Chapter 9 Curiosity killed the Spider:
(A/N: This is a few weeks in to Marcy being the Calamity Spider)
Marcy huffed as she sat down on a building.
'19 robberies in one day?! Don't these goons have a life?!' Marcy thought to herself.
She pressed the button on her earpiece.
"Yo Terri, please tell me there's no more crimes," Marcy said.
No response.
"Terri?" Marcy asked.
She could hear snoring on the other side. Marcy's eyebrow twitched.
"TERRI!" Marcy shouted.
The sound of a scream and someone falling out of a chair could be heard before Terri's voice was heard.
"Did you have to scream in my ear?" Terri asked.
Marcy rolled her eyes.
"Next time don't fall asleep when I'm in the field. Are there any more robberies?" she asked.
"I don't see anything on the scanners. We're all good for now," Terri said.
Marcy sighed in relief.
"That's a relief," she said.
She turned her earpiece off and jumped off the building into an alleyway. Marcy stuffed her suit in her bag and grabbed her bike. She walked out of the alleyway and was about to get on her bike when she saw Mark standing across the street, leaning against the wall as he looked at his phone. Marcy smiled and was about to call out to him when a black limo pulled up in front of him. Mark pocketed his phone and climbed inside the limo. Marcy blinked as the limo drove down the road. Why was her brother getting into cars with strangers? Deciding that she should find out, Marcy mounted her bike and rode after them. She rode down the road, making sure Mark or whoever's driving sees her. Marcy stopped around a corner and saw the limo park in front of Andrias Industries. Mark climbed out and walked into the building. The door closed. Marcy leaned her bike on the side of the building before pulling her hood up and climbing up the steps. She pulled on the door only to find it locked.
'Crud! Now how am I going to get in' she thought to herself.
Marcy looked around and noticed an open window
'Bingo!'
Marcy climbed into the window and walked through the corridors. After a few minutes of walking Marcy began to hear someone talking. She looked into a small room and saw Andrias, the Red Assassin and some other goons.
"What do you mean you lost it?" Andrias asked.
"I can explain sir, you see, the spider wasn't in the tank. I think one of the students must've stolen during the tour a few weeks ago," one of the goons said.
'Spider? Are they talking about the one that bit me?' Marcy thought to herself.
"How are you going to blame a group of 14 to 17 year olds for a genetically modified spider that you were supposed to keep an eye on to go missing?" Red asked.
The smaller one opened his mouth to say something but couldn't think of anything to say.
"I think you know what happens if things go wrong," Andrias said bluntly.
Red unsheathed his blade. The goon paled.
"No Wait! Please! I can do better!" he begged.
Red ignored him and raised the blade. Marcy watched in horror as the blade went into the goon's stomach. The goon let out a silent scream as blood dripped down his chin. Red pulled his blade out and the man fell to the ground, limp. Marcy stepped back accidentally knocking down a flower pot.
"Someone's here," Red said.
"Take care of it,"she heard Andrias say.
Marcy quickly ran towards the window. A loud bang was heard and she looked up to see Red come out of the room. He looked at her. Marcy yelped and jumped out the window. She took off down the road. She looked over her shoulder and saw Red coming after her on his motorcycle. Marcy ran faster as she tried to lose him in the crowd. She pushed through a crowd of people as she ran out into the street. Marcy turned and saw Red gaining on her. A honking noise was heard, causing Marcy's senses to flare up. A truck and a few cars crashed into each other. Reacting quickly, Marcy back flipped over the two vehicles. She landed on her feet. Marcy looked back and saw no sign of Red. Not wanting to stay around much longer, Marcy ran off. On top of a building, Red watched as she ran home before heading back. Marcy panted as she ran home. She opened the window and climbed inside her room, knocking a few things over as she fell to the ground. Marcy closed the window and tried to calm her racing heart. Hurried footsteps could be heard before her room door was kicked open. Yunnan rushed inside, taser out.
"Police, put your hands up!" she shouted.
Marcy jumped and looked at her. Seeing the fear in her youngest child's eyes, Yunnan softened her face and placed her taser down.
"Marcy?" she asked.
She grunted as Marcy hugged her tightly around the torso. Yunnan blinked and hugged her back.
"Hey,Hey. It's okay," Yunnan said softly.
Olivia walked in. She frowned when she saw that her daughter looked upset. She placed a hand on Marcy's shoulder. Marcy stepped out of Yunnan's embrace and looked at her mothers.
"What's the matter Marcy?" Olivia asked.
Marcy looked at the ground.
"Hey, if you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to," Yunnan said.
Marcy nodded and laid down on her bed. Olivia gave her daughter a kiss on the forehead before walking out. Yunnan was about to follow her when Marcy stopped her.
"Ma? When you were on those patrols, did you ever get scared? Like you're never going to make it home?" Marcy asked.
Yunnan huffed and sat down at the foot of the bed. Marcy watched as her mother ruffled her hair with her hand.
"Yes. It was my first day on the job and I was called to take out a serial killer with my team. What we didn't know was that there was an ambush waiting for us. Everyone else was calm but me? Heh, I was scared as hell. Especially when the bastard had me at gunpoint. I was shaking and my thoughts were like: "Am I going to make it?", but I ignored those thoughts and fought back. Now,I'm not as scared anymore," Yunnan said.
Marcy looked at her.
"How'd you get over it?" she asked.
Yunnan smiled.
"I replaced that thought with a new one. Instead of "I'm not going to make it" it was "I will make it". Because I got a wife and two kids who were waiting for me to come home and I can't leave them waiting," she said.
Marcy gave her a smile.
"I also remembered that our family doesn't run from things," Yunnan said.
Marcy nodded.
"I think I get it now," she said.
Yunnan ruffled her hair.
"Good. Now get some sleep," she said.
She walked out of the room leaving Marcy in her room. Marcy looked at the ceiling. She closed her eyes and fell asleep.
