Day 8

Resource check at the beginning of the day. Chest is littered with random junk like spider eyes (they don't rot apparently), a whole lot of rope-like string, bones (better than leaving them just lying around, I suppose – littering is bad) and some other junk not worth mentioning. Not to say it's all that bad – after my last excursion to the cave I probably got enough iron and coal to not worry lacking about those for a long time.

Observed something interesting too earlier, it'd just slipped my mind to write it down – I can "stack" same items several times within themselves in both my "inventory" and my hand; if it's inventory, there's a number next to that item telling me how many units there are, and if it's my hand, I get a sort of distinctive feel for the amount. Surprisingly enough, it doesn't get any heavier – them items just kind of…occupy the same space and that's it. Also took note that this "stacking" goes up to 64 units – after that, any items I try to place in that same "stack" in the "inventory" sort of bounce away, like magnets (I get the same feeling-feedback-whatever at least).

All of this means that I can potentially carry more than a heavy-duty freighter. I was pretty elated after realizing this, not gonna lie.

On a not-so bright side note, I am STILL pretty low on food. Just because I didn't need to eat much in that cave doesn't mean I had much food to begin with. I am not in a butchering mood today (or ever, really), so I guess I'll check on those farming plots I set up.

P.S: Something I'd forgotten to mention in my observation notes – things that are in their "smaller" (or "broken") state kind of just stick to me if I'm walking close enough – either straight into my hands, my belt or into my inventory. I don't see a way around this, and it's pretty annoying.

P.P.S: I think I'll call a 64 unit "stack" simply "stack" from now on. Short, sweet, rolls off the tongue – and onto my paper.

Inspected my wheat "farm". A few crops had grown up enough, cut those down – 3 in total, and planted the seeds back. Brought them to the crafting table to look at the instructions. Pretty simple – grind the wheat into grains. That was it, surprisingly. I think you have to bake the dough (from grains) to get bread normally, but this wasn't the problem. The problem was that I'd ended up with only a single loaf of bread.

A single loaf of bread from made from several crops grown over several days! It didn't even taste that good. I think I'll be better off going fishing.

On the flip side, I don't think I'll take any piece of bread I see for granted, ever again.

There's BARELY any fish in the river now. I'd been sitting by the edge for a solid part of the day now, and all I've managed to fish out were a pair of cods and some lousy leather boots full of holes. Arc Luck is really in full effect. I wish I could use the famed Arc Charm instead.

P.S: Scratch that, no no no. That'd make it so much worse I'd probably be struck by a lightning on a sunny day.

Quit trying to fish after a while – the fishing rod today must've been cursed. Or maybe it's a cursed day in general – dived into the river as a last resort only to find nothing whatsoever.

Animal meat was about my only option at this point.

Found some cows on the far end of the plain's plateau (Can I even call it that? I guess I can. It sounds cool and there are no angry high school teachers threatening to send me into detention).

Killed a few (the rest just walking nearby, none the wiser) then "System" brought up another guide on the "best and most nutritious beef cuts". A few minutes (or seconds – time is weird here) and I was treated to several super-smelling beef steaks.

(All of them seemed well-done, but that's cause I stuck them in the smoker. Even so, I doubt they would've ended up any different If I were to cook it on a campfire - sisters seemed adamant on keeping all of the finer meat cooking details to themselves. Why, I'll never know. Maybe because I beat them in the Arc Family Dancing Championship that one time? That was totally their fault – shouldn't have tortured me so much with the "mandatory" lesson attendance. Ha.)

In any case, took a bite out of one to gauge how much I'd possibly screwed it up. I didn't. It was a bit too chewy, and lack of any spices was not very welcome by my long-accustomed stomach (though the smoking gave it a surprisingly nice aftertaste), but as soon as I finished it…

The only time I felt more invigorated was when Pyrrha unlocked my aura.

And then I understood what I'd been missing out on. Animal meats ARE very high in nutritious value; and I'd been straight up ignoring them. I might have to reconsider my initial stance on animal butchering.

Just get over it, Jaune.

P.S: Might have to reconsider my decision to stay in these plains too – if the animals are eventually killed off, I'll have no other option to rely on fishing. Today had shown me how much of a game of chance it is. At least if I'm moving I'll always have a fresh source of food somewhere around.

Gone back to the cave. Torches never seem to go out – that's good, keeps the creepies away. There'd been an unlit ravine just beside the mineshaft entrance, lit that up too, for good measure. Found a new type of mineral – "Lapis Lazuli". If I remember correctly, it's either a kind of gemstone or something similar to that – I'm keeping it either way.

Can't see anything else worthwhile in here. Back to the mineshaft, I guess.

Writing this right now while waiting for spider poison to leave my system. AGAIN. Little turd quite literally fell through a tiny hole in the wall from all the gravel I'd been digging through in an unexplored part. Thankfully, managed to plug it before any more could join. Even now I can hear them crawling around above en masse – nonstop hissing and slithering around. I hate them so much.

Atleast the poison isn't as bad this time around – everything still hurts, but at least I'm not delirious.

I think I hit the jackpot.

That was a huge number of diamonds I've managed to uncover back there – several veins clumped together, in fact.

Still haven't found any use for them, but even so, I'm not going to just ignore them. They're just so perfectly shaped and clear, you would not even begin to think they've been mined not a minute ago.

I bet with all that gold and a few of these little fortunes I could have somebody make a killer necklace for Weiss, so that she might finally pay some attention to me.

Or maybe not? I don't want her to think I'm bribing her?

Why couldn't it be as simple as just having confidence?

Better yet, why am I thinking about this now, of all times? I need to focus I'm going off on tangents again. Ugh.

P.S: Hearing some weird "slapping" (closest comparison) noises coming from deeper within the cave. I'm elated enough to almost not feel scared.

P.P.S: There's water flowing out and it's making it really hard to move forward. That's good – I've lost my exploring confidence about five steps in. Blocking it off with some fences.

Found a chest. Nothing of real value within, except for one – a Golden Apple. That's what the tag says, at least – it doesn't weigh that much, so I don't think it's made of solid gold; maybe gold-plated at most.

Typical fake advertising.

All I know is that it's probably rare (the nametag is different in color – first one I've come across so far), so I'm keeping it.

P.S: Oh, took an extra bucket from it too.

Cleared a lava spillage in the most unorthodox way possible.

How, one may ask?

Well, buckets appear to be really freaking powerful.

Yep, I have a bucket filled with bone-scorching hot lava right now, and the best thing?

It's not hot. Well, right now it is – spilled some over by one exit out of this hallway (with a generous wall of cobble between us) – not only it should (ideally) keep the monsters away, it's also a nice light source (and warmth source too, not that I need it now).

This was all a complete accident too: I'd planned to stop the spillage but cutting off the source (assumed that flowing lava followed the same "rules" as flowing water), reached for the miniature cube of cobblestone on my belt – grabbed a bucket by accident. Only realized my "mistake" by the time my hand was so close to the fiery flow I should have, realistically, felt intense heat.

There wasn't any. My body barely felt any heat, though I was sweating HARD. Put the bucket back onto the belt and almost fell on my ass from how scorching hot it became.

You know you're getting messed up when your first question afterwards is:

"Can I stick it in a bucket?"

As it turned out, I can. From what I understand, this heat resistance is specifically so that I'd be able to get right close enough to the lava source and use the Bucket without flailing away from the unbearable heat – all of which I did. Yep, Jaune Arc – the genius who dumped hot lava in an iron bucket.

I needn't have worried. Lava-in-a-bucket seems to follow the same rules and principles as water-in-a-bucket: it doesn't spill out, it doesn't move, it doesn't heat up the bucket to the point that I get an awful scalding burn, it doesn't even exist properly. Really – I touched it; little more than a cold, glowing rock-like mass. It's effectively nothing until, like water, I will it out – and then there's a huge, intimidating, slow-moving pile of DEATH on the floor. It was pretty stupid of me to just dump it in the middle of the hallway and not expect it to spread around.

Thankfully, found a solution – apparently I can use the bucket to will lava out and into the bucket from a distance away – about a meter, I'd say? If I will it out, the lava just pops up instantly on the spot I'd been looking at, and disappears as just as rapidly if I will it back.

I can already see the potential this thing might have as a weapon.

(I can safely say that a water bucket is probably going to behave the same way and holyshit the wooden supports are now on fire id forgotten about the lava fuck!)

P.S: It does behave the same way, indeed.

P.P.S: Something to note for myself – the "heat resistance" disappeared once I'd figured out how to manipulate the lava from a distance. Pretty suspicious, to be honest.

More diamonds! I don't know if they're supposed to be so common (as I understand it's pretty deep here underground). Either way I'm pretty excited right now. Going to light up this branch of the mine and get diggi/
