Disclaimer: I don't own Scream or any of the characters. I only own my OC.
A/N: I'm glad people enjoyed the first chapter gives me more motivation to write. Also I saw Halloween Kills and I hate saying this but...I didn't end up loving it as I thought I would :( Don't get me wrong I still liked it but there were so many missed opportunities especially with the OG characters. My favorite scene has to be the confrontation between Lindsey Wallace and Michael. She fought well and (spoiler) made it out! Loved her character. Fun fact, Scarlett's sister's name is named after Lindsey Wallace. Yet another reference to Halloween.
Tremors is mentioned in this chapter. It's actually one of my favorite creature feature films. Honestly if you haven't seen it you have been missing out. Also I based Scarlett's bedroom off of Sabrina Spellman's from Sabrina: The Teenage Witch. I love her bedroom and I feel that Scarlett would have a bedroom similar to hers.
Chapter 2: Late night visit
"I want to watch a movie that has romance." There was a pout on twelve year old Lindsey Mitchell as she complained to her older sister. The preteen looked very different compared to the seventeen year old.
Unlike Scarlett who had red hair, Lindsey's hair was dark brown. Her eyes were not brown but instead green. She had their mother's eyes and father's hair color.
Luckily for Lindsey the hair was the only thing she got from their father because everything else was their mother. Lindsey was just twelve but Scarlett already knew she would be just as beautiful as their mother once she was older.
Scarlett was holding onto the video tape she rented. "This has romance."
"I seriously doubt a movie called Tremors has romance in it." Lindsey argued stubbornly.
"You know I could have rented IT for us to watch." Scarlett gave her a serious expression. "Why don't I just go back to the video store and ask Randy for the movie."
The redhead made a show of getting up from the couch but sat right back down when Lindsey reached for her arm. She smiled because she knew that would work.
Her little sister wasn't a fan of clowns, especially when it came to Pennywise. She'd only seen the horror flick once and she had nightmares for weeks afterwards.
"Not funny." Lindsey muttered.
"Give the movie a chance." Scarlett insisted. "I think you'll like it."
Lindsey pursed her lips the same way Scarlett would. "Fine, I'll give it a chance."
Tremors, which was a creature feature, and as expected by Scarlett, captured Lindsey's attention. From the moment the giant worm made its appearance on screen the pre-teen was amazed.
Scarlett had already seen the movie with Randy but she was still just as entertained as she was the first time she'd seen it. She wasn't lying when she said there was romance in the movie. There was romance between the characters of Val and Rhonda.
Scarlett had taken a liking to the character of Rhonda because she wasn't the stereotypical female lead in a horror movie, even in a creature feature. She was smart and a lot of the other characters in the movie depended on her knowledge to survive.
As the movie was finally nearing its end, Lindsey cheered along with her when Kevin Bacon yelled his iconic line of: "Can you fly, you sucker?!"
Lindsey even threw popcorn into the air, causing a few to fall into Scarlett's hair. The redhead laughed it off, happy that her sister enjoyed the movie.
Once she calmed down, Lindsey paid attention to what was happening on the TV. The characters of Val and Rhonda were talking, a little awkwardly on Val's end, before he finally got the courage and kissed her.
"I wish I could experience a kiss that passionate." Lindsey said in a dreamy voice as the characters of Val and Rhonda continued kissing. The credits were now rolling over them.
"Slow your roll there, kiddo. You're twelve, not twenty." Scarlett replied, amused. "You don't need to think about that."
"Don't you?" Lindsay asked her older sister. "You're older than me so you must think about it." She blinked. "Or have you never experienced a kiss like that before?"
The sad truth was that Scarlett had never even been kissed before. She'd never even been on a date. There was one time during her Junior year when she'd been asked out by one of her classmates, Bradley Louis, but he never showed up to pick her up. She'd been upset and went to confront him the next day but when she did she was shocked to see the black eye he was sporting.
Bradley didn't tell her how he got it. In fact, he didn't even say much about the injury. He just looked panicked when she was near him, eyes shifting all over the hallway. It looked like he was scared that he'd get caught with her. So she didn't get further upset when he scurried off. She never did get an explanation on why he bailed, and what was with the black eye.
He ended up moving a month later anyway.
She'd never been asked out after that. Not that she was dying to get asked out...but at seventeen she thought she would at least have had her first kiss already.
Except she hadn't.
But her twelve year old sister didn't need to know that.
"Wow, look at the time." Scarlett 's brown eyes wandered to the clock that was beside them. She let out an exaggerated yawn. "It's time for you to go to bed."
Lindsey whined.
Scarlett shook her head. "No seriously, we both need to start getting ready for bed. If mom gets home and sees that we're still up then we'll both get in trouble."
Lindsey didn't argue about that. Their mother tended to be laid back and not really strict but since she was working late at nights at the hospital she didn't want them to be awake when she got home. She tended to get out between twelve or three in the morning. It was past ten o'clock now, and it was a school night.
Lindsey started to drag herself from the couch. Just as she was about to go into the hallway, she turned to face Scarlett. Her posture was straight and her green eyes reflected seriousness. This caught Scarlett's attention.
"I just want to say that when you were at the video store earlier, dad called."
Scarlett tried her best to look indifferent. "Oh?"
Lindsey's expression let her know she wasn't buying her older sister's impassive attitude. "I know you do care, Scarlett. You may act like you don't but I know you do."
Scarlett said nothing in response to that. Her little sister sounded way too earnest, and not only that but what she said wasn't a lie. As much as she was mad at her father, and as much as she liked to say she didn't want him in her life, she did miss him. She missed him a lot.
"I'm not saying you should forgive him right away." Lindsey quietly told her. "But he is our dad and he's been getting better." She softened her green eyes. "He's trying, which says a lot."
Scarlett continued to silently stare at her, progressing her words. It left her feeling even more conflicted about their father because Lindsey had a point. Their father was trying to get better. If he really was scum he would have continued to live carelessly.
"Just at least consider talking to him the next time he calls." Lindsey added and before Scarlett could respond the twelve year old made her way to the bathroom.
The seventeen year old was left alone in the living room with what Lindsey said repeating in her head. Getting a hold of her emotions, Scarlett got up from the couch to turn off the TV. Since Lindsey was using the hallway bathroom. Scarlett went to use the one in her mother's bedroom.
Unlike most houses in Woodsboro, theirs was only one story. It did have four bedrooms and a pretty spacious backyard with a rose garden. It once belonged to her grandmother but after her passing she left it to her daughter Nora. Scarlett was eight and entering the third grade when she moved to Woodsboro with her family. Her little sister Lindsey had barely turned three.
Once her teeth were brushed, Scarlett walked to her bedroom. She was ready to get into her pajamas and go to sleep. As she was about to open her drawer to take out her pajamas, she heard three knocks on her bedroom window.
The sudden knock would have scared Scarlett had the knocks not been familiar sounding ones. There was only one person she knew that knocked that certain way, and because of that she went to open her bedroom window with no hesitation.
Scarlett tilted her head, curious and a bit amused as she stared at her friend Billy Loomis. "Hey, what are you doing here?"
Billy made his way inside as Scarlett stood to the side to give him space. "I was coming back from Sidney's and since I was in the neighborhood I wanted to know what you were up to."
Scarlett held up one finger. "First of all, you're technically always in the neighborhood. You live three houses down." She pointed out and then brought up another finger. "And second of all, you knew what I was up to. Remember movie night with Lindsey."
"That's right." Billy nodded as he walked around her bedroom. Even though he was walking casually it still appeared as if he was trying to find anything that was different about her bedroom. He wouldn't though. Scarlett's bedroom remained the same as Freshman year.
Her mother was the one who helped Scarlett decorate her bedroom the way she wanted. Lindsey liked describing her bedroom's style as magical. The bedroom walls were colored violet and when the lights were off the glow in dark stars on them would shine. Several posters of bands and artists were hung on her walls. Mazzy Star, Tori Amos, TLC, and Lauryn Hill just being a few that were up.
Her bedspreads were a mixture of textures and patterns like plaid, florals, and stars. Instead of stuffed animals on her bed she had several throw pillows with star and moon patterns on them. And in front of her bed was a velvet ruffle chaise.
Billy was still gazing around, and she waited patiently. She didn't think anything weird about Billy being in her bedroom. He'd been in her bedroom before. They were friends of course, so nothing scandalous ever happened. Not that she would ever do anything like that with him. She wouldn't do that to Sidney. Besides it wasn't like she felt anything other than platonic feelings for Billy. It was weird to think about him in a romantic way.
Billy finally stopped with his analyzing and turned to face her. "What movie did you end up seeing?"
"Tremors." Scarlett answered as she took a seat on her chaise.
"The one with the giant worms?" Billy asked as he sat down next to her. Since the chaise was on the smaller side there was hardly any room between them. Scarlett wasn't uncomfortable though. She was too happy to talk about the movie night she had with Lindsey.
Scarlett nodded her head with a smile. "Yeah, Lindsey ended up liking it. I had to reassure her there was romance in it but by the end of it I think she actually liked it for the giant worms."
Billy said nothing after, just stared at her. The longer the silence lasted the more confused she became. Her brown eyes widened when he began to lean towards her. "What are you doing?"
Billy stopped leaning. He let out a low chuckle. He used one of his hands to touch her hair. Scarlett was frozen in place but let out a breath of relief when she saw that he had a piece of popcorn in his hand.
So that's why he did that. Scarlett felt ridiculous thinking he was trying to do something else. Billy of course wouldn't do that to Sidney. He'd been going out with Sidney for two years now. She doubted he would ever do anything to ruin his relationship with her.
"You had a piece of popcorn in your hair." Billy explained as he flicked the popcorn to the small trash can she had in her bedroom.
"Oh...thanks." Scarlett laughed, feeling way less weird. She then narrowed her eyes on Billy. "So...is asking me what I was up to tonight the real reason you decided to visit?"
"I was worried about you." Billy answered seriously, causing her to furrow her eyebrows. "At lunch you said your dad's been trying to contact you. I wanted to know how you really were."
Scarlett's face dropped as she started playing with her fingers. Her eyes were once again focused on her unpolished nails. "I'm fine, Billy.
"Scarlett." Billy gruffly called out her name. Scarlett shifted her eyes to him again, and that's when she saw his expression. She thought his expression seemed stern and concerning at the same time. "How are you really?"
Scarlett couldn't take it anymore. Not after what her little sister said. She couldn't keep up with this indifferent persona anymore. Besides, this was Billy. He'd seen her cry her eyes out a few times and during those times he'd even comforted with his friendly presence.
So that's why she decided to be honest with him. The redhead bit her bottom lip. "Alright...here's the truth. I'm conflicted."
"Conflicted?" Billy repeated slowly.
"Yes conflicted about my dad and I don't know..." Scarlett trailed off. "Maybe Lindsey's right. He has been working on getting better. Maybe I really should consider talking to him."
"So you want to basically give him another chance?" Billy questioned flatly.
Scarlett nodded her head. "Not right away but I guess eventually."
There was silence and then Billy ended it with a humorless laugh. "You're not fuckin' serious are you?"
His reaction didn't sit well with Scarlett. "I think I am. If it was your mom trying to reach out to you wouldn't you want to fix things?"
Billy went deathly quiet as he clenched his jaw. His intense brown eyes darkened. "That's not the same thing."
"Why not?" Scarlett questioned.
"Because my mother's not a fuckin' alcoholic Scarlett." Billy hissed at her.
Scarlett leaned back, almost falling off the chaise, face flushed with emotion. She started to blink rapidly, quietly telling herself not to let tears fall down her face.
Billy realized his mistake. "Shit." He whispered. His face relaxed. "Scarlett, I didn't mean it like that."
"You didn't?"' Scarlett muttered, still unable to look at him. It wasn't often that Billy lost his temper with her...but when he did it always made her feel small.
"I didn't mean to speak to you like that." Billy clarified in a softer tone. "It's just that...you know how I get whenever someone mentions my mom."
Scarlett lowered her eyes. "Yeah, I know."
Last year had been awful for not only one of her closest friends, but for two of them. Billy's parents split up and his mother left him, and Sidney's mother was murdered. She knew one was much worse than the other but the point was that both of her friends had been in the lowest part of their lives.
Scarlett's mind went back to the night when Billy told her his mother had left. It had been unusual to say the least.
To this day she wondered why he hadn't gone to Sidney's house to seek comfort. Scarlett figured that he would have wanted his girlfriend to be there for him. That seemed like the normal thing to do.
Except he hadn't gone to see Sidney, he instead went to Scarlett. The redhead found him in her bedroom, sitting on her bed, with his head hanging low. His brown locks were hiding his face so she couldn't see his face at first. As she figured out soon enough, he came in through her bedroom window. She remembered being beyond confused seeing him in her bedroom but whatever questions she had for him went away once he spoke. His voice, although rough, oozed with emotion as he said three words.
"My mom left."
After that he finally looked into her eyes and that's when she saw the tears.
Out of the goodness of her heart, and because she honestly thought she was being a good caring friend at the moment, Scarlett let him lean on her as he cried. It was sad as much as it was shocking because she had never seen that side of Billy before.
In fact, she hadn't seen him cry that way again since that day in her bedroom. Billy letting himself cry in front of her let Scarlett know that he really must have trusted her. And as it turned out it went both ways. Scarlett trusted him enough to see her at her lowest when it came to her father's drinking and him leaving home.
"I'm sorry." Billy apologized.
"I know you are." Scarlett faintly replied. She cleared her throat. "I know you mean well, Billy. You're just trying to be a good friend."
"Yeah." Billy muttered. A grin slowly made its way onto his face. "And you're too kind, too forgiving."
Scarlett was bemused but went along with it. She gave a quiet laugh. "You say that like it's a bad thing."
Billy's grin started to disappear. "A kind heart can't always get you what you want." He somberly told her.
"But I don't want anything." Scarlett sobered up a bit as she answered. Although, she really did not know what he meant by that.
Billy gazed into her brown eyes. "Some of us do."
Scarlett's bedroom door suddenly opened with her little sister making her way inside. "Hey, can I borrow your CD player I can't find―" Lindsey immediately stopped talking when she saw her older sister with one of her guy friends she recognized. An expression that said 'you're busted' appeared on her face. "Oh, what's this? Mom said no boys are allowed in your room when she's not home."
Scarlett let out a huff as she walked over to her little sister. "Calm down, it's only Billy." She didn't see the disapproving way Billy raised his eyebrows at that.
"And he's a boy. Which means you're breaking the rules." Lindsey stated with a shrug.
Scarlett crossed her arms over her chest. "I seem to recall mom also saying you can't eat candy after you brush your teeth yet I know for a fact that you have a bag of Smarties in your room."
Lindsey and Scarlett then started to have a sisterly stare off which ended with the youngest sibling giving up first. She let out a huff. "I won't say anything if you won't."
"Deal." Scarlett reached for her CD player. "Here. Now go to sleep."
"Goodnight." Lindsey said, and then with a smile she started making kissing noises at them.
Scarlett rushed to push her out of her bedroom and closed the door. Lindsey definitely had her wise moments when it came to giving advice, but she was twelve years old. She was a child, and it was only natural for her to do childish things.
When she turned around to look at Billy she had a sheepish smile. "Like I said before, she has her bratty moments. And I've told her countless times now that we are friends." She explained. "Which she knows, she's just a butt. She's like this with Randy too."
"With Randy too, huh?" Billy repeated flatly.
Scarlett didn't pay much attention because she was looking at her clock next to her nightstand. "It really is getting late and I have to go to sleep."
"Right." Billy said as he got up. He took slow steps towards her. "Once again, I am sorry."
Scarlett, in a friendly manner, reached for one of his wrists and gave it a soft tap. Billy followed her hand back to her side. "Honestly, it's fine. No need to apologize anymore."
Billy nodded his head. A few pieces of his brown hair fell into his eyes. He started to make his way to the window again only for Scarlett to stop him with a smile.
"Billy, you can use the front door. My mom's not here yet anyway."
Billy's lips quirked, and his brown eyes lit up in a way that made Scarlett think he must have thought of something funny. "Goodnight, Scarlett."
"Night, Billy." Scarlett told him one last time and watched as he exited her bedroom. She closed the door behind him, and then walked over to her drawer. She opened it to finally take out her pajamas. Once changed, the redhead did one last sweep of the house to make sure everything was locked. Everything was in fact locked. She then double checked that Lindsey was in her room. She was already in bed and had on headphones from the CD player.
As she entered her bedroom, Scarlett noticed that her window was the only thing that was left open. She was too tired to care that she had foolish changed while it had been open. Her insecurities told her nobody would want to watch her. Still, she shut it before getting into bed. She snuggled her blankets, welcoming sleep. Soon enough sleep came to take her away and Scarlett gladly followed.
Scarlett Mitchell went to sleep oblivious of the horrors she would learn tomorrow morning.
