"Kitty" Year-Round
Part XVI: Kisses Sweeter than Wine
By Mia LeighArc
The following day, Amelia woke with a wince of pain in her head. If the dreams...no nightmares of the previous night had been any indication of how well she slept, it had more than explained why Delbert had already gotten up for the day. She could hear sounds coming from downstairs, perhaps he was working on something for the Academy. Chuckling lightly to herself at the thought, she begrudgingly turned to the alarm clock next to the bed and groaned at what she found.
"9:30 already! Blast it!" She mulled to herself. Just as she was about to force herself out of bed with all the latent energy of a beached whale, Delbert come through the bedroom door with breakfast.
"Good morning, Darling . Did you sleep any better after that nightmare last night?" Delbert said lovingly, setting down the tray next to her. He gazed for what seemed like hours into her emerald eyes. She hadn't said a word, but he already knew the answer to his question.
" I take that as a no?" He said cautiously. She nodded slightly, lightly massaging her temples. He gently slipped his arms around her, holding her close to him. He caressed the top of her head, running his fingers through her hair. Then he pulled back to gaze at her again, this time, taking her cheek in his right hand.
"I love you, Amelia." He said honestly, drawing his hands now to her shoulders. He sat down next to her and grabbed the tray, so they could enjoy a home-cooked breakfast.
"And I love you too. What did I ever do to deserve you, Delbert Doppler?" She asked. Delbert blushed at this and wrapped an arm around her.
"Well if you must know, challenging me at every turn until I was given the chance to show you my usefulness. Then by allowing me to continue to be of use to you." Amelia rewarded him the grace to blush.
"Well, if you put it that way Darling..." Her voice trailed off as she put her folk down and rested her hand on his thigh. His ear perked up and he raised an eyebrow to match his wife's sly smile as she moved the empty breakfast plates on a side table.
"Amelia?" He managed to barely bark out before she pounced on him, passionately kissing him. He was taken back at first, then returned the affection. He didn't know exactly what he said to illicit such a passionate reaction out of his stoic independent wife, but he liked it.
About three weeks later she had recovered from her nightmares. However, she did find herself feeling a little nauseated first thing in the morning though. She would always try to be discrete about it, so as not to wake Delbert. However, true to form he would always ask her if she was feeling well when she crawled back into bed. Usually she would say something like "Cup o' tea and I'll be right as rain." That morning however, he was waiting for her when she stepped back into the bedroom.
"Amelia, are you sure you're feeling okay, darling?" motioning her to lay down next to him. She said nothing.
"Because I couldn't help but notice that the last three weeks you've gotten sick every single morning. I really think you should go to the doctor." He offered placing his hand on her back and gently making soothing circles.
"I don't need a doctor, but perhaps some way to cure this blasted nausea!" Delbert grimaced at her hesitation.
"Well, if not for your sake, then for mine. I'm worried about you. Please, Amelia." At this, she conceded. How could she say no? Besides, she was a tad concerned about herself too. She was battling with the thought for a moment while Delbert continued to sooth her. She knew she wasn't going to win this one.
"Oh, all right! If you must insist, dear. I'll go today." Delbert smiled, satisfied with himself. She sighed in frustration as Delbert stepped out to make some breakfast. In the meantime, Amelia got dressed for the day.
Later that day, Amelia was visiting the family doctor. She had asked Sarah to come with her for moral support. While they waited, Sarah looking knowingly at Amelia from the corner of her eye.
"You know Amelia, you don't have to be embarrassed by this? I remember what this was like..." Sarah said obviously trailing off. She didn't want to come right out and say it for fear of Amelia's anger. If there was one thing Sarah knew, it was that you didn't want to bring awkward situations to light if it involved Amelia...that was unless you could run fast and run far. Amelia raised a single eyebrow and shifted her head quickly towards her friend.
"And what exactly is that supposed to mean?!" Amelia exclaimed in a low and threatening voice. Before Sarah could respond, the nurse called back Amelia.
"Amelia Doppler" the nurse called, Amelia cringed at the fact that her title had been omitted. She made a note the correct her later when her nausea wasn't rearing it's ugly head again. She turned to Sarah, who helped her into the room. Amelia immediately shot her a warning look and muttered.
"Not a bloody word..." Sarah just nodded and laughed slightly. The women sat down in the examination room in silence waiting for the doctor after the nurse checked Amelia's basic vitals.
"Okay Mrs. Doppler. It looks like everything is looking good so far, the doctor will be in to see you in a few moments." Amelia smiled slightly, having the pleasantries aside, this time having the grace to forgive her for continuing to omit her title of captain while addressing her. Amelia gave a nod and let out a frustrated sigh. Next to the door was magazines for the patients to read while they waited. Amelia grabbed one with a leggy- two headed girl on the front in some sort of seductive pose with her tentacle like hair cascading off her shoulders. She rolled her eyes at the captions on the cover "Ten easy ways to please him in bed" and "Sexy secrets to keep your beach body" where two of the most ridiculous of them all.
That and the fact that the doctor seemed to be taking forever were really starting to cause Amelia to get quite irritated. Upon curiously looking at the article about "pleasing him in bed" Amelia couldn't help but laugh out loud. She turned to Sarah who also started laughing at her friend's sudden change of mood and took a lot at the article herself. The women both collapsed into a fit of giggles. Suddenly the door opened to reveal a tall, reptilian man with broad shoulders. Amelia's mood radically changed from joyful laughter to blissful confusion.
"Th-th-this has got to be some sort of mistake..." She managed to choke out.
"What happened to Dr Shaffer?" She asked nervously as Dr William Zorkey looked over her chart.
"I'm afraid Dr Shaffer couldn't be here today, I'm sorry for the office not informing you Mrs. Doppler." Amelia fumed at this.
"That is Captain Doppler thank you very much! If you don't mind, I would feel more comfortable with a female doctor..." The nurse had been informed of the mistake and was about to tell the Captain when she walked back into the room to find the confused and cross Captain Amelia Doppler and friend in tow.
"Dr Zorkey, a patient in room 3-c urgently needs to speak to you, I'll have Dr. Leehigh cover you." The nurse informed him, noticing all too well the expression on Amelia's face. Upon Dr Zorkey stepping out, the nurse stayed in the room this time until Dr Susan Leehigh came in.
"I'm terribly sorry for the mix-up Captain, I'm Susan Leehigh. What seems to be the problem?" The woman said sweetly. Amelia went on to explain the situation and what had been happening the past few weeks.
"hmm, okay. Well let me run a few tests and we'll see what's going on." After running the tests, Dr Leehigh told her that she would contact Amelia with the results in a few days.
"Why don't you come back in two weeks? Captain Doppler." Dr Leehigh asked her.
The women headed back to town from the doctor's office. As they arrived back at the Benbow, Amelia said her goodbyes to her friend and headed home to her husband. Amelia contemplated what the possibilities could be. Could she have a simple cold? Was something wrong with her stomach? Why did she find herself so tired lately? Was that a headache she felt coming on? Why did the doctor want to see her again in two weeks? Oh what to do?
"What was Delbert going to think?" She thought as she realized how much anxiety had arisen at the mere thought. What was he going to think? He had been so worried about her that morning, it would be a hard few days of not knowing what to say or think for that matter. Amelia put those thoughts out of her mind as she opened the door to the mansion, finding Delbert sitting on the couch with good book, a blanket and a cup of tea. There was a fire going and she was truly happy to be hope with her loving husband.
"I'm back, dear. How was your day?" She said sweetly as he got up to greet her with a speed she wasn't expecting. He must've been waiting up for her. She smiled at the thought of how sweet he treated her. Then a thought came to her that she was not expecting...
"He would make a great father too." Amelia blushed at the thought. They hadn't really discussed it since they got married, but the thought was becoming more and more inviting to her over the past few weeks. She mentally scolded herself for such a ridiculous thought.
"Are you okay, dear? What did the doctor say?" Delbert asked while wrapping his arms around her. Amelia lost in his touch, lost her train of thought for a moment.
"Amelia?" Delbert said again. Amelia finally came to.
"She said that she would get back to me about my test results in a few days." Amelia said plainly. she kept the part about going back in two weeks to herself so he didn't continue to worry about her. Delbert smiled weakly, but dropped the subject for the time being.
"Are you hungry? I was just about to start dinner." Delbert asked as he broke the embrace with his wife to gaze into her beautiful eyes. Amelia nodded.
Delbert made dinner and after they sat in front of the fire, cuddling under the blanket. Time seemed to flow by like the many galaxies and planets of the etherium. When they went to bed that night, she had peaceful, pleasant dreams.
A few days later, Delbert was out at the Academy most of the day and Amelia had some errands to run herself. She got some rather shocking news from the doctor's office and she didn't exactly know how to bring it up to her husband. Once he got home, he asked of course if she'd heard anything. Of course, she said "not yet" and left it at that, but she had to figure out a way to tell him and fast!
That night, they took a nice walk around the park after a sumptuous dinner at their favorite restaurant. They sat down in grass at the park, admiring the way the stars looked. They both let out a contented sigh, enjoying the view and the company. She moved from her back to her side and laid her head on his chest. His arms immediately wrapped around her in a very protective way.
When they got back home, they went upstairs. Delbert found a window opened in the bedroom that wasn't open before they left. He thought nothing of it and closed it before putting on his pajamas. As they were climbing into bed, the cuddle cuddled each other close. Amelia bit her lower lip, nervously.
"Delbert I have to tell you something." She said with a slight quiver in her voice, which was usually sharp as a knife. Delbert furrowed his eyebrows in concern.
"What is it? Did you hear back from the doctor finally?" Delbert asked kindly. Amelia simply nodded before she began speaking again.
"It seems that I'm pregnant." Amelia said to not only her husband, but also finally to herself. She was happy and terrified in the same breath. Delbert was dumbfounded to say the least. He took his wife into his arms and left her with a passionate kiss that made her lucky she was a woman...and she was lucky, she was going to be a mother.
