A/N: Hello again! I'm back with another short update. I decided to try to include a small bit with Emmett's point of view at the end. I might try to do more of his point of view from now on as I've done that with other stories on here, but I'm not quite sure yet. We'll see later. As for now, please enjoy and thanks for the continued support.
OOOOOOOOO
Sadie glanced over at her teammates as they moved around on the court at her first volleyball game. One of them hit the ball up into the air in her direction and she jumped into the air and knocked it over the net, slamming it into the ground. The crowd of onlookers cheered loudly, Emmett the loudest of all. She could hear Esme and Carlisle clapping their hands politely in the stands as they watched. Sadie slapped her teammates' hands and moved back into position as the current server prepared to serve the ball once more.
Are you ready to come yet?
Sadie shook her head to get rid of Sam's voice. It hadn't been the first time that he had asked her the question since she had texted him a few days ago. She hadn't told anyone about the text or what she intended to do if something happened that she wasn't prepared to deal with. She was just concerned that Edward would hear her thoughts or that Alice would pick up on it using her psychic powers and that she would have to deal with the rest of the house. True, Rosalie would be the only person that would be happy to see her go and Esme and Carlisle wouldn't stop her from going with her own kind, but the rest of the house would fight like hell to keep her from leaving. Especially Emmett.
He'd probably grab me and try to run away with me to the ends of the earth, Sadie thought, moving across the court to help her teammates with the ball. He'd find us a little house in the middle of nowhere and feed on the wildlife around the place and do his best to provide for me. And he'd make love to me every night…
Sadie bit her bottom lip at the thought and shook her head to clear away the images that came with it. The last thing that she needed was to get distracted by the thoughts of how Emmett could touch her and what it would feel like to have him against her body, to have him move inside of her in the most intimate, carnal of dances known to man. It was bad enough that she had had heard her sister and Felix in their bedroom when she was younger, when they had thought that she was dead asleep and couldn't hear them. She didn't need to think about how she'd react to having Emmett touch her skin with his roaming hands, his mouth or his tongue in places that no one had ever touched her before and where she wanted no one but him to touch her.
Stop thinking about him, Sadie chided herself mentally, releasing her bottom lip as she knocked the ball over the net once more, scoring yet another point for her team. Nothing like that can happen between you and him. He might want it and deep down, you might want it, but you know that it can't happen. He's a vampire and he has Rosalie to love. He's always had Rosalie and he will always have Rosalie. She'll guarantee it and you have to make sure that nothing changes that. No matter what happens and no matter how much it hurts to see him with her. No matter how he makes you feel or what happens when it's just the two of you together. You have to let him go and live with the woman that he's been married to again and again and again.
"Go Sadie!" Emmett called out from the stands, clapping his hands together.
Sadie glanced over her shoulder at him and saw him standing on his feet. Alice and Jasper were seated on one side next to him, watching him with amusement. Alice caught her looking and smiled, raising a perfectly shaped eyebrow. Sadie shook her head and looked back at the game as the ball moved onto her side of court once more. She darted around the court with her teammates, passing the ball around and over the net, trying to score a point over the other team. Their team scored another point and the other team's coach called a timeout.
Sadie walked over to the sidelines and helped herself to some water from the cooler. One of her teammates, a tall girl with long blonde hair nudged her with her elbow. Sadie raised her eyebrow at her.
"That boy in the stands seems to really like you," she commented, moving her eyes in the direction of Emmett from where he was shouting a chant. "I've seen him before. He's the cute doctor's adopted son, right? The same one that adopted you?"
Sadie hummed an affirmative and sipped at her water. "He's married though. Emmett, he's just really supportive and hyper. I think he's had too much sugar tonight before he came here. Esme likes to bake and he likes to eat, Jane. You couldn't tell by looking at him, but he's a pig when he wants to be."
"You know he could always dump the other woman and get together with you," Jane said, helping herself to her own water. Sadie glared at her. "What? Just because the good doctor adopted the two of you, doesn't mean that you can't get together. There isn't any law that says you can't get together."
"I say that we can't get together," Sadie told Jane firmly. "I'm not a homewrecker. I may not like Rosalie, but I can respect people's relationships. Even hers."
"Well, he's cute and I think that you'd look good together. And I think that he's more into you than just being supportive and hyper." Jane shrugged and moved away. "That's all I'm saying."
"That's all I'm saying," Sadie mocked quietly, shaking her head. "Why do people keep doing that?"
She looked back up into the stands and saw that the Cullens were watching her. Esme waved her hand and smiled brightly. Sadie waved back and Emmett caught her eye. He blew a kiss at her, which made heat flood her face. A broad smile crossed his lips and a wicked gleam lit up his eyes. Sadie would have flipped him off if there hadn't been so many witnesses and if she hadn't been on school property, so she simply lifted her water to her lips and turned her back on him.
I really should kick his ass after all of this is over with, she told herself, crushing her water cup in her hand and tossing it into the trash as the referee called the end of the timeout.
She walked back onto the court and smacked the hand of one of her teammates before taking up her position once more. They played for twenty more minutes before the last five started up. Sweat beaded down her forehead as she braced her hands against her thighs, watching the other team's server hold the ball and call out orders to her teammates. Sadie's hazel eyes scanned the other team and then narrowed as she swayed slightly, her heartbeat pounding in her ears. She watched the opposing server jump up into the air and send the small ball flying through the air.
"Mine," she called out to her teammates, seeing the ball come her way.
Sadie jumped into the air and knocked the ball out of the air, sending it over the net where it slammed into the ground. But she landed awkwardly on her feet and felt something snap. Gasping, she fell to the ground and grasped at her ankle, feeling pain shoot up from it.
"Sadie!" Emmett's voice broke through the shouts of the crowd in the stands as the buzzer went off, sounding the end of the game and the victory for the Fork's volleyball team.
Don't come down here, Sadie thought, grinding her teeth together as she fought back tears while her teammates swarmed around her. Please God, don't let Emmett come down here. I don't want him down here with me right now.
"Girls, back up," the Coach ordered, pushing some of them back. "Give her some space to breathe." She looked down at Sadie. "Sadie, are you okay?"
Sadie bit her bottom lip to keep back the animal whine building up in her chest, but nodded. She wrapped her hands around her ankle which was already swelling up. The coach looked doubtful and glanced at Jane.
"Go get Doctor Cullen," she ordered.
"I'm already here," Carlisle said, appearing among the circle of girls with Esme and Alice at his side. "Sadie, let me have a look at you."
Sadie glanced up and her eyes widened when she saw Emmett standing just behind Esme and Alice. His eyes were wide with concern and he was rubbing the back of his neck with his bottom lip tucked between his teeth. Carlisle quickly regained her attention when he crouched down next to her and she let him pry her hands away from her swollen ankle. She hissed when he probed at her ankle and he shook his head.
"She's sprained it," he told the coach. "I'm going to have to take her back home and wrap it. She's going to be sore for a while, but I'm sure that she'll be able to play in her next game. She's a quick healer from what I have been told."
Sadie reached out for him to help her up, but Emmett made a small sound and pushed aside Esme and Alice. He reached down and scooped her up bridal style and held her close to his chest. Sadie glared up at him, wanting nothing more than to squirm out of his arms and walk on her own despite her injured ankle, but also to lean into his touch at the same time.
Dangerous thoughts girl, she told herself, looking pointedly away from him when he looked down at her. If you keep this up, you're going to end up doing something that you'll regret. Something that will destroy the family that you've ended up in. The one that's lived on so happily for so long.
"We're going to take her home now," Carlisle said, straightening and taking Esme's arm. "I'm sorry that we can't celebrate the team's victory with you, but I would like to get Sadie patched up and rested as quickly as possible."
"I understand," Coach told him before looking over at Sadie. "I will see you at the next practice where you will sit out until Doctor Cullen says that you can play again."
"Yes Coach," Sadie muttered, crossing her arms over her chest rather than wrapping them around Emmett like her body wanted to. She looked at her teammates. "Good game, girls. I'll see you around school. Have fun at the celebration."
"Bye Sadie," the girls said, waving.
Emmett turned and carried Sadie out of the gym, leading his small family out of the school. Sadie let her breath out when the night air rushed to surround her. The light breeze blew her dark hair into her face. Her eyes turned to look at Esme and Carlisle as they walked towards the crowded parking lot.
"I'm sorry that that happened," she apologized with a frown. "I should have landed better. I'm not usually that clumsy."
"It's all right, Sadie," Esme said, briefly putting a hand on Sadie's non-injured leg. "You didn't know that something like this would happen. You can't always land perfectly in high stress situations."
But she knew that something was going to happen, Sadie thought, watching Alice approach Emmett.
Emmett rolled his shoulder as he turned to look at Alice. "Al, can you reach into my pocket and fish out my keys? I want you or Jasper over there to drive my Jeep back home. I'm going to ride with Carlisle and Esme and with Sadie. And she's not going to argue about it either."
Sadie shut her mouth at the look that he gave her.
Alice nodded and reached into the pocket of his sweat pants, fishing out his car keys. She jingled them and smiled up at Sadie. "I'll see you two back at the house," she said, taking a step back. "Don't do anything fun that I'll miss. You know that I like some good drama."
"I know you do," Sadie muttered, still keeping her arms firmly crossed over her chest until Emmett tossed her slightly and caused her to throw her arms around his neck to steady herself. "Emmett! You jerk!"
Emmett smirked down at her.
"Yeah, don't do things like that," Alice said, shaking her head. She wiggled her fingers and backed away. "See you back at the house."
Sadie grumbled under her breath as the psychic vampire led Jasper away from them. Emmett chuckled deep in his chest, the vibrations moving through her body and slightly relaxing her. Sadie reached up and flicked the brim of his baseball cap with a frustrated sound.
"You can be so irritating," she snapped as he turned to follow Carlisle and Esme over to Carlisle's car.
"And yet, you love me," Emmett said, readjusting his hold on her. "And you can't deny it, Sadie."
"I'll deny whatever I want," Sadie shot back, casting a glance over at Carlisle's back. "And I really don't want you to talk about that when other people are around. It's bad enough that Alice and Jasper know about it. And I'm pretty sure that Edward knows too, with all the mind reading that he does."
Emmett jerked his chin in the direction of Carlisle and Esme. "I think that they know something's up too. The only one that doesn't know is Rosalie. For now."
Sadie tightened her grip on the back of his collar. "And she's not going to know. Because nothing is going to happen between us. I've already told you that."
"And I told you that I was going to change your mind," Emmett reminded her quietly, looking down into her eyes as they walked. "No matter how long it takes, I'm going to change your mind and show you that you can love me without being afraid to do so. I'm not scared that something's going to happen. Why should you be?"
"Because I've seen what could happen," Sadie said, lowering her gaze so that she wouldn't have to look him in the eye. "And if you had seen it all go down too, you wouldn't be looking at me like that. You'd be pushing me away as fast as you could."
"Hey," Emmett growled gently. "Sadie, look at me."
Sadie firmly kept her eyes planted on his chest.
"Come on, Sadie. Look at me. I'm not going to bite."
The hint of a smile turned up the corner of her lips at that comment and her eyes lifted slightly to meet his. Emmett's amber eyes smoldered as they looked into her hazel ones.
"I am never going to push you away," he growled gently, shaking his head. "I'm going to hold you close and love you like you deserve to be loved. Because that's what you need. What we both need. And that's what your sister would have wanted for you."
"You never knew my sister or Felix or any of my pack."
"I think that I would have liked them," Emmett said with a smirk. "And I think that they would have liked me. I am extremely likable."
"You're an ass and they would have thought so too."
Emmett chuckled. "Well, that too."
Esme held the passenger door open for the two of them and Emmett tucked Sadie inside before climbing in himself. Sadie gingerly arranged her swollen ankle on the floor as she buckled herself in behind Carlisle, but Emmett reached down and grabbed her calf, turning her so that her leg was draped across his lap. Sadie made a small annoyed sound, which he ignored and he bumped his fist against the back of Esme's seat, indicating that they should go. Sadie tried to ignore him as the car started to move, but his cold fingers started massaging the naked muscles of her calf and her body relaxed under his touch. Sadie felt his other hand wrap around her swollen ankle and the chill soothed the pain that was there, though she could still feel the prickle as her bones tried to mend themselves.
"I really, really don't like you right now," she muttered under her breath, shaking her head as she leaned back against the door. "Especially when you're touching me like that."
Emmett smiled a crooked grin at her. "That's not what your eyes are telling me, sweetheart."
"Then stop looking at my eyes. And stop doing that!"
"I'm not going to."
"Carlisle!"
Carlisle glanced up into the rearview mirror. "The massage might help with the blood circulation, Sadie."
Sadie let out a frustrated sigh. "That's not being helpful, Carlisle."
Carlisle shrugged and continued to drive. Esme glanced back at the two in the back seat and frowned.
"Should you really be aggravating her, Emmett?"
"No," Sadie said, shaking her head.
"Yes," Emmett answered at the same time with a smirk.
Sadie stuck her tongue out at him and Emmett clicked his teeth together at her. Sadie quickly pulled her tongue back into her mouth and looked away from him. She didn't want to admit that the feeling of his hands on her leg was actually good. That it was making her think about how it would feel to have him massage away the other tension in her back and have his hands move over the other soft planes of her body.
Don't think about things like that, Sadie mentally hissed at herself. You're going to get yourself worked up and he's going to sense it and be even more impossible to deal with. And that can't happen.
She glanced over at Emmett and saw him staring at her as his fingers continued to move over her leg muscles. A wicked smirk was on his face as if he had read her thoughts which she knew that he couldn't. But heat still rose up into her face.
"Stop looking at me like that or I will jump out of this car, shift, and run back to the house on my own," Sadie threatened.
"No, you won't," all three of the vampires said at once.
"Not on that ankle," Carlisle stated. "And not until you've healed."
"And if you even try, I'm going to come after you," Emmett warned, his fingers pausing on her leg for just a moment. "I will grab you, throw you over my shoulder, and carry you back to the house very, very slowly. No matter how much you squirm or hit me."
Sadie glared at him and pointed a finger at him. "You are – you are…" She made a fist. "I don't know what you are, but it's not something good."
"I think I'm good. And sexy." Emmett wiggled an eyebrow at her. "And I think that you think so too."
Sadie looked away from him. "I'm not commenting on that."
"You just did."
Sadie subtly raised her middle finger at him, careful not to let Carlisle or Esme see it. Emmett laughed.
"Maybe later, darling. When no one else can see."
Heat flooded Sadie's face. "That's not what that means and you know it!"
Emmett tried to look innocent and failed greatly. "Do I?"
Sadie looked away from him, muttering incoherently under her breath. Her face remained flushed with heat which continued to amuse the hell out of Emmett, it seemed. She was only a little relieved when Carlisle pulled up to the house and stopped the car.
"Finally!" she sighed, unbuckling herself.
Emmett slid out of the car and circled around to her side of the car. Before she could protest, he had already scooped her up into his arms and jostled her until she threw her arms around his neck. Carlisle and Esme led the way up to the front door and pressed it open. Rosalie looked up from a magazine on the couch and frowned when she saw Sadie in Emmett's arms.
"Why are you carrying her like that?" she demanded, throwing down the magazine and rising to her feet.
"Sadie got hurt at the end of her game," Emmett stated simply, moving over to the couch and depositing Sadie on it. "She won though. You should have seen her play, Rose. She's a beast on the floor."
"She's a wolf, Emmett," Rosalie reminded him, placing her hand on his arm and rising onto her toes to place a kiss on his cheek. "Of course, she's a beast."
Sadie pointedly looked away from Emmett and Rosalie as the muscular vampire accepted the kiss on the cheek. She watched Carlisle approach with his medical bag and set it down next to the couch. He pried off her shoe and sock and shook his head when he saw how swollen her ankle had become.
"It's a very bad sprain," he told her, probing at it again. "But I don't feel any broken bones."
"Are you sure that we shouldn't take her to your office and have it x-rayed?" Esme asked, hovering nearby.
Sadie shook her head. "No x-rays and no hospitals, please. I don't like going to hospitals. No offense, Carlisle. But I'm a wolf. We heal quickly."
Carlisle nodded and reached into his bag, pulling out a roll of bandages. "I know. I've had to treat a few wolves in my time here. We'll just wrap it and put ice on it. Then I'll have someone carry you up to your room and let you rest. Unless you'd rather stay down here?"
"I'll carry her up to her room," Emmett offered, raising his hand which earned a dirty look from Rosalie.
Sadie shook her head and looked at Carlisle as he began to wrap her ankle. "Can you carry me up to my room, Carlisle? Emmett, he's done enough already and I don't need him in my room messing things up."
"Hey!" Emmett frowned, but Sadie ignored him, unable to look at him with Rosalie clinging to his arm.
Carlisle nodded again. "I can carry you up there, but Esme will have to help you change out of your sports uniform. I may be used to the female body, but I do not believe that you would want me to see you like that."
"I would not," Sadie agreed, keeping her eyes focused on the doctor's hands. "Thank you, Carlisle."
OOOOOOOOO
Emmett stood just outside Sadie's room, watching her sleep through her partially open door. Carlisle had given her something that had knocked her out completely for the night and she was curled up on her side, her bandaged ankle sticking out from underneath her blankets. His heart ached at the sight of it and the memory of watching her fall, hearing the sound of her bone snap back at the game. It had been all that he could do back there to not use his speed to rush to her side and scoop her up into his arms. If Jasper had not put his hand on his arm and held him back, Emmett could have done something really, really stupid and Sadie would have never forgiven him for it.
"What are you doing?" Edward's voice met his ears quietly as the vampire appeared at his side.
"Nothing," Emmett said, not looking away from Sadie's sleeping form.
"It looks like you're watching her sleep," Edward commented, leaning against the wall by the door and folded his arms. "I thought that I was the only one that did that with Bella."
"Why aren't you with the little woman right now?" Emmett asked, hardly glancing at his adopted brother. "Aren't you usually glued to her side at night?"
Edward shook his head. "She and I had a small fight and she doesn't want me around her right now. She will tomorrow though." He glanced into the room and then back at Emmett. "Aren't you afraid of getting caught?"
"By Sadie? No, she's dead to the world thanks to the drugs that Carlisle gave her."
"I meant by Rosalie. She'd kill you if she found out that you're watching someone other than her. Especially a wolf and especially like that."
Emmett frowned at Edward's words and turned his face to look at the shorter man. "Why do you care so much, Edward? This doesn't have anything to do with you."
Edward shrugged. "I just know what it feels like to find someone that you know you can't really live without. Someone that's bad for you, but you don't care about that. All you care about is being with them and making them happy forever." He glanced back at the sleeping form of Sadie as she made a small noise in her sleep. "I just didn't think that you'd find it in an orphaned wolf girl like I found mine in Bella. Not when you had Rosalie for so long."
"Before Sadie came along, I didn't think that there would be anyone but Rosalie," Emmett admitted, shaking his head. "I just always felt like my heart was incomplete like there was something…"
"Missing?" Edward nodded his head slowly. "I understand, Emmett. I really do. I just don't know if Sadie realizes how much she really needs you right now. She's scared and thinking things that she doesn't want the world to know about. Not me or Alice. Especially not you."
"Like what?"
"She'll tell you when she's ready." Edward clapped a hand on Emmett's shoulder. "I really do hope that things work out for you two. You both need each other and happiness. Like what I have with Bella. Just don't screw it up, Emmett."
We'll have a better relationship than you could ever have with Bella, Emmett thought, watching his adopted brother walk away. And a lot less creepy.
"I heard that," Edward called over his shoulder.
"Then stay out of people's heads, asshole!" Emmett called back, looking once more at Sadie's sleeping form.
The vampire wanted nothing more than to go into that room and sit next to the bed, to touch the girl's face. To soothe away the pain that her mending ankle must be in. To breathe in her scent more closely. He had never been attracted to the scent of a wolf before, always finding the smell repugnant, but something about Sadie's scent pulled him in. Despite what he really wanted, Emmett remained planted outside the door, just watching the girl slumber.
"You're being a creeper," Alice sang, walking by with Jasper.
"He's going to get caught," Jasper added quietly, but Emmett ignored them.
Why are you so scared to be with me? Emmett wondered, watching Sadie's hand grip the pillow tightly. Why can't you let me in? I could show you more love than you have ever dreamed of. If you would just give me the chance. He nodded to himself and reached for the doorknob. I'm going to prove it to you that you deserve love. Whether you like to admit it or not, you're going to see that we belong together and you're going to have to admit it to the world that you really do love me. And you won't have to be scared anymore. I'll keep the bad things away from you because I love you, Sadie. More than you'll ever know.
"Emmett…" Sadie whispered in her sleep, causing Emmett to pause in closing her door. "I…you…"
Emmett smirked. "Me too, Sadie. Me too."
OOOOOOOOO
A/N: I had to include more of an interaction with Edward. He's not my favorite Twilight character as Rosalie and Bella aren't, but I thought it'd be a nice touch. What'd you think? Please leave a comment or two in the small box. See you next time. Thanks! Much love! -Scarlet
