[Apartment Building, Manhattan]
(Both Peter and his partner rush up the stairs and Peter kicks the door open and they see a deranged man holding gun to his terrified wife and child.)
Man: What the heck?! You called the police?! I can't believe you did that!
Peter: No!
(The man aims his pistol at his family as they hold each other tight in the corner. He pulls the trigger 6 times and Peter is shocked to bear witness at this horrifying scene.)
Man: What the heck?
(The man drops this pistol and Peter looks closer to see all six shots have stop in mid-air before reaching the woman and her son. The bullets drop and the man is flung across the room into a wall. Peter turns around and he's his partner Hesam giving him a grin. Seconds later, his face reforms and he takes the shape of Sylar.)
Sylar: Did you really think your partner could keep up with you? He's still downstairs grabbing supplies.
Peter: Thank you.
Sylar: You and I need to have a little talk afterward. (Walks away)
[Ruidoso, New Mexico]
(Both Knox and his cousin Lamar sit in front of a lit fireplace enjoying the relaxing sound of wood popping. Knox looks over to see the Hippie girl passed out with her hairy armpits openly displayed.)
Knox: This is a nice family you got.
Lamar: They're all I got left, man. They stuck with me through all of this; I'm thankful for that.
Knox: You ever thought about settling down peacefully- with a family and all that?
Lamar: … This is life for me now- keeping people with powers safe and giving them another chance. I give them new identities and safe escort out of the country where laws aren't so... forceful. (Takes a self reflecting deep breath) Right and wrong a'int as complicated as people make it; we're just too quick to judge. I know people judge me for being a smuggler and at the end of the day, for helping those who can't help themselves, I'm officially labeled a bad guy or a criminal. The judgment isn't what bothers me, that's all a mind thing, but what does bother me, is that you have people out there who can legally lock me up and take years out of my life for helping other people because THEY say it's wrong. I don't got a house, a job; none of that. All I got are my people and the skin on my back, and time. Time is something you can't ever get back and these groups of people think they can lock me up and cut time from my existence in this world because I did something that THEY didn't like?! (Shakes his head in disbelief) It disgusts me. (Closes his eyes and tries to reground) Sorry, Cuz, I don't mean to throw that all on you.
Knox: Nah, it's cool, I get it.
Lamar: I wonder if Petrelli felt the same way. His speech started a war with the government law that went against human rights. For standing up for himself, I can only imagine how much hate he has his way. How many politicians have you seen on T.V. trash his name and call him a "potential terrorist" for disrupting national peace? I know I can count about 8 right now.
Knox: I knew Peter; he was a good guy. Family was always important to him but he turned on them when he knew they were in the wrong. Even powerless, he stood up to his father who had all the power. Me and the crew I was working with at the time were too afraid to do anything. Matt Parkman always had my back and tried keeping us straight, but I didn't hesitate to try and punch a hole through his chest. Fear makes you do some crazy things.
Lamar: You should get some rest, cousin.
(The sun falls and outside in the darkness, Elle staring up at the clouds like a child lost in their dreams. He walks up behind her and stares at the wild horses leaving the property.)
Elle: I've never seen wild horses before, at least, not that I remember. It was definitely something.
Knox: (Smirks) You like horses, huh?
Elle: It's not so much I like horses, it's the experience I get from interacting with them.
Knox: Yeah, I guess so. I wouldn't be crazy enough to get my hand close to a mouth that big. (Slightly chuckles)
Elle: Are you going hiking with me tomorrow?
Knox: That's more of a white people thang, too may bears and big cats out there for my taste.
Elle: (Says with friendly tease) It'll be fun… (Pokes his shoulder)
Knox: I'll see about grabbing my cousin's gun and think about it.
Elle: All that thinking will make life pass you by.
Knox: At least I'll have a life to pass by. (Chuckles)
(Elle smiles at him and Knox can't help but feel distracted by not only her friendly smile, but her wavy wet hair as well.)
Elle: Goodnight. (Walks passed up) Bright an early chick-y. Bock, bock.
[Lab, unknown location]
(Automatic doors open up to a lab and as Rachael, Stevens, and Joshua enter the lab, they see a well dressed woman standing in front of a horizontal capsule surrounded by two doctors, her African-American assistant Harris, and an Englishman who looks at the head of the capsule deep in his own thoughts.)
Kravid: So you have him?
Rachael: We do. He was more than willing to come peacefully. Sadly the weather caused us a bit of a delay though
Kravid: Should I let you do business, sir? Sir…?
Englishman: (Snaps out of it) Yes, yes, I apologize. Uh- excellent; please come in.
(The three of them walk up to the group and Rachael is more than curious to know what's in the capsule.)
Dr. Schwenkman: Should I continue the process?
Englishman: I insist you do. We're making such good progress.
Dr. Schwenkman: Alright. (Continues to type on the computer)
Englishman: Great. Now, let's bring in the next test subject.
(A frightened young woman is escorted by security and takes to a large platform surrounded by three walls in front of everybody in the room. The security leaves the room immediately and the woman waddles herself back and forth, conflicted on if she should try to run or not. The woman wears all white scrubs and her head is plagued with a series of wires and pads.)
Dr. Schwenkman: Systems are clear for testing.
Englishman: Let's get started.
(Three metal panels come out of the walls surrounding the woman and a form of electromagnetic energy is released into her head. She screams and holds her head in pain and eventually she falls to the ground screaming.)
Dr. Schwenkman: 10 seconds left!
(Another 10 seconds goes on of her screaming until finally the panels stop emitting energy and seize back into the walls. She shakes and slowly stands to her face terrified as her res blood vessel-engorged eyes tear with blood. Joshua takes a moment to clear his mind and braces himself to stomach whatever comes next. Security pushes forward a table on wheels in front of the woman with a square glass box on top.)
Kravid: Let's hope this works. Now, put your hands on the glass and try to use your power.
(The woman is scarred and hesitates. She looks over at everyone in hopes that either Rachael or Joshua would have the heart to tell them to stop. After a short time, she realizes they won't help her and she places her hands on the box. She focuses on trying to use her power and the top of the glass box begins to waddle like waves of water. Her hands begin phasing through the glass. She stops and tries to pull them out.)
Dr. Schwenkman: (Says casually) All the way to the bottom; keep going.
(The young woman's tears of blood leak from her face and splash all over the glass box and her shirt. She starts shaking and she quickly pulls her hands up in fear, only to have her flesh rip from her bones and remain inside of the box. She screams as loud as she can and can't process her thoughts enough to take any other action accept cry and hold her skeleton hands up to her face. After about 4 seconds of yelling, she starts have a seizure and the side of her neck bursts with blood as well the side of her head. She falls to the ground and dies nearly instantly.)
Dr. Schwenkman: The subject made better progress on this trial which means we're getting somewhere.
Kravid: Good. We wanna make sure this works perfectly with no mistakes.
(The Englishman walks over to the young woman's body and hovers his arms around her. Joshua and Rachael are confused at what he's doing. Seconds later, the woman wakes up with all of her injuries healed. She looks around in confusion.)
Young Woman: Where am I…? What is this place?
Englishman: (Smiles) Your soul can't escape that easily in my hell.
(The Englishman places his hands on the sides of her head and restores her memories, even up to her recent misfortune. Her face transforms from confused to terrified. She can't help but to scream out in agony as she relieve the moments of her life in the lab. She plops over on the side of the floor and security comes in and quickly takes her away.)
Joshua: This place is Hell…
Englishman: An I am it's gatekeeper. (Approaches Joshua and offers him a handshake) Welcome, Mr. Jackson, I am Linderman the 3rd, or Linderman JR.
Joshua: (Happily shakes his blood soaked hand) I'm Joshua Jackson, your new employee. As I'm sure you know, I paint the future.
(A darker-skinned lady walks in with a package and brings it to Linderman's table right beside him.)
Linderman: Ah, thank you, Ms. Deveaux.
Deveaux: How many times do I gotta tell you? Please, call me Simone.
(On first sight, something is triggered in Joshua Jackson about this woman.)
[New York]
(On a rooftop in New York, Peter stands on the edge looking down at the city in a deep state of pity for some unknown reason. Peter is startled to see Sylar suddenly standing behind him in a long black coat.)
Sylar: I hope you're not planning on jumping again, Pete. (Cringes) Sorry, I didn't mean that.
Peter: You did.
Sylar: (Sympathizes) You know what your problem is, Peter?
Peter: What that I don't go around pretending to play hero after killing countless people.
Sylar: Correction- maybe like one or two dozen people, but no. Your problem is that you don't know how to master your own power.
Peter: I borrow power one by one from people I come in contact with, there is no mastering borrowed powers.
Sylar: No I mean your power. Peter, you could've saved that woman and her child today but you chose not to because you were scared and lost in your own self pity. Back in Kirby Plaza you had all the abilities in the world plus my own and you were still holding back punches. You couldn't stop me because you were weak! You couldn't even stop me or your father! The last few months you've been teaching me how I can be a hero and save lives, well I think all that training has led me here back to you!
(Peter just glares at Sylar in silence but a part of him knows he's right.
Sylar: You need to work on yourself, even if it is difficult.
(Lighting gently storms through the clouds and Sylar's body emits subtly streams of electricity around it and s arms begin freezing like ice.)
Sylar: What is this…?
Peter: What's happening?!
Sylar: I don't know, Peter, I don't know what this is.
(The building lightly shakes beneath their feet and the two of them almost fall to the ground. Sylar looks up in terror at the site of Peter glowing.)
Peter: What?! NO!
Sylar: Peter it is now or never, control your power now or a lot of people are gonna have a pretty bad night!
Peter: I don't- ok- okay. (Controls his breathing) Okay. I'm calm.
(The light goes away and Peter calms down.)
Peter: That was Ted's power.
(Sylar lifts his hand and tries to recreate the ice but is unable to.)
[France]
(Underneath a large lens and bright fluorescent light, a long 12 inch needle is stabbed into a woman's neck as she lies on an operating table. Very carefully the needle is extracted and she lets out a squeal at the moment of extraction.)
Antoine: (Examines a neon blue chip taken from her neck) Mytho. This is more advanced than the last three.
Claude: Seems our boys have switched things up a bit with a little upgrade. Can you dissect it?
(Antoine carefully places it into a container beside him.)
Antoine: Meuf is safe. She will be sore in a few hours, so make sure her "business" is finished fast.
Claude: I owe you more than you know.
Antoine: You owe me more than YOU know. Whoever these men are, it shouldn't take them long to find me. My home is compromised and I will need refuge.
Claude: I know a guy who can help you. How does America sound?
Antoine: This protest started because government leaders are making us do something against our will. America is one of the first countries to make this a mandatory law; why would I want to go there?
Claude: (Nods) In that case, I hear Australia is wonderful around this time.
Antoine: Ms. Sanders, please, get up. My contact will be waiting for you to sell your goods.
Claude: (Looks at Sanders) Her neck's gushing a good one. You sure you shouldn't patch that up?
[Early morning, New York]
(Peter is walking through the noisy streets and sees the entrance of a studio not too far from him. He enters and looks around to see no one around to greet him.)
Peter: Hello? (Closes the door and approaches the receptionist's desk) Anyone here?
(The female instructor enters from the back and is surprised, but very much happy to see Peter.)
Instructor: Strange- a little voice in my head told me to come in early and here I thought something was wrong, when really it was a blessing in disguise. I see you've decided to take me up on that offer and join us today, Mr. Petrelli. (Smiles big) I'm glad.
Peter: It's something new, ya know. I've had a lot on my mind lately and thought I'd try something new.
Instructor: Well. (Walks up to her door and flips the sign from "CLOSED" to "OPEN") My yoga isn't so much as new, but becoming familiar with what is familiar to our bodies. It sounds a little complicated, but once you're doing the practices, you'll know.
(The door is suddenly opened and in comes Peter's mother Angela.)
Angela: Ooh, looks like I made it just in time.
Peter: (Dumbfounded) Ma?! What're you doing here?
Angela: Same reason why you're here, dear- to twist my bones and break a few limbs to feel alive. (Smiles)
Peter: (Smirks at her joke) You saw me here in one of your visions, didn't you?
Angela: Don't be so foolish, son. (Winks at him with a smile and follows the instructor toward the back)
(Peter can't help but to just smile at his mother's invasive yet subtle attitude.)
[Lars and Mohinder]
(On a private plane, Mohinder has accepted the job offer from Lars and now the two of them, along with Mohinder's adopted daughter Molly, are flying to their next destination. Molly is in the seat across from them reading a book and both Mohinder and Lars sit at the window having light drinks.)
Mohinder: You haven't told me much about your corporation or the people who work for you. Will I get to meet some of your employees other than the flight attendants and the pilot?
Lars: See, Dr. Suresh, the corporation I work for has no name. We share a common goal and we pursue how to make that goal work. (Takes a sip of his drink) When you give something a name you give it a label and by doing so, limit what "It" can become. We are everywhere, Mohinder; we're like the wind. You never truly see us, but we're everywhere. (Smiles) Now, onward to other things; The President has just given a speech about these evolved humans and how the government branches are getting involved. You don't have to be a genius to know how this is gonna end, Mohinder. People are gonna riot because they're scared and all heck is gonna break loose and eventually a revolution will possibly get started. In fact a revolution will get started at some point. It's begun in France as of yesterday and soon will reach the States. We wanna try and hold it off as long as we can and prevent it if we can.
Mohinder: Well I would take comfort in the idea of preventing a catastrophic war throughout the countries. In that case, what would you suggest we do next?
Lars: There's a man who owns a big corporation in another country. We're going to try and recruit him as well; we start there.
[Ruidoso]
(Early in the morning, Elle wakes up pumped and ready to start the day. Her attire is suitable and her bag is fully packed for the journey ahead. She steps outside and stares out at the beautiful mountains ahead with Knox standing right beside her.)
Knox: You've only been here a day; how do you already have a bad full of stuff?
Elle: Gotta be prepared for anything, right? Plus you never know when we're gonna need a snack.
Alex: (Approaches the two of them) I doubt you've taken a hike this intense before. May-be it would be best if you traveled lighter and brought just a few bottles of water. (Turns to Knox) And what about you; where's your bag?
Elle: (Laughs) He's a big scary pants. He's afraid of the terrifying bears and big kitties!
Alex: Oh my. Well one thing wildlife is they- most of the time leave you alone as long as you're not hostel or invading their territory.
Knox: Sounds like turf wars to me. Either way, it doesn't sound like it'll end good for the outside suckers in question waiting to be eaten.
(Elle sets her bag on the ground ravages through it a bit and takes out a Ziploc bag with a sandwich and a bottle of water. She leaves the bag and continues on down the dirt trail alone.)
Alex: I guess we're taking too long. See ya around I guess. (Quickly jogs to catch up to her)
(Knox looks down at her bag sighs in disbelief over his next action and secures her backpack over his shoulders. He then proceeds to follow the two of them.)
[Matt Parkman, LA]
(Matt Parkman sits on the floor making incomprehensible baby sounds and sliding his son's toy train back and forth across the carpet. There is a knock on the door and the doorbell rings nearly simultaneously.)
Janice: (Walks over the two of them) Don't worry; I got it; just please keep distracting him.
(Janice opens the door and it's their babysitter.)
Janice: Oh, hey, Ariel; you're here a bit early.
Ariel: Yeah, I was out riding my bike nearby and just hoped I wouldn't be too much of a bother by coming by a few minutes early (chuckles).
Matt: Uh, you know, that's fine. That's completely fine, Ariel. Why don't you put your bag down on the couch and get a bit comfortable.
Ariel: Okay, sweet. Thanks, Mr. Parkman.
(Matt's cell phone begins to ring from the kitchen and Janice quickly goes to fetch it.)
Matt: Janice, honey, would you mind answering it?
Ariel: So, Mr. Parkman, how's it going at your detective job? Have you caught any premium bad guys recently?
Matt: Uh, just the average, no good dealers and homicidal crazies; but other than that, nothing too big
Ariel: Interesting. So what made you wanna be a cop in the first place?
Matt: I just wanted to protect and serve and be there to help people who couldn't help themselves.
Ariel: You became a cop for that? I mean no offense, Mr. Parkman but cops nowadays aren't the upstanding models kids look up to anymore.
Matt: I think I'm starting to notice that actually. There aren't too many commercials where you see cops being the hero anymore. In fact, I mostly see the bad guys winning these days; which honestly kina scares me.
Ariel: You really think bad guys are winning too much nowadays?
Matt: It doesn't really matter what I think. (Looks over at Matty joyfully playing with his toy) All that really matters is family, right?
(Matt stands and sits on the chair beside the couch Ariel relaxes in.)
Matt: We don't know too much about your family; you never really talk about them. Are you close?
Ariel: Um… Ye-ah- a bit too close actually.
Matt: You can never be too close. Cherish them while you can. You never know when the day might come you all get separated. (Looks over at Matty again) It's one of the worse feelings.
[Paris, France]
(In a private section of the airlines, Antoine exits a vehicle along with Claude and Sanders. They approach a small plane at the top of the stairs waiting to greet them is Lars.)
Lars: Ooh, this must be the hot package you were talking about.
Antoine: Nope, that was still me. I'm always the hot package.
Lars: (Laughs at his joke) Of course; no disrespect, ole friend. Come on; get your butts in here so we can get going. My new colleague and I have got so much on our plate.
(Everyone enters the jet and in the back alone Mohinder I seen whispering on his cell phone.)
Mohinder: We're here in France now picking up a few individuals who may or may not be illegal occupants of the country in question.
Woman: What else can you tell me about them?
Mohinder: Three of them are entering the plane now. I can't give too much information right now, but I can once we land in the states.
Woman: It's a good thing you decided to keep an eye on him for us. This Lars is bad news and as long as you keep an eye on him, no innocent people have to get hurt by him. We will keep in touch soon.
(The two of them hang up their phones and soon after, Lars enters with his new crew of individuals. Mohinder is socked at the sight of the individuals.)
Lars: My apologies for not being completely honest with you about our little pit stop; an old friend of mine needed help and we were already headed out so I figured- why not help him out?
Antoine: (Offers a handshake with Mohinder) Ah the good doctor. You're well-known for your research. Tres Bien for your contribution to our world.
Lars: (Laughs) Alright don't hog up all the greetings. Next we have Claude- the invisible man.
Claude: (Sits across from Mohinder) Be careful not to get on my bad side, you'll outta find surprise in one of your drinks and would never even see a thing.
Lars: Lastly, we have- a beautiful blonde… who isn't- Tracy?
Sanders: (Laughs) No. I'm afraid I don't know who that is; I'm Jessica.
Mohinder: Jessica? But you died in an explosion.
Sanders: HA! As if I'd go out so easily. Where is your ladies room?
Lars: In the back but it's occupied, princess. We need to take off anyway so you'll have to wait a few minutes.
Sanders: My, so demanding.
Lars: Uh… kinda. Anyway, let's get going; we're headed to the states.
(Back in France, Meredith, along with her brother Flint, and another woman are all seen entering Antoine's former residence.)
Candice: Obviously this dude is long gone by now. There's no way he's coming back after a third time.
Meredith: Either way, we're tasked to check this place out so that is exactly what we're doing.
Candice: (Checking cabinets) Yeah, she knew the true meaning of freedom; I don't blame her for bolting. Where you on the other hand have such a tight butt for being the perfect worker bee.
Flint: You're gonna let her get away with that, Mere?
Meredith: (Sighs) Flint, please, just focus on trying to find where we need to go next.
Candice: (Mocking Meredith) Awe how cute, little blond-y is taking the nice approach. That's so sweet.
Meredith: (Aggressively approaches Candice and grabs her by the face) You're gonna see how sweet I am in a minute after you have third degree burns on that pretty little face.
Flint: Uh, Mere.
(Meredith looks behind her and sees Candice standing behind her laughing. Meredith looks in front of her and realizes she never grabbed Candice.)
Candice: (Continuously laughing) what're you walking to a yourself?! If you're trying to threaten me, I'm over here. (Smirks)
Meredith: You and your illusions. You're lucky we're on a job right now otherwise this conversation would be completely different.
(Flint is a little on edge and glances back and forth at his sister to make sure she's alright.)
Meredith: (Calms herself down) Dang it, Flint just keep looking okay! Find something.
Candice: I wouldn't be surprised if a bomb is what we find. This guy is long gone; I feel a shake in my bones.
Meredith: With you it must be a ripple, huh.
Candice: SHUT UP! (Storms out of the room)
(The phone all of a sudden begins to ring. Meredith approaches it and answers without saying a word.)
Antoine: I assume someone is listening because the dial stopped. (Clears his throat) Bonjour! Welcome to viva la France! As you are aware, I am sure, Ju m'appelle Antoine Mercier! After so long, I was sure you'd come looking for me, so I obviously will not be returning to my residence. However, I do offer something for your ambition- a chance to prove loyalty. I may not be able to defend my country during this new revolution, which burns my soul, but I can, however get a few ticks off m back and help in the process. I could've ignited a bomb in that home that's to material provided by my great friend here- Claude smiles and nod) but instead, I want to offer a solution. I can remove your chips , al-
Meredith: Not interested. We know who we're loyal to we owe them the lives they gave back to us. Sorry but no deal.
(Candice appears and puts the phone on mute.)
Candice: Are you kidding? This is our opportunity to find him and bring him in, or take him out. Probably take him out. Tell him we'll agree, meet with him and boom, opportunity. Even if they have a trap set up for us, I can create an illusion to where we can grab him without anyone realizing. (Un-mutes)
Meredith: (Sighs) If- If I do this, how will I know we'll be safe and you won't kill us anyway?
Antoine: Again, I could've blown up my home, but I spared you. Just because you were given another chance, does not always mean you should live a slave. I remove the chip from your body and you have freedom to live again.
Meredith: (Malicious) Deal, where can I find you.
Antoine: My associates do not want to fully disclose our location, but let's say we meet… In America- New York.
Meredith: I've always wanted to see the big city. Give me a time and date.
Antoine: You'll be able to do much more of what you wanted other than seeing a big city.
[New York, Peter]
(In the yoga studio, the Instructor is giving a lesson to the multiple participants while she physically displays a multitude of positions for relaxing breath work.)
Instructor: (Breathes) Good… Breathe… exhale… relax… (Inhales deeply once more) Our heart keeps the flow of life in out minds, in our bodies, and in our spirits… (Long exhales) Clear our hearts and we clear negative anchoring ideals, feelings, and beliefs which keep us from experiencing- (Quickly exhales) self fulfilling experiences. (Gets into normal stands and grounds herself) Take all the time you need to reground and just sit with this new found energy. Let it marinate in your body and if you have any impulsive body movements just let your body freely express them. Let the healing energy go where it wants to heal the body.
(Time passes and everyone is preparing to leave the studio.)
Angela: Well that was refreshing, don't you think? I feel like cleared nearly a decade of baggage I was unaware I was still holding on to.
Peter: (Smirks) Glad you enjoyed it, ma.
Instructor: So, Mr. Petrelli. As a mentor and coach and I can't help but put myself in the position of sheep herder and I sense one of my sheep is surfacing anger.
Peter: I'm not angry. This was good actually. I enjoyed it. (Fakes a smile)
Instructor: This is good you're feeling this come to the surface. Meditation yoga is something many people thinks is something that makes us feel better, but I choose to see it as a way to clear out what keeps us from accessing stronger more POWERFUL parts of ourselves. Sometimes unproductive emotions, such as stagnant anger lingers at the face of our true selves- it becomes the persona. (Takes another long slow breath) I guess I'm not as grounded as I thought. (Giggles and smirks) I'm still on cloud nine. (Closes her eyes and awaits)
Peter: (Hesitates) Thank you for the lesson. (Grabs his mat and bag)
Instructor: The world isn't going to always offer you a way out of unacknowledged turmoil, no matter how large or small. Always remember that. Hiding is not the same as freedom.
(Peter understands she's talking in codes and lowers his mat to ask her a question.)
Peter: How long has you been doing this?
Instructor: As long as I've been alive. Yoga is not the full picture of what I do. It is only one side of my created inner world. What I am; who I am are all extensions of what makes us- power. We are raw infinite power- experiencing life through humanity, but- still we hold on to unneeded experiences from the past as a way of survival or to cope with society. Human history has taught us many things, but I'm here to help as many people see that we can live in a world of our own design, a world of light, power, and love. I've been that since I was a little girl because that is who I am, but if you mean, how long have I been expressing that aspect of myself through yoga, then I'd have to say about 4 years.
Peter: (Nods his head) Wow… You're so good at it.
Instructor: I couldn't be afraid to be myself, Peter. Once I found the bravery to do that, I found an outlet to express that. The outlet has its own hurdles sure, but the thing you have to offer makes them a lot easier to deal with at the end of the day… once you get used to it.
Peter: So you help people find who they are and find their destiny?
(It may be small, but Angela sees a small peek of the old Peter and it's enough to put a huge smile on her face, which no one else sees.)
Instructor: I do my part yes. People like you, who do not achieve the ideal results are the ones whom I know I'm reaching on a deeper level. Some people come here searching for a high and sometimes a way to suppress more of their pain, but those who feel the pain begin the true journey of self healing.
Peter: They come in to suppress? Wh-what does that mean?
Instructor: Some people are so scared to face themselves that they used positivity as a vice to push down their pain more. They themselves preach it and practice it, keeping themselves on a pedestal and thinking everything is good, when really, they've just found a new drug to get high off and avoid feeling their pain.
Peter: … But people like to feel safe. It's human nature to want to be happy.
Instructor: Happiness and self suppression never equate when on the journey to fulfillment. These simple highs only keep our happiness at a 3 or maybe even a 3 in a half. But those blocks within us, that negative; the self doubt or anger. Those are make up the other 7 of our life journey whether we choose to acknowledge it or not.
Peter: (Teases) It sounds like you're not doing your job right in that case (Smirks).
Instructor: My job is to give these people a chance and hope they feel at least a portion of light of my beautiful revelation. I understand sometimes I'm contributing to the problem, but that is all perspective and when someone feels they're life needs a new positive direction, I can at least help in some way and save a life.
(Peter ponders on her answer for a few seconds.)
Peter: I guess there is more than one way to save a life. Being an M.T. I literally save people and I've always felt that was the most I could do. But there's so much else I could do.
Instructor: You give people a chance to further explore values of life. You've chosen that contribution for the "wheel" of life. (Stares into his eyes) You're a hero, Peter.
Peter: … Sometimes it doesn't feel that way
Instructor: You just need to feel alive during the journey. Connection is something we all need and sometimes- like… (Swallows and zones for a second) me- addictions, cutting, or even other vices can be cry not just for help, but connection- something many of us lack because we're too afraid to explore who we are and let those parts of us thrive and exist in life. I know, Peter, emotions can be an addiction, especially self pity or worthlessness. Find connection and that can be a powerful source for moving you forward toward better things.
Peter: What you can do- (Smirks) It's how you choose to save the world?
Instructor: (Slightly doubtful) It what I tell myself everyday and it sometimes takes trust- trust I do not always have.
Peter: (Prepares his arms to catch her if needed) Whoa, I hope I didn't ruin your high; you suddenly seem tired.
Instructor: (Smiles and slowly blinks) Listen, Peter, having an open heart does make you feel the pain more but it also allows you to feel the beauty more as well. I'm not perfect and I still have some depression; I also don't know how to properly stay in the positive mindset I usually am as an instructor without getting drunk off my dream and life purpose. I used my addiction a long time ago to move mountain to get that next hit, but now I'm learning to redirect that addiction into my dream. Whether that's good advice or not, I don't know, but it's the best I can do until I find a better alternative way to motivate myself.
(The air grows still and things get quiet between them.)
Peter: I'm sorry.
Instructor: (Hugs herself) Don't be. I may be depressed but this isn't my depression I'm feeling- it's yours.
(On many levels Peter is both conflicted and speechless simultaneously.)
Instructor: I sensed you were empathic. So am I. (Cracks a smile) Now if you'd excuse me. (Quickly leaves)
(Peter watches her leave but he cannot help but feel inner turmoil by how such a wonderful conversation has ended in depression.)
[Joshua Jackson, Underground Facility]
(In the hidden underground lab, Joshua is in the main office with Linderman, the Scowling man, and Erica. The all stand on the other side of the desk, except for Linderman who sits in his chair spraying down a plant which grows beautiful wide green leaves.)
Linderman: So sorry about that disturbing scenario earlier being your first introduction but I assure you there are perks to this job which are quite fulfilling- like the food per se.
Joshua: (Scratches his face) It's fine. It's best to get the worse of it first rather than later. So you, what, basically experiment on people with abilities, in hopes of accomplishing what?
Erica: Technology, Mr. Jackson; paving the way toward a much better future. Technology has always been the foundation and stepping stool of human achievement and human pentacle, so we figure, why not put that in a more literal sense- Evos used to further technology in ways we cannot. We've based technology on human behavior for decades; now with evos, we can take that next step.
Linderman: Her perspective is rather bleak and dreary. The world is experiencing an evolution in society and we- dear boy are directing the trajectory of where that evolution takes us.
Joshua: So you're experimenting on people in order to achieve… again, what?
Linderman: If I must speak so literal, the world needs to hate evos and be done with them. The issues most evos save us from are what they create. Ending them all, except for a select few will save this world but-
Joshua: So you're trying to save the world through hatred?
Linderman: No, no, we simply want to see how far we can go with evos. They exist for a purpose and we are giving them that purpose- technology. Once we learn how to fully master their blueprints, there will be no limit to what we can achieve. But first, in order to get our test subjects, we look through history and find the ones whom have died and bring them here to work as a slave labor force. My ability allows me to control the flow of life and death, as theoretically my father before me. I bring them back and they stay loyal to me.
Joshua: So why am I here again?
Linderman: To paint the future my dear boy; not for us, but for the world.
Joshua: Cool… (Casually puts his hands in his pockets and stands up straight) So where's my room? I wanna make sure I've got a cozy pad to sleep in if I'm gonna be staying here.
Erica: It is important that you do not feel like a prisoner. This place is your home; the place where you recharge after you're ventures out in the world. It is important that every part of you has some outlet to express itself and stay connected.
Joshua: (Slowly nods) Sounds like a plan.
Linderman: In the meantime, Erica, darling, why not show our new family member the premises so he'll know his way around… (She stares at him) Please.
Erica: (Nods) Let's take a tour.
(Erica, the scowling man, and Joshua Jackson both leave the room. Eventually, the three of them are seen walking down a long white hall way and pass a few employees on the way down. The two pass a large prison room behind a wall of glass and it captures Joshua's attention to where he stops in place with the other two following.)
Joshua: Huh…
(The prisoner and a female prisoner, both stand in front of the glass. The male prisoner leans against it.)
D.L.: I got something on my face?
Joshua: (Smirks) No.
D.L.: Then find someplace else to look.
Joshua: (Reaches into his bag and flips through a sketchbook) Interesting.
Erica: D.L. Hawkins- previously deceased supposedly. During a search for his wife, we were able to get him. He's not only the father of Micah Sanders, AKA the leader of Rebel, but he's also the killer of Linderman's Father, Linderman SR.
Joshua: It explains why he's so close to the office.
D.L.: Hey, I am standing right in front of you. If you got something to say, say it.
Joshua: Why haven't you walked outta here yet?
Erica: Their abilities are temporarily nullified by a gas dispensed into the air vent system. A simple injection can help perk 'em back up if necessary.
Joshua: (Puts his sketchbook away and his hands in his pocket) May I see him inside?
Erica: We would have to lock you in there with them.
Joshua: It's fine. I painted it in my sketchbook- a conversation with this particular man. I don't know what we discussed but curiosity is killing me.
(They let Joshua enter the room and both D.L. and Samantha back away. Joshua pulls up a nearby chair and pulls it up to a waist-tall table nearby. He opens his hand as an invitation to let D.L. talk with him; D.L. stands instead.)
D.L.: What makes you think I won't kill you now just for kicks? You're mighty brave, aren't chu?
Joshua: Or stupid, either way, I'm not dying here today. No, instead, Mr. Hawkins, I wanna discuss your time here. Maybe that'll lead to something interesting.
D.L.: What is this, a pep talk; not interested, so you better come with something better.
Joshua: … Yeah… (Leans back in his chair casually and folds his arms) Your son, huh.
D.L.: What're you gonna threaten me with his life again? That's getting to be old, a'int it?
Joshua: Do you miss him?
(D.L. is slightly confused but isn't going for the bait.)
Joshua: I miss my niece. She was a cheerleader. A- (Chuckles emotionally) a cheerleader-. (Takes a moment to himself) I hope one day to- (Taps his spread fingers on his chest) fix this broken thing in here.
D.L.: Why don't you have your little posse go back in time and save her life?
Joshua: (Laughs) If it were that easy. Maybe I'll suggest it, or maybe I need to play my cards right for now. (Looks over his shoulder and whispers) Shut up.
D.L.: What're you sick?
Joshua: (Looks up at D.L.) How do I live with this pain? I know you don't owe me anything, but I never hurt you and I see in your eyes you have the ability to pass obstacles with ease. Please help me.
D.L.: Your mood shifted pretty quick. I don't think you're playing tricks.
Joshua: I sincerely just want- something. (Looks up at D.L. slightly teary eyed)
D.L.: I've accepted that Micah's been gone a long time. There's nothing more I can do about that. I shut my heart out a long time ago.
Joshua: But doesn't not giving up keep them alive, or their memories at least? What did they see in us and shouldn't we abide by their image of us seen in their eyes in order to honor them?
D.L.: The man my son looked up too would never be locked up in this place.
Joshua: I see. (Sighs) Don't shut your heart out if you can help it. Our views may be different, or the same, but- sometimes our heart is all we have left.
D.L.: You wanted my opinion and you got it, not I suggest you leave before my sincerity runs out.
Joshua: (Smirks) Ok. (Slides his chair back) It's truly an honor to meet a legend.
[Ruidoso]
(Elle is seen carving her initials into a nearby tree using her lightning.)
Elli: (Laughs uncontrollably) I must have been a sharp shooter in my past life; my aim is instinctually accurate. Like al I have to do is point and shoot and I hit my target. (Aims at Knox and pretends to shoot) Pew, pew, got ya.
Knox: (Freaks out) Yeah- don't do that again.
Alex: Come on, the hikes almost over; we're nearly to the cabin.
Elle: … Go on ahead, Aquaman, I need to talk to Benny here.
Alex: Oh no, you're in trouble; she used the government nickname! (Continues to walk off) You love birds don't take too long; tortillas are for lunch!
(Once he's at a far distance, Elle approaches Knox and stares him directly into his eyes.)
Elle: I love you, Benny. (Forcefully hugs him)
Knox: (Hesitantly hugs her back) What's this about?
Elle: (Stops hugging him) I know your brother asked you to do a mission.
Knox: Yeah, I refused it, so what? I didn't wanna do it; I'm fine right here.
Elle: Ben… (Tightly squeezes both of his hands) I need to live my life on edge and with the chaos. I cannot be afraid to live.
Knox: (Chuckles) You're not. You inspire me everyday.
Elle: That's the point, I shouldn't have to.
Knox: (Looks down at his hands) You're shaking; why are you afraid?
Elle: Cause for once, I'm afraid I'm gonna hurt you, which I know I am.
Knox: Are you leaving me?
Elle: You make it sound like we're together, I'm just- (Releases his hands) Ben, you have a great gift. But you're afraid to hold on to it.
Knox: What do you mean, I still have my power?
Elle: Go over to that tree. Come on. (Grabs his arm and escorts him) Come on.
(The two of them stand in front of it.)
Elle: Punch it.
Knox: Ellenore, you do know I need people to be scared in order to use my-
Elle: Just punch it!
Knox: Okay…
(Knox slightly pulls back and punches the tree just below her signature.)
Knox: Nothing- as expected. (Shakes his fist)
Elle: It's because you're not living in faith. You're living by your own understanding and that limits you. Knox, you get strong when people are scared because you are scared. But also… you're scared of your own gift.
Knox: What do you mean?
Elle: Knox, envision a time when you were strong, call it back and punch the tree again.
(Knox closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, cocks his fist behind him, then punches the tree again. This time… the same thing happens- nothing.)
Knox: (Shakes his fist anymore) I don't think this is working.
Elle: Exactly and that is why I think it's time to go our separate ways. I wanna go, go, go, and you're too afraid to do anything! You're holding yourself back because you let fear control you.
Knox: Fear doesn't control me, Elle because by the end of it, I still go through whatever the issue ahead of me asks. I didn't wanna hike because I was afraid of what might be out there, but I still went!
Elle: (Sighs) I know… I KNOW, Knox. UGH! (Turns round in frustration) I just can't do it anymore, okay?! (Turns back around) Thank you so much for saving me when I had nobody! I forever will be grateful for you, but I am a spark who at anytime can fly off the handles and do something crazy at anytime.
Knox: Then I'll be here to slow you down when you go off the handles.
Elle: (Sighs and hugs him) I really love tortillas. After lunch, I'm headed out. It was fun here but I can't stay and you've made it clear that you feel safe here so you're gonna stay. (Stops hugging and walks away)
(Late into the night, Elle is seen walking away from the cabin slowly. She stops and takes one last look at the window and sees the laughter of Lamar and his new family laughing. She cracks a smile and continues to walk ahead. Inside the house, Knox notices that Elle has snuck out and is finally leaving everyone. He doesn't dwell too much on it and just decides to turn back to his cousin instead.)
Knox: Hey, cousin, I want you to know that I'd like to pull my own weight around here. So if you want me to do a job, I got you.
Lamar: (Smiles with excitement and grabs his cousin's shoulder) Glad to hear that cousin. (Has a heart-to-heart with him) You always follow what's in your heart and everything will be alright, just trust it. (Backs away) It'll save your life, especially on specific jobs I'll have you do. (Smacks his shoulder and continues to laugh with everyone)
(Knox realizes that he enjoys the people around him but not quite as much as they enjoy each other. Knox decides to follow his heart. He leaves without saying a word but gives his cousin a hug. Knox catches up to Elle and meets her face-to-face.)
Knox: For once, I'm doing something brave and listening to my heart. My life hasn't been the best, but I struggled through it and I'm strong, and you help remind me of what that feeling is that makes me strong. Petrelli- or uh… Some dude in a Hoodie that was Red taught me how to follow my truth, but this force I have, talking to you is mine. Bad people can change.
Elle: (Smiles and teases) I never noticed how much you talked about yourself when trying to win a "lady's" heart.
Knox: (Chuckles nervously) I'm scared to tell you everything. It scares me to even say that.
Elle: Fear is your power; you rely on it too much. (Releases herself and hugs Knox) You're not a hindrance or a burden. I'm sorry I told you that. We are not our powers, not fully. We can be better. (Stops hugging him) I see it now. I wanna explore that with you. My desire for adventure isn't just physical. I think it would be fun to explore where your true power comes from. You say I remind you of where you get your strength from, so take me there and let's explore it together so I can feel how I make you feel.
Knox: (Smirks) L.A. is only like what- 13 hours away?
Elle: Ooh you're a West coast boy. Pollution, luxury beaches and pollution here we come! (Gasps) Ooh are there cute boys?!
Knox: Oh handsome.
Elle: WHAT?!
Knox: Handsome. Oh yeah, you'll love it.
Elle: (Laughing) Can't wait for this!
Knox: Let me go get the car; I'll be right back.
Elle: Hey, Benny. I'm scared- to be happy. Even though I- am such a force of chaos. Anyway thanks for making that less scary and easier to accept.
(Knox smiles and runs back to get their car; once at the right distance, two individuals in ski masks hide behind trees ready to jump Elle. One of them talks through a tiny headset.)
German: Linderman, Elle and Knox are on the move.
Jesse: They're headed to L.A. Should we take her now or hang back?
Linderman: For now, focus on the cousin. We can track the other two later.
[Plane, Sanders, Mohinder, Molly, and Lars]
(The four of them sit in a four-square of seats near the window. Sanders takes a huge drink of wine then displays a sour face.)
Molly: Ooh, I wanna try; please, Mohinder?!
Mohinder: (Feeling awkward) Um… Molly, why don't you go over there away from the irresponsible adult.
Sanders: You saw me pour it; you watched me grab the glass. You're the one letting a little girl watch me drink it. (Smirks)
Molly: Awe, but please, Mohinder.
Mohinder: (Frustrated) Molly, no.
Lars: Just curious, Molly, that face obviously showed disgust. Even with seeing that reaction, why would you want to drink that stuff knowing it's not sweet or pleasant in taste?
Molly: The experience, duh! (Laughs)
Lars: Hmm, I like the way you think, wise one. Let's get you a drink on the house!
Mohinder: Absolutely not! She is nowhere near legal drinking age!
Lars: Right- let's get you a drink on the house when the boring parent isn't around, huh. (Winks at Molly)
Molly: (Smiles) Yes! This is gonna be so cool!
Mohinder: Molly, I wouldn't get your hopes up too much.
(Something does not quite sit right with Sanders and without saying anything, she stands and leaves toward the back. She walks into the bathroom and looks herself in the mirror; suddenly 4 alternate versions of her fill the room. She turns around to face each of them.)
Niki: (Terrified) What is this?
Jessica: I'm giving you your body back.
Niki: What, no; we had a deal! All of you said you would protect me.
Gina: (Feels sorry for her and displays a charming one-shoulder shrug) Awe… sorry, sweetie, but we're all tapped out. Time for you to face the music.
Niki: I don't want to face anything! I want-
(Jessica grabs Niki and forcefully throws her into a wall, holding her up by her jaw afterward.)
Jessica: Now listen, hone, we can keep playing this game all day but you died and you're cheating death right now. You've been given another chance at doing this life thing so figure it out! (Drops Niki)
Niki: (Holds herself on the floor scared) There is nothing to figure out. I don't wanna do this.
Jessica: (Aggressively kneels to Niki's face) You're doing this, whether you like it or not.
Tess: Jessica, Jessica; take it easy on poor Niki. She's been out of her head so long, she doesn't know what to do. We can't just forcefully throw her hand on the wheel and expect her to drive straight.
(Jessica stands and turns around to face her.)
Jessica: So what do you suggest oh perfect one?!
Tess: I suggest peace, but we're not gonna get that here with you. So as an alternative, I suggest each of us stay with Niki and help guide her with one hand on the wheel- one of ours, one of hers.
Gina: Viki might approve; you know how scary she is…
Tess: What'd ya say, Nik- we zen?
Niki: No…
Tess: Think about D.L. and Micah.
Jessica: They were the main reason she created us in the first place. She was tied down by her family but never wanted to be a part of them. She fought her feelings so much that we had to show up as a way for her to feel satisfied inside and go on to do whatever she wanted.
Tess: Good point. Niki, you're gonna have to be brave, sweetie. This is YOUR second chance and a life you've always wanted but was too afraid to pursue. You no longer have a family. Micah is off doing super hero stuff and D.L. is- well whatever, the point is you're on your own now; act like it before Viki comes and forces you into a hole.
Gina: I mean- we'll be fine cause we'll be gone but you sadly will be forced to live your life without the voices in your head, which is pretty loco when you seriously think about it. (Laughs)
Niki: I want the voices. You're there for me. I don't want it to be quiet.
Tess: (Approaches Niki and rubs her cheek gently) It's why we're each gonna be right here with you baby.
(Niki is seen in the restroom alone on the floor crying herself in an attempt to shield away.)
TO BE CONTINUED…
