as you are for tomorrow, Mel. Why do you think I'm here?" He stated a rhetorical question.
A small smile grew on my face as I grabbed Bruce's gloved hand with my own. I lifted his hand off my face and gently squeezed it. He returned the same gesture and pulled me to him at the same time.
"We can be nervous together then." I said quietly. I placed my free hand on the bat symbol of his armored chest.
Bruce chuckled slightly and leaned down for another brief kiss. He pulled back from the kiss and took a step back.
"I need to get back out there. Gotham is at its worst on Halloween. Blake can't handle all of it on his own." Bruce stated as he let go of my hand.
"You know there's going to be a lot of copy cats of you out tonight, right?" Bruce gave an annoyed huff.
"I've already stopped three of them. That number's going to more than double at the end of tonight." He placed his cowl back over his head. I could hear the piece clicking back into place on the neck piece. I followed him as he made his way to the opened window.
"Try to get some rest before the ceremony. I don't need you to be falling asleep at the altar." I teased him. He placed one foot on the window seal before turning his head to me.
He gave a smile, "Seeing you walk down the aisle will wake me up." His altered robotic voice sounded.
I loosely folded my arms across my chest, "Be careful tonight. I love you." I said quietly.
"I will. I love you too." He said back. He placed his other foot on the window seal before jumping out the window. I watched as his cape stiffened as he glided down. He landed on the gravel below next to where the Batmobile was parked.
He gave me one last look before climbing into the armored vehicle. The roar of the engine sounded in the quiet night air. The tires spun out on the loose gravel before finally getting traction and took off. A fond smile grew on my face as I closed the window. I'm marrying that man tomorrow.
End of Flashback
"Speaking of that. We missed an anniversary together. We're gonna have to make up for it on the one coming up." I stated and leaned against Bruce.
Bruce smirked, "You're right. We are." The two of us shared a look. We leaned our faces closer for a kiss.
"Get a room you two!" I heard Arthur shout. Bruce and I stopped and turned our heads in the same direction. Annoyance clearly on both of our faces. Arthur, Diana, Barry, and Victor were all staring at us.
"I own this ship, Arthur. If I want to kiss my wife on my ship then I can and will." Bruce informed him with a snarky tone to his voice.
"I thought it was a cute moment." Barry meekly answered and raised his hand.
I couldn't help but chuckle, "Thanks Barry." I said with a small grin.
"Mel, we're here." Athena's voice interrupted us.
"Showtime." I muttered before my mask covered my face. Bruce walked ahead first and I followed right behind his heel. I could feel the ship turn and lower. I sent a spark to the button that opened up the back hatch.
All six of us waited as the hatch opened to reveal the orange glowing dome shield. This is it. The fate of the world depends on our shoulders now.
