Okay, we're going from the Aleheather wedding back to that BIG leap into the future. This chapter takes place slightly before the epilogue of "Trials and Tribulations" when a 16 year old Diego won his first Olympic gold medal in fencing. With the Winter Olympics around the corner, I REALLY wanted to do an Olympic themed chapter since I literally have an 'Olympian' that I put into this fanfic. And yeah, I know fencing is in the summer Olympics and not the winter Olympics but… whatever! This is my fic, I'm a grown woman, and I can do what I want! Lol. XD Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the chapter! :)
({No POV})
"En garde!"
"Pret!"
"Allez!"
The official called out her verbal marks as two young men collided on the strip.
It was the gold medal men's fencing match of the Olympic Games between France and Spain.
The match was between 26 year old Jules Dupont (a French Fencing prodigy and winner at the two previous summer Olympic Games) and challenged by a fresh contender who was also considered to be quite the prodigy himself.
Jules's competition for the gold was a 16 year old he had been seeing winning on the World's circuits and had a reputation even before starting fencing.
Actually, his identity was pretty well known practically ever since his birth.
He was none other than son of Spanish Politician Alejandro Burromuerto Ledvora and world renowned celebrity talk show host Heather Wilson Burromuerto.
Diego Burromuerto Wilson.
At first Jules did not think much of some over privileged teenager in his eyes moving in to take him off his championship pedestal… until now.
He now realized that he had massively underestimated Diego and was now regretting all his choices he made of staying out and partying the previous night in thinking he was going to have an 'easy win'.
This was immediately proved as Diego parried and immediately took the opportunity to quickly thrust into a body hit as the official called out, "HALT! Point to España!"
The audience was on the edge of their seats at this now very close match that now came down to a match point.
Especially for two particular spectators in the audience, Alejandro and Heather.
At first Alejandro was so absorbed in their son's match that he hardly noticed that Heather (who usually remained very 'collected' during Diego's competitions) let out to herself a subtle yet victorious, "Yes!" He looked over to see her trying to maintain her composure and posture if not for keeping her eyes glued to Diego and clenching in fists in an attempt to 'contain herself'.
Alejandro would have kept looking at his wife in intrigue if his mother on his other side didn't stand up and start clapping as she called out, practically cheering in proud delight at her grandson being so close to the gold, "Excelente Diego! El más excellente!"
As soon as Elena sat down she immediately looked to the man next to her, who seemed to be pretty peeved that Jules was losing, and commented proudly, "That's my grandson."
The man hardly paid her any attention (mainly that he seemed to be on the verge of losing a bet with a friend) as Elena proceeded to clap and cheer on Diego as the final match point in the bout started.
With Elena now being retired from her position as CEO and taking more just an 'advisory role' for the company with José having taken the company over for her and Gerardo still working at the moment, she now used her free time to travel, visit, and attend events for her grandchildren.
Especially now that Diego was in the Olympics, she had been to every match with exception of his first night of competition since she had another grandchild event that she felt she had to 'attend to'.
But, Diego and Jules got reset and in their stances until the official called them to action. Counter after counter, everyone was tettering closer and closer to the edge until… Diego landed the strike.
The whole crowd erupted in cheers and some jeers at the upset as the official raised Diego's arm as the victor.
And while like most, he felt the urge to lose his mind at completing his goal and childhood dream of winning a gold medal in his favorite sport, but… he held back and maintained a calm persona as he did the expected sportsmanship gesture of shaking hands with his still in shock opponent before facing toward the crowd in practically a standing ovation.
He removed the foil mask from his head before holding up above his head toward the audience as he took it all in with a beyond proud, confident, and victorious grin on his face. He looked around the cheering crowd until he finally saw his family.
His grandmother clapping and cheering in practically sheer joy as she blew him a kiss and gave him a wave, which he humored his abuela by catching it and smiling, with his father clapping and looking beyond proud as he gave him a smirk and a wink, making Diego smirk slightly.
And then… Diego looked to Heather, seeming so sure of it this time.
His mother hardly ever gave him any sort of 'praise' or 'encouragement' his whole life and he was positive this had to be it.
After all, what mother wouldn't show how proud she was when her child just won Olympic gold?!
But… he was disappointed. While she was standing and clapping, her expression still held its usual cold and unreadable aire to it, practically looking almost unimpressed by it all to him.
Diego just kept looking at his mother in total confusion until his coach distracted him as he came over and started patting him on the back and encouraging him to celebrate.
He took the invitation, but… it still didn't stop him from looking back to the crowd to see his mother still holding that same expression.
2 days later
Heather was sitting in her dressing room back in Madrid as she proceeded to do her usual 'look over' before going on air.
Currently she was smirking and also rolling her eyes at the dozen red roses Alejandro had sent her before the show this time since he sent them after the previous 2 times.
Eventually her smirk faltered and she looked behind her to ensure she was alone and her door was shut as she opened a drawer in her vanity.
Heather reached inside only to pull out a peculiar and incredibly thick binder. She opened it to reveal only the first and minor fraction of its contents that all summed up one thing.
Diego.
Inside were various pictures of him from fencing dating all the way to when he was 6 and first started fencing after begging her and Alejandro to sign him up for it after watching sword fighting in various movies he saw.
Everything from him competing to him just taking a picture in his uniform holding up medals, trophies, or even just his saber. Heather kept going over the pictures and had a look of almost fascination to her eyes as she kept flipping through the laminated pages and practically seeing her son's evolution from a small child to a young man.
And that was prompted right as she got to the next empty page and took the magazine she had sitting on the surface of her vanity facing down.
Slowly, she flipped it over to reveal its cover.
It was Diego front and center in his fencing lamé, gold medal around his neck, and holding his saber in a way to prop it on his shoulder as he smiled at the camera.
Heather wasted no time as she carefully tore the cover off the magazine and tucked it into the blank laminated sleeve within the binder.
She was about to close it until she looked at her latest addition to Diego's 'book of achievement' as a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she looked very proud of her one and only child's individual success.
Heather almost affectionately touched the page for a moment until she heard knocking on her door and heard her assistant say, "Heather? Estás lista?"
Heather looked back and responded straight and to the point, "Sí, un momento."
After that, Heather slowly closed the binder and put it back into the drawer before standing up and smoothing out her dress before making her way to the stage to start the latest episode of her talk show.
So… looks like there are more and more layers to Heather and Diego's dynamic as mother and son. But, again, I wanted to show another example to refer to that Heather does love Diego and is VERY proud of him and what he's accomplished on his own. So then we have our big question here. Why does Heather seem almost insistent on not wanting to show how she feels toward her son? This is a big plot point I am going to be building up to in this fic so stay tuned and make your guesses, friends! Also, I hope you enjoyed seeing 'grandma Elena' just living her best retired life as practically the 'world's greatest abuela' and using her free time to be there for her grandchildren. This will also be leading to something that I will leave you all to make guesses on. ;) Either way, I hope enjoyed seeing more older Alejandro and Heather as parents and getting a bit more insight on Diego. As always, thanks you for reading and constructive reviews are ALWAYS appreciated. Plus, PLEASE keep your submissions coming in a review or message for things you'd like to see in this fanfic series! :D
Take care, best wishes, and stay classy!
