Owen Story
"What did you say? Man, are you crazy? What kind of story is that?" said Trent, blushing.
Cody put a hand on the guitarist's shoulder while grinning. "C'mon Trent, if it's his best story, let hear it."
"I agree with the twerp, but spare us of the details, big guy," said Duncan lowering his unibrow in a disgusted expression.
"Guys, just wait to hear it. This story it's awesome," Owen face beamed, "it all began…"
It all began with Izzy and me. You know her, my sweet and sour first love. She is everything a man may want. She is passionate like a pre-heat oven. She has green eyes like mint-flavored ice cream, beautiful orange hair like carrot, and a delicious smile.
Annotation: Noah
"Yes, delicious and crazy as a bed bug, and a bed bug that likes to play with explosives."
My relationship with Izzy was a magical one. We fell in love at first sight, and she tenderly helped me win the $100,000 prize during Total Drama island. Then we were together in the killer grips, still on the honeymoon of our relationship when she was eliminated. And I mean both times she was eliminated during that season.
Annotation: Cody
"A magical relationship? I guess it was as magical as it can be after abandoning her at the hands of a psycho killer with a chainsaw and a hook on International TV."
We continued dating during the months between the second and third seasons. She even helped me to raise money to pay for the cheese cellar my family bought. But after blowing off her actress career, well, our relationship became a little strained. Also, having to continually run away from the RCMP added some extra problems between us.
During World Tour, I thought things would improve, being in the same team again thanks to her switching places with Sierra. But in Jamaica Izzy decided to end our relationship because we were incompatible. I'm still not sure what she meant by that. And even if I was sad about our break-up, it was for the best, mostly because she continually hit me in the kiwis.
Then I began to try an acting career but it didn't work as well as I had hoped. Man, I didn't know acting requires a good memory. So I started studying again to go to college when Noah invited me to participate in 'Meltdown in the Kitchen.' That's how we started our career as Reality TV Professionals.
Annotation: Harold
"Wait a moment. Are you saying that you were about to pursue a professional career?" asked Harold, looking at him with wide eyes.
"Were isn't exactly correct. Right now I'm studying a degree in communication and marketing," Owen made a sheepish smile.
All the presents sans Noah gasped.
"Communications? Really dude? That's awesome," exclaimed Geoff, fist-bumping the big man.
"But to go to college you didn't need to, I don't know, be smart or something?" asked Justin raising an eyebrow.
Owen raised his head proudly. "It's not so hard. I only have to pay attention in classes, and also I find a trick to pass the tests."
"That's great man, I'm proud of you." Trent patted Owen's shoulder. Then he tilted his head, "and what is that trick? I hope you aren't cheating."
"Oh no, it's not fancy. It's actually quite easy. If I fail a test I don't eat lunch that day," said Owen, his smile turned in a solemn expression.
All the guests went silent after hearing about his 'trick.'
Owen continued unfazed by the reaction of his guests. "In my first semester. I failed a test and skipped lunch. That day, I had a delicious Brie cheese in my house that I planned to eat with honey. My brothers came in a surprise visit and ate all of it, ALL OF IT," The big guy cried a little on his arm. "It was so painful that I only need to remember that day happened to put attention on class."
Duncan laughed, shaking his head. "That trick will only work for you, man."
"Next time you have a test let me know and I'll prepare you a cheese patty to motivate you," said DJ nodding with a big grin on his face.
"That's awesome and all, but can we drop this cheesy subject and go back to the story. It was getting really EXCITING," exclaimed Tyler hitting his fist with his palm.
"It was?" asked Alejandro with an unamused expression.
I think it was after the end of The Ridonculous Race when it happened. Looking at how happy was Noah with Emma, I began to wonder if I was honest with myself about what happened between Izzy and me.
I liked her and still wasn't over her, but I was also afraid to ask her out. So much time had passed that it felt awkward to just call her. I agonize over the decision like a person on a diet over a delicious chocolate cake, but I'm a brave man. So after gathering all my courage I called her just to find she had changed her number.
Man, all my hopes were lost like vanilla and caramel ice cream in the summer. Canada was too large to just go out and look for her. Maybe I could just wait 6 years for the Total Drama 10th-anniversary special or some random season like 'blondies versus redheads' or something like that. But I wasn't sure if I could wait for so long.
However, fate was on my side. One day I went to buy a Mocha Frappuccino with 6 caramel shots, double whipped cream, and chocolate topping at my favorite coffee shop. And there she was! Izzy was sitting at a table inside the coffee shop drinking a purple drink. So I went to greet her.
"Hello beauty, is this seat taken? Because my heart surely is," I told her in my deep and romantic voice.
Annotation: Noah
"Enough! STOP right there big guy. I was letting you embellish your story, but you cross the line."
"NOAH, NO! Please wait-" shouted Owen but was interrupted by his little buddy.
Noah narrowed his eyes and continued. "Just for the record. First you didn't lose track of Izzy because she and Eva used to play poker at my house every Friday until I started dating Emma. Then we moved our poker night to Thursdays."
"Second, she didn't change her number. She lost her phone, throwing it against a polar bear or so she said, and you were the first person she gave her new number. Your story's only truth is that you decided to try to go back with her after the race. And don't get me started with the last part." finished the Indian guy, taking a drink of a piña colada after exposing his friend.
"NOAAAH! The coffee shop story was a better introduction," said Owen pouting.
Noah phone ringed, "I have to take this one. Now continue with your story but this time try to tell the truth, ok?
"Yes, dad," replied Owen, still pouting.
Ok, all I said about the race, being honest with myself, and the courage is true. But maybe I exaggerate in some details. For example it's true that I meet Izzy every Thursday at Noah's house.
Well, it was on one of those Thursdays. Emma and Kitty couldn't come to play, so it was just the four of us, the E-scope team and me. That day Izzy was smiling impishly, not laughing loudly or aggressively, only making a roguish smile.
She ended up cleaning all of us that night, but only because my mind wasn't in the game since I was trying to ask her out again. I'm really a great poker player. Eva said that it's because I always look either happy or confused.
Well, I waited for Eva to go into the kitchen to help Noah bring the pizza, and then I made my move.
"Izzy, there is something I want to tell you," I said in a serious tone.
"What happens Owen? Do you want a rematch? But you said you didn't have more money. Do you want to play strip poker then? I can let you win some games to make it spicey," replied Izzy with a flirtatious smile.
I raised my hands, rejecting her tempting offer. "Oh, no! I just wanted to ask you if you want to have dinner tomorrow with me. Well, I guess we're having dinner together tonight, but I mean just the two of us." Yes it was a little awkward. But I swear it sounded better on my mind, really.
"Mmmmh, like on a date?" asked Izzy putting her finger on her chin.
"Yes, I'm asking to go out on a date," I said, twiddling my finger. I was so nervous and sweating buckets. It was like I was a high schooler all over again.
"Let me see my schedule for tomorrow night," said Izzy putting on some glasses and looking at a small agenda. "No, it seems I don't have plans for tomorrow's night," then she threw the agenda out of the window. "Let's meet at Jurassic Plate at 19:30."
Annotation: Noah
"I just want to mention that the agenda she was looking at was MY agenda."
I bit my lower lip. I love Jurassic Plate! I mean it's a buffet, it's delicious, and those dino-sized rations are the best. But it wasn't exactly a romantic place, especially if I wanted to ask her to go back together.
So I tried to change her mind. "But Izzy we have eaten in the Jurassic hundreds of times. Don't you prefer another place? What about One Ninety or Auberge du Fromage?" Those are some of the best and most expensive restaurants I have tried before.
"Nope, Jurassic Plate. It's decided," she said, nodding and laughing just as Noah and Eva came back.
Well, it was done. I invited her. Maybe it wasn't a fancy restaurant, but a dinosaur-themed family buffet could also work for a romantic date right, right? To say I panicked was an understatement.
Annotation: Harold
"Hey, dinosaurs can be sexy! Gosh. The Triceratops Porsus length and form of its horns were used to attract mates. Just imagine that your natural weapons double as your most attractive feature. That would be AWESOME! Don't underestimate dinosaurs."
And before I realized it was time for the date. It wasn't a formal dinner, but I decided to at least look my best. So I went with a white shirt with Toronto's Maple Leaf on the left chest, black pants, and a red and black flannel jacket. I also groomed my hair slick back. I wished I had a photo because I was as good-looking as Alejandro.
Annotation: Alejandro
"Ni en tus sueños[1]."
Then I went to the restaurant. I was nervous. Even if I have been on dates before, it felt like the first time. I bought some chocolates, but no flowers. Izzy didn't like flowers, except daisies or hibiscus, which she could eat. Anyway, I came to the restaurant on time, and she was already there.
I have to say I was a little disappointed. Izzy was dressed in that old green outfit she used on TD island. I mean, that two-piece outfit is very sensual, but I expected her to be at least as serious as me about this date. But it seemed that I was trying too hard, and she wasn't trying at all.
She started to wave at me as soon as I entered the place. I made my best smile to hide my disappointment and sat in front of her.
"Wow Owen! You're so handsome today. Not that you're usually ugly or anything, but today you went the extra mile," said Izzy smiling as always. I really love that smile.
"Thanks. You also look as charming as ever," I said, rubbing my neck.
Annotation: Duncan
Duncan held his sides laughing. "Hahahaha, charming as ever. Did you really say that?"
"Hey, I can be a real gentleman if I put my mind into it," said Owen, farting as soon as he ended his sentence. "Hehe, Sorry, right now I wasn't putting my mind into it."
"C'mon dude, don't lose focus. Less farting and more storytelling," Geoff drank a sip of his beer while looking intently at Owen. The party guy was really invested in the story
"Hehe, you're such a gentleman," replied Izzy chuckling. "Now that we're here, let's see who can eat more T-steaks."
"Izzy, I'm not sure. It's not the kind of dinner I was planning," I said while sighing. It was tempting to compete and eat as many steaks as possible, but that wasn't exactly romantic.
She tilted her head. Izzy seemed to be thinking or something. Then she insisted, "Owen, are you ok? It's a buffet! Our score is still 68 versus 3, and today I don't feel like losing."
Annotation: DJ
"Man, are you saying that Izzy beat you 68 times on eating contests?" exclaimed DJ with wide eyes.
Owen smiled, shaking his head."Of course not. At that moment I beat her 68 times, and she beat me three."
"C'mon DJ. How can you think this eating machine can lose against her. I mean, he eats even while sleeping," said Noah, while walking to the drinks table to look for another screwdriver.
"Hey! It's Izzy who we're talking about. That gal is incredible. Remember how she beat Chef?" said the Brickhouse while taking a sip of his piña colada.
"I'm more impressed that she beat you 3 times man. How did that happen?" Cody told Owen, rubbing his chin.
Owen laughed, "Well, the first time was a pretty funny stor-"
"Alto ahi[1]. Before starting a new story, can you end the current one? Remember we're in the middle of a competition," said Alejandro, interrupting the big guy.
"He's right. I want to know what happened next, eh," said Ezekiel, looking with sparkling eyes at Owen.
The big guy blushed and apologized. "Hehe, Sorry, let me continue…"
"Sorry Izzy, but I don't want to compete against you. I just want to have a normal dinner with you, no challenges, no bets, no contests, not knife juggling. Just you and me dining and enjoying each other company," I told her, trying to make her understand.
"Fine, as you wish, if you want to run away, do it," replied Izzy, she looked upset, but I really wanted this dinner to be magical.
We get a normal dinner from the buffet, 2 T-Steaks with an egg, a bowl of paleo-salad, some raptor-sausages, 2 stego-meat pies, and a side of pleisto-fries and a diet coke. And for me the same but with a Tricera burger and a dino-sized coke.
Annotation: Justin
"Ugh! And that's the normal dinner? My beautiful body almost got some extra pounds just imagining it," said Justin, frowning with disgust.
Well, the dinner was delicious, but the conversation was a little slow. I studied a full week to learn about the things she likes, fireworks, horror movie tracks, explosives, aliens, and government conspiracies. But nothing worked.
"And then I learn that fireworks are poisonous, so you can't eat them. Even the ones that already explode," I told her trying to start a conversation.
"Hehe, I also thought about eating explosives once, but the barium nitrate is too bitter. I prefer eating gravy, you know. The other day I went to a Quebecer restaurant and they have great poutine. I tried to get the chef's recipe, but they called the police when I threatened him hehehe. Why do people always expect the worse when you end your sentence with 'or else,'" she said, laughing happily, but it was clear she didn't want to talk about explosives.
"That's is so true. Anyway, the other day I bought the soundtrack of that Halloween movie, you know the old one directed by John Carpinter. It was very spooky and awesome," I said. To be honest, the soundtrack was boring, repetitive, and eerie, and it made me nervous. Still, I remembered she used to love it, so I bought it.
"Silly Owen it's Carpenter, and Halloween is a great movie. The other day I watched it with Eva, she was really scared even if she didn't admit it. She even threw my TV out of the room. Talking about Eva, she taught me to cook Kama, which it's a dish her grandmother taught her. You make it with barley, rye, oat, and pea flour. It's not bad, and I think I can make it again if you want to try it," Izzy looked at me with a big smile that showed her beautiful teeth.
She changed the subject again. I was intrigued by that Kama plate, but I didn't want to start talking about food and bomb my own date. So I thought and thought about something else to talk about and started again.
"I heard in the radio that the commissioner of the RCMP(Royal Canadian Mounted Police) was in cahoots with the Reptilian," I whispered. There was no way the reptilian would fail to get Izzy's attention.
And I was right, her eyes sparkled. "That could be true! You know the Reptilians are aliens, and the RCMP is always trying to stop me from revealing the truth about the UFO sightings on Nova Scotia," she whispered really excitedly. It was awesome, but then she suddenly became silent, "talking about Nova Scotia, did you try Nova Scotia oatcakes? They are big as hockey's puck and covered in chocolate. I tried one while running away from the RCMP…
I gave up. There was no way to make a conversation with her. Somehow we always ended talking about food. We ate and made small talk about fried chicken, Canadian bacon, and ostrich meat. The dinner was a total failure. There was no way I could ask her to come back together after that.
In the end, I tried to pay for her dinner but she had already paid the bill. That's just like Izzy. She never liked to be invited. I then walked her home.
Annotation: Trent
"Ouch! Sorry man, that hurts," said Trent leaving his empty glass on the floor.
Owen took a sip of his beer and smiled at his friend. "It wasn't that bad. But there is more after that. We were walking…"
We were walking near the piers. It was a cloudy night, just like my heart. Izzy walked in front of me, playing a game. She could only walk over the lines on the floor.
Izzy was like the sun, so full of energy and passion. You can go out with her 100 times to the same place and every time would be different.
Then I realized that I didn't care tonight was a failure. It was a fun night. And it wasn't like I couldn't try again. Next time I will surely make the perfect date and tell her how I feel.
Izzy then stopped a moment. The lines on the sidewalk ended, and the next one was far in front of her. So she put her tongue over her lip and made a somersault jump, trying to reach it. But she fell short and landed on her butt a few inches away from the line. I ran to help her stand up and to be sure she was ok.
"Darn it, it seems like today isn't my day, eh Owen?" Izzy said, shaking the dust from her skirt just after I helped her stand up.
"You didn't have fun today, did you?" I asked her. I regretted asking that just after I asked. But my words were out of my mouth before I realized it.
"It wasn't your fault. It was mine. I'm sorry," replied Izzy in an unusually serious tone. "It must have been troublesome for you."
I waved my hands, panicking."Oh no, not in the absolutely. It wasn't troublesome at all. "
Izzy looked away, putting her hands over her head. "You know. I had this crazy plan in that we could remember how it was before, you know, when we still dated. Do you remember our first date?" She asked, doing a cartwheel.
"Of course I remember! You steal some food from Chris, and we had a picnic just before I busted my jaw during the second season," I chuckled while remembering. "Man, that hurts."
"Not silly, I mean our first true date. Out of the show," Izzy replied, standing on her hands.
I kept thinking. I thought it was nothing special. We were both in Toronto before she went back home. I kept standing there, trying to remember it.
Then it came back to me. Never in my 20 years in this world I regret being stupid as I did at that moment.
"It was at the Jurassic Plate. We had a buffet challenge to see who can eat more T-steaks. It was the first time I beat you at something," I replied. I couldn't believe I had forgotten it.
Annotation: Duncan
"Fuck Owen. How can you forget that?" rebuked the delinquent shaking his head.
"Sheeesh, don't interrupt him," said Tyler, who was entirely into the story.
"I thought we could have fun like in the old times. I even dressed like on that occasion, but you didn't want to challenge me. I even try to talk to you about food as you always do. But you only change the subject to random topics. When did our magic end?" Izzy said, her stare lost at the cloudy sky.
"I don't know, probably in Jamaica when we broke up," I said while opening the top buttons of my shirt. I felt so ashamed. She really cared about the dinner, but I only cared about myself and my feelings.
"Why did you break up with Izzy? Izzy tried to remember it, but she couldn't," Izzy asked me in a low voice. I almost couldn't hear her.
I rubbed my head. Talking was just reopening my old wounds, but I couldn't stop myself.
"You forgot? After the plane fell over us, you became a genius and said we can't date anymore because we were incompatible," I told her. It was easy as I repeated that conversation dozens of times in my head.
"It seems like Brainzilla wasn't as smart as the army thought," she replied with the saddest expression I have ever seen.
I don't know what happened, I just didn't want to see her like that, so I said whatever came to my mind, "Iz, did you want to give us a second chance?"
She looked at me with a shocked expression, then smiled, "Izzy can be pretty wild sometimes."
"I know I used to date her."
"Izzy bites when she is bored."
"Don't worry. I had enough flesh to be bitten."
"Izzy can hit you in the kiwis a lot by accident," she told me. I cringed, but only a little.
"I will get a groin protector," I won't let something like that that break us apart.
She then jumped over my shoulder and kissed me tenderly on my mouth, she was upside down but it was the best kiss I had had in my whole life. And I must say that I have a lot of experience kissing chicks.
I walked with her sitting on my shoulders. I don't know when but the clouds disappeared, and the starry sky illuminated our way to her home.
As we arrived, she jumped off my shoulders and in a swift movement opened the door, taking the key out of her bra.
"Well, thanks for everything Iz. I'll call you tomorrow," I said while leaving her home. Then she held my shirt.
She looked at me with a mischievous smile on her face, blushing. "Hey Big O! Eva won't be at home tonight and is late. Do you want to spend the night with me?"
"I might be a little tired to go back home," I told her and went into her apartment. This was definitely the best day of my life to date.
Owen's story, the end.
"Ok, and what happened next?" said Cody with wide eyes and a grin on his face.
"Well, I went into her apartment, took a shower, slept, and ate breakfast with Izzy. It was pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup. They were delicious," said Owen, almost drooling.
Noah rolled his eyes. "Thanks to him I lost 50 dollars against Eva, who went to sleep in my place so Izzy could be alone at theirs."
"So, after all, it was just the lame story of his first time going back with his girlfriend?" asked Alejandro, sighing but relieved at the same time.
"Eh? I don't know the details, but I lost 50 dollars because I bet he wouldn't touch her, but the number of hickeys on his neck proved otherwise," said Noah putting a disgusted expression on his face and drinking a shot of orujo.
"Hehe, Eva almost killed me because we broke her bed," said Owen laughing.
Trent almost spitted his beer, looking at the big guy with wide eyes. "Wait a minute, why did you break Eva's bed?"
"Because Iz told me we should do it on Eva's bed, so we didn't break hers," replied Owen, flustering and chuckling.
"Ok, spare us the details," said Duncan, shaking his hands.
Owen stood up, walking toward the drink's table. "Well then, I'll go and take a Piña colada. All this storytelling makes me thirsty."
"Ok, who is next," said Tyler, "I can go next if you want. My story is EXTREME."
"No, dude, let me tell mine. I assure you it will be awesome," said Geoff before ending his drink and cleaning his mouth with his arm.
Author Notes:
[1] Ni en tus sueños = Not even in your dreams
Alto ahi = Stop right there
Ok this is the first story. This time I tried a romantic story with a misunderstanding. Also, I played a lot with the unreliable narrator, especially in the first part. Do you enjoy it? Or do you prefer a more direct approach to the story?
And yes Confessionals, sorry I mean annotations. These are interruptions to give that feeling of telling the story in front of the other guests. I hope they didn't mess too much with the passing.
Now answering the reviews.
amit. avrashmi: I hope you enjoyed the story, I wonder if it was you imagined.
Total Simaniac: Yes the episode was like a big reunion special. I tried to mix some comedy and also turn down some animosity. I hope it worked well as an introduction.
Fernanda15fa: Yeees, it's based in a true story, because when I party with my friends usually nobody brings food but everyone brings something to drink, and we end buying pizza.
And yes, it's the story is about Izzy.
AwesomeCream810: I'm glad you liked it. I wanted to try writing different small stories, but then I had the crazy idea of joining all of them in a single big story, and this is the result. I hope you enjoyed it.
As always, thanks for reading and I hope you like it, no forget to review.
