After Alexa got a call from Logan, she immediately went to his apartment. When he opened the door, she was horrified. "You look awful."
He had dark circles under his eyes, was unshaven, and looked very tired. He waved off. "Yeah, I know. Come in."
"Why did you call me?" She asked after they sat down. He sighed deeply. "No matter what I try, I seem to be doing everything wrong."
"What are you talking about?"
"Mia is sick. It's not a bad thing, just a stomach virus. But ... she doesn't want my help. The only thing she wants is Camille."
"Logan, that's not your fault. It is quite normal for children to want their mothers nearby when they are sick. But that doesn't mean that you're a bad father. What did Camille say about it?"
Guilt spread across his face. He bowed his head. "She doesn't know yet."
Alexa's eyes widened. "Logan, how long has Mia been sick?"
"Over a week."
"And you didn't tell Camille?"
He got up and started walking up and down the room. "You don't understand this. Camille took care of Mia for four years. And I can't even make it for a whole month. She'll be extremely disappointed."
"I disagree ... But now something else ... Why am I actually here?"
He looked at her desperately. "Can you try talking to Mia? I just don't know what to do anymore."
She sighed and nodded. "Sure, of course."
Mia was lying on the bed. Her cheeks were flushed and she looked pretty exhausted. Alexa went to her and hugged her. "Hi, sweetie. How do you feel?"
Mia sniffed softly. "I want my mommy."
Alexa stroked Mia's head reassuringly. "Then why don't you just call her?"
"Daddy says Mommy is too busy."
Alexa shook her head and took out her cell phone. "We can give it a try." She dialed Camille's number and waited.
"Lex? Hi, what's up?"
"Hi, Camille. Do you have a few minutes? Here is someone who would like to talk to you."
"Yes, I have time."
Alexa smiled, activated the phone's speaker and placed it on the bed next to Mia. Then she nodded to Mia. Mia looked down at the cell phone. "Mommy?"
"Hi, sweetie. How are you?"
"Mommy, I'm sick."
"Oh, my poor angel. I'm sorry to hear that."
"I miss you."
"I miss you too, sweetie. Is your daddy taking good care of you?"
Tears suddenly formed in Mia's eyes. "I'm sorry, Mommy. I disappointed you. Please don't be angry with me."
"Mia, what are you talking about?"
"Daddy is sad and I promised you I'd take care of him. But I didn't do it. I'm so sorry."
"Oh, sweetie. Please don't be sad. You didn't do anything wrong. It's my fault. I should never have asked you to do anything like that."
"But I want to be there for Daddy."
"I know, sweetie, I know. And that's so wonderful of you. But you don't have to do this alone. If you think something is wrong, you can either call me, Lex, Carlos, or Jo at any time, okay? Then we'll help you."
"Are you sad, Mommy?"
"No, Mia, I'm not sad," Camille said. "And you don't have to be sad either. Everything is fine. I love you."
"Love you too, Mommy," Mia said, yawning.
"Are you tired?"
"Yes. Can you tell me something until I fall asleep?"
"Of course. Shall I tell you what I did today?"
"Yes, please," Mia murmured, closing her eyes as Camille told her about her day. Finally, Alexa picked up the phone again, turned off the speaker, and whispered, "She fell asleep."
"She sounded so sad."
"It's probably because Logan didn't want her to call you."
"What?"
"He thinks you'll be disappointed when you find out that he can't take care of Mia."
"How can he think such a thing?"
"Because he's Logan."
Camille sighed. "Can I speak to him?"
"Yes, of course. Give me a second." She left the bedroom and went back to Logan. "It's your turn," she said, putting the phone in his hand. He glanced at the display and his eyes widened in horror. "Did you-?"
"Yes, I did. Now talk to her."
He bit his lip and then held the phone to his ear. "Camille?"
"Logan ... why?"
He closed his eyes. "I was afraid that you would be angry or disappointed. I didn't want you to regret leaving Mia with me."
"Do you think I didn't make any mistakes in the beginning? This takes time. Besides, I thought we agreed we had no more secrets from each other. Do you want to start it again?"
"No, of course not. I'm sorry. Mia was so sad and I didn't know what to do."
"That was my fault. I asked her for something when I said goodbye at the airport, but I didn't think about what that might do to her. We both made a mistake."
"Do you think there will be more mistakes in the future?"
"Probably. But as long as we stick together, I'm sure we can do it."
"Yes, you are right."
"You sound tired."
"I know."
"Mia is sleeping now. You should do the same."
"I'll try it."
"You promise?"
"Yes," he said, smiling slightly. "I miss you."
"I miss you too."
They were silent for a moment because neither of them knew how to put the feelings inside them into words. Finally, Logan said, "I'll call you tomorrow."
"Okay."
"Bye," he said softly, hanging up. He handed the cell phone back to Alexa. "Thanks, Lex."
She waved off. "No problem. What did she say?"
"That I should go to sleep."
She nodded. "Good idea. Then call me later and tell me how it was."
He smiled and waved to her as she went to the door and left the apartment.
Logan had slept little more than half an hour when Mia's voice woke him up.
"Daddy?"
He opened his eyes. "Hey, princess. What's wrong?"
"Can we cuddle?"
He felt a warm feeling of relief at this question. "Of course. Come here." He pulled her onto the couch. Mia curled up and put her head on his chest. "I love you, Daddy."
"I love you too, sweetie."
