6 months had passed since the battle for the throne of Heaven. Lucifer had sent all of his brothers and sisters back up to Heaven, except for Michael. Michael was sent down to Hell and his demons kept an eye on him while he worked as Hell's servant. Everyone thought that Lucifer would take up the throne of Heaven right away, but surprisingly, he didn't. He wanted to spend some last time on Earth with Chloe as well as Carlos before he and Chloe went up to Heaven to start his new job.
Amenadiel went to the police academy, since Dan submitted his application before he died and Amenadiel wanted to honor his friend. It wasn't tough for him, being an angel, and eventually he graduated and was about to start work at LAPD soon.
Maze and Eve started to date and they couldn't be more happy.
Carlos went back to Auradon with everyone that helped during the battle. His friends, especially Jane, helped him with dealing with the aftermath of what he almost did. Carlos started therapy sessions again with Linda once a week while finishing up his senior year. She really helped him understand that everyone has a darkness in them, but Carlos also had a lot of light. Heck, even Ella told him that at one point, as she said God told her that once. He took that advice to heart as he remembered what Mal said, "We are not our parents."
High school graduation came and Lucifer, Chloe, Amenadiel, Maze, Eve, and Linda came from LA to Auradon to see Carlos' graduation ceremony. Linda, Eve, and even Maze were shocked when they came to Auradon. Linda had so many questions, Eve wanted to explore everything, and Maze wanted to go torture some of the villains still locked up on the Isle, but Lucifer said no, even if Hades himself approved. They all cheered loudly when Carlos got his diploma. Lucifer hosted a party at Lux afterwards and invited Carlos' friends from Auradon to come.
Carlos decided to go to Auradon University and got into the pre-vet program there. Jane decided to go with him and chose to focus her studies in magic, specifically fairy magic, so that one day, she would take her mother's place as Fairy Godmother. She also was going to get a minor in business as she wanted to help Carlos open his own vet practice one day. And Carlos also decided to minor in magic so he could learn more about the illusion magic in his mother's ring. And that he could help and support Jane as well.
Lucifer offered Carlos to stay with him in LA for the summer as it would be around the time Lucifer and Chloe were going to go to Heaven to start Lucifer's new job as God. Dude wanted to come and Carlos couldn't refuse. Carlos helped out at Lux and started to play piano again and helped with the electronics of the place.
By the time July hit, Lucifer felt that it was soon time to start his new job. His true love, Chloe, would be going with him. And he would still be able to visit his 18 and a half year old son whenever he could. Just because he was becoming God doesn't mean that he would abandon his child like his father did.
Lucifer decided that on a certain day in the middle of July that this would be his last day on Earth, for now. He spent time with Carlos during the day, taking the boy around the world again for drinks as Carlos was still not 21 yet. As they were sitting by the beach in Jamaica, Carlos asked, "Hey, Dad? Can I ask you something?" Lucifer smiled, "Of course, son. Is this about me not being able to see you after I go to Heaven? Because I can visit you whenever I want or can. And the same goes for you coming to visit me in Heaven." Carlos chuckled, "No, I think you've made that point loud and clear several times. This is something different. Are you and Chloe going to get married at some point?" Lucifer was surprised, "Married? Well, it's something we haven't talked about, but Chloe is basically going to become Mrs. God, I guess." Carlos replied, "But does that actually count as marriage?" Lucifer then asked, "Why are you asking, Carlos? You've never asked about marriage before."
Carlos sighed and he pulled out a box, "Because I wanted to ask for your advice. I want to propose to Jane and….." He opened the box to reveal a beautiful diamond surrounded by blue gems. Lucifer said, "Carlos, are you sure? I mean, you have all the time in the world. But are you ready for this type of commitment?" Carlos sighed happily, "Yeah, I am. But I'm nervous. I've already asked Fairy Godmother for her blessing, and she gave it. But I wanted some advice on how to ask Jane. And for your blessing to get married." Lucifer started to tear up a little, "Carlos, of course I give my blessing. You and Jane are meant to be, just like Chloe and myself. Now, trust me, I can think of several different ways you can propose to the girl." Lucifer then launched into it, and Carlos chuckled softly.
Lucifer dropped Carlos back off at Lux where Dude was waiting. Lucifer said, "I'll be back later tonight after my date with the Detective. Keep your phone on you in case of an emergency." Carlos nodded, "Got it. Have a good time, Dad." Lucifer smirked and he quickly changed into a white suit.
He got into his car and drove through LA to get to his destination. At one point, he saw a policeman on a motorcycle following him and Lucifer sighed, pulling over. The policeman got off and walked up next to Lucifer, signaling to turn his car off. Lucifer asked, "What can I do for you, Officer?" The officer replied, "Know why I pulled you over?" Lucifer said, "Yes, I wasn't paying enough attention to the road, and I apologize. I've got a lot on my mind. This is my last night in LA." Lucifer took a drink out of his flask and the officer said, "Wait. I know you." Lucifer replied, "Probably. I used to work for the LAPD." "Is that right?" the officer asked. Lucifer nodded, "Oh, yes. Crime-solving devil. It was great fun, but that's over now. Since the war."
"You were in the sandbox?" the officer asked. Lucifer replied, "Uh. More of a football stadium. 6 months ago. Fought against my brother and his host of angels for the throne of Heaven. It was all very biblical." "Did you win?" the officer asked. Lucifer sighed, "Well, I won, but not without having to fly to the Silver City to save my girlfriend, burn up, prove to myself I was worthy, stop burning and stop my son before….Yeah, anyway, long story short, now I'm the Big Man." The officer was confused, "So, I just pulled over God?" Lucifer replied, "Well, not quite. I still have to ascend to the Silver City and sit one the throne. I do that tomorrow. Hold on a minute.I do know you. You're the officer who likes to drive fast with his siren on."
The officer chuckled, "Yeah, I was afraid you wouldn't recognize me. Man, I am so glad I'm running into you again. I have to thank you." Lucifer replied, "Well, I hope you bought yourself something pretty with that money I gave you." The officer smirked, "Oh, I sure did. Got that sweet foxtail for my bike antenna right there. I got that and, uh, like, a ton of cocaine. Yeah. Oh, man, it is liberating. Chasing my desires like that changed my life." Lucifer smirked, "Marvelous. Well, that's the kind of personal touch I hope to be scaling up as ruler of the universe." The officer shrugged, "Well, is wasn't all good. You know, I got in trouble as work a lot, so I will be riding that bike for the rest of my career. And my wife left me. She took the house. You know? But my new house is a boat! Yeah. A lot of great characters down by the marina. Whoo! Man, do they like to drink. Anyways, I am so glad that I got to thank you." Lucifer smirked, "Well, you are more than welcome." Lucifer went to turn his car back on, but the officer asked, "Hey, you got any more of that money, like last time?" Lucifer sighed, "My son may not be happy that I did this, but…" He pulled out a wad of cash and handed it to the officer. The officer said, "Thanks. Oh, you have a son? That's nice." "Yeah," Lucifer replied. "Carlos. Good lad. Just graduated high school. Long life ahead of him."
The officer left and Lucifer drove off into the night. He arrived at Magic Castle, an exclusive club, and pulled into the valet spot. He got out of the car and handed his keys to the valet. He turned around and saw Chloe walk up in a beautiful dress. "Well," Lucifer said. "Hello, Chloe." Chloe laughed, "Still not used to you calling me that." Lucifer was confused, "Well, don't you like it?" Chloe said, "No, I love it." Lucifer chuckled as he held out his arm, "Shall we? Can't wait to show you this." Chloe took his arm and Lucifer guided her inside, "Can't wait to see it."
Lucifer explained as he walked her around inside, "Believe it or not, this is the world's only private club for magicians. Apart from the one that I started with Rasputin. The Romanovs were furious. Yeah, Das Vernon. Do you know him?" Chloe shook her head. Lucifer sighed, "The Professor. Doesn't matter. Dad Vernon challenged a young David Copperfield to a drinking contest at that bar right there. 1971. I refereed." "Really?" Chloe asked. "Who won?" Lucifer smirked, "Well, me, of course. Couldn't help myself. Oh, my gosh. I don't believe it. Look, over there in the corner. That is Jon Armstrong, one of the greatest card magicians in the world. This way. Oh, uh, be on the lookout for secret passages."
He led her upstairs and Chloe said, "You know, I've always wanted to come here. And you do look amazing." "Thank you," Lucifer replied. Chloe continued, "You know, magic for our last night?" Lucifer asked, "Well, what could be more magical than magic?" "Auradon for one," Chloe replied. "Compared to that place, magic here is a little goofy." "Goofy?" Lucifer asked. "It's skill, cunning, and deception without telling a lie. What's not to love? Yes, I know, Carlos' world has actual magic, but sometimes magic like this is special in its own way." Chloe said, "So, like, everywhere you look, there's a puzzle to solve." Lucifer stopped her, "No, we're not gonna solve anything. When you know how the tricks work, it ruins everything." He got some drinks and handed one to Chloe, who said, "I mean, Lucifer, you really expect me to hang out here all night surrounded by mysteries and not try to figure out how everything works?" Lucifer sighed, "Chloe, you are a truth-seeker. That's what made you a great detective. But me, I'm a wonder seeker." "You seek wonder?" Chloe asked. Lucifer shrugged, "Well, also drugs, debauchery and now certain extinct whiskeys but yes, so tonight you are just gonna have to enjoy the wonder with me. Cheers."
They clinked glasses and took sips, but Chloe said, "So I understand, tomorrow, you'll become God and then know how everything works, right? No, I think it's very sweet that you wanna spend with me your last night of wonder." Lucifer chuckled, "Right, yes. About that. I was thinking on the drive over, do we really need to start tomorrow? I mean, we're having so much fun. Grandma Penelope's heart's grown three times the size thanks to her time with Trixie. And Carlos is getting ready to start college and plans to propose to Jane. Why don't we just extend our vacation a little longer?" "Wait," Chloe replied. "Carlos is planning on proposing to Jane? Since when?" Lucifer sighed, "When I spent the day with Carlos, he asked me about it. And about us." Chloe sighed, "Lucifer, yes, we're having fun, and it's been great, but it's been six months and you keep pushing back your coronation. I get it so that you can spend time with Carlos before we leave and us having quality time. But don't we have to get up there?" "Well, eventually," Lucifer replied. "It's not like the sky's gonna fall in on itself or anything. Plus, I like our quality time. And my talk with Carlos made me think of something." Chloe asked, "Are you sure? Because I feel like if we…."
But Lucifer interrupted, "Hold that thought. It's starting. Come on." He walked her over to where the show was, "This is why we are here tonight. The final show of Magnar the Magnificent." "This guy," Chloe said. "His act looks like a hundred years old." "120, to be precise," Lucifer corrected. "The first Magnar created one of the most flawless acts in all of magic, then he handed the mantle down to his protégé. And it's been handed down ever since, and tonight in a super exclusive show…." "It's being handed down again," Chloe realized. Lucifer sighed, "You just can't help yourself, can you?" Chloe chuckled as a woman came up to them, "Mr. Morningstar. Right this way." She led them to their seats as the show started.
The show started and Magnar the Magnificent was in a box with his female assistant standing by his side, "And for this, my final act on stage, I will literally conquer death and emerge resurrected!" The audience clapped as Magnar lowered himself into the box and the assistant closed the box and locked it. She then picked up several swords and started inserting them into the box. Chloe whispered, "So, obviously, there must be some mechanism in the box so that it…." Lucifer interrupted, "Tsk! Chloe, please! We're not solving any mysteries tonight." The assistant put in the last sword and shouted, "Resurrection!" She opened the sarcophagus next to her and a dead Magnar fell out of it. The audience gasped but Lucifer chuckled and clapped, "He's good, isn't he?" But then he and Chloe realized that the man was actually dead.
The show was stopped and Chloe went into detective mode and gathered everyone around, "All right, everybody, just stay calm and try not to touch anything. This is an active crime scene now. We have everything under control." "Poor Magnar," Lucifer commented. "Still, at least he died knowing his illusion was never revealed." Suddenly they heard knocking coming from the box." "Do you hear that?" Chloe asked. "Is that coming from inside the box?" "You said not to touch anything," the assistant said. Chloe had her open the box and out revealed Magnar, "What the hell is going on?" Lucifer smiled, "Magnar! He's done it again!" Magnar asked the assistant, "Erika, how could you miss your cue?" She pointed to the dead body as Chloe asked, "But if he's alive there, then who's that?" Magnar answered, "Oh, God. Jared."
Carlos was sitting in the guest suite at Lux with Dude, typing away on his computer. Dude asked, "What are you working on?" "Just writing down a proposal plan for Jane," Carlos answered. Dude was surprised, "So you are going to propose to her? When?" "Hopefully soon," Carlos answered. "Dad gave me some ideas, although some of them I immediately shot down as they seemed…..inappropriate. Plus I told him that maybe he should save some of those ideas for himself. If he loves Chloe that much, then he should marry her." He finished typing and said, "There. That sound do it for now. Maybe I should see how my dad's date with Chloe is going." He pulled out the mirror and the mirror showed Lucifer and Chloe, but he saw them taking to a magician with a dead magician in the background. "OK," Carlos said. "What?" Dude asked. "Apparently," Carlos answered. "There's been a murder at the Magic Castle that my dad took Chloe. And I'm going to assume that Chloe is in full detective mode. Maybe I could help from the sideline." He started to type away at his computer while he watched events at the Magic Castle unfold in the mirror.
"Jared Holbrook," Magnar was being interviewed by Chloe and Lucifer. "My protégé." Chloe asked, "So, this is how the trick is performed? You stay hidden in the box, and then he emerges here dressed as you and takes your bow?" Lucifer didn't want to hear the answer, but Magnar answered, "Yes, he's hidden in there the entire time. We show the audience it's empty. Uh, the interior is actually painted to give a false sense of depth." Lucifer backed away and put his hands over his ears, humming to himself. Magnar noticed, "Are you all right, my boy?" Chloe answered for him, "He just does not like to hear how the tricks are performed." Lucifer added, "No, I most certainly do not, but I'm sure that there's more that I remain blissfully unaware of." "No, that's pretty much it," Magnar said bluntly. Lucifer sighed as Chloe asked, "So do you know of anyone who would wanna hurt Jared or anyone who was angry with him?"
Suddenly a man walked up to them, "Whoa! Don't say anything else, Dad. I'm a lawyer. My father doesn't have to answer any of these questions." Magnar sighed, "Alan, you're an entertainment lawyer." Alan groaned, "Not now, Dad." Lucifer said, "Well, no worries there because we're not actually the police, right, Chloe?" Chloe replied, "No. Currently, no, we're not. Alan nodded, "Well, then I'd appreciate my dad not being harassed with questions until the cops do arrive.
They heard a shout and turned to see Ella standing there, "I can't believe it! Six months of dragging my bag to Lucifer and Chloe-less crime scenes and now, boom! You guys are witnesses. Oh, this is amazing! I mean, hmm, horrible way to end a date and, you know, horrible for the dead guy, but not horrible for me. Or does that sound horrible?" Lucifer said, "It's nice to see you too, Miss Lopez." Ella sighed, "Aww, it must be weird being on the other side of things for once, huh?" Chloe shrugged, "Takes a little getting used to. Yeah, that's for sure. So how are things going with Carol?" She was referring to Carol, the new detective that was a friend of Dan's. Ella answered, "Good. I mean, he's no you guys, but…"
Carol walked up and interrupted, "Miss Decker, Mr. Morningstar, it's funny to see you here." Chloe replied, "Good to see you and no need to be so formal. Any friend of Dan's is, you know. I'm glad you could transfer in. The department's in good hands." Carol nodded, "Yeah, I mean I have big shoes to fill, Dan's and yours. But thank you so much for securing the crime scene, keeping everybody calm. Not sure I even have to work this case, between you and Ella." Lucifer chuckled, "Lucky for us you do, which means Chloe doesn't have to be a detective anymore, I don't have to have magic ruined for the rest of my life, so we can just…" Chloe interrupted, "You know, I bet we probably have to hang here because we were witnesses to the murder, right, Carol?" Carol nodded, "Yeah, unfortunately she's correct. I'm gonna have to get your statement before you can be released."
Over at Linda's house, Linda and Amenadiel were hosting Maze and Eve for a dinner. Linda held up cocktails, "All right, so who wants to be tickled by Satan's Whiskers? There were no Queen of Hell themed cocktails. Couldn't find the right pun." Everyone got a glass and Maze said, "That's OK. I've been ticked by those whiskers before." "Me too," Eve added. They chuckled as Amenadiel noted, "Well, you two are made for each other, aren't you?" Eve giggled, "Oh, yeah. Cheers, you guys." They all clinked glasses and Eve said, "Wow, you really went all out, Linda." Linda shrugged, "Yeah, well, it's not every day that my best friend and her girlfriend depart this mortal plane to rule Hell. So, Eve, have you ever actually been there?" Eve shook her head, "No, I have not. But what an amazing adventure, huh? From Heaven to Hell and everywhere in between. And this time, I'll have the best partner with me." Amenadiel asked, "Are you ladies ready to leave tomorrow? I mean, I'll be free to fly you down right after Lucifer's coronation." Eve nodded, "Hell, yeah, I'm ready. My Maziqueen's gonna rule that throne." Maze added, "I'm gonna make you proud. Subjugating scum, grinding my siblings under my boot." They nearly started to make out when Linda interrupted, "So, Eve, have you given any thought as to what you'll e doing while Maze is ruling?" Eve answered, "I'm gonna support my girl in all her work. She's gonna be the greatest queen ever." "That's great," Linda replied. "But what will that actually look like for you? Will you also be subjugating scum?" Eve chuckled, "I don't know, I mean, I'll figure it out when we get there." Maze nodded and Linda said, "Huh. OK. Uh, well, it's time for appetizers. I made deviled eegs." "Let's do that," Amenadiel replied, feeling awkward.
Back at the Magic Castle, Ella was taking photos of the victim. Lucifer walked up to Ella, "Miss Lopez, when do you think we'll be wrapping up?" Ella sighed, "I'm not sure. I spoke to Magnar, and he explained that for this particular illusion, only one of the dueling sabers is actually sharp, the one they use to cut the apple with on stage. But this one is also sharp. Which means the killer prepared it, totally premeditated. Oh. Right, sorry, old habits. Not your problem anymore." Lucifer had covered his ears as he didn't like hearing the truth behind magic tricks, and said, "No, now my problem is I know about fake dueling sabers. I need this over and done with as quickly as possible so Chloe and I can continue our wonder-seeking date." Ella sighed happily, "You guys are absolutely adorbs. I really do miss you. Family business, I get it. You're in my prayers. For what that's worth."
Lucifer was confused, "What do you mean, for what that's worth? I thought that was worth a lot to you, Miss Lopez. Another crisis of faith?" Ella shook her head, "Oh, no, that was so two years ago. I definitely still believe. It's just….Uh, OK, this might sound absolutely crazy, but lately, I've been praying a lot, and it feels like nobody's listening. Like the Big Guy's just not there or something. I know. It's so dodo-headed. I mean, like, as if that could really happen, right? No way!" Lucifer chuckled nervously, "Yes. That would be dodo-headed."
Back at the guest suite, Carlos was typing away at his computer, "Man, this place does not have an electronic security system. Maybe to preserve the secrets of magic or something?" "I guess," Dude replied. Carlos continued typing away, "I've started running background checks on those names I've heard through the mirror. Keaton's is all over the map thanks to his social media presence. But there is very little on Magnar. Old school, I guess. Hopefully I can get something soon so that this case can be solved. My dad seems a little upset by all of this."
Back at the Magic Castle, Carol was talking to some employees, "So thee act had a live chicken and a live butterfly. This is all very helpful." Chloe was sitting at the bar listening in. Suddenly a guy stood next to her with a drink, "Hey, I haven't seen you around here before. I'm Keaton Call. You probably know me from my Instagram account, BroMagic69." Chloe replied, "I don't." Keaton sighed, "Well, four million other people do. Hey, if you wanna see the future of magic, check out my profile." Chloe nodded, "OK. Yeah, I'll definitely do that." Chloe wanted this conversation to end, but Keaton continued, "You know, if Magnar had made me his apprentice, he would still be alive. Not saying that my work saves lives, but…"
"So you know Magnar?" Chloe asked. Keaton nodded, "I was his apprentice before Jared. Yeah. Damn, Jared. That could've been me getting stabbed, if I hadn't discovered social media. My problem is I'm an innovator. I see the future. All these other old fogies, they're stuck in the past. Meanwhile, my phone is blowing up. AGT, Vegas. Magnar's climbing in the coffins. I'm on a rocket. Yeah." Chloe replied, "Wow, Magnar must be really jealous of all your success. You walking away and blowing up while he stays a small, insider act." Keaton said, "Magnar, nah, he…Look, a lot of people are jealous of me, of course. Not Magnar. Magnar's a sweet old man. Me and him are still tight. At his pre-show ritual with him tonight, we had a Magnar Mai Tai, the usual." "So you saw him arrive?" Chloe asked. "How close to showtime does he have that drink?" Keaton answered, "He goes from the car to the bar stool to the curtain. Always has. Hey, I really dig how into talking to me you are. It kind of feels like we're already dating. I mean, we're already accessorizing alike." Chloe was confused, "What?" Keaton pointed down to a bracelet on her wrist that wasn't there before. Chloe walked away, "Have a good night."
Chloe asked Carol, "Uh, can I talk to you a second?" Carol nodded, "Uh, sure, yes. Uh, can you two excuse me for a moment?" He walked away from the two employees he was interviewing and went with Chloe, "What's up? Everything OK?" Chloe nodded, "Yeah, so I think I have an alibi for Magnar. Another magician was with him from the time he got here until the start of the show. You really need to talk to him and see if….Wait, did you already talk to him? I'm so sorry. You're a good detective, just ignore me." Carol shrugged, "I'm pretty OK. Listen, I appreciate the help. I really do. But you don't have to stay. OK? Don't let this ruin your night. Everything is under control." Lucifer walked over, "That is good news. I'm sure it's in very capable hands, Detective…you. So, shall we, Chloe?"
Ella then ran up, "I just confirmed. Jarred was killed sometime in the last two hours." Chloe realized, "And no one's left since then. So you should keep holding everybody." "And that door's the only way out," Ella added. "Well, except for the secret passages." Carol sighed, "No, that is a myth. We talked to everyone." Ella added, "Which means the killer is still int he building. Locked room mystery, you guys. So, who's up for an all nighter?" Lucifer sighed while Chloe was secretly excited.
Carol then interviewed everyone there again. According to the employees, Jared was well liked and respected. He even tried to help Erika start her own show. One of the attendants said that Jarred was trying to get a show about Magnar on Netflix. Chloe tried to ask police questions during the interview, but stopped when she saw the look on Carol's face. Lucifer answered everything honestly, from talking about bribing the cop, to formally being the Devil, and admitting he's been a member of the Magic Castle since the beginning. Even said that he was ageless." Carlos was watching this all through the mirror and was laughing at his dad's honesty. But the info about Jared trying to get a show on Netflix got him curious so he typed away at his computer.
After the interviews, Chloe went up to Lucifer, "Hey. What did you say in there?" Lucifer chuckled, "The truth. It's what I always tell everyone." Chloe sighed, "I know, and I love you for that, but because of what you said to Carol, that you're his number one suspect now." Lucifer was aghast, "What? That's absurd. I'd never kill a magician. I mean, a mentalist maybe, but not an artist like Jared." Chloe said, "Well, I know that, and you know that, but Carol, he's by the book. He's not gonna let you off on my word alone, so I really think there's only one thing we can do." Lucifer smirked, "Go home, have sex, fall asleep and never think about him again?" Chloe chuckled, "No, solve this case on our own." Lucifer was confused, "What?"
Suddenly Carol came over, "Your alibi checked out. Yeah, motorcycle cop called and confirmed your story. Yeah. I mean, he's been suspended now, but you're no longer a suspect." Chloe sighed, "Well, that's great." Ella then ran up, "Carol, I just got some really juicy gossip. Well, it's actually a clue. God, isn't it just so interesting how there's always so much insider-y drama, no matter what the industry. Even the toy industry, they have spies." Carol pulled Ella away from Lucifer and Chloe, "Ella, what's the clue." Lucifer's phone pinged and he walked away to look at the message sent to him while Chloe listened in on what Ella was saying, "So, the club books rooms in their hotel for its acts when they come perform. But assistant Erika didn't get booked in her own room. And when victim Jared ordered room service, it was charged on Erika's credit card." Carol realized, "So they're having an affair that she didn't disclose to me." "Maybe time to talk to her again," Ella offered. Carol smirked, "Think so. Thank you." They fist bumped and walked away. Chloe smirked as she took the info in.
Lucifer walked back over, "Apparently, we have a little spy on our side. Carlos has been using his mirror to see what's been going on here and has been trying to solve the mystery on his own for us. So let's let him solve this while we go on our merry way." His phone pinged again and Lucifer read, "Dad, stop it. She wants to help. Let her. She did just overhear something about the assistant. Chloe, trust your gut. I'll figure out some leads for you to follow." He then groaned, "Just great. My own son's against me. I hope you're happy with this!" He shouted that last part to the ceiling as Chloe chuckled.
Over at Linda's house, Maze was looking at Linda's deviled eggs while Eve was admiring the place settings, "Wow. This is just fantastic. I mean, look at this, everything is so elaborate, and it actually got me thinking. This is what I'm going to do." "What?" Maze asked. "Go way too hard on food puns?" Eve chuckled, "No. Dinner parties. Just parties of all kinds. You know, like I did in the Silver City. You could rule Hell, and I could rule the social calendar. I can meet everyone, and I can, you know, just, um, bring in all the happiness and fun and good times. You know." Amenadiel commented, "Hell could definitely use some of that." Maze sighed, "Yeah. Honey, who are you going to bring fun to? The tortured, damned souls?" Eve nodded, "Yeah." Linda noted, "Well, it's not just damned souls, right? It's your siblings too, Maze." Even smirked, "That's right, thank you, Linda. I get to hang out with your family. Amazing!" Maze replied, "Yeah. No. They're walking, talking garbage. I'm keeping you far away from them." Linda and Amenadiel quickly drank their wine as Eve asked, "So, just so I'm clear, what is it that you picture me doing exactly? Just cleaning and cooking for just you? 'Cause that sounds incredibly lonely, Maze." Maze asked, "Are you saying I'm not enough for you?" Eve shook her head, "Not at all. Don't twist my words. You always do this when you're angry." Maze argued, "You're telling me I make you feel lonely! I mean, how twisted is that?"
Amenadiel interrupted, "I'm joining the police force!" Maze was shocked, "What?" Amenadiel nodded, "Yeah. I've been in the police academy for a while now, and it's going well. Dan's parting gift. He put the application in for me." "That's great," Linda said. "But we should get back to Maze…" "Why the hell didn't you tell me?" Maze asked. Amenadiel shrugged, "I guess I just wanted to see how, you know, everything was gonna work out first, and honestly, I thought that you would do nothing but make fun of me." Maze smirked, "Oh, I will. This is the greatest gift you have ever given me. Thank you." "You're welcome," Amenadiel replied. "Congratulations," Eve added. "I'm so happy for you. Go ahead. Tell us all about the academy." Linda sighed as Amenadiel started sharing his stories about the police academy.
Back at the Magic Castle, Chloe was listening in on Carol interviewing Erika and she felt like something wasn't right. Even though Erika was saying that she was mad that Jared abandoned her and with helping her career after Magnar announced his retirement and something Erika said stood out, "Angry sidepiece, tossed away as soon as the dead guy hits it big." Chloe was startled by Lucifer, "What are you doing?" Chloe whispered, "He thinks it's her." Lucifer sighed, "I hope it bloody is so we can finally get on with our date. Plus, Carlos is keeping us posted so you don't have to do this." Chloe shook her head, "No, something isn't adding up. I can feel it in my gut. Which Carlos told me to trust." Lucifer sighed, "Well, maybe your gut hasn't been receiving its emails, but the rest of you is retired. This is Carl's job now." "Carol," Chloe corrected. "His name is Carol. Lucifer, he's got the wrong person. We have to solve this, or an innocent woman might go to jail." Lucifer's phone pinged and Lucifer read, "Dad, she's right. I looked into Erika and she's not the killer. Why don't you two go talk to Ella and see what she found on the body? There might be another clue." Lucifer sighed as Chloe said, "See, even Carlos knows I'm right. Come on."
They found Ella and Chloe asked, "Ella, did we get any physical evidence off the body?" Ella replied, "Oh, actually. I can't really get into that right now. Ugh, Decker, this is killing me, but you're not on the team anymore." "Miss Lopez makes an excellent point," Lucifer commented. "We are here seeking wonder, not truth. Remember? Look, that man just pulled a card out of nowhere. Wondrous." Chloe then asked, "Oh, did you check the victim's clothing for any secret compartments, pockets, anything?" Ella realized, "Right, because it's not just about checking for normal dead guy stuff. It's about checking for magician dead guy stuff. Oh, man, I could totally do a panel on this at the next Forensicon. Brilliant!"
Ella walked over to the victim as Lucifer asked Chloe, "You're really helping with this investigation, aren't you? Even though Carlos is helping in our stead." Chloe shrugged, "Well, it's like you said. I'm a truth seeker." Lucifer sighed, "Chloe, I know you miss being a detective, but we're at a different stage of our lives now." "Well, are we?" Chloe countered. "I mean, you just told me that you've delayed the next stage again. Look, this isn't easy on me either. I'm starting a new job, in Heaven, and the commute daily, alone. And all I'm trying to say is that I just think that there might be some deeper reasons behind these excuses and that maybe we should talk about them. 'Cause you can't put this off forever." Lucifer's phone pinged and Lucifer read, "She's got you there, Dad. I have to agree with her."
Lucifer groaned while Ella ran off, "Bingo! Sort of. I found a bead. Tucked up in a secret pocket, like you said, up in his sleeve. But Magnar's costume doesn't have any beadwork on it, so maybe this is just part of a trick?" Chloe shook her head, "No. It's not magic. It's good police work. I think we may have cracked the case." Chloe walked away while Ella asked, "Uh, care to clue in the actual police person on what that means? No? Cool."
Lucifer then said, "Miss Lopez, a question." Ella replied, "I don't have a thing for Carol at all. I don't think he's cute." "That wasn't the question," Lucifer said. "Oh," Ella replied. Lucifer asked, "When you said you didn't feel God's presence anymore, I mean, is that such a bad thing?" Ella replied, "Uh, yeah, dude. I mean, being ever present is God's whole thing. That's what makes the Big Guy the Big Guy. He's always there." Lucifer said, "Right, but surely he can't be always there. I mean, doesn't God have personal matters to attend to? The odd round of golf or spending time with loved ones?" Ella replied, "That's the best part. He's not like you and me. We are all God's loved ones. And no matter what he's doing, the only thing that God cares about is caring about us." Lucifer retorted, "Not the only thing. He did quite like NCIS." Ella said, "It doesn't matter who you are or what you've done, if you are Mr. Rogers or some sleaze ball Internet troll, he is there for everyone. Or at least, he's supposed to be." Lucifer sighed, "Indeed."
Chloe walked over to Keaton, who was flirting with a woman, "We're already accessorizing alike. What's that on your wrist?" The woman had a bracelet on her wrist like Chloe was given and Chloe said, "Yeah, what is that on her wrist?" She showed the bracelet he gave her and the woman walked away. Chloe then said to Keaton, "We found a bead from one of your bracelet's on Jared's body. Your actual bracelet. Not one of the cheap, plastic handouts." "What are you talking about?" Keaton asked. "Maybe you lost it in the struggle?" Chloe guessed. Keaton retorted, "Whoa, chill out, Nancy Drew. Why would I wanna hurt Jared? I already told you. I didn't wanna be Magnar."
Lucifer then walked over and Chloe asked, "Lucifer, can you please?" Lucifer held up his phone, "I will. Since Carlos texted me saying that this wannabe is lying about something. When in Rome. Tell me, Duran Duran, what is it you truly desire?" Keaton looked into Lucifer's eyes, "I wanna be Magnar. OK, fine, I've always wanted to be Magnar, but the truth is I'm not cut out for the stage. Do you know how many viewing angles you have to cover? Instagram, man, it's way easier. You just set up the camera in the perfect angle, do it as many times as you need, let the likes pour in." Chloe said, "Oh, so, I see. You weren't a good enough magician to be like Magnar." Keaton argued, "Hey, hey, I'm a great magician, on Instagram. You know what? That's OK." "You know what?" Chloe retorted. "You should've thought of that before you killed Jared. Turn around. You're under arrest." "Miss Decker!" Carol shouted. "Can I talk to you for a second?" Chloe sighed and walked off with Carol.
Over at the guest suite, Carlos said to Dude, "I don't think it's Keaton. According to his Instagram account and tracking his phone, he was no where near Jared during the time of the murder." "Maybe it's a set up," Dude offered. "Yeah, I agree," Carlos replied. "But who?" "Don't know," Dude said. "Besides, that Keaton guy just wants to use media entertainment to make it big." Carlos realized something, "Wait a minute. I remember from the interviews that Jared was offered a Netflix deal. But who would set that up?" He typed away and he found his answer, "I know who did this. And the killer is still in that room. I need to get to the Magic Castle. Dude, stay here." Carlos grabbed his phone and the mirror and ran out to the balcony, unfurled his wings, and took off.
Over at Linda's house, Amenadiel was still telling stories, "So Uncle Hanjobadiel, the angel of giving, left us with the gift of a $4000 plumbing bill." He, Maze, and Eve laughed while Linda said, "Well, that's just the kind of thing that happens when you have hundreds of celestial family members. Oh, I'm sorry, Eve. I didn't mean to bring up a sore subject. I know how complicated it is between you and your family, Maze. It's complicated enough when humans meet their partners' families, but when it's celestial, it's so much bigger." Amenadiel was giving her a look to stop talking. Eve said, "It really bothers me that you don't want me spending time with your family, Maze." Linda added, "Maze, it's important to discuss these issues." Amenadiel interrupted, "And it's important to eat this ice cream torture cake before it melts."
Make tore a piece out of the cake, "I don't want to talk about Hell." Linda and Amenadiel looked at each other to try to stop the other, but Maze shouted, "I don't wanna talk about it because I don't wanna go!" Eve was confused, "You don't want to go to Hell?" Maze answered, "Look, I hate to disappoint you. I know how excited you are for me to be queen, but I like it here." Eve chuckled, "I don't wanna go to Hell either. Because, I guess, after the whole demons almost making Carlos their king and the role I played in it almost happening made me turned off by Hell. Even though Carlos forgave me, it still haunts me sometimes. How I acted during that time. So I hid it because I thought going home would make you happy." Maze shook her head, "I don't need to go home to be happy. You're my Hell. I love bounty hunting here. It's so much better when they're still alive, you know. You can really feel the fear." Eve replied, "Fear! I know. That's…I love that part too. And I love what we do after even more." Maze laughed, "Yes! Yeah, I love you. I love our life. I could do this forever." "Forever?" Eve asked. Maze nodded, "Yeah. I could marry you tomorrow." Eve surprised everyone by saying, "OK. Uh, I mean, not tomorrow, but, uh, yeah, hell, yeah." "Did we just get engaged?" Maze asked. Eve nodded and they started to laugh and cry and they hugged each other. Linda and Amenadiel looked at each other and smiled.
Back at the Magic Castle, Carol told Chloe, "Miss Decker, with all due respect, I cannot have you tampering with this investigation." Chloe replied, "And with all due respect, I think I just found your killer for you. He had motive, opportunity…." "And an alibi," Carol interrupted. "He was performing magic for several women during the window of time of the murder, and they all have the bracelets to prove it." Chloe sighed, "Right. Well, I don't think it's Erika. I saw her body language when you interrogated her. She was sad, resigned, but she wasn't angry." Carlo replied, "I agree. And she also has a bracelet. Miss Decker. Chloe. I am in a tough situation here. Now, you and I both know that the killer is still in this room, but I have no clues, and I have no leads, and I cannot hold everyone here on the basis of suspicion alone much longer. While I do not appreciate you running a parallel investigation for the entire evening, I would truly appreciate your thoughts now."
Chloe was shocked, "Oh, of course, um, so if the killer isn't Keaton, the bead had to be planted. The killer had to know how to get the right kind, not the cheap plastic." Carol replied, "So it's premeditated. It's a frame job." "Right," Chloe said. "Which means the killer wanted to remove Magnar's current and former apprentice too, but the question is why." Carol realized, "The Magnar name. It's worth a lot of money. I heard a lot of whispers about a media deal in the works. But when I asked Magnar about it, he said he'd never sell. He said Jared would never sell either." Chloe said, "Wait, so if Magnar won't sell, and neither would Jared, how did this deal get done? I mean, who benefits? Wait, what kind of law did you say the son practices?" Lucifer's phone went off and Lucifer read, "It's all about the media deal. Magnar's son is an entertainment lawyer. It was him."
Suddenly Alan, Magnar's son, grabbed Chloe from behind and held a knife to her neck. Carol tried to get Chloe, but Alan said, "No, back up, buddy." Carol pulled out his gun and everyone else stood up and backed up in shock. Lucifer walked over next to Carol, who said, "OK, everybody. Let's all stay cool." Alan replied, "Oh, cool? You know what's cool? A billion dollar franchise is cool. But no! Magic's not cool. It's art, right, Dad?" Magnar asked, "Is that what this is about? Money?" "It's about your legacy!" Alan shouted as he slowly walked Chloe toward the organ that was in the room. "I was gonna help you bring it into every home in the world, but instead, you cut me out and anointed Jared to honor the traditions and all that BS." "That's what happened with Jared?" Chloe asked as she tried to break free. "He wouldn't play ball with your media deal?" Alan smirked, "Oh, the deal was done. All Jared had to do was sign and cash checks. But not Jared! He's just as stubborn as the last Magnar!" "Wait," Chloe said. "So you sharpened a sword that was supposed to be dull and you framed Keaton 'cause you knew that he'd be next in line? And because of his media savvy, you knew he could make a deal of his own?" Alan nodded as he said to Magnar, "This is all your fault. Every bit of this is your fault. You and your selfishness!" Lucifer laughed, "Selfishness? All you ever cared about was your own greed and desire. You are the one who's selfish. He doesn't care about the consequences and look at what you've done! You are not worthy of your father's legacy!" Lucifer's phone pinged but Lucifer ignored it. "Think about it, Alan," Carol said. "Just drop the knife. You know there's no way out of here." Alan replied, "That's where you're wrong. I may not be a magician, but I grew up here."
He pulled a lever next to the organ and a door opened and he quickly pulled Chloe threw with him and closed it before anyone else could follow. "No!" Lucifer shouted as he ran over and tried to open the door. "Fine me something to pry this open with!" Carol shouted. Ella replied, "Oh! That door! Now! Hurry!" Ella and Carol heard something breaking and turned to see the door busted open and Lucifer gone.
A little while earlier, Carlos had arrived at the Magic Castle. He quickly texted his dad about who the killer was and then used his mirror to see what was going on. He saw Alan holding Chloe at knifepoint. He also saw Alan slowly backing up toward the organ. Carlos said to the mirror, "Mirror, mirror, show me all the secret passages." The mirror showed them to him and Carlos deduced that Alan was going to take Chloe in one. He sent his dad a message warning him then used the mirror to find his way into the one Alan was going to use.
Carlos then found himself in the secret tunnels and heard Chloe struggling with Alan. He looked around a corner to see Alan dragging Chloe while she was trying to get something out of her purse. Carlos' eyes glowed red as Alan tried to shush her and almost cut her throat open with the knife. He then shouted, "Freeze!" Alan and Chloe froze and Carlos revealed himself. Alan shouted, "Where did you come from? Who are you?" Carlos smirked, "Magic. Now, you are going to drop that knife now." Alan found himself obeying and dropped the knife. Alan then said, "You are not going to get in my way. I have a media deal that will not get ruined." Carlos chuckled, "Greed. I guess my dad was right about that." "Your dad?" Alan asked. Carlos smirked, "Yes, the man whose true love you have hostage right now. So let her go." Alan obeyed and Chloe took some deep breaths. Carlos pulled out his ring and put it on his finger, "My father does have an curious interest when it comes to magic of this world. Just like your father. Whereas you, you just care about the money that can come with it. But me, I use my own kind of magic." His ring then glowed and the tunnel around them changed as the illusion magic created a replica of the stage where Alan and Chloe just were. Alan panicked, "What is this?" Carlos smirked, "Magic. My magic. It's just an illusion, like your magic, but way more real." Carlos then saw Chloe pulling out Amenadiel's necklace from her purse and nodded to her. She nodded back. Carlos then had the illusion create Magnar, Erika, Keaton, and even Jared and they started to taunt Alan who started to panic, "What are you?" Carlos chuckled, "I'm De Vil, and like I said, my father is someone who shouldn't have messed with."
Alan was then knocked on the head by Chloe, who was holding Amenadiel's ring, and Alan fell to the ground unconscious. Carlos then dropped the illusion and walked over to her, "Chloe, are you OK?" Chloe nodded, "Yeah. So you figured it out?" Carlos nodded, "Yeah. Also I found these passages and followed where Alan was taking you."
They heard Lucifer shout, "Chloe! Bastard! If you harm one hair on her head, I swear I will break every…." Lucifer turned the corner and saw Chloe and Carlos standing there with Alan knocked out could. "What?" Lucifer asked. He saw the necklace in Chloe's hand, "Amenadiel's necklace. You kept it." Chloe shrugged, "It helped me survive an angel-demon-magical creature war, so I thought it might come in handy again. Plus, I can't take al the credit. Carlos tracked us here and distracted Alan while I got out the necklace." Lucifer turned to Carlos, "Carlos, thank you. But how…." Carlos smirked, "Magic." "Plus," Chloe said. "I needed a confession so I waited until I heard it. Carlos just helped distract the guy so I could get the necklace." They heard Carol and Ella walk up behind Lucifer and Carlos quickly used the ring to illusion his hair and Ella asked, "Carlos, what are you doing here? How?" Carlos again said, "Magic." Carol said, "Oh, you're Lucifer's son. Nice to see you again." Ella dragged Carol away as Lucifer said to Chloe, "Once the detective, always the detective."
Lucifer took Chloe and Carlos back to Lux. Carlos went up to the guest suite for the night as Lucifer and Chloe went up to the penthouse. They were lounging on the couch with whiskey glasses as Lucifer said, "To being right." "Because I, and Carlos, solved the case?" Chloe asked. Lucifer replied, "No, because I was right about the secret passageways." They clinked glasses and took sips of the whiskey as Lucifer continued, "Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I put that in my safe with Azrael's blade." Chloe nodded, "Yeah. You did. I shouldn't have taken it." "Why did you?" Lucifer asked. Chloe sighed, "It's kind of hard to explain. After so many years of being a cop and walking around every day armed, I just felt weirdly naked without a way to defend myself. But you're right. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have taken it without asking you. You can have that back." Lucifer sighed, "Well, as much as I enjoy the mental image of you walking around weirdly naked, you should keep it. Especially since we'll be here on Earth a little longer." "Does Carlos know?" Chloe asked. Lucifer shook his head, "No, but I'll tell him in the morning. He deserves some rest after helping us."
Chloe then said, "Lucifer, I heard what you said to Magnar's son. And you have to understand you are not the same as him. You are worthy of your father's legacy." Lucifer sighed, "This isn't so much an issue of worth. It's more an issue of job description. God needs to be selfless. He needs to care about all of humanity." Chloe argued, "You died for me. You went back to Hell for a while to protect your nephew, and most importantly, your son. What could be more selfless than that?" Lucifer replied, "Well, you see, that's just it. I love you, Chloe Decker. And I love my son. I'd do anything for the two of you. Except give the both of you up." "What do you mean?" Chloe asked. Lucifer sighed, "Well, much as I claim to know what will happen to me when I become God, I don't. I'm scared. I'm scarred of what it'll mean for us. For me and my son." Chloe said, "Well, I'm not scared. I love you too, Lucifer Morningstar. And I know Carlos loves you too as his father. And I have faith that you'll figure this out." "You do?" Lucifer asked. Chloe nodded as they leaned in to kiss and Chloe rested her head on Lucifer's shoulder. Lucifer looked on, still worrying.
Carlos saw this exchange in the guest suite through his mirror. He looked over at Dude, who was asleep. Carlos whispered, "Dad, I know that you're scared. But I agree with Chloe. You'll figure this out. I'll help you. But you are in trouble for not telling me about the delay." He chuckled and put the mirror down and went to sleep.
Over at Linda's house, Amenadiel and Linda were cleaning up and Amenadiel asked, "So are we gonna talk about it?" "Yeah, I know," Linda replied. "The hellfire queso was a disaster. I think everyone was trying to be so polite about it, but I saw Maze dump hers in the spider plant. Wait, we're not talking about the queso." Amenadiel shook his head, "No. I mean how you spent the entire night probing and prodding at Maze and Eve's relationship issues." Linda argued, "I was just encouraging them to work through some unresolved issues." "And why were you doing that?" Amenadiel asked. "Because I'm a good friend," Linda replied. "And an even better therapist. I mean, you saw. From almost token up to engaged over a single dinner. I mean, I should put that on my website." Amenadiel sighed, "Linda, you are a great therapist, and you did help them. You did. But you see, I wonder if some of that was maybe for your own benefit as well?" Linda replied, "Well, maybe, you're not so bbad a therapist yourself. OK. I admit it, but after God himself has been on my couch, it's very difficult to go back to normal problems. It's like, "OK, I'm sorry, you slept with your yoga teacher, again." But I help[ed save the universe."
Amenadiel deduced, "So you thought you would get a rush from some celestial therapy one last time before they head south? Linda. Yeah, listen, uh, nobody understands better than me how earthly things can feel small. I mean, I was a warrior angel, fighting for the Silver City, and now, I'm in training to be a beat cop. OK? But you wanna know what I've learned? No problem is too small. Whatever good deed you do in the world, whether it's helping someone on your block, or, I don't know, throwing some elaborate dinner party for your friends, you are just as much of a hero as you are fighting a war for the throne of Heaven. Every act matters." Linda sighed, "That's very insightful. But I don't know if I'm there yet. Or if I ever will be."
Lucifer meanwhile was looking down at Chloe sleeping in his bed. He also had a photo of Dan in his hands. Sighing, he put the photo down and unfurled his wings. He flew down to the balcony of the guest suite and saw Carlos sleeping peacefully with Dude sleeping at the foot of the bed. He took off again and flew down to Hell.
In Hell, in one of the rooms, Dan was playing ping pong with a demon wearing a police uniform. Dan hit a hard one and the demon said, "Out!" Dan scoffed, "Are you kidding? That was totally in!" They started to argue when they heard Lucifer say, "What's the score?" Dan looked over and saw Lucifer on the steps, as the room was made to look like LAPD. Dan walked over, "Hey, there you are, buddy, what's up? What's the plan this time?" Lucifer sighed, "I'm sorry, Daniel. I can't think of anything new. I've just come to check in." "Check in?" Dan asked. "On what? Nothing's changed. I'm still in Hell. It still sucks. Belios still sucks. Ping pong is not his game, dude. Belios argued, "Hey, I'm getting better." Dan sighed, "Bro, it's been thousands of years here, and you still can't keep a volley going." Lucifer said, "Daniel, I have commanded the demons to not torture you. You are the first soul ever in this purgatory. I've invented an entirely new afterlife for you, so I apologize if Belios' serve isn't up to snuff." Belios argued, "It's more my backhand that's weak."
Lucifer mimed to Belios to shut up and said to Dan, "Look. I'm sorry. I know you're the one stuck here." Dan sighed, "You know, I've tried every door. Hell, I even tried the one that guy Lee walks through." Lucifer explained, "Well, Lee's door was a metaphor for his own guilt." Dan argued, "I know it was a metaphor, Lucifer. And I know that we're all tortured by our own guilt down here. But you know as well as I do that I've dealt with all my guilt. So why am I still here? Why was that guy able to make it into Heaven and literally no one else? Why not me?" Lucifer sighed, "I don't know." Dan replied, "Well, it seems pretty simple to me. Just stop screwing around and go be God. Then you can just, like, beam me up." Lucifer sighed, "Daniel, we have been through this. If I act against your wishes, no matter how unconscious those are, then that is the end of free will, which I cannot do. And no, my son can't do it either. He will not use his persuasion to command me or you." Dan replied, "You know what, man? Every time you come here, you give me hope. And every time, you disappoint me. You let me down. You know what that is? That's torture. Now, don't come back here unless you actually have the answer." Lucifer sighed, "As you wish." He unfurled his wings and disappeared.
Dan stood up and was about to start his ping pong game with Belios, but then thunder was heard and lighting formed in the sky. "Did you see that?" Dan asked. "That's never happened before. You think it means something?" "I doubt it," Belios answered.
But outside of the room, up on Lucifer's throne, there was a mysterious woman sitting on the throne, looking out over Hell with a smile on her face.
