Hermione Granger was never called a fool and didn't pretend to be ever. This one time, faced with her love and his son, she wished she could just play ignorant. She didn't want to have to break the magic of what she once thought was a romantic potion, the idea of finding her soulmate still felt like something Lavender would say. Her thoughts turned to worry as she wondered how the plausible her story sounded to ears of someone who never knew about the magic world. The Statue of Secrecy would be broken, which would put her at risk of penalties when she got back. Unless she could work around the words that stated "magic and the wizarding world" to have them figure it out themselves. She laughed silently as she thought of the absurdity of it all. She was Hermione Granger, and her she was about to break another rule, only this time it would be worse than being expelled.
Carlisle noticed she was smiling and felt joy in his dead heart that he hadn't truly felt since she left yet again. He didn't understand why she would disappear and reappear but was almost gleeful as selfish as it was. The only worry he had was if and when she would ask the obvious, their nature to remain "living" for so long. Or rather he supposed just him, as she didn't know Edward yet but he had hoped they would have gotten along well. With that thought, he turned to his son and knew that his mind had been read as Edwards' head was tilted slightly to the side.
The buzz of the pleasant polite conversation went around the breakfast table as the odd-looking "family" ate together. Hermione noticed that the men pushed around food to make it look as it was thought they were consuming the food. She narrowed her eyes a bit, almost wanting to tell them to give up the façade as it did nothing but create awkwardness. But instead, she let it be because the breakfast table is not a place to argue as she was taught by Molly.
"Breakfast cleared and cleaned; Hermione wondered who would crack first. The politeness seemed overbearing and the air felt dense as social niceties were being worn out quickly. With one more glance at the clock in the living room, she decided to start.
"As lovely as it is seeing you again…. how is it that you are still looking so….well?" Hermione bit her tongue to say the word well, instead of alive. Carlisle looked a bit embarrassed by the question but expected it so he responded. "Hermione, when we first met it was the 1600s and now it is the 1900s, this same question could be applied to you." Edward's eyebrows raised at the new information of his father's mystery woman. Hermione had a rose blush fall onto her cheeks as she nodded.
"If you answer my question, I promise to you that I will answer all of yours that you may have," Hermione said confidently, almost as if sounding as she was bluffing. Edward opened his mouth to say that it was a deal without even glancing at his father for approval. His father's thoughts had given away what he was going to say anything./p
Nodding, Carlisle began his tale of what his past was without being vague as they both had been in the past. The confirmed theory of being a vampire had Hermione smiling as she now felt very confident in a method of explaining her own secret. She listened as he explained and opened up to her in a way he never had before. She felt even closer to him that she had the first couple of times she spent time with her. When Carlisle finished his tale, Edward spoke about his life and his death with his newfound father. There were smiles from all three of them as they truly bonded and listened to the two stories being told.
Hermione posed a question to both of them when it was her time to talk. "What are you, really what are you considered," Carlisle furrowed his brow because he thought he was pretty clear that they were both vampires. She saw that confusion and gave a small giggle at his confusion. Edward decided to give it a guess. "Sins? Devils, that are here on Earth? Monsters?"
Hermione shook her head and the rage came with it. "Edward Cullen! Don't you dare call yourself a monster! You sound just like a friend of mine and I never put up with his self-deprecation either. You are an amazing person. Regardless if you are alive or if you crave blood." Her thoughts took her back to Remus, her professor, her friend, and her bookworm partner. Her anger surprised both men and they took her words into consideration.
She sighed and then asked the question once again. "What are you?" Carlisle took a crack at it and guessed "creatures of the night, magical creatures, vegetarians?" Hermione laughed at the last one but said: "The second one, is what I was trying to get at, can you tell me more magical creatures?" Edward had regained his voice from her earlier shouting and spoke up."Magical Creatures could be werewolves, fairies, witches, unicorns?" She smiled and then asked what the third creature was. Edward repeated "witches" which made Hermione nod again, waving a hand as if encouraging him to make the leap. He looked at her as if she was mad, a raving lunatic that his father, unfortunately, fell for. But said it anyway as if saying it would make it more believable. "Are you a witch?"
Hermione smiled brightly and began to talk as if a spell had been lifted, and it practically had as she was now free to talk without the Statue of Secrecy in her way. She explained what she was and her potion that made her time travel to her soulmate. Not going particularly into the dark wars that fell on her teen years. The twenty-three-year-old pulled out her wand as she could see in their eyes pure disbelief but also a hint of wonder.
Hermione laughed as she transformed the chairs holding the men to start dancing, and the teapot to start giggling. Their eyes widened as they experienced what she had said, and she saw them believe. Canceling the charms, and everything back to normal, Hermione smiled at them. Carlisle was the first to recover from the magical moments and asked if all of the stories were true. Hermione knew he meant the soulmate aspect, and she reassured him. Carlisle Cullen was her soulmate and she was literally meant for him as their souls wanted to be together. Together they would face whatever is in their way together. Provided Hermione didn't disappear on them, but she had a strong feeling that she would be there for the important moments.
