Chapter 2 What's Happening?:
Marcy groaned as she opened her eyes. When she was met with a bright light, she immediately closed them. Once her eyes adjusted, Marcy moved her head to look around. Why was she in a hospital room?
"Marcy?" a voice asked.
Marcy turned to see Mark sitting in a chair beside her bed.
"Mark?" she asked.
She grunted as he suddenly hugged her.
"Idiot, we thought you were going to die," he mumbled.
Confused, Marcy hugged her older brother back.
"Um…if asking this won't get me smacked upside the head. What happened?" she asked.
Mark pulled back from the hug.
"You passed out during the tour," Mark said.
Marcy blinked.
"I did?" she asked.
Mark nodded.
"Yeah, Anne called the hospital and they called Ma and Mom," he said.
Marcy rubbed her head. This was too much information for her to process. The two siblings looked up when the door flew open.
"Marcy!" Olivia cried.
Marcy squeaked as her mother hugged her tightly, cutting off her oxygen supply.
"Mom,Mom! Can't breathe!" she said.
Olivia broke the hug as Marcy regained her breath. Yunnan ruffled her hair as a doctor walked into the room.
"Nice to see you're awake Ms. Wu. How are you feeling?" he asked.
"Tired but better," Marcy answered.
The doctor nodded and walked out of the room. Marcy yawned.
"The doctor said you're okay to go home today," Yunnan said.
Marcy was relieved that she didn't have to spend the whole night in the hospital. After a few check ups, Marcy was discharged from the hospital. The black haired girl plopped down on her bed. She should call Anne and Sasha but that can wait until morning. Marcy buried her face into her arms and fell asleep.
The Next Day:
Marcy yawned as she walked down the steps. She saw Mark sitting at the table eating cereal.
"Where's Ma and Mom?" she asked
"Ma was called to a meeting at the police station and Mom is still asleep," he answered around a mouthful of cereal.
Marcy nodded and grabbed her school bag.
"Tell Mom I'm walking to school," she said.
Mark gave her a thumbs up and Marcy headed out the door. She popped her ear buds in and listened to her favorite song as she walked towards the school. Marcy was putting her locker combination in when a pair of arms suddenly wrapped around her shoulders. The girl jumped and turned around to see Anne.
"Anne, jeez. You almost gave me a heart attack," she said.
Anne mumbled an apology as Sasha walked towards them.
"Well, don't go passing out like that. We thought you were dead," Sasha said.
"Mark said the same thing," Marcy mumbled.
As Marcy was putting her stuff up, Anne noticed something.
"Hey Marce,Sash, can you two stand back to back?" she asked.
Marcy and Sasha looked at her confused but complied. Using her hand, Anne measured the two girls.
"Marcy, did you grow overnight?" Anne asked.
Marcy blinked.
"I don't think so? Why'd you ask?" Marcy asked.
"Because you're around the same height as Sasha," she said.
Sasha pushed Marcy's hair back and saw that she and Marcy were indeed the same height.
"Yep. She's just a centimeter shorter," Sasha said.
Marcy was still processing this. Ever since second grade, Marcy has always been the shortest her and Anne being the same height with Anne being two inches taller but now Marcy has grown 4 more inches going from 5'1 to 5'5 which is three inches over Anne.
"How does one grow overnight?" Anne asked.
"Growth spurt?" Sasha said, shrugging.
Marcy was about to say something when the bell rang.
"We can discuss this later. Let's head to gym class," Sasha said.
Marcy groaned. Anne patted her shoulder. She knew gym wasn't Marcy's best subject. They walked to gym class.
"Alright listen up. Since it's raining outside, we'll have to stay inside. Therefore we're staying inside to play dodgeball," the coach said.
Marcy along with a few other kids groaned as they split up into teams. The coach blew the whistle. Marcy felt her heart jump when a ball swerved past her, hitting a kid in his stomach. Another was thrown at Marcy but Sasha managed to catch it and launched it back at the other team.
"Thanks Sash," Marcy said.
Sasha gave her a smile and a thumbs up. Marcy spent most of the game avoiding getting hit as Anne and Sasha helped her. A few minutes into the game, Marcy found herself the only one left. She gulped as a redheaded girl Marcy knew as Maggie stepped up and threw a ball at her. Suddenly, everything was moving in slow motion for Marcy.
'What in the world?' She thought to herself.
She stepped to the side and time sped up as the ball hit the wall. Everyone's jaws dropped while Marcy stood there in shock. How did she do that? A buzz filled her ears and Marcy jumped into the air and back flipped over two dodgeballs. Marcy blinked. Maggie growled and threw another ball at her. Marcy caught the ball with one hand.
"Marcy, throw it!" Sasha shouted.
Marcy threw the ball. The ball flew towards the other team and it bounced between four of them, knocking them to the ground. Marcy stood there looking at her hands as her team cheered. What the actual hell is going on?
Timeskip to lunch:
Marcy sat down at a table with Sasha.
"What was that?" Sasha asked.
"I have no idea. My reflexes were never this good," Marcy said, taking a bite of her lunch.
Anne was walking towards them when she slipped over something. The Thai girl closed her eyes and waited for her back to hit the floor. It never came. Anne opened her eyes and saw light brown eyes looking at her. Marcy had caught her.
"You okay?" she asked.
Anne blushed a bit.
"Y-yeah, thanks," she said.
Marcy helped her to her feet and sat back down. Sasha gave Anne a teasing look. Anne gave her a look that said "Not one word". Marcy was eating her lunch when she noticed her spork sticking to her wrist. Marcy pulled the spork and saw a web-like substance coming from her wrist. Marcy pulled the spork off her wrist and it shot a web across the cafeteria sticking to a tray. Marcy looked at Sasha and Anne who weren't paying attention. The black haired girl pulled her wrist back. The tray flew towards her. Reacting quickly, Marcy ducked and the tray flew over her head and onto Maggie who was sitting behind her. Everyone in the cafeteria laughed as Maggie tried to get the mac and cheese out of her hair. Marcy stood up and walked away. Everyone saw the tray dragging behind the black haired girl as she walked out of the cafe. Maggie gritted her teeth and followed after her. Anne and Sasha exchanged looks and ran after Marcy. Marcy walked to her locker looking at her hand. How did she just shoot a web? She stopped at her locker and fumbled to get it unlocked. A buzzing sound was heard again and Marcy moved to the left to avoid getting punched. Marcy stepped back as Maggie turned to her.
"You think you're funny Wu?" she asked.
Anne, Sasha and Mark pushed through the crowd.
"Maggie it was an accident," Anne said.
Marcy put her hands up.
"I don't want to fight you,Maggie," she said.
Maggie put her fists up.
"I wouldn't want to fight me either," she said
She swung at Marcy who dodged it with ease.
'How did I?' she thought to herself.
Maggie growled and swung another punch at her. Marcy moved to the right and Maggie stumbled. Marcy stood there. One of Maggie's goons ran at her. Marcy jumped up and front flipped over her. Everyone gasped.
"All yours dude," the girl said.
Maggie huffed and swung at Marcy again and again. Marcy dodged every single one.
"Mark, help her," Anne said.
Mark looked at Marcy who looked like she wasn't having any problems unlike Maggie.
"Which one?" he asked.
Marcy caught Maggie's fist in her hand. Maggie looked at her in surprise. Marcy pushed her away, sending Maggie into some lockers. Everyone ran towards the redheaded girl. Marcy looked at her hands.
"Marcy?" asked a voice.
Marcy looked at her friends and brother. She stepped back before running off.
"Marcy!" Mark shouted.
Marcy didn't listen as she ran out the front doors. She ran down the street.
'How is this happening? Why is this happening? What is goin-?' Her thoughts are interrupted as Marcy runs into a car.
Marcy flew through the air and landed on her feet. Passersby clapped. Marcy ran off and into an alleyway. She stopped to catch her breath as she leaned against the wall. Marcy looked at her hands and felt sick to her stomach when she saw tiny micro-hairs appearing on her fingers. Out of the corner of her eye, Marcy saw a spider building a web. Marcy looked at her hands before turning to the wall behind her. She placed one hand on the wall and pushed herself up. She placed her other hand on the wall and soon Marcy found herself climbing up the wall. She looked down at the ground and grinned.
Minutes later:
Marcy laughed as she jumped over a gap between two buildings and landed on the other one. She jumped over an air conditioner and backflipped off a vent. Marcy stopped at the edge of the building. She looked at her wrist and at a telephone wire. She aimed at it and shot a web. The web grabbed onto the wire. Marcy took a step back. She sucked in a breath and jumped off the building. Marcy let out a shriek as she swung through the air. She laughed as she looked down at the city below her. She shot another web and cheered as she swung over another building. Marcy laughed until…
*BAM!*
Marcy grunted as she hit a brick wall. She slid down the wall and landed into a dumpster. Marcy climbed out of the dumpster. She wiped her clothes off and walked out of the alley.
'This is cool and all…but how can something like that happen? Maybe I should go see Terri, she'll probably have a say about this' Marcy thought to herself.
She walked towards her neighborhood. After passing by a few houses, she arrived at a house a few blocks down from hers. Marcy knocked on the door. It didn't take long for the door to open revealing a girl two years older than her. She had caucasian skin, short blue hair, green eyes and freckles.
"Marcy?" she asked.
Marcy smiled.
"Hey, Terri. How's it going?" she asked.
Terri was one of the friends Marcy,Anne and Sasha knew back in middle school but she graduated when the three girls were in 6th grade.
"Not much. What's going on with you? Besides you know, getting into a fight with Maggie," Terri said.
Marcy scratched her head as she laughed nervously.
"You…know about that?" she asked.
Terri nodded and stepped aside to let Marcy in.
"So, your Dad isn't home?" she asked.
Terri shook her head as she led her to her room. Once inside, Terri sat down in a chair.
"Nope…So what brings you here?" she asked.
Marcy took a breath.
"Okay, so I went on this trip to Andrias Industries. I was bit by a spider and passed out during the tour. Today I was feeling better but strange things were happening. I'm more agile than ever, I'm quicker and I can climb walls and shoot webs," Marcy said.
Terrie put a hand up.
"Hold on…climb walls? Marcy, what are you on about?" she asked.
Marcy blinked before climbing up the wall. Terri watched in shock as Marcy managed to climb on the ceiling as she sat upside down.
"What-How?" she asked.
Marcy shrugged.
"I don't know," she said.
Terri ran a hand through her hair.
"Okay, this might have something to do with the spider. Get down so I can run some tests," she said.
"Uh, I kind of…can't," Marcy said.
Terri blinked.
"What do you mean, you can't?" she asked.
Marcy motioned to her hands sticking to the ceiling.
"Just try relaxing your fingers," she said.
Marcy took a breath and felt her fingers loosen up.
'Yes! Oh…wait' she thought to herself.
Marcy yelped as she fell to the floor. Terri snorted.
"Agile huh?" she said.
Marcy gave her a pout and stood up.
"So, what kind of tests are we running?" she asked.
To answer her question, Terri pulled about three strands of her hair out. She placed them under a microscope. Terri looked at it.
"Huh. Whatever that spider bite did, it really rearranged your molecules," Terri said.
Marcy nodded.
"What did the spider that bit you look like?" Terri asked.
"It was black with green stripes. It was a new genetically modified species," Marcy said.
Terri nodded.
"From what I know my abilities are enhanced speed, strength, web shooting, agility and wall climbing," Marcy said.
Terri nodded.
"We should find out what other abilities you might have," she said.
Marcy scratched her head.
"We should probably go tomorrow since it's Saturday," Marcy suggested.
Terri nodded and Marcy walked out of her house. When she got home, Marcy saw that the lights were out.
'Can't go through the front door unless I want to get smacked upside the head by Mom for being late coming home' Marcy thought to herself.
She decided to climb through her bedroom window. Marcy grunted as she fell into her room. After changing into her pajamas, Marcy laid down on her bed. How is she going to explain this to Anne and Sasha? Marcy sighed before turning over and falling asleep.
