Prologue
It all felt so recent to her still, almost as if everything had happened only yesterday, but she knew it'd been far longer than her memories led her to believe. Her eyes, a deep, dazzling shade of azure stared up at the ceiling of her room as she lounged in the peace and quiet the fortress of her room provided. It wasn't often she let her thoughts drift to it, but after a sleep where her dreams were plagued with one moment right after another, she found it hard to ignore the crushing weight those memories left behind. She knew she needed to get up so she could prepare for the day, but she couldn't bring herself to do it.
She blinked and turned her head, looking away from the ceiling and at anything else that might somehow be more fascinating to her in her current state. As she did, she finally let one of her hands move, lifting the pale appendage just a bit. It fell to rest against her ribcage, and she could feel, if only a faint bit, the pulse of the sacred jewel that was within her. When it was returned to her body all those months ago, it'd taken the hideous scar that'd been left behind when it was removed from her. Even though the scar no longer remained, she could still map out the exact shape of it. Each point and jagged arch that made up the starburst shape.
She remembered them all.
She wasn't sure she wanted the jewel back inside her body, but she never had a choice about it. Even after everything, she felt like it would be much safer in another's hands. It was out of reach, yes, but she didn't like knowing it was a part of her any more than she did when she first learned about it. It was a burden she'd sooner go without, but it'd been decided long ago. She could fight it with all she had, but nothing would ever come out of it. It was etched in her fate- that cursed bauble of magic.
With a sigh, Kagome sat up at last, pushing her hands behind her to brace herself on her bed.
"It's been six months," she mused to herself, almost off-handedly. The days had practically flown by as she took to resuming her life in the modern era. It'd been blissful at first, but the days kept flying by quicker and quicker. She was starting to miss the friends she'd made then, but she knew seeing them was something that shouldn't be done. She belonged here, after all, didn't she? It was better for everyone, herself especially, if she let it all -faces and places, every bit of it- remain where it belonged in her past.
She lifted a hand and combed her fingers through hair the color of blue ink, pushing her bangs back out of her face. A second later, a breathed a soft huff. Her hand fell back to her side as she stood up.
She changed from the clothes she slept in and pulled her hair up into a lazy bun before making her way out of her room.
Her day was mostly normal. After making breakfast, she went on her way doing the usual errands she often did to help her mother. It was noon when she got home after doing some shopping. The rest of her family weren't at home- all off doing what they would normally be doing, she realized when she read the note her mother left for her on the fridge.
Kagome put the shopping away, but as she did, she was taken by surprise by an unfamiliar demonic aura appearing behind her. Startled, she spun around, only to come face-to-face with a demon she didn't recognize. Dark green hair with a flash of teal at his bangs, along with deep emerald green eyes was easily mapped out by her. Her confusion remained, even after she realized he had no intention of harming her. She gently placed what she was holding down on the counter as she eyed him.
"Oh, it took no time at all for you to realize I was there," he commented, smiling at her. "That's quite impressive."
"... thanks," Kagome responded, folding her arms over her chest as she arched a brow. "Can't say I know you," she continued. "What brings you to my shrine, demon-san?"
Despite the surprise she must've felt, she was still so polite in posing her statements and question. Definitely far different than others of her kind, and that was to be noted. Most priestesses would be more prudent when handling a demon, surely. She seemed to have no hostility, and she spoke to him as if she was speaking to a friend. A gentle, genial smile was in place on her face, even though her eyes were ones of curiosity.
"Well, you see, I require you to come with me," he said, and he didn't miss the way her eyes widened in surprise before she schooled her expression once more. "You've been chosen to take part in Lord Diavolo's Exchange Program."
"Exchange Program?" Kagome frowned and furrowed her brows. "... Lord Diavolo?" she repeated the name quietly to herself, not recognizing that one at all. She shook her head and pulled a smile back into place. "Ah… I'm sorry demon-san, but I don't think I ever applied for something like that. I must decline. Thanks, but no thanks."
"I'm afraid that won't do," he responded. "Everything has been handled and the paperwork is all done. Your presence is required, Lady Kagome."
Kagome sighed. "I was kinda hoping you might've just got the wrong place…" she mumbled to herself under her breath, but she knew he'd be able to hear her murmured words. "Well, since you know who I am, could you tell me who you are?"
"My name is Barbatos," he said as he bowed a small bit in greeting. "I assure you, I do not have the wrong person," he added, and Kagome could've sworn he was teasing a bit as those words left his mouth. "It is you who I need to summon."
She pouted and shifted her stance some, resting a hand on her hip. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Barbatos," she said after a few seconds of silently pondering how she might've been selected for this thing she'd never heard of in her life. "I'm getting the feeling that you won't leave without me, hm?"
He smiled at her, and that was all the answer she needed. Kagome shook her head with a sigh. Well, at least he didn't seem to wish to harm her. That was a positive.
"Well, if that's the case, then I suppose I'll go along with your wants for now," she said, humming thoughtfully. It didn't seem all that bad, after all. "Is it alright if I leave a note to let my mother know why I'm suddenly gone?"
"Of course," Barbatos said, a smile in place as he answered her. Kagome beamed back at him in response.
"Great! Give me a minute or two to finish putting the shopping up and write the note and I'll be right with you."
Kagome turned the next second without waiting much for a response from the demon. She put the rest of the shopping away in the proper places and grabbed the notepad her mother used. She scribbled down a quick note before placing it on the fridge where she knew her mother would see it.
Once she was done, she set the notepad back down and made her way back to the demon standing in the doorway, waiting for her.
"Okay!" she exclaimed. "Ready to go!"
She didn't know where she was going, but she'd be fine. With hope, she'd get some sort of answer as to why she was chosen for whatever kind of Exchange Program this was.
Auroua-chan: Ending this here for now.
Pairing is undecided. All characters are being considered (except Luke. She's gonna adopt him, no ifs ands or buts about it.) Kagome will be close with Sesshoumaru and have a family bond with him.
Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Reivew&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
