"What do you mean, we have to choose?" Ruby asks, looking at the Librarian who begins to fiddle with the control console.
He chuckles and turns to the red-hooded girl, "I'm not into kidnapping, nor am I one to force four young women to watch something with me." Snapping his fingers, the doors to the T.A.R.D.I.S open suddenly. "If you want to stay, it needs to be unanimous." He points to the now-open doors and RWBY's dorm room, "go outside and come back in when you've decided."
The Librarian turns back to the console and messes with one of the screens. One by one, each of the members of team RWBY exit the T.A.R.D.I.S, leaving the Librarian to his lonesome. As the doors close behind them, the Librarian sighs and leans down, his arms resting on the console.
"Will it work, this time?" He asks the machine. "Can I save everyone?"
The only response he gets are a few beeps and whirs.
Sighing, the Librarian pulls upward on one of the buttons, sliding open a secret compartment from beneath it.
"This time," the Librarian whispers, "I'll make it right. I promise." As he pulls out the contents, a single tear rolls down his face. In his hand, a small rose petal and a photograph, showing a small group of people smiling.
And in the center, the Librarian holding a long, thin sword next to a red-hooded woman with a scythe.
"I promise."
Yang groans, jumping onto her bed, "that was fun! Too bad we only sit there, though. I wish we could actually be there."
Blake rolls her eyes, "in a life-or-death scenario?"
Yang smiles, "those are the best kinds! Blood-pumping, heart-racing, and guns-a-blazing is way more fun in person than on a screen."
"Yeah!" Ruby agrees, "but I still wanna see more. The Doctor is so cool! And his sonic and stuff are awesome too!"
"Are you just hoping for your own screwdriver?" Weiss asks, turning to her team leader.
Ruby blushes, "maaaaaybe."
"Dunce," Weiss comments, smirking softly.
Yang laughs, "says the girl just wanting to learn Earth's secrets and technologies."
This time, it was Weiss' turn to blush. "N-n-no… I just… I'm intrigued by a society's progression when they haven't been forced into a lifetime of fighting monsters."
"It is a strange thing to think about," Blake adds, "a world with no Grimm, no semblances or aura."
Ruby's smile flickers slightly, but returns as quickly as it left. "That's our job, isn't it? To make that world ours. Where no one has to worry about a lone Grimm at night killing their friends or family."
"It almost seems unattainable," Weiss continues. "But the Librarian can take us there, can't he?"
"It certainly seems so," Blake agrees.
"So we're going?" Yang asks. "We're staying with the Librarian?"
Each member of team RWBY looks at each other, a collective agreement forming in their minds. One by one, each member nods.
"Yep!" Ruby grins.
"Fine," Weiss agrees, a small smile on her lips.
Blake nods in agreement, grabbing an extra round of ammo for her pistol.
"Great!" Yang smiles.
Very quickly and efficiently, each member of team RWBY grabs a few items from around the room (a few books, some dust, a whetstone and such) before knocking on the blue T.A.R.D.I.S doors.
A few seconds later the Librarian opens the door and pokes his head out. "What?" He asks with a smirk, "done already?"
"You knew we would want to stay?"
After letting the four girls back into the T.A.R.D.I.S, the strange man escorted them to a few sleeping rooms. After dropping off Weiss, Yang, then Ruby, Blake stopped the Librarian in the doorway.
The Librarian nods to the cat-faunus. "Curiosity and all that. But I think you all have more personal reasons you don't want to say aloud."
Blake raises an eyebrow, "how so?"
"Well," the Librarian smirks, his eyes flashing darkly, "I wonder what an ex-terrorist could do with a time machine. Or, and I'm just speaking hypothetically, what if said terrorist could save an old friend from a lifetime of murder and savagery."
Adam, Blake realizes. True, she was hoping to maybe use the T.A.R.D.I.S to help stop the racism that has affected her race for the last hundreds of years.
"C-c-can you?" Blake asks. "Can I?"
Sighing, the Librarian places a hand on her head and rubs it. "I don't know. Some moments are meant to happen. But maybe, maybe, we could find a way."
A few tears begin to form in the girl's eyes. "Thank you," she whispers.
The Librarian walks to the door and turns back for a quick wink, "anything for a friend."
After the Librarian helped Ruby to her room, she took it upon herself to (ahem) 'scout' the surrounding rooms of the T.A.R.D.I.S.
Across the hallway from her room was the first room she checked. And also the last, for why would Ruby ever want to leave the weapons deck?
Eyes shining and jaw dropped, Ruby gazed upon dozens, if not hundreds, of guns, swords, and other weapons from who knows how many timelines or dimensions.
In the center of the room was a large flat console, with only one button. Ruby eagerly presses it, quickly turning on the machine. Holograms and lights sparkle around her into existence, listing names and terms Ruby had never heard of.
Quirk enhancements, Nicroboosting, StarkArmor, Alphatrix. Are all of these weapons? Ruby wonders as she scrolls through the list. It took 3 swipes of her finger to find something that caught her eye.
Crescent Rose upgrades. Pressing on it, a small red icon flashes. Requires original weapon to advance. Ruby frowns and tries pressing it again.
"It won't work without yours," the Librarian called out from behind her. Ruby turns around quickly, her mind racing to find an excuse.
"ELI and I were taking bets on how long it would take you to find this place. I guess I owe her a few bucks," he continues as he walks towards her.
"E-e-eli?" She stammers as the Librarian swipes through the weapons list.
Suddenly, a small blue circle pops up on the screen. "That would be me," it declares in a soft, feminine voice as it pulses and changes shape as it talks. "ELI stands for Electronic Linguistics Interface. I am a program designed to assist the Librarian-" ELI snickers slightly at the word "-and to help him with whatever he needs."
Ruby's eyes go wide as she watches the A.I talk. "That's. So. COOL!"
"See? She thinks I'm cool," ELI comments.
The Librarian sighs, "I never said you weren't. I simply acknowledged the abilities of another system. I said I'm sorry, okay?"
ELI sniffles, "you said JARVIS was awesome right in front of me!"
"If I let you have another run with an LMD will you forgive me?" The Librarian offers.
"Deal!" ELI exclaims before disappearing from the screen.
Shaking his head, the Librarian turns back to Ruby, "sorry about that. Where was I? Oh, yes, the upgrade."
Ruby turns back to the screen where it depicts Crescent Rose folding and unfolding. "So, if I let you borrow her, this machine could upgrade C.R?"
The Librarian nods, "I know how much you love your baby, but this might give you an edge up on the Grimm. Nothing too extreme, just a few modifications. I can't have the Ironwood getting his hands on a kyber crystal."
"A… what?" Ruby asks, confused.
"Never mind. It's up to you." The Librarian smiles before turning around. "We'll be starting the next part soon, so don't take too long."
"Thanks," Ruby adds as the door slides open.
"No problem," the Librarian calls back, "anything for a friend."
Punching the air in front of her, Yang yells loudly as she gets used to her new surroundings. Her father told her once that the best way to know a place was to feel the air around her fist.
So, as is tradition, Yang spent the last few minutes exercising her arms as she broke a sweat. When she finished, panting heavily, she felt a towel being draped across her head.
"I know you're one to punch first, ask questions later, but please try not to damage my ship. I'm still working out the kinks and I don't need a fist-sized hole in one of the walls," the Librarian jokes.
"No promises," she smirks, wiping her forehead with the towel. "Thanks, by the way, it's a really nice thing you did for Ruby."
The Librarian nods, "I've heard tales of the great team RWBY. To be honest, I'm not just doing this for her."
Yang frowns and her fingers twitch, "you're not?"
Holding his hands up in mock surrender, the Librarian chuckles nervously, "I collect stories, and the story of Remnant is one of the ones I've always wanted to visit. Imagine being able to get to know our favorite comic book character."
"So, we're just stories to you?" Yang asks as she shakes the sweat from her hair.
"No," he responds, shaking his head. "Every story is real, hidden somewhere in the vast sea of realities. I'm just the first one to live it."
"Do you do this often?"
The Librarian pauses for a moment. "What do you mean?"
Yang frowns, noticing the ice in his voice. "Ya'know… Traveling to worlds and meeting up with people."
Mentally sighing, the Librarian responds, "ah, sometimes. Some worlds or times I shouldn't, or even can't, intervene with. But I usually have the freedom to do so if I wish."
"I see," she comments, picking up one of her gauntlets and sliding it around her wrist. "Hey, is there a training arena here?"
"Yep," the Librarian smiles, "outfitted with recordings, teachings, sparring partners from across the realities."
Yang smiles, cracking her knuckles, "lead the way then, book boy."
The Librarian laughs, "it's been a while since anyone has called me that. But I think you should try to head back to the theater, we'll be starting soon."
The blonde bombshell seems to visibly deflate, "already?"
Chuckling, the man heads to the door, "how about this, next time we have the chance I'll go a few rounds with you in the arena."
"You?!" Yang exclaims, giggling.
The Librarian smirks, "I've got a few tricks up my sleeve."
"You better bring your A-game, then," Yang comments.
"Of course," the Librarian smiles, "anything for a friend."
Weiss planted her rapier into the ground and tried once again. After finding a room that screamed 'weapons testing' with all the burn marks and targets along the walls, Weiss decided to attempt the one skill she hadn't been able to master.
Come on! She tells herself, just Summon already! The ground beneath her forms a spinning white glyph as she focuses, but, just like all the other times, flickers and vanishes like a cold winter's breath.
Grunting, she removes her sword from the impaled flooring and sits down. Glaring at the hole in the ground, she curses silently.
"Why is it every Ice-Queen I meet ends up here?" the Librarian asks, stepping inside.
Weiss quickly stands up, pats her skirt clean of dirt, and glares at the strange man. "How long have you been listening?"
"Not long," he says, leaning down and looking at the hole, "but I think you should learn to ease up, I'm not going to hurt you."
Glaring at him, Weiss frowns and quickly snaps, "do you say that to every young woman you kidnap then eavesdrop on?"
"Nah, just the ones with ice powers." He laughs. "I think Elsa sat right where you did when she first tried using her powers for real."
"Elsa?"
The Librarian smacks himself upside the head and groans. "Shoot, Um, let's see. She was a young girl gifted with powers but was afraid of what would happen if she let them go wild. So, she and her family locked her powers up to keep everyone safe."
Weiss' eyes go wide, "that seems awful."
Nodding, the Librarian continues, saying, "but in a separate timeline, I took her here and helped her harness her powers. I remember her saying how hard it was and how much she wanted to give up."
"Did she?"
"No. She practiced every night for a full week until she was able to use her powers perfectly." The Librarian leans down and places a hand on the heiress' head. "And so will you."
"Really?" Weiss asks, looking down at the blade in her hands.
The Librarian nods, "I know you can. I'll help you, if you want."
Weiss nods slowly, "I would very much appreciate that, if it isn't too much trouble."
"Hey, what are friends for?" The Librarian asks for the fourth time. "But everyone else is heading to the theater now, so let's save that for a later date, deal?" The Librarian holds a hand out towards the girl as he stands up straight.
"Fine," she agrees after a moment, grabbing his hand.
"Then let's get going, shall we?"
The Librarian, followed closely by Weiss, enter the theater where they find Blake, Ruby, and Yang already waiting for them.
"What took you guys so long?" Yang asks. "We've been waiting for hours!"
Blake smacks Yang upside the head, "don't be rude." She turns to the Librarian as he sits down and picks up the remote. "Is everything ready?"
The Librarian nods, "yep! Let us continue in our voyage."
"Let's go!" Ruby exclaims joyously.
Raising the remote, the Librarian whispers, "hobey-ho,let's go."
Before he could press the button, Weiss asks, "you keep saying that, what does it mean?"
"It's the words of a great hero, Bobby Pendragon, who got it from his friend and ally Vo Spader. It means to move on, or to continue."
"Then… hobey-ho?" Blake asks.
"Hobey-ho," he nods.
"Hobey-ho!" Everyone exclaims as the next episode begins to play.
Tadaa! I'm not dead! Just feel like it. When I wrote this chapter, I didn't enjoy how it looked by Wednesday, so I decided to postpone till Friday. I hope y'all don't mind. It might be easier, to be honest. Let me know if you all prefer Wednesdays or Fridays.
Story-wise, wowzers. I had a BLAST writing this. So many things to notice, so many comments and threads. I really hope you all enjoyed some of my references and connections.
Also, I will love to hear your thoughts about the sub-plot I'm inventing. I really hope you don't mind me adding my own elements.
Now onto the abundant amount of comments I got for the last chapter! (Keep it up!)
Adislt: Yeah, starting at the beginning of NewWho. Hope you don't mind. Weeping Angels are terrifying, especially when they are first introduced. Maybe RWBY and the gang can run into them at some point.
Guest1: Well, I hope this chapter made you happy, then. I am already thinking about bringing more Remnant-ers in. Who would you like to see?
Thomasnewcombe111: Oh, that'll be a while, sorry. But it'll definitely be fun to write.
MidKnightMoonGlow99: Thanks for the awesome feedback! I hope you didn't mind my response. It's a blast to read such an in-depth review.
SunsetScrewball: I'm glad I could bring you this then! I cannot wait to write Dalek, which is one of my all-time favorite episodes. I hope you don't mind waiting, however.
Shane Ee1: Yeah, sorry. I hope you don't mind. It makes me happy to hear (read) you call one of my stories 'well-crafted', especially when I know about all the others I've seen. I am a man, my dude, so feel free to call me that.
Ranjira1988: That would be similar… I am definitely continuing, I hope you enjoy!
Wandclaw: As you wish! Luckily you followed the day before this update, LOL.
Please, feel free to follow and comment on predictions, thoughts, etc. I am always looking for new ways to improve my craft. Tell your friends!
Also, if you have the money, please think about supporting me. Maybe one day I won't have to juggle 2 jobs and can spend more time writing.
