Chapter 17 Spilling the Beans:
"She still hasn't woken up?"
"No. The doctors said she'll be out for a few minutes but it's been three hours,"
Marcy could hear voices around her. She groaned softly as she shifted.
"Hey, I think she's waking up," a voice to her left said.
Marcy's brow creased before blinking her eyes open. She immediately closed them when a bright light shined in her face. Once her eyes adjusted, Marcy was able to see who was in the room with her. Yunan and Olivia looked at her with concerned eyes. Marcy gave them a smile.
"Hey moms," she mumbled.
Olivia hugged her daughter tightly. Marcy grunted in pain but still hugged her mother back. Olivia pulled back just as Yunan walked towards them.
"How're you feeling kiddo?" she asked.
Marcy rubbed her head which was bandaged up.
"I feel like I was hit by a truck. How long was I out for?" she asked.
"Five hours. That explosion knocked you out cold," Yunan said.
Marcy nodded.
'So that wasn't a dream,' she thought to herself.
Olivia's phone beeped and she grabbed it.
"It's Hopadiah. Grime's awake," she said.
Yunan nodded and stood up. Marcy shot upwards.
"Is Grime okay?" she asked.
Olivia turned to her.
"He's got a few scars and a concussion but aside from that, he's fine," she assured her daughter.
Marcy nodded.
"Your friends just went home but they said they were coming by tomorrow. If that's okay with you?" Yunan asked.
Marcy nodded.
"I don't mind," she said.
Yunan nodded and ruffled Marcy's hair before she and Olivia walked out of the room. Marcy sighed and leaned back against her pillow. Now she knows what Andrias needed the pipe bombs for but there was still something that confused her. How did Andrias know where she was going to be? Marcy winced in pain when her chest throbbed. She placed a hand on her bandaged torso.
'Okay rest first, discuss later,' Marcy thought to herself.
A few days later:
It was around 12 in the afternoon as Marcy changed into a pair of clothes. Unbeknownst to her, her room door had opened. Anne stopped in her tracks when she saw Marcy not wearing a shirt. Marcy turned to the older girl with a confused expression. Anne blushed and looked away.
"Sorry! I should've knocked!" she said.
Marcy blinked before laughing.
"You act like you have never seen me without a shirt on even though we've changed in front of each other in sleepovers when we were little," she said.
'Well, you didn't have any muscles when we were 6,' Anne said in her head.
She shook her head as she walked into the room. Marcy had thrown on a black and green striped collared shirt. She sat down next to Anne who was flipping through some tv channels.
"Man, there's nothing good on Tv today," the brown haired girl muttered.
Marcy shrugged.
"I didn't even watch TV today," she said.
Anne looked at her.
"How do you keep yourself entertained?" she asked.
Marcy looked at her.
"I couldn't move around much because of my stitches," she said.
Anne nodded.
"Right. How long till you get the stitches out?" she asked.
Marcy put up five fingers.
"Five days. The doctor said I have to stay in the hospital until then," she said.
Anne hummed as she changed to the news channel.
"It has been days since the bomb attack on City Hall. Many have been either injured or killed in the explosion. It is unknown if this is a terrorist attack but we do want to know what are the law enforcements doing about this? And where is the Calamity Spider? What is she doing to help this city?"
Marcy grabbed the remote from Anne's hand and quickly turned the TV off.
"Woah!" Anne said, surprised by the quick movement.
She looked at the girl beside her. Marcy had a tight grip on the remote, her jaw was clenched, her shoulders were shaking and her eyes were…Did they just turn green?
"Marcy, are you okay?" Anne asked.
Marcy closed her eyes.
"I'm fine," she said.
Anne frowned.
"No, you're not. Especially not after that outburst," she said.
Marcy shook her head and stood up but before she could walk away, Anne grabbed her wrist. The younger girl clenched her fist.
"Anne, let me go," she said softly.
Anne shook her head.
"No, not until I get some answers. Ever since that school tour you've been acting weird. You keep being late for classes, you disappear and come back like hours later and you make up excuses for what you're doing. I mean I know things are hard for you because of what happened to Mark but even before then, you've been acting weird. Seriously Marcy, what has gotten into you?" she asked.
Marcy shook her head as she pulled her hand out of Anne's grip.
"You don't understand," she said.
Anne clenched her fists.
"You're right, I don't understand! And I can't understand if you don't let me help!" she yelled.
Marcy didn't say anything. Anne huffed and shook her head.
"I'm heading home," Anne mumbled, pushing past Marcy.
She placed her hand on the door knob.
" I'm the Calamity Spider and I couldn't save them," Marcy whispered.
Anne stopped when Marcy spoke. She turned to her crush. Marcy had her hands in her pockets as she looked at the ground.
"What?" she asked.
Marcy clenched her fists inside her pockets before speaking, voice breaking as she did.
"I'm the Calamity spider and I couldn't save them. I was supposed to protect the city but p-people ended up dying because of me and m-maybe if I was quicker,I could've saved all those people who were killed in the explosion," Marcy said, tears running down her face.
She wiped her eyes.
"But, I couldn't help them! I couldn't help Mark or those people because I wasn't fast! T-they died because of me, Mark was killed because of me a-and now there's some mob boss after me and people are paying because I couldn't do anything!" Marcy said.
Anne walked towards Marcy and hugged her tightly. Marcy buried her face into Anne's neck as she cried. The older girl held her close as she comforted the crying girl.
"I'm sorry you have to carry something like that on your shoulders but Marcy, you're not alone in this. You have friends who are here to help you," Anne said.
She placed her hands on Marcy's face and lifted her head so she could look at her.
"But you have to let us help. So that means no more secrets, got it?" she asked.
Marcy wiped her eyes and nodded.
"Got it," she said, smiling a bit.
She pulled Anne into a hug.
"Thanks Anne," she mumbled into her hair.
Anne smiled and hugged her back. Marcy may be going through a rough time but she's going to help her anyway she can.
