Chapter 1: An Unexpected Sorting

September 1, 1993

James and Lily Potter had been married for fifteen years, and those were the best years they could ever imagine.

To start with, they had kids. Harry and Liana Potter. Liana was actually starting Hogwarts tomorrow, and they couldn't wait to see her get Sorted. Harry was always getting caught in trouble one way or another - even when he hadn't done anything. It was all Voldemort. Stupid, idiotic, Voldemort. Liana, however, was... a bit more outspoken. She could be rather insolent and rude at times, to the point which not many people could stand her. (And she couldn't stand them either.)

While sustaining their marriage, they'd sustained their friendships. Lily kept in touch with all her friends from Hogwarts, and James was still a Marauder.

Though one was a traitor, and one was dead.

James found it difficult to believe that Sirius would try to kill him. Sirius Black. Maybe he was being selfish, but he found it impossible to believe that all those years of friendship meant nothing to Sirius. But James had believed it, and the sadness inside him was too much to bear. He didn't cry. He hadn't cried about it once. He just felt hollow, like there was nothing inside him.

Lily had been worried. Lily had watched as James had become a zombie - literally. He had become lifeless. It was hard.

Sirius had been sent to Azkaban, of course… but now he was on the run.

He'd escaped. He'd escaped from Azkaban.

But they couldn't worry about that now. They were at Hogwarts, and they could protect both their children. Lily worked at Hogwarts as the Ancient Runes teacher, and James was an Auror. At every given opportunity, he would sneak over to Hogwarts so that he could hang out with his wife, Lily, his best friend, Remus Lupin, and his kids, Harry and Liana.

"Hey, Lily," greeted James, entering their private quarters. "Are you ready to go to the feast?"

Lily looked up from the papers she was flipping through. "Have the students arrived yet?"

James shook his head. "Nah, but they'll be here in a few moments."

"Okay," said Lily, setting the papers on her desk and standing up. The papers weren't really important, anyway, they were just her class rosters. Apparently she had a change on Thursday's fourth-years, so she was checking it. "Let's go then."

Lily was wearing her robes, which all staff was instructed to wear. She had red hair, green eyes, and a dazzling smile, which were natural things about her that made her beautiful. Though she looked dazzling in make-up, she didn't need it to look gorgeous. She was gorgeous in and out. James was wearing a casual brown sweater and jeans, with his Auror robes and badge over it. He thought he looked amazing. It wasn't ego (okay, maybe it was), but it wasn't a horrible thing. In James's eyes, at least.

They made their way to the Great Hall, spying Remus taking his seat at the staff table.

"I'm going to go say hi," said Lily. "You don't get to sit up there."

"I know," replied James with a laugh. "But since when have I ever followed the rules?"

Lily laughed and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before she walked over to the staff table and sat down next to Remus. "Hey."

"Hi," replied Remus with a smile.

"Ready for your first class tomorrow?"

"Yeah. I hope I'll do good. I don't know if I'll be… appreciated. It's a big deal I'm here with my condition. Take Severus, for example." He threw a subtle look at the man with black hair, sitting at the other end of the table with a frown.

"Don't worry," assured Lily. "You're amazing. You're a good teacher. And please, nobody cares about your condition. As for Severus-", she paused, not knowing what to say. Severus Snape was complicated. He hadn't talked to her at all for the three years she had been here. Any time she tried to talk to him, he walked away and ignored her. It was weird, and rather annoying, "-you don't need to worry. He makes that potion for you, doesn't he? No matter how he hates you, he can't tell the students. Not under Dumbledore's watch, anyway."

Remus smiled at her as Hagrid came and took a seat, accidentally breaking it. "Oh, right, he's teaching this year, isn't he?" Lily asked. "What position?"

"Care of Magical Creatures," Remus answered swiftly, as the students filed into the Great Hall, abuzz with chit-chat.

"Oh, right." Lily nodded. "He's a good guy. Hopefully he'll do amazing."

"He will," replied Remus softly. "Can't say the same for me."

Lily sighed. Remus was always so self-deprecating. He needed someone to come in his life and completely flip him around, show him how truly amazing he was. And that person would come, some day.

She just didn't know when.

James, who was standing by the door, walked up to Liana. He wasn't allowed to personally engage with any of the students, so he shouldn't be talking to her, but. He was breaking the rules. What's new? "Hey, Liana," he whispered.

Liana looked up at her dad. "What do you want?" she asked flatly. "You're not supposed to be here."

James was used to this behavior from her, so it didn't even sting much anymore. "Good luck at your Sorting."

"Oh. Right. Thanks," she said. She was a mini-model of Lily. Their hair was identical, her green eyes matched Lily's, and the natural body build was like Lily's. "You think I'll get Gryffindor?"

"I hope you do," said James.

She wrinkled her nose. "Why?"

James was taken aback. "You don't want to be in Gryffindor?"

"No." Liana rolled her eyes. "I'll be in a house with Harry." She said her brother's name like it was poison.

"Okay, and?" James didn't really get the way her brain worked at times.

"No," answered Liana. "He'll be watching over everything I do. And Gryffindor is for stupid people. Brave, but stupid."

"Hey, I was in Gryffindor," replied James in a low voice. "And so was your mother."

Liana shrugged. "Like I said, brave, but stupid."

James's eyes narrowed and he opened his mouth to retort when McGonagall called the first-years up. He turned to the Gryffindor table, planning to talk to Harry. But then he frowned. Harry wasn't there.

After a few minutes, Harry came into the room with his friend, Hermione Granger, James recognized, and they quickly went to sit with Ron Weasley, another one of their friends. James had met them both.

"Hi, Harry," James whispered, bending down next to him, ignoring the weird looks he was getting from the other Gryffindors. "How's it going? Why were you late?"

"There were dementors on the train," Harry muttered.

James's eyes widened. "Dementors?" Why on Earth were they on the Hogwarts Express?

"Yeah. They came into our compartment, too."

"What did they do?"

"I heard… I heard screaming. Like, real screaming. Then a green light."

James knew exactly what he was referring to, but he didn't say anything about it. Like Dumbledore had told him, wait until he's older.

"And then I passed out."

"Are you okay?"

Harry scowled. "Yeah."

"What's with the face?" James interrogated.

Ron, his friend who was happily munching on pie, pointed at the Slytherin table, where a blonde-haired boy (Draco Malfoy, James realized) was pretending to faint before he let out a loud snort.

"Oh, Merlin," mumbled James. "Don't worry about it, Harry. I'll take care of this. It's my job." He started to leave, then paused. "How did the dementors go away?"

"Lupin," said Harry simply. James nodded. Naturally. The man was a whiz at Defense.

Back at the staff table, Lily was staring, horror-struck, at Remus, disbelieving. "There… There was a Dementor on the train?"

"Yeah," replied Remus simply.

"Oh my goodness." That was scary. She hoped the students were all right. Especially the first-years. Especially Harry. Oh, and Liana. Then McGonagall's voice boomed out, interrupting her from her thoughts.

"Potter, Liana!"

Lily looked up to see Liana confidently prancing towards the seat and sitting down as McGonagall placed the hat on her head.

"SLYTHERIN!" the hat roared after around thirty seconds.

Lily's eyes widened.

What?

Slytherin?

Their daughter, a Slytherin?

Gryffindor's rivals?

She looked over at James. Something crossed over his expression, but then it was gone and he smiled at Liana encouragingly. Naturally, she didn't smile back.

"Are you okay?" Remus asked her.

"Yeah, of course." Lily responded as the clapping died down and McGonagall called the next name. "Just shocked. I felt like she'd be Gryffindor."

"There's nothing wrong with Slytherin, though," Remus said casually.

"Yeah, obviously. I don't have a problem with it, but one can only imagine how James will react."

"He'll be fine. Trust me. Maybe be a bit annoyed at first, but then it'll all calm down. James is a softie at heart, you know."

Lily nodded and they watched until the Sorting ended, followed by a round of applause, and Hagrid turned to them.

"Why, hello there!" Hagrid said jovially.

"Hi," said Lily.

"Congratulations ter your daughter!" Hagrid cried loudly, accidentally breaking a fork. McGonagall shot him a dirty look. For which one, Lily didn't know. Hagrid was an old family friend of the Potters'. He'd come over to their house countless times, he knew their children too. "Slytherin, eh? Nothing wrong with that," he added, "it's a nice House, nice. Ol' Slughorn was in there too. He's good, eh?"

"I know," said Lily. "I'm proud of Liana. Just that she and Harry won't be in the same House."

"Oh, it'll be fine," Hagrid said wisely. "She'll fit right in, popular girl she is."

Lily nodded. That wasn't really the problem, though. Liana needed someone to watch her, tame her. Merlin only knew what nuisance she'd be in Slytherin, all alone.

And with the company of Draco Malfoy.

Liana Potter was sitting in her dormitory with all the other Slytherin first-year girls. There were five, including her.

"Hi, I'm Kylie Johnson," the girl closest to her introduced herself. She had caramel brown hair and a clean white t-shirt.

"Liana," Liana said. She didn't want to be known as a Potter. They sucked, and she didn't want a sucky family legacy hanging over her.

"You're the Potter, right?" a girl in the corner with wavy black hair said.

Ugh. Stupid last name. "Yeah."

"You're in Slytherin?" Kylie asked skeptically. "After all your brother did?"

"Hey, I'm not my brother," Liana snapped. "He does his stuff, and I do mine. It just works that way. I'm not interested in defeating Voldemort or whatever."

Collective gasp.

"What did I do?" she sighed. "Said the V- word?"

Kylie nodded, her hair bouncing. "You shouldn't use it."

Liana shrugged. "I don't really care. Anyway, my brother and I are different. Voldemort keeps trying to kill him, but I don't give a Galleon. Sure, Voldemort's bad. I admit that. But I'm not going to spend my life running after him. That's a waste. There are much better types of trouble to get into, then Voldemort. Let him do what he wants. It doesn't affect us."

They all stared at her.

"Candice," greeted the girl with the wavy black hair, holding out her hand. "You seem pretty cool." What a way to be straightforward.

Liana nodded. "I know."

"Valentina," put in the other girl in the corner with a French accent. She looked pretty, but she looked rather annoyed. Stupid people. What gave her the right to be annoyed?

"And I'm Allesia, but if anyone calls me that, I will seriously kill you," the other girl grumbled. She had short, black hair, which made her look pretty, though in a tough way. Liana noticed a faint red scar tracing her forehead. "And I don't sleep."

Liana didn't know what to say to that comment. Luckily, Kylie asked a question for her.

"So what do you want us to call you, then?"

"Sia."

"Okay," agreed Candice. "That's easy."

"I'm going to bed," said Valentina. "Good night." And her curtains were shut.

"So," said Kylie. "You guys Purebloods? Half-bloods? What's the deal?"

"Half-blood," answered Liana.

"Yeah, we know that," said Candice, making a face.

"You're a Potter," said Sia snappily. "It's common knowledge."

Liana rolled her eyes. "I already thought we disassociated myself from the Potters?"

Sia glowered at her. "You're still one."

"What family are you from, then?" Liana shot back. This Allesia girl was getting on her nerves. She was rather mean.

"It doesn't matter," snapped Sia, though something in her voice was different. "My family's not as well-known as yours, anyway."

Liana cursed her family in her head. Why were they preventing her from making friends? For Merlin's sake! Why did Harry get to go save the Sorcerer's Stone, vanquish Voldemort, and nobody questioned him, but when Liana went and said hi, everyone immediately pointed fingers at her for being a Potter? She hated Potters. She hated her family. She hated everyone.

"I'm a pure-blood," Kylie said in an attempt to ease the tension.

"Half," Candice said. "Like… a Muggle-born and pure-blood. Not a Muggle."

"You guys are so childish," muttered Sia.

"Then go to bed!" Liana snapped. "Nobody asked you to stay with us."

"Fine, I will," retorted Sia. "But remember that I don't sleep."

"I don't care," Liana returned. Sia grumbled something incoherent and drew her blinds. Once she was gone, Liana turned to Candice and Kylie. "I think I'm calling it a night, too."

"I'll see you in class tomorrow, then?" Candice asked softly.

"Yeah," said Liana, her anger fading. "Or breakfast, even."

"I can meet you all for breakfast," said Kylie loudly, yawning. "Seven?"

"Sure."

And as Liana drew the curtains and laid back on her bed, cursing the world.

"GRR."

Why was it so cold in September?

The freezing sleet outside and the Dementor hadn't helped at all. Remus rubbed wearily at his forehead, bundled in an assortment of blankets and sweaters in his very warm bed, the flames dancing merrily in the fireplace.

Sometimes he felt guilty, momentarily, that the students didn't know of his condition. That he was teaching them, anyway, despite the fact that he was a werewolf, despite the fact that he turned into a vicious beast every month.

But there was the Wolfsbane Potion, and he trusted Severus Snape. Despite everything that had ever happened between them, the rocky, rocky relationship that existed between them, Remus trusted Severus, though he didn't know if Severus trusted him.

Knock knock.

Remus sighed. There was a lot of paperwork to be done, and he had to organize his lessons for the year. He was so busy these days. "Come in," he called.

The door opened, and a first-year student came in.

"Hi…" he said nervously. He was wearing dinosaur pajamas and a chicken hat.

"Hello," responded Remus kindly, putting a stack of papers in his desk. "Shouldn't you be in your dorm?" It was past curfew, after all.

"I got lost," he admitted sheepishly. "I heard Snape gives you like… a ton of detentions and puts you in a cupboard with a dragon if you're not there before curfew. So can you tell me how to get to the Slytherin common room from here?"

Remus blinked. "Yes," he said, bewildered, "but who told you that Severus - I mean Snape - puts you in a cupboard with a dragon?"

"A fifth-year."

"Okay, well, that's not true," said Remus, making a note to lecture all his fifth-year classes about this. Well, it might have been true. Nobody knew when it came to Snape. "And you just turn right, go up a set of stairs, and it'll be right there."

"Thanks," the boy mumbled, running a hand through his hat.

It clucked.

"I'll tell Severus that you have an excuse… What's your name?"

"Dominic."

"Got it. All right, then, I'll see you around."

"Yeah," he muttered, his hat falling asleep. "Thanks." He turned and ambled out of the room. Remus waited until the door was shut to pull out his paperwork. He did a little more before he just didn't feel like doing it anymore. He needed to take a walk and clear his head.

He was strolling around the grounds when he ran into Snape. What a coincidence.

"Severus," he said pleasantly. "What a surprise."

Snape's face morphed into a sneer. "Not so much, as we are both teachers, and therefore bound to meet each other while teaching."

Remus mentally sighed. Snape could be really annoying sometimes. No, all the time. "What brings you out here?" He did not miss Snape quickly drawing his robes, hiding something that he was holding with his left hand.

"I have a meeting with the headmaster." His voice was cold.

"Oh," Remus said. "Have fun."

"I wish you the same wherever you're going," Snape said. His voice couldn't be more obvious that he didn't care whether Remus had fun or not.

Remus smiled. "Thanks."

Snape simply nodded before walking away, his dark cloak billowing behind him.

"Wait!" called Remus. Snape turned. "There's a Slytherin student named Dominic… and he got lost on the way back to his dorm, so don't put him in detention or anything for being out past curfew."

Snape gave a stiff nod before he disappeared. He could be so unreadable sometimes. But Dumbledore trusted him, and that was enough proof for Remus. He trusted Dumbledore, no matter what others said about Snape.

"Hey, Remus," came a voice out of nowhere.

"Hi, James," said Remus, recognizing his friend's voice immediately. "Take off your cloak."

James materialized, yanking his Invisibility Cloak off in one swift motion."Guess what?"

"No, wait," Remus cut in. "How did you get here? You're not supposed to be here."

"Maybe, maybe not." James waggled his eyebrows suggestively, the way Sirius used to do.

Sirius.

He tried so hard, so hard, not to think of it… but it just wasn't enough. He'd had thirteen years to get over it… but that wasn't enough either. It just wasn't. Thirteen years was nothing compared to the years of deep friendship between them. The moments. The pranks, the jokes, the teasing, the transformations.

The Marauders, the four best friends, the brothers.

"-and so basically, I told Snape that he'd better stuff his face up a popsicle because… are you listening to me?"

Remus blinked. "What? Yeah."

James raised an eyebrow. "What did I say?"

"You said… You said Snape had better stuff his face up a popsicle."

"Yeah. Before that?"

Remus glared at him. "First of all, you don't need him to say anything for you to take a jibe at him. And second, you know I wasn't listening. Stop rubbing it in my face."

James smirked. "Listening now? Good. I can't wait, the Quidditch league is about to start. It's gonna be epic. Gryffindor's going to win."

Remus laughed. James's enthusiasm was contagious, though Remus wasn't exactly a fan of Quidditch himself. Not like James, in any case. "Great. But what does that have to do with Severus?"

"Snivellus. He's the Slytherin Head, remember? He said that they were going to win. That's when I told him to stuff his face up a popsicle."

Remus rolled his eyes. "You're crazy, you know that?"

"That's why you're my friend," said James smugly.

Remus laughed. "Yes. Yes, it is."

"So, Harry," began Ron nervously, "how do you feel about your sister ending in Slytherin?"

Harry felt another course of anger sweep through him. Subconsciously, he felt his hands curl into balled fists. "I hate it!" he shouted, so loudly that Hermione knocked over a bottle of ink in alarm, and the few other people in the common room turned their heads to face him curiously. But he wasn't done. "I hate that she's in Slytherin! She's going to be corrupted, especially by Malfoy, I know it!"

"Calm down, Harry," said Ron and Hermione simultaneously.

"How do you expect me to calm down?" he snarled. "There's a Potter in Slytherin. She's going to follow in the tracks of all those despicable beasts, of all the werewolves and vampires and monsters that supported Voldemort!"

Ron and Hermione flinched.

"She's going to associate herself with the likes of people like Sirius Black!" Harry growled. "How d'you think I feel about that?"

Neither Ron nor Hermione answered him. He let out a tired sigh.

"I'm going to bed," he muttered sulkily, and he skulked over to his four-poster and collapsed.

A/N: There you have it! Chapter one. Hope you enjoyed it. There's a lot more humor to come. We solemnly swear. ;)

Those of you that are here for the Remadora, don't worry! It's coming, and it's coming soon! There are going to be plenty of moments of all of our ships throughout the story.

We know some of you are fans of OC's, and we know some of you aren't. First of all, THIS IS NOT AN OC STORY. This is centered on James and Lily, Remus and Tonks. Lily was pregnant when she died, and so she would've had another child no matter what, so voila! Liana was born, but this is not a Liana centric fic at all.

If you have any recommendations or suggestions for characters or perspectives to add, leave a review and let us know! Hope you enjoy it!
