My armored feet clanged against the ramp of the ship as I walked down it. The rest of the team except for Bruce followed.
"I'm gonna take out that tower and knock down the shield dome." We turned to Bruce who stood atop of the ramp, "Whatever you see, stick to the plan. It's why I brought you together." Bruce pressed the button to close up the hatch.
All of us watched as the ship hovered off the ground and flew around us. One missile fired from the ship. It created a hole but it was already closing.
"Bruce, pull back. You're not gonna make it." I said into the comms.
"Just have to knock a little louder." I heard him say. He turned the ship around and several missiles fired onto the dome.
A wall of fire from the explosions lit up the night sky. The ship disappeared into the fire. The dome began to knit itself back together after the explosion.
"He's through." I stated. Now we just need the tower down. Moments later the orange dome began to disintegrate. I grinned behind my mask. He did it.
"The tower's down. Do you read me?" I sighed in relief hearing his voice over comms.
"Uh, yeah, loud and clear." Barry answered.
"Are you okay? Bruce?" I asked next but got no response, "Bruce?" I called again with more urgency.
"Get to the reactor. I'll lure as many of these monsters away from you as I can." I didn't like the sound of that.
"What does that mean?" I asked with a firmness to my tone.
"Don't worry about me. Get to The Unity." My brows furrowed under my mask as I heard banging sounds on the comm, "They're here." The comm then went dead.
"Bruce?" No response, "Bruce!" I exclaimed again. Still no response.
"Comm went dead." Barry stated for everyone.
"Let's go."
The thrusters on the soles of my feet shot me off the ground. I decided to forgo the nano board for now. This is a fight where I needed to worry about being fast and not rescuing. I flew at a higher elevation than the others to get a better vantage point.
My lenses zoomed onto the ground trying to find any sign of Bruce. I then heard the sound of distant heavy fire. My lenses then landed on the Batmobile firing at a swarm of Parademons.
"Guys, I found him. He's in the Batmobile heading towards the direction of the watchtower." I informed the team.
"Got it!" I heard Barry's voice over the comm.
I leaned at a downward angle and I flew closer to the ground and the rest of the team. We could all see the watchtower get shot at and began to fall. The Batmobile drifted to the side as it continued to hail bullets on the Parademons. Two of the Parademons made it through and landed on the Batmobile.
I narrowed my eyes on Parademon seeing one of them manage to rip off the hatch.
"Diana! Get ready!" I called out as electricity crackled on my hands. I couldn't make it in time but I could easily launch somebody.
"Ready!" I sent a stream of electricity towards the Amazon and in one swift motion flung my hand forward. I canceled the stream once Diana reached the apex of the throw.
She held her sword and shield out and sliced through both of the Parademons that stood on the Batmobile. The Batmobile continued to drive and headed for an old motel building. Parademons stood at the top and fired their blasters.
Victor and I flew up on either side of the Batmobile. Barry ran directly under me. Arthur jumped down from a nearby building with his trident out. Diana jumped over the Batmobile as its missiles fired into the building.
The rest of us went over the building while the Batmobile mowed it's way through. A swarm of Parademons headed in our direction. I saw Arthur jump from the Batmobile and get carried off by three of them. Victor quickly turned around and flew in the direction he was carried off.
Electricity crackled in my hands as I sent multiple bolts to the Parademons headed for me. One of the Parademons managed to grab a hold of me mid air. It screeched in my face and lifted a clawed hand.
"Aagghh!" I heard Diana's cry come from behind me. I sent a quick zap into the Parademon before turning my body and kicking it upwards. Diana sliced the Parademon in half with ease a second later.
I allowed the nano board form just as Diana's lasso wrapped around it. I increased the thrusters due to the added weight while Diana held on from below.
The Batmobile below drove towards the main hub where The Unity was being held. The Batmobile fired it's arsenal at the coming Parademons. The building beside me suddenly collapsed and I could see Arthur at the bottom of the walkway unharmed. He stood on the body of a dead Parademon.
"Mel!" I heard Diana's voice from below. I focused back on the Batmobile and saw a turret from above aiming at it.
I increased the speed of the thrusters before snapping my board to the side. I moved the nanotech back to the soles of my feet as Diana was launched forwards. She put her shield up and blocked the blast that had headed towards the Batmobile.
The blast sent her back and she sliced another Parademon on the way back down to the ground. I flew past her and my eyes widened seeing another turret blast that made its mark on the Batmobile. Something shot up from the Batmobile as it crashed into more Parademons.
I shot upwards knowing that Bruce had ejected himself out of the Batmobile. I watched as he fired his grapple and pulled himself to a level of the tower. The Parademons screeched as they surrounded the now empty seat.
I sent a bolt at the swarm which killed a couple of them. The small swarm then turned its attention to me. I let out a grunt as one of them slammed into me. Several more then joined and clawed at the Vibranium but to no avail.
"This is gross." I muttered under my breath. I began to draw power from the Arc reactor on my belt. The familiar whirring sound of the Arc reactor could be heard. Blue electricity then exploded from my body and zapped anything touching my armor. The swarm fell to the ground below.
I saw Arthur impale two Parademons below before knocking back another one. Victor and Barry appeared behind him.
"Barry, we got it from here! Start building that charge!" I ordered.
"On it!" He called out to me. He disappeared and all I could see was a trail of lightning from his running path.
I heard more Parademon screeches from above me. I turned my focus on them and the whirring sound of the Arc reactor sounded again. Electricity visibly crackled around my body as I readied an attack. The Parademons were suddenly shot out of the sky by their own blaster attacks.
I looked to my left and saw it was Bruce aiming one of the turrets. He gave me a smirk and nodded. I gave a nod back. He suddenly moved from the turret and jumped down to the next level. The turret he was at blew up and his cape caught the wind and glided him down.
Two Parademons aimed the next turret at Bruce while the third aimed its own blaster. I clenched my hand as I concentrated a large amount of my electricity into the palm of my right hand.
I then released it and a blue laser shot from my palm and sliced through the three Parademons and the turret. Bruce stopped as he stood up from his kneeling position.
"Did you just fire a laser from your palm?" He questioned with disbelief in his voice.
"Yup." I answered. He couldn't see the smirk I held under my mask.
"When were you going to tell me about that?" He asked. I heard a screech come from next to me. I looked over just as Bruce shot at it with one of their own blasters.
I shrugged my shoulders, "Now. It's a new trick I learned thanks to the Arc reactor. If I concentrate enough power to the palm of my hand I can change the form of my electricity." I informed him. I landed on the ground and canceled my thrusters.
I looked behind me and I could see the blue lightning in the distance from Barry. He was currently running circles around the perimeter. It shouldn't be much longer for the rest of the plan now. I heard footsteps approach and stop next to me. I didn't bother turning my head knowing it was Bruce.
"It'll be any minute now. Keep track of where Victor is and stay close. We have one shot, Mel." Bruce advised.
"I'm fully aware." I muttered. I walked to the ledge of the tower and dropped down as my thrusters turned on and kept me up.
"Mel," I stopped and turned to Bruce, "Be careful tonight. We have a son to go back home to." I let my mask drop to show my smile.
"The same goes to you. I made a promise to Dick we'd both come back alive. I have a track record to keep, so you better not break it by dying on me tonight." Bruce smirked in response.
"I wouldn't dream of it." My smile turned into a smirk as the vibranium once again covered my face. I increased the power to my thrusters as I headed for Victor's direction.
No One's P.O.V
"Now take this," Alfred handed Dick a wrench and pointed into the engine, "and tighten that bolt there." Alfred instructed.
Dick placed the wrench onto the bolt and the clicking could be heard. Alfred grinned and patted Dick on the shoulder.
"Excellent." Dick removed the wrench and smiled at the praise. Two distant thumping sounds were heard in the distance. The thumps caused Alfred's drink to splash.
Dick frowned at the drink splashing seemingly by nothing. Alfred looked at it as well in confusion. It didn't feel like an earthquake. The sound of something landing in front of them causes them to look ahead.
Dick and Alfred looked on in shock seeing Superman clad in a black suit with a silver 'S' in the front. Superman smiled slightly as he walked up.
"I'm assuming you're Alfred." The Kryptonians' deep voice sounded.
Alfred was at a loss for words. Dick stared at the superhero in awe. He had only seen Superman from newspapers and videos. Now here he is, standing in front of him.
"Dad said you'd come." Dick was the first one to speak. Superman turned to the boy and the mans' brows furrowed in confusion.
"Your dad?" He questioned.
"I'm Dick Grayson. Bruce Wayne's son." Dick answered. Superman's eyes glanced at Alfred for an answer. He didn't remember Bruce ever mentioning having a son.
Alfred placed a hand on Dick's shoulder, "Master Wayne adopted him almost two years ago after madam's disappearance. It's a rather long story that will have to be saved for another time, I'm afraid. They need you, Master Kent. Now, let's hope you're not too late." Alfred stated.
Superman was taken slightly back hearing the way Alfred addressed him. His words also caught his interest. Voltess had disappeared? He'd have to ask the heroine himself later about that.
"Where are they?" Superman asked.
"Pozharnov, Russia. It's a city not too far from Moscow. That's where the enemy has set up base." Alfred informed him.
Superman gave a slight nod, "I'll find them." He turned around to leave.
"You'll help them…right?" Superman paused and looked over his shoulder. The young twelve year old held a look of hope in his eyes. Superman had a feeling the "them" Dick was referring to wasn't the whole team but rather his adopted parents.
Superman smiled, "That's the idea, kid." Superman bounded off and a thud was heard as he broke the sound barrier over head.
"They'll be back, Master Grayson." Alfred assured the young boy.
"They better. Mel promised." Dick mumbled under his breath. His brown eyes still staring at the night sky Superman had flown off to.
Melody's P.O.V
I landed through the hole in the tower. Arthur and Victor were just in front of me. I glared at Steppenwolf's back through my mask. The three Mother Boxes were already together as one. We didn't have much time left. Barry better hurry it up.
"Hey!" Arthur yelled and slammed his trident against the ground.
A growl came from Steppenwolf as he turned and faced us, "Remember me?" Arthur gave a mock wave to the alien. I walked up to stand in between Arthur and Victor.
"He's just as ugly as I remember." I quipped. My voice altered through the synthesizer of my suit.
Arthur smirked as he looked at Victor and I, "Round two?" He asked us. Steppenwolf walked over and grabbed his axe stuck to the floor.
Victor's arms turned into guns while blue electricity crackled from my hands.
"Hell yeah."
"Bring it on." We said simultaneously.
Steppenwolf charged at us. Arthur let out a yell as he slammed his trident to the floor. Victor fired his guns and I fired bolts to increase the power of Arthur's attack. The waves and beams struck Steppenwolf and sent him skidding back.
Diana then landed in front of us. Her sword and shield at the ready, "Shall we?" She said to us.
Arthur spun his trident in his hands as he readied to charge. I readied myself as electricity sparked around my body.
"Tell me, Amazon, why did you abandon your own sister only to cast your lot with these creatures clinging to their puny lives?" Creatures? Puny? Oh he's asking for it now.
"You weren't there to protect them from me. And, sadly, you could have." Steppenwolf taunted Diana.
Diana charged with a cry with us following right behind her. Her sword clashed against his axe and she blocked an attack with her shield. Arthur ran up and attacked with his trident. Steppenwolf blocked the attack and kicked him away.
I fired a bolt of electricity at Steppenwolf and gave Diana the opening to cut against his armored leg. Steppenwolf aimed a blow at Diana but she dodge in time. Victor slammed against the alien and knocked him off balance.
Victor took to the air and fired several blasts at Steppenwolf. Diana went for another strike but was parried by alien. Victor kept up the onslaught of blasts while I shot bolt after bolt against Steppenwolf and Arthur struck him with his trident.
Steppenwolf turned around and rose his axe up for a strike. Diana jumped over him and parried the blade. Steppenwolf's back was now facing Victor. Victor and I shared a glance as Diana and Arthur kept Steppenwolf's attention on them.
I nodded, "Barry, we're in position. How's that charge coming?" I called out to the comms. I stood just in front of Victor and kept an eye on Steppenwolf.
"Okay. I built the charge. You call it." I heard Barry's distorted voice come through.
I glanced back at Victor to see him reach his hand out. When I focused back up front I tensed to see Steppenwolf toss Arthur and Diana away. Steppenwolf growled and began to walk to us.
"Barry, on one." Victor stated. Electricity crackled in my hands as I sent a stream to try and manipulate the metal armor of Steppenwolf.
I let out a grunt as I struggled to keep Steppenwolf still. He was almost as strong as Thanos was.
"Three," I let out a cry as Steppenwolf forced through my electricity and knocked me away with his arm, "Two." Steppenwolf gripped Victor and pulled him away just as he tried to make contact.
"Get the hell off me!" Victor yelled out.
"Victor!" I yelled out the same time I heard Barry's voice in my ear as well.
"Mel, get in the air!" I heard Diana shout. I immediately ignited the thrusters as Diana hit her bracer against her shield. Arthur slammed his trident to the ground at the same time. The combined attack caused Steppenwolf and Victor to fall to the floor below.
"Victor!" I shouted for the cyborg from the air.
The said cyborg launched himself up. Steppenwolf jumped to follow him but Diana's lasso caught him by the ankle. Victor landed on the upper level as Steppenwolf clung to the edge. Diana was losing her grip but Arthur quickly stepped in and grabbed hold of the lasso.
I gathered electricity in my palm before sending a blue laser to the edge of the upper level. The laser cut through the concrete and sent Steppenwolf and his weapon falling back.
"Victor, Mel!" I heard Barry's distorted shout in my ear.
"Vic, go! I'll watch your back!" Victor nodded and quickly made his way back to The Unity.
"I can't maintain this! Victor! Mel!" Barry's voice sounded again.
I heard the sound of something cracking below. I looked down in time to see Arthur and Diana get crushed by a falling platform from above.
"Diana, Arthur!" I yelled out in alarm. I heard a sudden cry of pain come from Victor. I turned to see him connected to The Unity. Here we go.
Steppenwolf jumped up and landed next to Victor. Electricity crackled around me as I stood in between him and Victor. I gave a piercing glare to Steppenwolf from behind my mask.
"And you, demigod, you wield such power yet you waste it on such frivolous matters. You're not living up to your full potential." He taunted.
"My name is Voltess." I put my palms close together and the whirring sound of the Arc reactor began. Two bolts of electricity formed between my palms and the concentrated amount of electricity began to build up.
"And I'm not a demigod. I'm an Avenger." I shot the concentrated blue laser at the charging Steppenwolf. I gritted my teeth behind my mask as I tried to keep Steppenwolf back. My feet skidded against the floor.
"Victor, Mel! I can't hold this!" I heard Barry's voice.
Steppenwolf's armor tanked the laser being thrown at him. I let out a cry as I felt myself getting pushed farther back. He broke off my attack and fell forward into a kneeling position. Steppenwolf raised his axe towards me and Victor.
"For Darkseid." Steppenwolf brought down his axe. I closed my eyes and waited for the blow.
Clang!
My eyes opened hearing the axe hit but I didn't feel anything. I looked up and my eyes widened behind my mask. I slowly stood up to my feet seeing Clark standing in front of me. A grin made its way on my face.
"You're here." I muttered. Clark looked behind his shoulder and a small smile on his face. His gaze turned back to Steppenwolf.
"Not impressed." Clark blew on the axe and the weapon instantly froze. In an instant Clark shattered his axe and floated above Steppenwolf. He sent a swift kick and sent the alien flying back.
My mask dropped to show my grin, "Clark, it's good to have you back." Clark turned his head to me.
"It's good to be back, Mel." He replied.
Steppenwolf growled and slammed his fist on the floor. My mask formed back over my head.
"Think you can hold him off long enough for us to separate The Unity?" I asked.
Clark smirked as his eyes glowed red, "Sounds easy enough." His laser eyes shot at Steppenwolf. The alien side stepped and the attack went through the wall.
Steppenwolf growled and charged towards us. Before I could even blink, Clark appeared beside the alien and sent him flying down to the lower level. Clark followed down below and I turned my attention to Victor.
"Vic! You ready?!" I yelled out to the cyborg. My eyes glanced up as I saw Steppenwolf get launched into the air and Clark quickly shot off for a follow up attack.
"I'm ready!" Victor yelled back.
"Barry, I need that charge! Vic's connected!" I exclaimed into the comms.
The only response I got was a scream in pain from Barry. Steppenwolf crashed not too far from Victor and I. Clark then landed and punched Steppenwolf in the chest. His eyes lit red as his laser hit the alien and cut off part of his head. Ouch.
"Barry! What happened?!" I exclaimed into the comms. I could only hear disgruntled noises come from the speedster.
"Barry? Barry, are you okay?" I heard Bruce's voice. Only gasping and groaning could be heard from Barry's end.
"Barry!" Mine and Bruce's voices overlapped.
"I got the wind knocked out of me. Need a few seconds, that's all." It sounded worse than just getting the wind knocked out from him.
"It's almost synchronized!" Victor warned us.
"Barry, I know you're in pain but we need you to fight through it. I know it's hard but you can do it. We need this charge." I encouraged him through the comms.
"Okay, okay. I can do this." I heard him respond.
A bright light from a portal suddenly opened up behind Arthur and Diana. My mask dropped as I stared at the portal in confusion. What now? The portal then revealed a large tall figure with glowing red eyes. Is that Darkseid? The one Diana mentioned in her story?
I heard a clicking sound and I froze seeing The Unity stop moving. That can't be good.
"It's too late." Victor muttered. My shoulders slumped and I felt my heart drop. We failed? A bright light suddenly engulfed my vision. I couldn't see, hear, smell, or feel anything.
Then suddenly, I felt a huge surge of energy coursing through my body. Blue electricity sparked out of control from my body and my eyes glowed that electric blue. I could see Victor once again in front of me. I lifted one finger and fired a single bolt at him.
I blinked slightly seeing Victor beginning to separate the boxes. I heard heavy breathing next to me and felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned my head to see Barry leaning on me. When did he get here? My eyes glanced down as I could see a tear in his suit and his bare side exposed. So he did get hit.
I put a hand on Barry's shoulder, "You alright?" He looked at me and nodded.
"I am now." I raised a brow at him. Something happened and I'm not sure what. I thought we failed and didn't stop the synchronization but now we succeeded? Barry did something.
"Superman!" I turned my attention back to Victor. Clark rushed forward and began to help push away the boxes from each other. After a short struggle the two of them successfully separated all three of the Mother Boxes.
A heavy thud sounded next to me. My eyes glanced over seeing Bruce land with his cape draping over him slightly. Steppenwolf suddenly let out a roar at us.
Blue electricity pulsed around my body and my eyes glowed once again. My feet lifted from the ground as I concentrated my power into my right palm. The electricity morphed into plasma as I sent the powered attack at Steppenwolf. The alien roared as the plasma beam melted through his armor and went through his chest.
My attack ended and Arthur's trident suddenly pierced through Steppenwolf's chest. Just below where my attack went through. The alien roared in pain as Aquaman lifted him up in the air.
Clark then leaped from the ground and punched Steppenwolf off the trident and towards the portal. Diana broke into a sprint and jumped off the wall with her sword drawn. She sliced the blade through Steppenwolf. She landed on the ground as the alien's head separated from its body and landed through the portal.
Darkseid stopped the rolling of Steppenwolf's disembodied head before crushing it beneath his foot. The seven of us walked closer to the portal. All of us meeting the gaze of Darkseid. This guy had an aura of power around him. Far stronger than what Thanos had ever given off…even with the stones. I could feel slight dread fill my chest. Is Darkseid really worse than Thanos?
The portal then closed and all seven of us slowly began to look at each other. None of us spoke but you could see smiles begin to form on our faces. We won. We beat Steppenwolf, we stopped The Unity, and we saved the world for the first time as a team.
"That," We turned to Barry who had a grin on his face, "was awesome." Several of us let out a chuckle at his enthusiasm.
"We did it." I spoke up next and looked at everyone.
Arthur smirked and pointed at me with his trident, "You were right this time, sparks." My grin suddenly dropped from my face.
"What did you just call me?" I said just above a whisper. I hadn't heard that nickname spoken since Tony's death.
Arthur frowned at my reaction, "Sparks?" He repeated as his eyebrow slowly raised.
I slowly shook my head. I was trying to form a response in my head but I couldn't pull my thoughts together. My body grew tense as all the memories with Tony calling me that name flooded my mind. I was too lost in thought to miss the concern looks I was getting from the team.
"Arthur, say something. Apologize." Diana scolded and nudged Arthur.
Arthur gave an incredulous look to the Amazon, "Apologize for what?! I didn't do anything!" He sneered at her.
"Mel?" I got snapped out of my thoughts as Bruce placed a hand on my shoulder. I glanced at Bruce before going back to Arthur.
"Sorry…it's just…" I swallowed thickly, "I-I haven't been called that in a long time." Arthur grew a puzzled look on his face.
"You've been called that before?" A ghost smile formed on my face.
"Sparks is the nickname that my best friend gave me. My best friend that's no longer around." Arthur's eyes widened.
"Tony use to call you that?" Bruce asked softly. I could hear the concern in his voice.
"Who's Tony?" Barry asked, looking at me.
"He was an Avenger like me. Arthur caught me off guard, that's all. I'm good." I assured everyone with a sad smile still on my face.
"So, that's a no on calling you that?" Arthur questioned.
A small smirk formed on my face, "We're not there yet. Maybe one day." Arthur smirked back at me.
"Nah. I'll call you it anyway, sparks. Unless you prefer sparky?" I sent a death glare to the Aquaman.
"Hell no." My response gained a group chuckle from everyone. I guess I can tolerate Arthur calling me by that for now anyway.
"I'm calling our ride to us. Let's get the hell out of here." Victor informed us. His thrusters activated and he took off to the top of the tower.
I felt wind go by me and a trail of lightning was left in Barry's path. Clark bounded up and Diana and Arthur jumped their way up. I activated my nano board and held my hand out to Bruce.
"Need a lift?" Bruce chuckled and gave a smile.
He grabbed my armored hand with his gloved one, "One would be helpful." The nano tech extended as I pulled him up to me.
His left arm wrapped around my waist to stabilize himself. Our eyes met and the look that he only held with me around showed itself. He leaned down and caught me in a brief kiss. He pulled back and the two of us shared a smile.
"Let's go home." He said quietly. I gave a slight nod and increased the power to the thrusters.
2 Months Later
I looked up at the large abandoned mansion in front of me. I hadn't been here since Ryan had stayed here for shelter. This place came to mind when Bruce was trying to figure out a base of operations for the Justice League. That's the name everyone decided on calling ourselves. Just like the Avengers, we were separate and lived our lives. But if the Earth needed us again, we would come together to fight off the threat together.
"Mel! You gotta see the inside! It's massive!" Dick shouted from the double doors. He had been the first one inside with Bruce and Alfred not too far from him.
I chuckled, "We're coming!" I called back.
"He's certainly excited." Diana mused as she looked over at me. The two of us began to walk towards the front doors.
"He's been getting out of his shell more and more. Compared to two months ago, he's a completely different kid." I stated.
Diana glanced at me with a soft smile, "He only had a father figure for eighteen months. I think having a mother figure in his life now has helped him tremendously." I glanced at her with a smile on my own face.
We walked out from the tall grass and stepped foot on the concrete path, "Have you told him yet?" Diana suddenly brought up.
I grimaced slightly, "Not yet." Diana shook her head at me.
"He deserves to know, Mel." She chastised me. I gave a huff and sent her a narrowed eyed look.
"I'm well aware, Diana. I'm just waiting for the right time." Diana gave a slight eye roll to me. The two of us then stepped over the threshold.
Bruce was eyeing the open living room with Alfred next to him. Dick ran ahead and looked up at the high ceiling with a grin on his face.
"Wow. Must be one hundred, one hundred and fifty feet." Bruce commented.
"Must be." Alfred agreed.
"Big round table. Seven chairs, right there." Bruce commented and gestured his hand out.
"But room for more." I commented as I stared at the open floor. Bruce turned to me with a smile on his face.
"But room for more. God help us." He muttered and turned back to the room. This place definitely had the potential to be like the Avengers Compound.
Alfred looked down at his watch, "Oh dear, it's this late already." I frowned while I looked at Alfred.
"What's wrong?" Alfred looked up to me.
"I believe Master Wayne agreed to meet up with Master Kent?" Oh crap. Is it that late already?
"That's right. Moving day." I stated and looked over at Bruce.
"You two better get going then." Diana stated.
"Alfred, I'll trust you to finish up the deal with the realtor?" Bruce questioned. Alfred gave a small nod.
"I'm sure Miss Prince and I can handle it from here. Give my congratulations to Miss Lane." Alfred assured us.
Bruce gave a slight smile, "Dick! We're leaving!" He called out to the boy. Bruce and I turned around and headed out of the abandoned building.
"Coming!" I heard Dick yell from behind me. I heard his pounding footsteps and he soon ran past Bruce and I towards the car.
Bruce gave a sigh, "To be a kid again." He said with a chuckle. He stuffed his hands in his pockets as we walked.
I walked up to Bruce and looped one arm around his and leaned against him. He looked down at me with a smile and kissed the top of my head as we walked.
"You know, he's going to start pegging you to take him out one night again. Right?" Bruce let out a ragged sigh.
"You don't think he's too young?" He questioned me.
"Twelve is too young, I agree there but you're also talking to the person who recruited a fifteen year old into the Avengers. I've even seen a fourteen year old with incredible powers." I reminded him. Dick made it to the car and turned around to see we were halfway through the tall grass.
Bruce took a deep breath, "So how old were you thinking for him?" He asked.
"You've been training him since you adopted him at ten, Bruce. I say give him a shot on his thirteenth birthday. Blake left the old Robin suit in the cave. I could easily fabricate a new one of the same style to fit Dick." Bruce looked down at me before looking back to Dick.
"Fine, but if something happens he's waiting another two years." I chuckled and rolled my eyes.
"He'll be fine, Bruce. He's our son after all." I reminded my husband. Bruce smiled and I unhooked my arm as we approached the car. Bruce unlocked the car and Dick climbed into the back seat. We'll have to sit down and talk to Dick later about our new decision.
I watched from the window of the kitchen of the Kent's farmhouse. Bruce and Clark were talking to each other while Dick kicked around a soccer ball Clark had given him.
"Now that look on your face is a familiar one." I grinned hearing Martha Kent's voice behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see her set down a box on the island counter. Lois was right behind her with a wicker basinet under her arm.
"What look?" Lois asked and looked over at me. I shrugged my shoulders. Martha gave a knowing smile as she opened the box.
"The look of a proud mother and wife when she sees her husband and son together. I had that same look many a time with John and Clark." Martha informed us.
"Huh, apparently I had a look." I joked and gave a playful smirk to Lois.
Lois chuckled in response, "Apparently. How are things, Mel?" She asked.
I nodded my head, "They're good. We finally found a place where the League can call home. Alfred and Diana are finalizing with the realtor now. How about you? How far along?" I asked her and leaned against the kitchen sink.
Lois smiled and placed her left hand on her stomach, "Good and doctor says four weeks." I gave a friendly smile to her.
"Congratulations by the way. From all of us. We're happy for you and Clark." Lois gave a smile back. She set the basinet down and walked over to me.
I stood up as Lois put arms around me in a hug, "Thank you, Mel. That means a lot coming from you. I know you had a hard time because of Clark." I pulled back from the hug with a firm look on my face.
"It's not Clark's fault that happened. I never blamed him, Lois. Bad things happen sometimes and if I could go back and redo it. I wouldn't have changed a thing." I looked back out the window.
Dick kicked the soccer ball over to Bruce who quickly began to play keep away as Dick tried to get it back. Clark then stepped in and kicked the ball back to Dick. Even from here I could see the stink eye Bruce was giving Clark.
My mind tracked back to the other universe Wanda had told me about. I knew how my life would have gone if I didn't miscarry. Sure, I would have had a flesh and blood daughter but Dick would have never been adopted by us in that universe. He'd still be getting bounced around from family to family. He'd still hold that anger close to his heart and nobody would understand his pain. He would have never become mine and Bruce's son.
I smiled and turned back to Lois, "Dick may not have my blood running through his veins, but he's still my son." My eyes flickered over to Martha. She gave a heartfelt smile and I could see tears form in her eyes. I used the same words she used towards me and Bruce years ago.
"You're going to make an old woman cry." Martha mustered up her best firm voice. Lois and I grinned at each other. We walked over and each put an arm behind Martha's back in a hug. Martha sniffled and I felt her hand run up and down my upper arm.
"I'm supposed to be the emotional one." Lois joked, making all of us chuckle.
I separated from the hug and Martha wiped her eyes with her fingers. She gave one last sniffle before looking at me.
"I'm making dinner tonight and I would love nothing more if you and your family could stay and eat with us." Martha offered.
"Martha, we don't want to impose. You're just getting settled back in." Martha shook her head and grabbed my hands with hers.
"You're not imposing on anything. I insist. I'm not taking no for an answer." My eyes glanced at Lois for help.
Lois shook her head, "You're on your own with this one, Mel." I gave a sigh.
"Fine. Okay, but only if I can help cook." Martha smiled and patted my hand with one of hers.
"That sounds like a deal to me." She removed her hands from mine and dug into her purse on the counter. She pulled out a list and handed it to me.
"Give this to Clark. This is a list of ingredients I need to make dinner." I grabbed the shopping list from Martha's hand.
"You know he can hear us right?" I looked off the side to see Clark staring at us through the window. He smiled and lifted his hand up in a wave.
"Eavesdropper." I muttered. I could see Clark grin and his shoulders moved slightly from his laugh.
I made my way out of the farmhouse while getting out of the way of the movers. I walked down the porch steps as Bruce and Clark walked over. I held the list up in between my index and pointer finger.
"You already know." I stated and held the list out to Clark.
He gave a slight chuckle and took the list from me, "She's hard to say no to." Bruce frowned in confusion as he stared from Clark to me.
"Try impossible." I corrected him.
"What's going on?" Bruce asked and gestured between Clark and I.
"Martha "insisted" on us joining them for dinner tonight." I used my fingers to emphasize the quotations on the word "insist".
A small smile grew on Bruce's face, "Did she now?" I nodded and pointed at Clark.
"He's being sent on the grocery run." Clark held up the list in question.
"Why don't you take Dick with you? Give you an extra set of hands and a trial run for what's to come." Bruce offered and clapped Clark on the shoulder. He had a smirk on his face as Clark looked at him.
"I don't think a twelve year old would be interested in a grocery run, Bruce." Clark refused.
Bruce smirk grew at the challenge, "Hey Dick!" The boy in question looked over at us. Bruce gestured to him to come over. He picked up the soccer ball in his hands and ran over.
"Yeah dad?" He asked as he stopped in front of us.
Bruce gave an open palm gesture to Clark, "Clark's mom has been kind enough to invite us to stay for dinner tonight. He's being sent to grab what she needs to make for dinner. He needs an extra set of hands to help him. You want to go with him?" Dick looked up to Clark and smiled.
"Sure." I held back a chuckle seeing the defeated look on Clark's face and the shit-eating smirk on Bruce's.
Bruce patted Clark on the shoulder, "Told you." Clark gave a sigh and pointed his thumb to the blue beat up pick up truck.
"Get in the truck." Dick dropped the soccer ball and ran for the truck.
"Hey," Dick stopped and turned to me as I pointed to him, "Don't run off from him in the store. Am I clear?" I said firmly.
"I know, Mel. It's not like I could lose him even if I tried." Dick said and rolled his eyes.
"Attitude. Don't talk to her like that." Bruce warned and sent a stern gaze to the twelve year old.
"Sorry, Mel." I heard Dick grumble and walked to the blue pick up. Bruce then turned to Clark.
"See what I mean? Trial run." Clark gave a sigh and fished his keys from his pocket.
"Such a pal, Bruce." He muttered and walked to the driver side door of the truck.
Bruce walked to my side as we watched Clark and Dick climb into the truck. The old engine turned over and Clark began to back out the truck to the dirt road.
"You're sounding more and more like a mother." Bruce commented and lifted his hand up in a wave as they drove off.
I raised a brow and looked at him, "Because I am one." I stated a matter of fact. Bruce chuckled.
"You know what I mean. Two months ago you were more laid back than you are now." I rolled my eyes and began to walk over to the side yard. Bruce followed right beside me.
"Well with the way our relationship started, I needed to be friends with him first. Now, we're past that." I stated and stopped by the old oak tree.
Bruce looked at me with a small smile, "He looks at you as a mother figure in his life now. He told me himself." I raised my brows at that.
"Really? He said those exact words?" Bruce shrugged.
"Not the exact words he used but it was generally the same. I wish he would start calling you "mom" by now." I gave a look to Bruce.
"Bruce…"
"I know, I know. I'm not going to force him. It's up to him when he's comfortable enough. I can still hope." Bruce assured me.
I nodded and bit my lip in thought. I looked over at Bruce and his gaze was on the horizon where the sun was beginning to get low. I took a deep silent breath.
"Bruce." He turned his head to me. I turned to face him and a mild serious look on my face. Bruce frowned seeing the look and fully turned himself.
"What? Is something wrong?" He questioned. I shook my head.
"I don't know when Dick will start calling me "mom" but in seven months I know someone who will." Bruce's eyes slowly started to widen and his mouth went agape.
"Bruce, I'm pregnant."
Finally made it to the establishment of the League! This doesn't mark the end for my story. I have several more ideas for future chapters before I get to the end. I am going to take a small hiatus from uploading the story however. I go on vacation next week with family and will be spending some much needed relaxation time. I'll try to post the next chapter in a couple of weeks after I've written several in advance. Thank you to everyone who has been following this story since I first began to post it. :)
