Chapter 3 A new Hero:
Marcy was sleeping peacefully in bed when she felt someone shaking her shoulder. Her brown eyes fluttered open and she saw her brother standing over her. Marcy screamed and fell out of bed. She rubbed her head.
"What happened?" Mark asked.
Marcy glared up at him.
"I fell out of my fucking bed. What do you think happened?" Marcy asked.
Mark rolled his eyes and helped his sister to her feet.
"I'm talking about yesterday…what was that?" he asked.
Marcy shrugged.
"I don't know. Maggie was just being her jerky self," she said.
Marcy walked towards her closet and pulled out a green vest,a black hoodie and a pair of black sweatpants with green stripes running down the sides. Mark turned around so she could change.
"Where are you going on a Saturday morning?" he asked.
"I don't see why that concerns you," Marcy responded.
"As the big brother, I need to look after my kid sister," Mark said.
Marcy rolled her eyes.
"I'm hanging out with Terri," she said.
Mark raised an eyebrow.
"Like Terri from secondary school?" he asked.
Marcy looked at her brother as she grabbed a scarf and wrapped it around her neck.
"Yes?" she said.
Mark nodded.
"Cool. you have fun," he said.
Marcy nodded and walked out her room. She closed the door and rode her bike to the junkyard. Marcy saw Terri standing at the front entrance.
"You ready?" she asked.
Marcy nodded and they walked inside. Marcy gagged and plugged her nose.
"Ugh! This place smells like the school bathrooms during taco Tuesday," Marcy said.
Terri shrugged.
"It doesn't smell that bad," Terri said.
"Then you're nose blind," Marcy mumbled.
Terri rolled her eyes and pulled out some wristbands. They were black with green designs on the back. She handed them to Marcy who looked at them curiously
"What are those?" Marcy asked.
"Web shooters. It has an unlimited amount of webs available so you'll never run out," Terri answered.
Marcy nodded and strapped them on her wrists.
"They're a bit big," she said.
Terri shrugged.
"They'll fit eventually," she said.
Marcy shrugged and they kept walking.
"Let's see what they can do," Terri said.
Marcy nodded and aimed at the top of a crane. She shot a web and swung herself around the crane and landed on top of it.
"They work!" Marcy called down to Terri.
Terri nodded and wrote down in a notebook. Marcy was in the process of getting down when her foot slipped. Marcy screamed as she fell. Terri gasped.
"Marcy!" she shouted.
Marcy landed on the ground. She stood up and checked herself.
"I'm alive," she murmured.
"Marcy, where'd you go?" Terri asked.
Marcy blinked.
"What are you talking about? I'm right beside you," she said.
Terri looked to her left and reached out to poke Marcy. Marcy yelped when she felt Terri poke her in the eye.
"Ow! Dude, that was my eye!" she said, holding her eye.
Terri watched in amazement as Marcy reappeared in front of her. Marcy looked at her hands.
"Was I just invisible?" she asked.
"It's like some kind of fight or flight ability," Terri said.
"Cool," Marcy said.
A buzz sound was heard and Marcy turned towards it. Terri blinked.
"Marcy? Hello…Earth to Marcy," she said, waving a hand in front of her friend's face.
Marcy shook her head.
"Something's wrong on the other side of town," Marcy said.
Terri nodded and they rode their bikes to the other side of town. They saw a huge group of people crowded around a burning building.
"Please!" a woman shrieked.
Marcy turned and saw a woman crying to a fireman.
"You have to go back inside and help my son. His name is Henry and he got stuck on the fifth floor. Please save him!" she cried.
Marcy clenched her fists and pulled her hood over her head.
"What are you doing?" Terri asked, watching Marcy take a few steps back.
"I'm going after the kid," she said.
Terri opened her mouth to tell her it's too dangerous but Marcy was already gone.
'Anne and Sasha are going to kill me' Terri thought to herself.
Inside the building:
Marcy was walking through the building as she used her scarf to keep herself from inhaling the smoke. She grabbed a flashlight.
"Hey! Is there a kid named Henry here?" she asked.
"Help!" Marcy heard a weak voice shout.
"I'm coming, kid! Just keep yelling so I can find you," Marcy said.
She ran through the burning building.
"Marco!" she yelled.
"Polo" a small voice answered.
Marcy looked through some rooms.
"Marco," she called.
"Polo. Hey, I can see your flashlight," she heard.
Marcy walked into a room.
"Kid?" she asked.
A small boy around the age of 4 crawled out from the shadows.
"Who are you?" he asked.
Marcy bent down to his level.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you. I'm getting you out of here and taking you to your mom," she said.
Marcy lifted the small boy into her arms. The building began to crumble, making the small boy tighten his grip around Marcy's neck. Marcy patted his back as she made her way through the building. Marcy saw an opened window. She climbed onto the window seal and looked down.
'That's a long fall' she thought to herself.
She aimed at a lamppost and fired a web. It wrapped around a lamppost.
"Kid, whatever you do, hang on tight," she said.
Marcy took a step back and jumped off the window. She landed on the ground as people gathered around them.
"Mommy!" Henry cheered as his mother came towards them.
Marcy handed him to his mother who hugged Henry tightly. The mother turned to her with a grateful smile.
"Thank you," she said.
Marcy nodded. She grunted as a news reporter clapped her on the shoulder.
"I am here with the hero who saved this little boy," he said.
Marcy made sure to keep her scarf over her face as the camera aimed itself at her.
"What is your name?" one news reporter asked.
Marcy looked at Terri.
"Don't use your real name!" she mouthed.
Marcy looked at the camera.
"My name is…Calamity Spider?" she said, uncertainly.
She snapped her fingers.
"Yeah, my name's Calamity Spider. And speaking of which,I should get out of here," she said.
She shot a web and took off. Once she was far from the crowd, Marcy landed on top of a roof. She pulled her scarf down and took a breath. Marcy sensed someone behind her and saw Terri climbing on the roof. The older girl walked over towards her.
"What were you thinking?! You and that kid could've seriously gotten hurt!" she scolded.
Marcy covered her ears as Terri shouted at her.
"What was I supposed to do?! Leave the kid to die?" she asked.
Terri shook her head.
"I know your heart is in the right place but you have to be more careful. Especially when using your powers," Terri said.
Marcy nodded and stood up.
"I'm going to head home. See ya at school," she said.
Terri nodded and Marcy jumped off the building and headed home. The blue haired girl climbed down from the roof and headed to her home. Marcy sighed as she walked into her home. She saw Olivia in the kitchen cooking dinner. Marcy walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table with Yunnan.
"Long Day?" the blond woman asked her daughter.
"Tiring," she answered.
Marcy ran a hand through her hair.
"How…do you help the city even when you're tired of it, Ma?" Marcy asked.
Yunnan looked at her and sighed.
"Being in the police force isn't easy kiddo. I do one hard mission and the next one is harder than the first," Yunnan said.
"And you don't think about giving up?" Marcy asked.
Yunnan shook her head.
"Why?" Marcy asked.
Olivia placed four plates on the table.
"It's because this family doesn't back down from a fight," she answered.
Marcy nodded.
"So…say I have an ability that can help me with a situation, what do I do with it?" Marcy asked.
"You use it to help others. You never know what you can or can't do, only that you know it's safe for others around you including yourself" Yunnan said.
Olivia hummed.
"Markus! Dinner's ready!" she shouted.
Marcy could hear a thumping noise from upstairs before seeing her brother come into the kitchen looking disheveled.
"What was the thumping noise?" she asked as Mark sat down.
"Bookshelf fell over and almost crushed me," her brother mumbled.
Marcy gave him an unconvinced look before eating.
"What were you guys talking about before I came downstairs?" he asked.
"Marcy asked me how do I keep on moving even when I'm tired," Yunnan answered.
Mark looked at his sister out of the corner of his eye. He shrugged and started eating.
After Dinner:
Marcy laid down on her bed with her arms crossed behind her head. Her mind went back to when she saved the little boy. If it wasn't for her, that mother could've lost her kid. Her fingers drummed lightly against the back of her head as she thought about what her mothers said.
'Use my powers for good… I can help with the crime going on around the city' she thought to herself.
She'll have to see if Terri would agree to help her.
