A/N : This chapter , based on the synopsis of this story - we probably seen it coming .
The dinner went fairly well as they entered the last course of their meal — the dessert . Carlos had been nothing but very welcoming of Arizona's presence in his home tonight .
They had multiple conversations in which involving Callie and Carina — where the blonde would only nod in agreement whenever the couple spoke .
But it was safer to say that Arizona was the highlight of the night as many questions were directed to her instead of to the couple . Probably because the Torres hadn't seen Arizona in ages . Meanwhile for Callie and Carina — the Torres had received visit from them few times already . So , there wasn't much for the couple to talk about or asked about — compared to Arizona .
Not much , yet .
They still had their engagement to announce . Eventhough there wasn't a ring to show at least , yet — in which Carina had to get it resized because she had gotten the wrong size .
Callie had totally forgotten that they would be announcing their engagement at the dinner table tonight — the way they had plan earlier while they were on the flight . Instead — right now , her mind kept replaying back to the conversation she had with Arizona earlier in which she had let out few vicious , sharp words . The way Arizona's face changed as she turned and left her .. the blonde last words ... From across the dinner table , Callie managed to steal a glance at Arizona who was seated right in front of her . The blonde would zoned out whenever the conversation didn't include her , Callie noticed that .
Meanwhile for the police captain , she wasn't the type to easily forgot things — in fact , Carina was actually waiting for the right time to announce it . Probably at the end of the dessert .
Everyone at the dinner table somehow managed to notice : for everytime any questions been directed to Arizona , Callie would take turn to say nothing — just like Arizona did . Only Carina was talkative enough to insert her words and opinions here and there into the conversations . And Arizona would nod and smile a little whenever Carina spoke . And also when Callie talked — which the Latina didn't do much of it tonight .
"Which country will you be volunteering next , Arizona ?" Carlos asked eagerly .
"It's between Malaysia or Philippines . They are anticipating more of the heavy rain soon with flood warning . I am in the back up team for the next batch ."
"That's a very noble thing you still get going there ." Ed said , amazed .
"Yeah , it really is . Hats off to you . If given the chance , I would like to go volunteer too . If only I could take longer leave from my job for a while ." Carina agreed , feeling the need to insert herself into the conversation . If not , it would just be weird for their side of the table to be quiet everytime Arizona talked .
Arizona couldn't quite figure out if Carina said that only because she felt like she challenged to say it or if she really meant it but the blonde decided to responded politely . "Well , you could always hit me up when it's possible for you to get away from your work for a week or two . I'd be more than happy to introduce you to my contact for the volunteer work ." In the last moment she got to be around her ex , Arizona didn't think it would good to make a scene .
The blonde still had the Sullivan charity foundation going strong independently . As a matter of fact , she had been switching her volunteer work in between her foundation and HOPE . There was once , though - in which her foundation and other organizations worked together on this one huge project in Africa . It was a tiring for one whole month but Arizona was happy that the Sullivan Foundation got to contributed a little on a large scale project .
"Sure . Do they accept couple volunteer , though ?" Carina asked .
Aria awkwardly put the small piece of the chocolate cake into her mouth using her fork as she glance at Arizona with her side - eye . While Carlos and Ed together shared a silent concerning look .
"I'm sure they will have no problem with that as long as there's no conflict throughout the volunteering period ." Arizona replied flatly .
"We both can go sign up together then . Isn't that great , baby ?" Carine turned to her girlfriend as she squeezed Callie's hand in affection .
Arizona looked down at her plate uncomfortably .
"It will be a nice experience ." Callie nodded awkwardly . Felt like those six words barely out of her mouth but the whole table could still hear her , though .
Arizona said nothing to prolong the conversation . Instead , she just stabbed the brownies .
On the other side of the dinner table , Carina took the silence as the perfect time to make an announcement . "Speaking of nice and good . Callie and I , we have an announcement to make . A good announcement ."
Arizona already had her head up , looking at the couple .
"Carina .." Callie called . "Maybe not now ." She said a little bit too low , knowing that Arizona was looking at them .
"What ?" Carina turned her head , asking Callie to repeat her drowning words just now .
"Well , don't hold back now ." Ed suddenly interrupted . "Good things should be shared ."
Callie swore , this moment right now ? It was the one time she hated her brother in law .
"What's the announcement , Carina ?" Carlos asked , curious to know .
The dinner able is about to get awkward as hell . This is clearly not what I have planned . Callie wished she could hide under the table now .
"Callie and I .. we are engaged ." Carina announced happily . She couldn't hide her excitement .
"Dear Lord .." Aria muttered under her breath , staring at Arizona — almost on instant . Usually whenever her friends announcing they were engaged , she would response excitedly with — where is the ring , lemme take a look . But for this current situation , she just lost her words .
"Oh , wow ! Congratulations ." Ed said joyfully .
At least , someone at the dinner table had a proper response to the announcement .
And there was Carlos . He was happy too for her daughter . "Mija .. I am so happy for you . This is really a good news . Congratulations , both of you ." But Carlos couldn't help it but caught a glimpse of sadness on Arizona's face .
And now every eyes at the dinner table were focused on Arizona , waiting for the only person that had yet to say anything about the engagement to actually say something .
Arizona herself unsure on what she should say to the couple . Only thing , she found herself staring at the Latina .
Callie too , was looking at the other person .
Not even a word came out from either women but their gazes were still locked onto each other — it felt like as if the blue eyes were asking the brown eyes a big WHY .
Arizona felt like her heart was being stabbed by a slight betrayal . She knew she should say something but she just couldn't form a word now .
Clank !
The sound of a shattered glass coming from upstairs suddenly could be heard . It saved Arizona as everyone's attention wasn't on her anymore as by now , everyone had a concern look on their faces .
"What was that sound ?" Aria asked . "It wasn't Mia , for sure ." She added , clutching on the small baby monitor .
"Garcia !" Carlos called loudly . "Is that you upstairs ?"
"I am in the kitchen the whole time ." Nanny Garcia emerged from behind a wall .
"Mama ?" Callie already climbed the staircase .
And Arizona was right behind her .
"Mama ?" Callie pushed the door . "Oh my god ! Mama !"
Callie kneeled down next to Lucia who was lying , face down on the floor . She didn't bother with the fact there were glasses everywhere on the floor . "Mama ? Mama ?" She called , frantically as she repositioned her mother on her back .
"Callie . Callie ! She's not breathing ." Arizona said , as she checked Lucia's airway and pulse .
Callie didn't even realize that Arizona had followed her into the room .
"Call 911 !" Arizona yelled as she started the compression . "Now !"
"On it ." Ed replied with a phone in his hand .
Meanwhile Carlos just stood at the doorway , unable to say a word .
"We need an ambulance ..." Ed said into the line as he kept on speaking on the details that the emergency call handler needed .
The room was crowded enough , so Carina decided to stood freeze slightly afar to give them some space .
"Arizona , the dispatcher would like to talk to you ." Ed walked forward , putting the phone on loudspeaker .
Aria had walked into the room with Mia in her arms . She immediately regretted it upon seeing her Mama lying on the floor . Using her palm , she covered her daughter's eyes .
"I'm Arizona . Dr. Arizona Robbins ." Arizona said in between the compression .
"Is she breathing , Dr. Robbins ?"
"No , she's not . I have started the CPR for one minute ."
"Do you have an AED over there ?"
"Do we ?" Arizona looked up , asking to everyone in the room .
"No , we don't have it ." Carlos's replied . His voice was hoarse , as if he was holding back his tears .
"Okay , just keep going with the compression . The ambulance will be there in five minutes ."
Callie watched in horror as every second passed . She knew that every second matters . The longer her mama was down , the slimmer the chance Arizona or the first responder en route had to get her Mama back .
Arizona breathed heavily as she worked herself out on the compression with all the energy she had in herself . She wasn't planning on giving up , not when Callie was next to her , watching . And for some personal reason and a wish that she probably couldn't fulfilled — judging by how the dinner went just now , Arizona really couldn't give up .
You can't die . You don't get to tell the truth , left a ring and just die . Not tonight , Arizona screamed . The scream that could only be heard inside of her head .
Three painfully long minutes had gone by and there was no positive response , Callie had both her knees up under her chin as she nervously watched her Mama .
Oh , how she wished her Mama would just open her eyes again .
"They are here ." Ed announced as everyone cleared the doorway area , letting the paramedic to get inside the room .
"Please give us some space ." One of the paramedic said as he put down his medical bag . He then proceed to double check for a pulse , .
"We will take over from here , doc ." The other paramedic said to Arizona . The blonde nodded .
"Callie , come on ." Arizona extended her hand , helping Callie to get on her feet .
Callie said nothing but still , with Arizona's help , she got up , her eyes still trained on her Mama . She still had hope .
But for Arizona .. the hope had slowly fade away . But of course she didn't tell that to Callie who was clung onto her body for support . She had a feeling of just how this situation would headed . And what they all could hope for right now was more of a miracle .
"Charging !" The female paramedic said as they kept the resuscitation process going . "Clear !" The paramedic tried again for the fourth time . By now , Lucia had been down for fifteen minutes .
Arizona knew the moment was coming near .
"Still no sign of pulse . Charging again ." He shook his head .
"Clear !"
Still nothing .
"I'm sorry . We have to call it ." The female paramedic shook her head . "Time of death , 20:07 ."
Carlos closed his eyes upon hearing the words .
Aria was wiping her tears away with the back of her hand .
Ed was too stunned to say anything .
Nanny Garcia didn't even move .
Carina was at loss for words .
Callie felt like her heart was ripped away . And for a few seconds , she just couldn't breathe . She felt like she was choking on nothingness . And her body had gone light , weak as if she was flying . She knew she would be lying on the floor already by now had Arizona wasn't there to catch her , to support her body .
"Callie , breathe .." Arizona whispered into her ear . "I'm really sorry . But I need you to breathe , slowly ."
Callie started sobbing into Arizona's arms . "She's gone ?"
"Yes . I'm really sorry , Calliope ."
"Mama died ?" The tone in the Latina's voice sounded slightly confused .
Callie was in shocked , Arizona knew that . And she knew that no words in the world would manage to comfort the pain and ache Callie was feeling right now . So instead , Arizona just tightened her hug — making sure that Callie knew she was here for her to lean on , to clung onto .
And Carina ? She could only stare from the other side of the room as Callie fell raw and weak into Arizona's embrace .
A/N : A ring , hopeful request and a death .
I know this one seems to be a short update but please bear with me and my schedule . Also , a big YUP to that one review . Yes , now it seems like Arizona would definitely be staying with the Torres for a little while but not because of a storm like you suggested , LOL . Now I feel like my plotline has been a little bit predictable lol . As for Callie , I tried not to reveal much about her and why she is so pissed - FOR NOW 'cause why not ? Guess you have to stick a little while longer to understand - at least half of her bitterness . But still glad to see that some of you do understand Callie . Maybe Callie is pissed because she has the right to do so , maybe because of something else ? Because of medical condition ? Because of the fate of the world or maybe she is still pissed because of the simple reason - that she still loves Arizona ? I know I have always portrayed Arizona's POV better than Callie's because mainly - I see myself in my version of Arizona in this story . I probably need to try to focus more on Callie's POV . I mean , this story is called Resuscitate You for a reason :D
Also , I probably will need some time upload the next chapter as the next chapter would be emotionally challenging for me to write . Like Callie , I also lost mine months ago .
Believe it or not , I have been planning for this plotline of having Lucia dies since before I started writing the first chapter . Like around early last year . To have it written down now in a manuscript , I now feel its famliarity . Life is definitely something else . I keep thinking about my mother while writing this chapter .
