Chapter 4. The Boardwalk
As Junna and Nana turn away from their balcony and head back inside their hotel room, there's an undeniable air of excitement drifting between them.
"I can't believe it!" Nana grins. "We're really here at the beach!" She'd hardly put her phone down from taking pictures or recording videos on the bus all morning, and now she takes it out once again to start recording the view of the ocean from their room. She the turns the camera onto her roommate and puts on her reporter-like voice. "So, Junna-chan. Tell us where we're heading today."
Junna goes to her bag to begin finding a change of clothes appropriate for the weather and atmosphere.
"Well, you and I decided on the boardwalk. After all, I'm still not the greatest swimmer, and I don't like the idea of just sitting on the beach doing nothing all day."
"True, true! The boardwalk has so many fun things we can choose from! There are games and rides and restaurants!"
"Yeah. I figured we'd have a lot of options." Junna straightens up and pauses. "Are you gonna change out of your uniform, Nana?"
"Huh? Oh, right!" She stops recording her video and puts her phone down, then scampers over to her bag for a change of clothes. "Hmm… I did bring a few things for baking, but I guess I can do that once we get back."
"Yeah, do that later," Junna advises. "It's your day off too, Nana. Enjoy yourself."
"Riiight~!"
They take turns getting dressed in the bathroom. Junna comes out in jean shorts and a white blouse, and Nana in pink shorts and a teal-and-yellow tank-top. They each take a small handbag along with them for their phones, wallets, and key cards, step into their sandals, and once they're both ready they head out. As they take the elevator down, Nana is humming with excitement. Junna chuckles.
"I think Karen is rubbing off on you."
"You might be right! Ah, it's just so dazzling! Our little vacation with everyone!"
"I know what you mean. Even though it's only one day, it's definitely going to be one of the most memorable."
"Right?"
The elevator doors open up and they step out into the lobby, at which point Nana takes hold of her partner's hand. Junna blushes.
"N-Nana…"
"We don't wanna get separated, right? And besides, this is just a date for you and me right now, Junna-chan!"
"A d-date? I mean, I guess you could think of it that way…"
"Right~?"
They head to the doors and exit the hotel together, squinting at the brightness of the day outside. Nana draws in a deep breath and lets it out as a sigh.
"Ahh, the smell of the ocean is so nice!"
"It's not so overpowering once you get used to it."
They follow the sidewalk and start their journey toward the boardwalk.
Nana hums as they go, swinging Junna's hand lightly in hers. Junna even swings back a little. It isn't long before Nana is taking out her phone with her free hand and taking pictures of the beach as they walk along beside it.
They only walk for about five minutes until the concrete sidewalk beneath their sandals turns to wooden planks. Nana gives an excited little bounce, and the two girls collectively quicken their pace a bit. There are more people walking around them now heading for the archway at the entrance of the boardwalk welcoming guests in. When they're close enough, Nana pauses to take a picture of that, too.
"Wow, it's so cool!"
"All I can smell is food and it's making me hungry," Junna says. "I bet they have all kinds of stuff here."
"Then let's go!" With a jubilant tug of her wrist, Nana brings her roommate forward, and together they pass beneath the arch.
The boardwalk stretches out for miles in front of them, and each side is lined with dozens of little shops, games, and attractions. Crowds of people meander at their leisure going in every direction, and there's a small path that a trolly would come around on to bring people for a ride. Both girls marvel at the sight of it all for a moment.
"It's like a festival!" Nana breathes, squeezing Junna's hand more tightly.
"You're right. It really is. A season-long summer festival."
"Where should we go first? There's so much!"
"Well, let's start slow," Junna suggests. "We have a few hours before we're meeting up with everyone again."
"Okay!"
So they begin their walk, Nana still snapping pictures on her phone while Junna tries to decide where to begin.
First, they stop at a food stand, as Junna admittedly hadn't eaten much for breakfast this morning before they'd left Seishou, and now that all the excitement about arriving had settled, she's beginning to feel her empty stomach.
"I just don't know what to get," she mumbles. "Nothing here is really a nutritious breakfast-like option."
"We don't need nutrition right now, Junna-chan! It's our one day of vacation! You should get whatever you like!" Nana turns her phone on her partner and smiles. "Don't worry, I'll make us something nutritious later, so for now have something sugary to give you some energy!"
"Well, when you put it like that…"
Junna decides on a crepe, and Nana orders some fries along with it. They bring their food over to a small picnic table on the side of the boardwalk that overlooks the beach. Nana picks away at her fries while still recording her roommate.
"And here we witness a rare sight; Junna-chan eating a crepe! I don't think I've ever seen you eat one before!"
Junna swallows her mouthful and covers her mouth with her napkin, blushing lightly.
"Well, we've never really had the opportunity to eat them back at school, right?"
"Oh! We should definitely make crepes sometime! That's a great idea, Junna-chan!"
"A-All right," she chuckles. "I guess that would be pretty fun. Can I have a fry?"
"Sure! Help yourself!"
Junna takes one for herself, then flashes Nana a quick glance before looking away again. Nana tilts her head.
"Junna-chan?"
"Could you… stop recording for a second?"
"Hm? Okay." Nana turns off her phone and puts it down. "What's up?"
Junna flashes her another bashful glance, seeming a bit more relaxed now that the camera is off her.
"You can have some of my crepe, too. If you want."
Nana breaks out into a huge smile.
"Really? Thanks, Junna-chan!" She leans in close and takes a bite of the soft sweetness right where Junna had last bitten. Junna blushes even darker. Nana giggles.
"Yummy!"
"Jeez… Hey, you've got cream on your face." Junna picks up her napkin and reaches forward to clear away the spot of cream on Nana's cheek. Nana pouts in good fun.
"Aww, Junna-chan, you should've kissed it away!"
"Wha-?!" She sputters, almost clattering her chair over. "Nana!"
"Ehee hee!"
They finish eating and throw away their trash, then lock hands again as they continue their walk.
"If we're going to shop or win things from games," Junna says. "We should do those last. We don't want to have too many bags and things if we plan on going on any rides."
"Right," Nana agrees. "But we also just ate, so maybe no rides just yet."
"So if rides, games, and shopping are out for now, that leaves only one thing." Junna inclines her head a bit, and Nana follows her gaze down the boardwalk a little ways. The building Junna indicates has a large sign with a shark, stingray, and seahorse hanging over it.
"Oh!" Nana squeals. "The aquarium! That's perfect, Junna-chan!"
"Right?" Junna puffs her chest up proudly and adjusts her glasses. "Let's take our time."
Nana lets go of her roommate's hand and latches completely onto Junna's arm instead.
"Mmhm!"
So they head for the little aquarium, which begins with a dark room with a large tank that's filled with all kinds of sea creatures. Junna studiously reads each and every plaque of information for all the animals and fish while Nana does her best to take at least one picture of each of them as they swim by.
When they've finished there, they head to the next room which is full of smaller tanks of brightly-colored coral and fish. Nana takes pictures of everything as Junna reads and observes.
Next, they find themselves at a touch tank. After washing their hands, they're permitted to reach into the warm water to pet stingrays, crabs, and a nurse shark. Junna is content with the rays that flap along the sides, while Nana giggles at how soft and slimy the shark feels.
After drying their hands and taking a few more pictures, they proceed to one final room of jellyfish, eels, and other deep-sea creatures. They walk through the gift shop at the end, but restrain themselves from buying anything just yet so they won't have to worry about dropping things on any rides they go on.
As they exit the building and head back onto the boardwalk, Nana is still curled around Junna's arm while swiping through her phone's camera.
"Ahhh that was so fun, Junna-chan! Look at this picture I got of the tuna! Kuro-chan will love it! And I've gotta show Hikari-chan these jellyfish!"
"Which was your favorite one, Nana?" Junna asks.
"Hmm, that's tough. I think I like them all in different ways! What about you, Junna-chan?"
"Me? Hmm…" She thinks it over for a moment as they walk. "Well, as long as they're in a tank, I think I really like the sharks. They're totally different from how most people think of them. It just goes to show how doing your research and reading proper documentation can educate you about the facts."
"Hee hee, that's such a 'Junna-chan' answer!"
"I mean, what did you expect?"
After passing by a couple more shops and game stands, they ultimately decide on a few rides next. One is a lazy river type with little boats shaped like swans. Nana takes a picture to show Maya later.
She and Junna get into a boat side-by-side, and the ride takes them off on an underwater track at a leisurely pace. The little tunnel it brings them through is peaceful and blue, with the walls painted in various relaxing ocean scenes. Nana snaps pictures all the while, but always returns to holding Junna's hand.
After that, they try a mini roller coaster for kids, but Nana is too tall to ride it, so they have to try another. When they find one they can both fit on that isn't too fast or crazy, Junna clings to Nana all the while as the air blasts past her. She lets out a few short screams while Nana is laughing and hugging her.
When the ride is over and they step off, Junna is a little wobbly, so Nana suggests they sit for a while. They find an empty bench overlooking the beach, and once Junna can lean back against it she lets out a sigh.
"Well… that was something…"
"Junna-chan, was that your first time on a roller coaster?"
"Yeah."
"You did really well! Wasn't it fun? It's not so bad if you open your eyes and look at how beautiful everything is!"
Junna chuckles, leaning her head against Nana's shoulder.
"Yeah…" She'd opened her eyes, all right, but she hadn't been looking at the scenery.
Nana wraps an arm around her, and together they enjoy the view of the ocean, watching seagulls scuttle along the sand snatching up lost French fries. Nana watches them with a smile, and in just a few moments she realizes Junna has dozed off. She had woken up very early today to help prepare for the trip, and she'd been making arrangements for it for the past week or so as well. Nana pulls her in a little closer and kisses the top of her head.
"Good work, Class Rep." She twirls her fingers through Junna's ponytail for a few moments, gazing out at the distant ocean and breathing in the scent of salt and sand. Only a few minutes later, Junna opens her eyes again and lifts her head.
"Nana? What-? How long was I asleep?"
"Only a few minutes," Nana smiles. "I guess you needed a power nap! Do you feel more awake now?"
"Definitely." Junna gets to her feet and stretches, then offers Nana her hand. Nana accepts and stands with her. "Well then," Junna says. "Are you up for some games?"
"Of course!"
It doesn't take long to find some. There are plenty of game stands all around with people announcing them over microphones. The prizes range from small handheld toys to large soft plushies of various animals and characters, including Mr. White and Suzudaru Cat.
The two of them try a couple of games like squirt gun races and scooping up little rubber duckies out of a pool, but they don't win those games.
It's a game of chance and luck that Nana wins, choosing the correct number a spinner will land on. She receives the grand prize of a big stuffed teddy bear, but happily hands it over to the little boy who had been sitting next to her.
"I won't be able to carry Mr. Bear back with me," she explains. "So please take care of him for me!"
As she and Junna watch the squealing boy and thankful mother walk away, Junna takes Nana's hand and gives it a squeeze.
"That was so 'Nana' of you," she chuckles.
They watch a couple other games as they pass by, then eventually turn around and start heading back the way they'd come. They stop by an arcade, where Nana wins a little plush turtle from a crane game and happily offers it to her roommate. Junna thanks her and puts it into her pocket.
She wants to get Nana something too, but she hadn't seen any games she felt confident she could win. She makes it her own personal goal to win her something before they leave the boardwalk.
Of course Nana is humming and smiling and seems perfectly content without anything, but Junna's made it her agenda now.
As they walk hand-in-hand, she glances at every shop and stand in sight, looking for anything Nana might like. There's so much noise and so many people moving around she almost misses it, but by a stroke of luck she spots the perfect prize. A big, soft, green frog pillow plushie.
Junna pauses, giving Nana a small tug. Before Nana can even ask, she spots the froggie and gasps, her eyes lighting up.
"Oh! It's so cute!"
"Let's see what kind of game it's for," Junna suggests.
They shuffle through the crowds of passing people, and when they finally reach the stand, Nana cries out in delight, and Junna smirks. It's an archery game.
"They might as well just hand it to me now," Junna says, letting go of Nana's hand so she can stretch out her fingers.
"Yay! Go, Junna-chan!"
The entire back wall of the stand is covered in different colored balloons, and each archer is given a color to aim for. Whoever hits the most of their color in fifteen seconds wins.
Of course, Junna waits until the other participants are people her own age rather than children.
Once she's paid the small fee and received her green plastic bow and arrows, she waits for the bell to chime. She takes aim and hits the balloons of matching color to her arrows, refilling and re-firing with impeccable speed. She hits every green balloon dead-center and in rapid succession.
The other people playing barely manage to hit three or four of their colors, and the young man who did second-best only hit seven, whereas Junna managed to hit ten of the green balloons in only fifteen seconds. There's a round of applause from the workers and other players as Junna puts down her bow, and immediately Nana is throwing herself at her in a bear hug.
"Junna-chan! You were sooo cool!"
"Th-Thanks…" Junna blushes, but allows herself to bask in the moment and hug Nana in return.
When she's ready, Junna requests the frog plushie and the clerk hands it to her. She then offers it to Nana, who in turn hugs her again, squishing the plush in between them.
"Thank you, Junna-chan!"
"D-Don't mention it…"
On their way back along the boardwalk, Nana is hugging her froggie to her chest while also still clinging onto Junna's arm, and she's absolutely bubbling with joy. In spite of her height, she looks just as gleeful as any of the little kids walking past them. Junna holds her head proudly, and the smile never leaves her lips.
Before long, they've reached the entrance to the boardwalk again. As they pass under the archway, Nana pauses them.
"Junna-chan, I wanna take one last photo here!"
"Sure." Junna takes a step away, but to her surprise Nana pulls her right back in.
"Non-non, Junna-chan! You're in this one, too!"
"Really?"
"Mmhm!" Nana holds her phone up and smiles into the camera, holding her new plush pillow and Junna with her other arm. "Say 'cheese'!"
"I guess I've got no choice…" Junna leans close to Nana and gives a small smile up at the phone. Nana snaps a picture of them with the boardwalk in the backdrop.
"Okay!" she says. "Just one more!"
"Geez, Nana…" But Junna's sigh stops short as her roommate suddenly turns without warning to plant a warm kiss on her cheek. Junna's face turns red instantly.
"N-Nana!"
"Ta-da! There's our picture!" Nana brings down her phone to look at the shot of their kiss. Junna flounders.
"H-Hey! Delete it!"
"Awww, why? You're so cute, Junna-chan!"
"You ambushed me!"
"'All's fair in love and war,' right?"
"Geh- You're using that against me…?" Junna has to admit defeat in the end, and Nana triumphantly pockets her phone with all the new pictures on it from today. As they make the walk back toward their hotel, they lock hands and take their time.
"Sooo?" Nana prompts. "Did you have fun, Junna-chan? How did you like your first-ever roller coaster?"
"It wasn't so bad, I guess," she mumbles. "But I'm glad you were with me for it, Nana. I liked the boat ride, too."
"Yeah! And petting the sharks and seeing all those fish! And it was so cool to watch you win that archery game!"
"It was no problem. Thank you for the sea turtle."
"My pleasure!"
The walk back to the hotel feels so much shorter than the walk to the boardwalk had. But before they go back to the property, Nana spots a souvenir stand along the sidewalk, so they venture over together to look at keychains.
"Hmm…" Junna puts on a pensive expression as she observes the selection. "I'm not sure which one to get."
"Then I'll pick for you, and you can pick for me!"
"Okay."
They make their purchases separately, then make their reveals as they walk back to the hotel.
"Ta-da!" Nana beams, revealing a sea turtle keychain. "I'm not sure why I feel like a sea turtle suits you, Junna-chan. Maybe the hard shells remind me of your glasses? But I also feel like sea turtles are really observant of the other creatures around them!"
Junna accepts the keychain with a smile.
"Thanks, Nana. I love it. But I don't think I have as good an explanation for yours…" She holds out a penguin keychain to her. "There weren't any frogs, but for some reason I felt like a penguin might suit you. They don't like being lonely, and they stay huddled up in groups together. Also I don't think they really feel the cold that much, which is sort of like you, since you always sleep with your stomach exposed…"
Nana happily accepts the penguin.
"Thank you, Junna-chan! It's perfect!"
Nana kisses her again, and this time Junna is read to kiss her back.
They cross the street together, then begin discussing what to have for lunch.
A/N: Domestic married wives, essentially. It was fun trying to think of them playing games and winning prizes for each other, and I knew immediately what kind of game Junna would be winning haha
