Chapter 6
Hermione awoke with a start and sat straight up in her bed, her hand flying to grasp her chest over her pounding heart. Looking around, it took her brain a moment to realize she was in her tent and perfectly safe.
Her night of sleeping had started off wonderfully empty of images. She was fairly certain that she had been able to sleep easily half the night in peaceful slumber. However, as usual, no night ever passed without some sort of nightmare intruding into her psyche. She couldn't remember all that much from the nightmare but knew it was about the War. She remembered zigzagging around and tossing spells as fast as she could. At one point she had tripped over a fallen comrade. The last thing she remembered was looking around and seeing all the carnage. Whoever said there was a victor in war had never been in a war. There were no victors only victims.
"Tempus" Hermione said and was surprised by the time. It was three in the afternoon! How in Merlin's name had she slept so long?! She couldn't remember the last time she had slept so late. Oh, that's right! I'm in a new world and time zone…well, that would do it she supposed. Laughing quietly to herself, Hermione called for her house elf.
"Daisy."
"Yes Mistress." Daisy answered.
"Why didn't you wake me sooner? I really didn't want to sleep so late." Hermione inquired.
Daisy bowed her head and replied in a distressed voice that she had tried to wake Hermione up at two different times but Hermione wouldn't waken.
Worried that Daisy would try to punish herself for her own lack of response, Hermione quickly reassured Daisy that it was alright.
"It's alright Daisy. I'm sure you did try and I suppose I was just more tired than I thought. I did stay up quite late and am not used to it. Thank you for trying and hopefully I'll adjust to the time here quickly." Hermione assured. Daisy visibly relaxed at hearing her words. She hadn't punished herself for some time but she had been thinking about doing so when she couldn't waken her Mistress.
"Would Mistress Hermione like something to eat? Daisy could whip something up for you." Daisy inquired.
"Some breakfast would nice Daisy, thank you." Hermione replied with a smile. "I believe I'll hop in the shower real quick before eating and clear my head a bit."
"Did you have night terrors again Mistress?" Daisy asked with concern. She didn't like how often Hermione had bad dreams and wished with all her might she could take them away for her.
With a gentle smile Hermione answered. "Of course, like always. Although I do believe I slept for a bit this time before the nightmares started. Maybe being here will help them to dissipate sooner?"
"Or maybe they don't seem so bad since Mistress has made new friends?" Daisy asked with a smile and twinkle in her eyes.
Hermione laughed at her lightheartedness. "You know Daisy, we both might be right. Well, whatever the reason, I am certainly happy to get any sort of reprieve. Could be the new world, new friends or even just being back in the tent? I'm not sure but I'm not going to look too hard. I'm too happy to have finally gotten some sort of sleep without taking a Dreamless Sleep potion."
Daisy smiled and nodded her head then went into the kitchen to prepare a breakfast for her Mistress. Hermione smiled as she watched Daisy. It was a comforting sight and she welcomed it with open arms.
After taking a longer than normal shower and dressing in jeans and a tee shirt, Hermione sat down to enjoy the wonderful breakfast Daisy cooked up for her; bacon, eggs, biscuits with sausage gravy and a piping hot cup of coffee. As Hermione ate she thought over the previous night.
In roughly twenty-four hours she had gone from being miserable and lonely to being happy and excited. She now had two ancient vampires as friends, a new world to call home and Daisy with her! She never would have thought her life would take such a dramatic turn. After the war she had done her part to help restore Hogwarts to its former glory as well as helping to rebuild Diagon and Knockturn Allies. She had also helped where she could for the war orphans, so many of them. It was sad really; just how many innocents would continue to suffer due to one madman's reign of terror. Fortunately, the wizarding world was trying to change. There were just as many purebloods helping as there were all the others. Also there was talk of the Ministry pushing a marriage law to help repopulate. Birthrates were low before the war and then you have a war that stretches for years and, yeah, the wizarding world needed help to save itself from dying out. Well at least she wouldn't have to worry about that!
The only person she would truly miss would be Professor Snape. He had allowed her to apprentice with him to earn her potions mastery and become a Potions Mistress. She was quite proud of her accomplishment. Even though Severus was a harsh taskmaster, he was fair. Studying under his tutelage had given her an edge most could only dream of having. Severus Snape would accept nothing but the best and therefore, she had strove every day to make him proud of her and to not regret agreeing to her apprenticeship. At her graduation, Severus had beamed with pride when he handed her the certificate and medal. Yeah, she would miss Professor Snape but knew his life was just beginning as was hers and if he was here now he would wish her luck and tell her not to fuck it up! Which made Hermione smile and chuckle.
Hermione sat back in her chair with a sigh as she took a long drink of her coffee, she considered her new life. She would need to learn of the area and what the governing laws were. She was fairly sure the mug-, er human, laws would be pretty much the same. However, she would need to learn about the supernatural laws, since she was sure she would be considered a supe here. Well, she did have two excellent sources for information, Hermione thought as she smiled into her mug.
Hermione had no doubt that Godric and Eric would help her learn all they could, which caused her to chuckle to herself again. She was certain their knowledge wouldn't be restricted to just the laws and that was fine by her. She knew she wasn't quite ready for anything more than friendship at the moment, but she would be one day. She wasn't sure about Eric but was mostly positive that Godric would be patient with her. She had noticed his reaction to her when he launched them into the air. Gods! They could fly! Both of them and quite well too. Godric had acted as if she had weighed no more than a feather. Oh and the feel of his arms around her…she couldn't remember the last time she had felt so safe and secure. It was such a wonderful feeling she knew she would have to tread carefully for she might start something with the ancient vampire that she wasn't quite ready for.
Hermione smiled softly as she thought of Eric's gentle kiss to her forehead. For someone who, she was sure, came across as being a cold and uncaring badass, he could be so sweet. Not that she would say such things to his face, at least, not yet. She chuckled and felt her insides warm at the thought of the two vampires. She was sure most people would think she was barmy or touched in the head thinking warm thoughts about two such ancient and powerful beings but Hermione couldn't help it. They had been so kind and sweet the night before. Besides, she never gave anyone else's opinions any weight. It was hers that mattered and no one else's. So she would continue to think and feel the way she wanted.
