Warning a brief description of Esme trying to commit suicide. Sorry about the long wait. :)

Carlisle was coming home from the music shop to the house when he was called into the hospital because a woman had jumped off a bridge. He rushed over as it was a life or death situation, but the people who brought the woman had already pronounced her dead. She looked pretty dead from a human's eye anyway. She still had a heartbeat faint enough for Carlisle to hear, even when the stethoscope could not. He agreed with the initial diagnosis in hopes that he could steal the body before they decided to bury her. The stretcher rolled to the morgue and Carlisle waited until a later time when she could be grabbed unsuspiciously. He crept down to the morgue hall and grabbed her with his vampire speed as he dashed from the hospital, almost as if the room hadn't been disturbed at all.

Edward and Rosalie had heard their father before the door even opened, however, this wasn't the usual footsteps coming in, it was fast running not normal human-run but much faster. They glanced over at the window, relieved that the darkness would allow Carlisle to be able to be undetected even more. Edward flung open the door as he heard the running catching up quickly. He was shocked to see in Carlisle's arms was an unconscious woman. Quickly Carlisle ran upstairs, telling Edward to close the door and lock it. Rosalie had ensured the house looked like there wasn't anyone in it, in case someone had seen something. Carlisle confessed as he was quickly putting her on the bed that he had stolen her body from the morgue because there was still a slight heartbeat. Edward could hear it but it seemed to dim even as the seconds went by, before he smelled the blood of the human as her neck was bitten into. Then like that it was done, she would become the undead.

Carlisle came out of the room looking like he had just performed surgery, tired and almost as if he had lost the patient as his eyes were conflicted. Edward read his thoughts about the doubt of changing another human but realizing she would have been dead. Putting a hand to his father's shoulder was a silent way of supporting his decision. Rosalie had also made sure to support her now father figure in what happened. Waiting for the few days where the screams of the poor women were loud, and finally, her awakening was agony for the family. When she came about, Carlisle went into the room to explain everything and how she would be okay.

"Hi, my name is Carlisle Cullen, there are a few things I need to tell you about what happened to you."

"It's you...I remember you."

"I can't seem to recall why, as I promise you were out of sorts when you fell into the bridge."

"I didn't fall, I jumped, I wanted to end it all."

"Oh, I am terribly sorry, I am afraid you can't do that. See I tried saving your life and I ended up making you a vampire."

"A what?"

"A vampire, the ones like the stories people tell. Although I don't drink human blood."

"Sorry. You mean to tell me you turned me into a vampire that is killed by sunlight and garlic!"

"Yes. It was because you were dying, and I am a doctor."

"I remember, well yes it would make sense for you to try and save me."

"Please explain how you remember me, I don't know if I remember you."

"I'm Esme Evenson. Or I guess my maiden name is Esme Anne Platt. You healed me when the doctor was away when I was 16. I had climbed a tree and broke my leg. That was back in 1911...so I guess that would make sense because it looks like you haven't aged a day."

"Well, it is a pleasure to remeet you, Mrs. Evenson."

"Please don't call me that, my husband was a terrible man, I suffered so much because of him. Just call me Esme"

"My apologies Esme, I am Carlise, please call me as such if I am to call you by your first name."

"Who else is here? I hear someone or a group of people, suddenly my eyesight is much better too…" Esme said once she actually took in her surroundings.

"Oh, that would be my son Edward, and my daughter Rosalie, they are also vampires. We are a family."

"That is so sweet, I had a baby boy, he died of lung fever, that is what made me choose death."

"I am sorry for your loss."

"It truly was cruel, the one thing in life I wanted was a baby and when I got my wish, I didn't have a place to raise it as it wasn't going to live with my husband. I was glad he was drafted away…"

"Well, you are more than welcome to stay here in the meantime because it will take time to adjust and learn things that are supposed to only be part of the storybooks."

"Thank you, I think I can't drink human blood right now, it seems so barbaric. You said you don't drink it, what do you drink"

"Animal blood is my preferred choice, my family drinks it as it sustains our needs without senseless murder."

"I think I'd like to try that."

"Sure, let's try out your first hunt. Do you mind if Edward and Rosalie come with?"

"Oh yes, let me meet them."

Edward and Rosalie were at the door essentially but had the grace to knock. The introductions were made, and while it was done they went on their first hunt together. Edward's thoughts were filled with emotions from Esme and how she remembers him from childhood. She had fallen in love with him ages ago but was forced to marry Charles Evenson instead. Edward would have to have a word with his dad about Esme's internal thoughts, even if it was in violation of her privacy.

While Esme was feeding for the first time, Edward used that as a distraction to tell his father and Rosalie about Esme's thoughts about him.

"Dad, this woman you brought home, she is in love with you. Her thoughts are all jumbled about how she loves you and has always loved you from the moment you "saved" her from the tree at 16."

"Edward! Those are her internal thoughts, please, she might be thinking it but that isn't proper to talk about them without her consent."

"I know. But you might want to know them considering they are about you, and what would Hermione say about her living with us."

Carlisle thought about that and then thanked Edward for informing him. He realized what moral battle Edward would have made to open up about the sensitive topic. Rosalie looked almost like she had smelled something unpleasant as she scrunched up her perfect face with distaste. Edward accepted the awkward apology and then turned their attention back to Esme who was still feasting. They went back to the house full and all in thought about each other. Esme fit awkwardly with the Cullens as she wasn't exactly sure how to fit their dynamic.

"I was wondering how the family is truly a family without a mother," Esme asked almost digging for information while Carlise was at the hospital.

Rosaline was quick to inform her that they did have a mother. She made it quite clear that she did not trust this other woman. Edward was a bit more gracious about it and explained that Hermione was Carlisle's significant other.

"Well, where is she? Why haven't I met her?" Esme had questioned, nearly criticizing this woman who stole Carlisle's heart away.

"She pops in and out," Edward said with a snicker, even Rosalie had cracked a small smile at her brother's antics.

"So is she human?" Esme asked, with a brow raised. Her internal thoughts revealing that if this Hermione, was human she would die or become old which would leave her to pick up the pieces of Carlisle's heart.

Rosalie didn't have to read minds to get those thoughts when she said sharply, "Yes. But she is a special human."

Esme was taken aback by her reaction and said: " I'm sure she is." But Edward and Rosalie could tell she didn't mean it wholeheartedly. They desperately wished Hermione would pop in so that they could prove Esme wrong.
