Chapter 7:

When Julia awoke the next morning, naked in the marital bed, she remembered her reflection. She wanted to change her life; she had thought so hard. But it was impossible. How could she have believed for a moment that she could have the life she wanted. She was just a woman after all. She was married and had two daughters. William and she did not have the same life at all. They barely knew each other. Maybe he was just taking advantage of her? She had felt something extraordinary. Unique. But maybe he did not feel any of that.

Julia's face fell. He could be a man of conquests. He was so beautiful and so perfect. So smart and gallant. How could he still be alone? Surely, he was not interested in any serious relationship.

Julia's mood, which had felt so euphoric since the evening at the Brackenreids, had suddenly felt gloomy that morning.

Eventually, she mustered up her courage and decided to redirect her own life. She was to visit William Murdoch. After all, what was she risking? She just wanted to talk to him. She had nothing to do today. Like every other day, by the way. She spent her entire days tidying up the house, waiting for her children to come home from school and for her husband to come home from work. A few hours less spent in her house would not turn her into a dump. They could well do without her for a while.

When Julia landed at Station 4, she was overwhelmed to notice how active she was. How she did not have the same life as those men running around and discussing murder cases. How she wished she had this chance. To have the right to do as she pleased.

She was looking at the Station in detail with eyes shining with admiration when someone called out to her.

"Mrs. Brenks? What are you doing here?"

Julia turned around and saw Inspector Brackenreid looking at her with almost worried eyes.

"Is everything alright? You have a problem?" insisted the chief inspector.

"No… It's fine Inspector Brackenreid, don't worry…"

Thomas saw the young woman looking around absently. What was she doing here?

"What are you doing here then?" Brackenreid asked again.

"I…I'm looking for Detective Murdoch."

Thomas frowned. She was looking for Detective Murdoch. Why?

"He's in his office..."

When Thomas saw the young woman frown, he pointed to the detective's office.

"Thank you…"

Thomas looked suspiciously at the young woman heading towards his best detective's office. Was there a problem with Dr. Brenks? Was Station 4 going to be in trouble?

William looked up from the newspaper he was studying, sitting at his desk, when he heard the door open softly.

"Mrs. Brenks?" William could not hide the amazement in his voice when he saw her enter his office.

He almost jumped up to greet her and watched her close the door behind her.

"What is happening?" he wondered.

"William…" she hesitated, stepping slightly closer to him, but keeping a safe distance, aware of the large glass windows that offered a great view of the Station and its agents. "I wanted to talk to you about what happened the other day…"

William lowered his head. So that was it. She was going to tell him that this should not happen again. That she loved her husband and that her life was already mapped out.

"I loved…"

William quickly looked up in shock. What had she said?

"I can't think of anything but you...I... I wanted to know if you felt the same way...Or if this was just a game for you..."

The young man was stunned by her questions. He thought he was going to jump for joy. She felt the same as he did.

"It was not a game. I have strong feelings for you Julia… you are exceptional."

William took a step closer to her, but did not allow himself more, being acutely aware of his surroundings.

"I think of you every moment of the day… I can't do anything at work anymore." confessed the young man with a bright look. "I have never experienced this."

Julia simply looked at William for a few moments, her eyes impenetrable, before smiling.

"We are crazy…"

"Yes…" William smiled in turn. "I am madly in love with you…"

William watched as Julia's cheeks slowly flushed. She looked away, a smile on her face.

"I'll go…" Julia said softly.

She turned away and reached for the doorknob before William spoke hurriedly.

"Wait! When can I see you again?"

Julia looked at him playfully and said, "Hopefully soon…"

Note: They confessed their feelings! But things have only just begun. How are they doing now?
