When she kisses him at the altar, she feels nothing. No spark. No desire. Nothing. It's like kissing a wall.
And she is perfectly fine with that.
Rodolphus is less her husband, more her comrade. More of an ally than anything. She'd just married him to put on a show. He'd married her to make his parents — and hers — happy. It is a loveless marriage. They do not exchange any sort of affection, sleeping in the same bed but never touching.
And she is perfectly fine with that.
Being married to Rodolphus — rather than restricting her, it's freeing. She's allowed to pursue her ambitions without a deadweight holding on to her skirts. Rodolphus indulges her passions, rather than stifling them. Rather than stopping her.
Sometimes, he joins her. When red light fills the room, when the Longbottoms' screams echo throughout the room, when they thrash on the floor and fill her with delighted satisfaction, she laughs. Uncontrolled, unrestrained, like the untamed ocean. Like a beast who has been trapped for too long.
He laughs with her.
And she is perfectly fine with that.
He stands off to one side as she builds her empire of blood. Quiet, blending into the shadows, he watches, emotionless as the Mudblood writhes at her hands. She is at her height. She is at her happiest.
And then, he watches her fall from grace. Felled by a blood traitor. And their beloved master falls at the hands of a halfblood. A burst of light, and both of them are gone. There is nothing left for either of them.
As jubilant cries echo throughout the hall, Rodolphus slips out, relatively unnoticed. He squeezes his eyes shut, trying not to imagine her. He can't muster the courage to look at her body, so he flees.
If he's honest, this has been a long time in coming.
And he is not fine with that.
